Today, we are lucky to have Ben Orlando on the podcast! Ben Orlando is a Therapist, a Podcaster, an Educator, a Writer, and an incredible human being. He received his MFA in Creative Writing from Eastern Washington University and his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pittsburgh. Using podcasts as the medium to express his creativity, Ben Orlando started a podcast called “History Repeating Itself.” In it, he and his co-host, Michelle, uncover the connections between the past and the present, making predictions based on historical patterns and cultural trends. However, he rediscovered his buried passion for baseball when he started reading fiction novels about it over the summer. Ben traveled back to the good old days of collecting baseball cards and hanging baseball posters on the walls. This led him to create another podcast called “Midnight Library of Baseball.” As a sport-thusiast, I have been binge-listening and enjoying the calm, chill vibe of his show. Whether you play baseball, are an avid fan, or have a curious itch about this sport, this is the perfect podcast for you! In this The Ripple Effect Podcast episode, Ben and I took the plunge into the world of baseball by discussing “Field of Dreams,” a 1989 movie based on the novel Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella. The story follows Ray, an Iowa farmer who builds a baseball diamond in his cornfield after hearing a voice say, “If you build it, he will come.” This leads to the emergence of legendary baseball players' ghosts to play the game. As Ben and I went deep into the “Field of Dreams” rabbit hole, we conversed about family, relationships, and the importance of connecting with your own feelings. This is something you shouldn't miss! This Earth Day, I'd like to honor the importance of our connection to the natural world by welcoming the insightful Derrick Jensen, an author and environmental activist whose work has profoundly influenced me from an early age. We explore the stark contrast between our knowledge of commercial jingles and movie stars versus our understanding of the stars in the sky and the edible plants in our own backyards. How has our relationship with nature changed so drastically over the centuries? And what does this mean for our souls and our future?Derrick paints a vivid picture of a world teeming with life, a stark contrast to the ecological devastation we witness today. Can we truly comprehend the rapid pace of loss that's occurring right before our eyes? We discuss the concept of addiction, not just in terms of substances, but in how we've become enslaved to technology and convenience. What are the implications of this enslavement for our planet and our very humanity?Join us as we grapple with these questions and consider the idea of communal decision-making. Could it be the key to balancing innovation with tradition, action with contemplation? And what might we learn from the Okanagan decision-making process that honors the perspectives of youth, elders, mothers, and fathers? Tune in to find out how we might navigate the complex relationship between our technological advancements and the natural world we seem to be drifting away from.Hailed as the philosopher poet of the environmental movement, Derrick Jensen is author of twenty-five books, including The Myth of Human Supremacy, Endgame and A Language Older Than Words. He holds a degree in creative writing from Eastern Washington University, a degree in mineral engineering physics from the Colorado School of Mines, and has taught at Eastern Washington University and Pelican Bay State Prison. He has packed university auditoriums, conferences, and bookstores across the nation, stirring them with revolutionary spirit.Books mentioned in this episode:A Language Older Than Words by Derrick JensenAll books mentioned on this podcast can be found at sometherapist.com/bookshop or by following the Amazon affiliate links provided here. QUOTABLE“Life is about connections … For me what has made the work that I've done or my life interesting is the connections I've made with people. It makes my world expand.” (Christina) “There's something beautiful about (not) turning your back on the past but looking for the positive benefits in it and keeping it as part of your life story.” (Chris) “Everything I have lived through is an opportunity. There are things that I've screwed up or am not proud of, but I don't dwell on them. I look at what I can take away from that moment and do better.” (Christina) “If you work hard enough, there aren't a lot of boundaries you can't overcome. IF you're committed and drive towards that!” (Christina) “Life is not about avoiding bad things happening to you. Life is about avoiding a negative mental attitude when those things occur.” (Chris) “Scaling with soul is about how you keep the essence of your value set and what you're trying to be … You can still be a really great place!” (Christina) “You can observe or you can engage. And those are two really different things.” (Christina) “There's good in everybody. You just have to be open to finding it and open-hearted to know that just because someone is different from you doesn't make them better or worse. We're all just humans.” (Christina) “Hard times don't have to create loneliness. Hard times can create meaningful moments of connection.” (Chris) “All the best things in my life have happened when I've said ‘yes,' versus ‘no.' ” (Christina) LINKS/FURTHER RESOURCES:Click here to learn more about “Taking Care of Business? In January, 1958, a renowned sailing family was lost in a storm in the Bermuda Triangle. The youngest of two daughters, Sarah, suddenly an orphan, grew up never knowing her parents and grandparents. As an adult, she began to pursue the mystery of her family and their disappearance, and discovered that their stories were far different from the versions she was told. Sarah Conover's memoir follows the national media's investigation of the Revonoc's vanishing, and exposes the truths that led her to “unstory” the family history, creating a new understanding of their lives, and hers. About Sarah Conover: Sarah Conover holds a BA in comparative religions from the University of Colorado, and an MFA in creative writing from Eastern Washington University. She has worked as a television producer for PBS and Internews (an international media NGO), a social worker for Catholic Charities, a public school teacher, and taught creative writing through the community colleges of Spokane, Washington. She is the author of six books on world wisdom traditions and spirituality published by Skinner House Books, the educational publishing arm of the Unitarian Universalist Association. Her poetry, essays and interviews have been published in a variety of literary magazines and anthologies. sarahconover.com https://55fathoms.com/set-adrift/

Morgan Larche graduated from Eastern Washington University with a BA in Therapeutic Recreation. She has worked in a variety of Parks and Recreation programs that provided inclusive and Special Olympics programs to people with intellectual and physical disabilities. The Art of Charm is brought to you by BetterHelp. Visit betterhelp.com/charm today to get 10% off your first month. In today's episode, we cover anger and compassion with Russell Kolts, PhD. Russell is Professor of Psychology at Eastern Washington University, an internationally recognized trainer in compassion-focused therapy (CFT), a TedX speaker, and the author of several books on compassion-focused therapy including CFT Made Simple: A Clinician's Guide to Practicing Compassion-Focused Therapy and Buddhist Psychology and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy: A Clinician's Guide. Many men struggle with anger, especially today because society condemns the emotion, so what does it mean to express anger in healthy ways vs unhealthy ways, what can you do to manage your anger effectively, and how can you use self-compassion to ensure your anger doesn't destroy your relationships? What to Listen For Introduction – 0:00 What are the biggest misconceptions around compassion and why is compassion important to your ability to dominate life with finesse and courage? Is it bad to use anger as fuel for action and growth? How to Manage Anger – 12:40 What exercise can you implement today to make sure you don't blow up at someone you care about the next time they make you angry? The worst way to resolve conflict – 22:46 How do you handle conflict and arguments when your anger feels overwhelming? How do you manage shame effectively? Why is a problem solving approach problematic in relationship conflicts? Tools for Building Self Compassion – 41:20 What 2 questions can you ask yourself to develop self compassion so you can be as patient and understanding with yourself as you are with the people you care about? Self compassion doesn't come naturally, especially for men, but it's crucial for not allowing anger to control us. Also, it's important to recognize the difference between using anger for positive things like motivation for taking action or problem solving versus letting anger consume us. It takes awareness, intention, and practice to be able to show the same compassion to yourself as you do the people you care about. When done effectively, showing compassion can transform any kind of hostile situation into something more meaningful, both in relationships you're part of and in life in general.
