Today on the 5: For week 3 of "Kai-June", Lando and I watched the 1982 film Q The Winged Serpent. Much like 2016's Colossal, this movie is attempting to have at least 3 different genres happening at once, and it's just barely the monster movie the film artwork would have you believe. Unlike 2016's Colossal, this movie is very good.

In this episode, Chris and Matt explore four stories that show what happens when AI, automation, and gadgets step off our screens and into the physical world. First, we look at a live demo where security researchers hijacked a commercially available humanoid robot using nothing but spoken commands, then used short‑range wireless to spread the exploit to an offline robot—turning embodied AI into a potential physical weapon.   Next, we head to Japan, where Ishinomaki City is deploying Terra Drone–built “bear‑repellent spray drones” to deal with record numbers of human‑bear encounters, injuries, and deaths, using capsaicin spray as a non‑lethal deterrent from up to a kilometer away.   Back at the dinner table, pasta sauce brand Prego and nonprofit StoryCorps have created the “Connection Keeper,” a $20, puck‑shaped, screen‑free recorder meant to get phones off the table and preserve family conversations, with an option to archive them via StoryCorps and even the Library of Congress.   Finally, we discuss de‑extinction company Colossal's claim that it has hatched 26 live chicks from artificial eggshells—3D‑printed honeycomb containers with silicone membranes—positioning the technology as a step toward bringing back extinct birds like the dodo and giant moa.   Together, these stories raise big questions about safety, surveillance, conservation, and what counts as “humane” technology in a world where bits are increasingly attached to atoms. Links discussed: “Researchers Show Some Robots Can Be Hijacked Just Through Spoken Commands” (Slashdot / Interesting Engineering, DARKNAVY demo) “Japanese city deploys anti-bear drones as ‘human casualties at an all-time high'” (Terra Drone coverage and news reports) “Has the smartphone hijacked your dinner table? StoryCorps and Prego made this gadget to rescue your dinner convos” (TechRadar and Prego materials) “Chickens without eggs? De-extinction company creates artificial egg.” (Ars Technica, Colossal Biosciences) See you on the Digital Flip-side!

Céline Dion : Le pari colossal qui a réinventé le désert de Las Vegas

La Story Nostalgie

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 5, 2026 3:41

Send Kevin a Text MessageJeff Annison and Paul Scanlan, Emmy-winning co-founders of the world's first fan-owned entertainment company, Legion M, join host Kevin Goetz for a conversation about disrupting industries, building communities, and betting on the audience. Annison and Scanlan pioneered mobile television at MobiTV and launched the very first equity crowdfunding campaign in U.S. history. The duo have spent two decades proving that the audience is the most powerful force in entertainment.Chicago, Boston, and a Love of Film (01:48): Paul Scanlan traces his passion for filmmaking to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and to a family trip to Cape Cod where seeing Jaws at age five both terrified and captivated him. Jeff Annison arrived at storytelling through an unlikely path: a mechanical engineering degree at UCLA and a series of screenwriting classes taken on a lark.MobiTV: Putting Television on a Flip Phone (07:18): The two founders recount how a mutual friend with a micro-display technology brought them together in 1999 to build what would become MobiTV, the first company to stream live television to mobile phones.Colossal (25:49): Legion M's first major move was a small P&A investment alongside the distributor Neon on the Anne Hathaway film Colossal. With just 3,500 investors and a million dollars, they organized screenings and community meetups.Community as Marketing Engine (29:54): Annison and Scanlan explain how Legion M's 60,000-plus investors are an organic grassroots marketing force. As Scanlan puts it, communicating with their community costs nothing but can drive millions in box office.Saving Coyote vs. Acme (35:25): One of the most discussed projects in recent Hollywood history found new life through Catchup Entertainment. Legion M is partnering on its release, and the trailer has already surpassed 50 million views.Advice for the New Filmmaker (43:22): Annison urges emerging creators to start with the end in mind, thinking not just about the key scene but about how to communicate a story in a brief window of attention. Scanlan adds a hard truth: the industry is more entrepreneurial than most people expect, and selling to a major studio is rarely the path.On Being on the Side of the Audience (56:44): Annison reflects on what keeps him grounded amid industry uncertainty and the rise of AI: the belief that no matter what technology produces, only human beings pay to watch movies. Building a company on the side of the audience, he argues, is the most defensible position in entertainment.Host: Kevin GoetzGuest: Jeff Annison and Paul ScanlanProducer: Kari CampanoWriters: Kevin Goetz, Darlene Hayman, and Kari CampanoAudio Engineer: Gary Forbes (DG Entertainment)For more information about Legion M:Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legion_MWebsite: https://legionm.com/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/legionmofficial/For more information about Kevin Goetz:- Website: www.KevinGoetz360.com- Audienceology Book: https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Audience-ology/Kevin-Goetz/9781982186678- How to Score in Hollywood: https://www.amazon.com/How-Score-Hollywood-Secrets-Business/dp/198218986X/- Facebook, X, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Substack: @KevinGoetz360- LinkedIn @Kevin Goetz- Screen Engine/ASI Website: www.ScreenEngineASI.com

In this 3rd recording of Off the Record in 2026, Rastislav, Stewart and Ken bring some new films into the picture. In our feature Rastislav compares two films about evil. I Saw the Devil from 2010, and Blue Velvet from 1986 represent stark opposites in how evil can be portrayed. I Saw the Devil being a Korean film directed by Kim Jee-woon and Blue Velvet by David Lynch. Both are well liked and are highly praised. One is more of a dark and psychological evil, while the other is a chaotic type. Stars include Kyle MacLachlan and Isabella Rossellini. The Korean film has Lee Byung-hun and Choi Min-sik as their main characters. Rasto gives us his impression of both films.Stewart's Greater pick Dangerous animals from 2025 directed by Sean Byrne — starring Hassie Harrison and Jai Courtney. The Dangerous animal in question are blood thirsty sharks off the gold coast, but the antagonist has a dark secret to be revealed to his would be captors. The film takes us slightly into the psyche of a serial killer, but remains true to the genre of a survivalist film.Ken gives us a run-down of his man vs machine pick, Unstoppable from 2010. Directed by Tony Scott and featuring Denzel Washington with Chris Pine. The film is about a run-away train carrying dangerous chemicals and the efforts made to get the train under control. Based on real life events while still filled with action and suspense. This was Tony Scott's last film unfortunately before he passed on. Ken gave it a fair assessment. The Lesser pick by Stewart had an interesting premise, but fell way short in the delivery department. American Sweatshop from 2025 directed by Uta Briesewitz and starring Lili Reinhart attempts to give us an inside look into the lives of social media content moderators. The film is set in modern day Florida and the main character becomes obsessed with one of the recordings she saw while moderating. She hopes to get justice for the possible victim in the video. And finally Ken recounted his experience with the 2016 sci-fi pick Colossal directed by Nacho Vigalondo and Anne Hathaway as the lead actor. Unfortunately there was a bit of a bait and switch as the film had a darker edge than Ken expected, rather than the whimsical sci-fi comedy he was expecting. And one final note from Stewart is the disappointing 2026 series finale of Good Omens that left a bad taste for Stewart and seemingly the fans. This is a public episode. What is de-extinction? The process of de-extinction is all about bringing extinct species back to life. It became known in the 2010s, thanks to an ambitious plan from American geneticist George Church, who dreamed of resurrecting the woolly mammoth, an animal which has been extinct for 3700 years. Fast forward to the 2020s and Church's bioscience startup Colossal is now eding closer towards making that a reality. As of March 2022, Colossal announced that it had raised a total of $75M for the project. Is it really possible to revive extinct animal species? In evolutionary terms, the last Ice Age was just yesterday. We narrowly missed witnessing creatures like woolly mammoths, short-faced bears, glyptodons, and dire wolves. The late Pleistocene, spanning roughly 50,000 to 12,000 years ago, is marked by the extinction of most large terrestrial animals outside of Africa, likely driven by a combination of climate change and the expansion of modern humans. In this conversation, I speak with paleontologist and Associate Professor of Anatomy at Des Moines University, Julie Meachen. She leads ongoing research at Natural Trap Cave, where she and her team excavate Ice Age mammals each summer. Their work aims to understand how climate change influenced both the morphology and genetics of these animals. By analyzing microfaunal remains and pollen records, they also reconstruct Pleistocene climate conditions in mid-latitude North America. Recently, colossal bioscience announced what it described as the “de-extinction” of the dire wolf. While that claim did not fully hold up, the underlying science is still remarkable. In our discussion, Julie explains what we know about the late Pleistocene ecosystem at the time of the dire wolf's extinction, and what fossil evidence reveals about these animals. We also examine Colossal's announcement, considering whether it was aimed less at the scientific community and more at the public and potential investors. Viewed in that light, the real value of reviving charismatic species like the woolly mammoth or dire wolf may not lie in the animals themselves. Instead, their greatest contribution could be as ambassadors, capturing public imagination and helping drive the development of technologies for genetic rescue and conservation. ►Watch on YouTube: https://youtu.be/c4lvsreJ-WU ►You can find out more about Julie's work here: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=-hdi3IUAAAAJ&hl=en https://www.dmu.edu/directory/profile/julie-meachen/

In part two of this two part episode, Jack continues their look into the dubious practice of “de-extinction” this time as it is pushed in the 21st century by Colossal BioSciences. Created in 2019 by Ben Lamm and George Church, Colossal aims at making extinction, as well as the endangered species list, a thing of the past using CRISPR technology. Claiming to have revived the Dire Wolf and Red Wolf, the company actually has been more successful in massive PR campaigns and paying off critics than reversing species death. But who benefits when people believe that the ecosystem can be preserved through test tubes rather than policy aimed at protecting endangered animals? You guessed it: wealthy sociopaths who see traditional conservation efforts as a barrier to total planetary domination. Fully & Completely: Redux Man Machine PoemThe last record. "Man Machine Poem" arrived in June 2016 wrapped in the worst news imaginable - and somehow it was still everything. Episode Summary: jD and Greg LeGros sit under a pear tree - bees and all - for the final entry in Fully & Completely's full Tragically Hip discography run. The album in question is "Man Machine Poem", the Hip's fourteenth and last studio record, released June 17th, 2016. Produced by Kevin Drew and Dave Hamelin, it arrived weeks after the band announced Gord Downie's glioblastoma diagnosis - though almost everything on it was written before that news broke. What jD and Greg dig into here is not just a final album. It's a listen to a band that sounds revitalized. That sounds, somehow, free. Track by track they work through all ten songs - 'Man', 'In a World Possessed by the Human Mind', 'What Blue', 'In Sarnia', 'Here, in the Dark', 'Great Soul', 'Tired as Fuck', 'Hot Mic', 'Ocean Next', and 'Machine' - unpacking the lyrical weight, the production choices, the thematic through lines, and the heartbreak of knowing this was the last one. There's also conversation about the musical landscape of 2016 - "Blackstar", "Blonde", "A Moon Shaped Pool", "We Got It from Here" - and the news, announced in the episode, that a new Gord Downie solo double album was coming. A heavy, funny, essential listen. “This is the most complete and well-written and natural sounding that they've sounded since ‘Phantom Power'. You could not ask for more.” - Greg LeGros What They Covered Track 1 - 'Man' • Psychedelic opener. Gord's vocal sounds ageless. jD hears the melody of 'Machine' hiding in the first 30 seconds - a bookend hiding in plain sight. Track 2 - 'In a World Possessed by the Human Mind' • Written about Laura Downie's illness. Greg reads it three ways simultaneously - personal, political, about the post-truth media cycle. 'Exciting over fair.' It lands every time. Track 3 - 'What Blue' • Greg cracks the code mid-episode: those eyes in the grey of everything falling apart. A marriage ending, quietly, inside a great song. Track 4 - 'In Sarnia' Fully & Completely: Redux Man Machine Poem tthpods.com 2 • Originally titled 'Insomnia'. Greg's go-to on the album. jD calls the guitar intro and vocal entry 'spectacular.' A love song to sleeplessness, or to a city, or to both. Track 5 - 'Here, in the Dark' • Seasonal affective disorder as a rock song. The last lyric - 'Me, I'm as happy as my least-happy kid' - hits like a gut punch. Both of them feel it. Track 6 - 'Great Soul' • Jammy and psychedelic and soaring. Greg reads the lyric run - 'I want to enchant you, I want you to enchant my days' - like a poem, and it sounds stunning that way. Track 7 - 'Tired as Fuck' • The campfire song that isn't. Tragic and hopeful at the same time. Greg's favourite line on the whole record: 'Tired as fuck, I want to stop so much, I almost don't want to stop.' Track 8 - 'Hot Mic' • Big, ballsy, stompy. Possible commentary on celebrity, patriotism, or Canada overhearing the wreck next door. Probably all three. Track 9 - 'Ocean Next' • Sounds recorded underwater. Feels like moving. Transition and mournfulness, wrapped in something that sounds straight off 'Day for Night'. Track 10 - 'Machine' • The album closes funky and light. The groove catches you off guard after everything that came before. 'I'm a real machine. It follows.' A stadium-sized song that most people only heard in arenas. Stadium-sized, Greg says. He's right. Also In This Episode The context of 2016: jD and Greg run through the musical landscape - David Bowie's "Blackstar", Frank Ocean's "Blonde", Beyoncé's "Lemonade", Radiohead's "A Moon Shaped Pool", A Tribe Called Quest's "We Got It from Here". A year of established artists making career-best work. The Hip fit right in. Greg's daughter was born in January 2016. He heard the news about Gord standing in a coffee shop with her in a stroller. He heard 'Tired as Fuck' that same afternoon. "A mixture of emotions" doesn't cover it. Album lore: the record was almost called "Dougie Stardust". When David Bowie passed away, they changed the title. The original cover would have stayed the same. jD notes he cannot imagine this collection of songs under that name. Gord Downie solo news: announced during the recording of this episode - a new double album, "Away Is Mine", ten songs in electric and acoustic versions. Josh Finlayson asked for the acoustic takes as a memento. Gord was recording this in July 2017 - three months before he passed. "Getting the shit done for us. Colossal output." Fully & Completely: Redux Man Machine Poem tthpods.com 3 Sports: 2016 Stanley Cup (Penguins over Sharks, Metallica sang the anthem), Grey Cup upset (Ottawa over Calgary in OT), Kyle Lowry at Momofuku, salt-and-vinegar chips, a bootleg DVD incident that nearly ended a marriage before it started. Mary Hagen knew early she wanted to build something — launching her first business at 20. Today, she's the CEO of Colossal, a company that's quietly reshaped how fundraising works. Since joining, Mary has scaled Colossal by over 1000%, helping generate more than $207 million for nonprofits like the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Baby2Baby, PAWS, and the James Beard Foundation. But the real shift is how that money gets raised. Instead of relying on a few major donors, Colossal built a model around digital competitions and community participation — turning thousands of small contributions into millions raised. In this conversation, Mary breaks down what it actually takes to grow a purpose-driven company, why she believes leadership is about showing up — not just saying the right things — and how modern fundraising is moving away from exclusivity toward something far more accessible. Based on the Lee Child novels, the series delivers tightly constructed mysteries and satisfying payoffs that make it perfect comfort viewing for action fans. Jay is revisiting Twin Peaks Season 1, soaking in David Lynch's wonderfully strange blend of soap opera melodrama and unsettling mystery. Between cherry pie, coffee, and cryptic dream sequences, it's a masterclass in mood and quirky storytelling that still feels fresh decades later.     Sci-Fi Saturdays -  This week on Sci-Fi Saturdays Jay looks at the forgotten sci-fi gem Colossal (2017). It's a clever, genre-bending mix of kaiju chaos and personal drama, blending big sci-fi spectacle with intimate character study.
