Today it's my pleasure to introduce you to my writing friend Patricia Johns. She has written more than 20 novels, so it is well past time to have her on Book Talk. Her best-selling Amish novels have been delighting readers, but I can't wait for y'all to dive into Green Pastures. It's a twist on the genre because the heroine is returning after leaving to get married and attend vet school, only now she's divorced and has to find a way to be true to who she is while also returning to her Amish family and roots. I would call Green Pastures a blend of romance and women's fiction and one that pulls you into a story of family and sisters.I really enjoyed talking with Patricia about her writing journey and her encouragement that we should never give up. As she says, we haven't lost until we quit. We never know how close we are to a breakthrough. There's a readership for the book as long as we try. This was such a fun conversation. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did!Connect with Patricia JohnsFacebook | Instagram | X

In this episode, Major writes… “Long ago, I knew I needed a new conception of heaven. The one with pearly white gates and winged angels from my youth in church just wasn't working for me. I mean, I get clouds and blue skies as symbols of ascension from earthly plains. And it wasn't just in church — heaven was everywhere, in museums and in movies, too. But those early images, lodged into my subconscious, weren't inclusive or realistic, except for the 1936 Hollywood classic Green Pastures.”Celebrate the power of poems with a gift to The Slowdown today. A pastor is a shepherd, and as a shepherd, a pastor guides his sheep to green pastures. What does that look like in your workplace? Often, we have conversations with those we work with and they are not hanging out in Green pastures. They're hanging out in mud pits or sewer pits or drainage ditches. Many of them don't know anything different. They grew up in a drainage ditch, a mud puddle, or a sewer pit. That's what their life has always looked like. We serve a living savior who wants each one of us to live life to its fullest; as a pastor in your workplace, lead people to the green pastures, where they can eat spiritual food that will replenish, restore, and renew them. Just because someone grew up in a pretty broken place, doesn't mean our Father can't renew them. Embrace your role as Pastor and lead people to green pastures at work.

Thank you. Today Howard Elseth stretches out the further instruction and study of the Urim and Thummim. Very little is give to us to know what they are for. All we know is there were two stones of black and white that were used for decision making by the high priest. However, the understanding of what they mean will open your eyes to the spiritual and the physical meanings of the scriptures. He articulates how the Urim represents doctrine, the spiritual and fire. While the Thummim represents the physical and carnal world. Howard discusses who Satan was in heaven, who was Lucifer "the anointed cherub whose wings covereth." How Adam and Eve lost their covering by falling into sin because Satan lost his covering of God in heaven, and now has become the "Un-covering" devil. The contrast of the Blood of Jesus Christ's covering of our sins, compared to Satan's work of uncovering and nakedness. This is such a profound study and most excellent. You will rejoice like never before with utmost gratitude for being gloriously covered by Jesus Christ for all eternity. Thank you. In part 5 of the 16ll KJB studies into the validity and Paul the Apostle, Howard Elseth continues to dig deeper. He opens up with Hebrews 4:11: "Let us labour therefore to enter into that rest, lest any man fall after the same example of unbelief." There is a lot of misunderstanding about what this really means. It is not a works oriented, earned rest as it may sound. This involves the very little discussed "Urim and Thummim." The widely held belief is that it is like a couple of black and white dice thrown to see outcomes. But this could not be further from the truth. The Thummim represents the material world. The Urim represents "doctrine and truth" and the spiritual world. Main stream Christianity reads out of Alexandrian/Eyptian texts that never take them any further out of a material experience. They never enter into the Urim of the Sabbath rest. It is going from the Thummim of the material world into the realm of the Urim of the spiritual that brings brilliant new life. It is the difference between night and day. It is like going from dwelling on a little hill to sojourning in the heights of the majestic mountain of God. Listen as Howard, a master theologian teaches the depth of this subject from the great 1611 King James Bible. "Reading Christians are growing Christians. When Christians cease to read, they cease to grow." ~ John Wesley --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/joanie-stahl/support

Thank you. There has been a long running cult-like belief that Paul the Apostle was a fraud, a liar and dangerous. Some people believe that if anyone reads the 13 books he wrote they are going to hell and multitudes are falling for it. In the ongoing discussion about "the Validity of Paul The Apostle" in the final message of part 4 today, Howard continues to establish the beauty of Paul's words that are forever written in the infalible 1611 King James Bible. How Paul was undoubtedly called by Jesus Christ to preach the pure gospel entrusted to him. He completely and selflessly admonishes all to run their race full, vivid and strong to "win the incorruptible crown." The lesson stretches out to Moses and His powerful work given by God to Him. Both men endured severe hardships but were potent in their callings and finished gloriously. There is so much wealth in the way Howard uncovers and stretches forth the line in understanding the original old English language. Revealing deeper meanings in the letterings, spellings and the numbers of the words that substantially prove there is none other Bible than the 1611 King James Bible. Listen how Howard masterfully goes into the depths beyond my ability to describe here. This message is so deeply rich and beautiful. "In heaven we shall appear, not in armour, but in robes of glory. But here these are to be worn night and day; we must walk, work, and sleep in them, or else we are not true soldiers of Christ." ~William Gurnall --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/joanie-stahl/support

Eliot's line from 'East Coker', "Old men ought to be explorers", never gets... old. It is inspiring, counter-intuitive, awesome, and, yes, within our reach. And everyone's -- not just that of "old men". But I never understood it -- really -- until I met Los Straitjackets: their music, I mean. How did Los Straitjackets "shine a light" (CCR) on Thomas Stearns Eliot? Well, they did so because it doesn't take many listens to realize that Los Straitjackets are often at their best in the last 40 seconds of each track. At first you hear a fairly predictable riff on a familiar song, but then, in the last verse -- sometimes in the last 28 seconds -- they explode, and the song goes through the roof. Listen to "Christmas Weekend", which begins this cast; or "Linus & Lucy", or "Fury", or "Tempest" (which ends the cast), or "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah", or "Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer (!), or... About 70% percent of their songs catch fire at the very end. Now, if I want to be a T. S. Eliot kind of a man -- and play my life like Los Straitjackets play their songs -- what do I do? What makes this happen in one life, such as yours or mine? The answer to the question comes in -- are you ready? -- the last third of this podcast. The images are (1) putting your life on the right foot (i.e., death/resurrection) rather than on the wrong foot (i.e., action/consequence); and (2) assimilating the negativities of your "Voyage of Life" (Thomas Cole, 1842), which can only really happen if you are in the presence of the Compassionate Christ (Bertel Thorwaldsen/Church of the Advent, Birmingham, 1966). Without God's Mercy (as in "The Green Pastures", 1930) it can't happen. Within God's Mercy, it can happen. In the blink of an eye. I never met T.S. Eliot. Would sure love to have. But I did meet Los Straitjackets! Really did. They all autographed my copy of their single, "The Sox Are Rockin'". One's still speechless. Wouldn't you be?

In the ongoing discussion about "the Validity of Paul The Apostle" in part 3 today Howard brings to light why the body of Christ is so easily led astray. He examines the reason why by the illustration of how the Israelites left Egypt and spent forty years for God to get Egypt out of them. In like manner has the body of Christ left off reading the 1611 KJB for many generations in lieu of Alexandrian Text Bibles created by men. Which have only wreaked evil and havoc causing great meaningless heresies. Listen how Howard masterfully he goes into the depths beyond my ability to describe here. In the ongoing discussion about "the Validity of the Paul The Apostle" in part 2 today, Howard sets the steadfast mark of Paul's commission from Jesus Christ Himself. The detailed, vital keypoints of His calling are brought to crystal clear light in the first half. Then in the last half he answers with clarity, the age old question of what is the "accursed thing" and/or the "unclean thing" that Paul strongly warns not to touch. It is fascinating as He opens up doors of solid theological, iron clad truths and so much more. Keep in mind he is teaching out of the 1611 King James Bible that is written in the purest orginial English language in gothic. So the spellings will be different most likely from your 1769 King James Bible Version. This is a most excellent, compelling study. Thank you. The subject of suffering is not always something easy to talk about. It is inevitable that everyone will find themselves in one way or another in darkness and the "shadow of death." Job even said, "What I feared has come upon me; what I dreaded has happened to me." Job 3:25. Today Howard discusses through the 1611 King James Bible what it really means to suffer as a Believer. No one wants to suffer, yet throughout the whole Bible those who have loved, faithfully served and walked closely with God suffered the most. Yet these are the ones who entered into the secret place of a shadowless communion of suffering. Then later entered into glories of heaven. This is a lengthier video than normal because there was so much living waters flowing out. Feel free to pause it from time to time, take in what he is teaching you. Drink it in, take notes. Meditate on it in quiet places. "We say, then, to anyone who is under trial, give Him time to steep the soul in His eternal truth. Go into the open air, look up into the depths of the sky, or out upon the wideness of the sea, or on the strength of the hills that is His also; or, if bound in the body, go forth in the spirit; spirit is not bound. Give Him time and, as surely as dawn follows night, there will break upon the heart a sense of certainty that cannot be shaken." ~ Amy Carmichael --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/joanie-stahl/support

From Ronnie's latest talk on the 23rd Psalm: "He 'maketh me to lie down.' The Shepherd gently - but deliberately - compels me to be still. It is the lying down; it is the quiet; it is the stillness that leads to restoration. The best translation from the Hebrew is: 'Bed down in the lush green grasses. Sip the cold, quiet, deep waters -of rest.' Cold drinks and nap time sounds like heaven! But most of us have to be forced into stillness. We must be made to lie down. We can't turn off the monkey-mind. We can't even turn off the television or put down our phones. We feed ourselves on the breaking news of the moment; we gorge on incessant information and activity; we are surrounded by the loud, the unnecessary, the fearful, and the obnoxious. Our senses are continually assaulted by those things, situations, and people that can do nothing but leave us angry, thirsty, hungry, and unsettled. Lord knows, oh the Lord knows, we must be made to lie down."

Today's poem is Voice Clear As by Kemi Alabi. The Slowdown is your daily poetry ritual.
