2020’s Faith series has brought us incredible leaders across decades, generations, denominations, and ideologies. We've listened to what makes them excited to be in the faith right now and what's been challenging. We've talked about ways to build a brighter, more beautiful church. As we wrap this series, we're going to dig in a little deeper to one specific place, and we’ve enlisted three faith leaders to help us navigate through a much-needed discussion. And these faith leaders are members of the LGBTQ+ community—because it is possible to be a part of a church that is passionate about Jesus and affirming to LGBTQ+ groups. Matthew Vines is the founder of the Reformation Project, a nonprofit that educates Christians about the biblical case for LGBTQ+ inclusion. He's also the author of “God and the Gay Christian: The Biblical Case in Support of Same-Sex Relationships.” Michael Vazquez is the director of the Human Rights Campaign Foundation's Religion and Faith Program in DC. He leads efforts there to advance equity initiatives in faith communities. B.T. Harman is a content creator and speaker. His blog and podcast “Blue Babies Pink” shed some beautiful light on what it is like to love Jesus, love the church, and be gay. Each of these men has deep commitment to their faith and to the church, and during their formative years, they had to reckon with the truth that they were gay—and they experienced the full spectrum of pain and discovery that so often comes with this particular journey. Today we ask some hard questions: what does it mean to hold one another and our faith leaders accountable? And when it comes to affirmation, what's public and what's private? How can we be the best allies for our LGBTQ+ friends? How can we listen and avoid “canceling” one another if we don’t agree, or are there times when it’s called for? Our conversation is fully open, filled with grace and understanding, helping us to view things from different perspectives in the most rewarding way possible.
We are continuing our conversation this week around sexual orientation and the church with B.T. Harman. B.T. is the creator and author of the website Blue Babies Pink: A Southern Coming Out Story in 44 episodes. First as a blog, and then later in podcast form, BBP details B.T.'s story as a young man growing up in the church and coming to terms with his sexual orientation as a gay man. B.T. is a freelance content-creator for millennials and the brands that serve them. His consulting work focuses on brand strategy, design, marketing, social media, leadership, and more. B.T. and Colleen chat about how he went from denying his orientation, to a commitment to celibacy to finally taking an affirming stance and getting married himself. They also discuss whether this is an issue in which faithful Christians can disagree and how you can love and support affirming brothers and sisters whether or not you agree with them. Connect with B.T. Listen to the Blue Babies Pink podcast or read the blog. You can also find B.T. on his website or follow him on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. He's a great follow! Year of Action Do, as B.T. says, the work on this issue. Regardless of where you stand on the issue of sexual orientation in the church, whether you are affirming of gay marriage or not, seek out the story of a gay christian. Seek out many stories, as it is all deeply personal and nuanced. Suspend your opinion on the issue and seek out the story of someone who maybe falls on the opposite side of you theologically. Try to understand where they are coming from and the path they've walked. As BT said, do everything you possibly can to empathize from a human connection. Also discussed in the episode: The 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership by John Maxwell Traveling Mercies by Anne Lamott

Meet Brett, Producer at CNN, and B.T. Harman, creator of Blue Babies Pink. As our journey continues, this episode takes a slightly different and important perspective from newlyweds and thought leaders in the LGBTQ community. We learned some incredible advice for any parent who has a gay child. They talk about selflessness being the most important attribute in making marriage work. They challenged us with their thoughtfulness and we hope you will open your heart to learning from them as well. Welcome to the Love or Work Podcast, hosted by Andre Shinabarger (Physician Assistant, Grady Hospital) and Jeff Shinabarger (Social Entrepreneur and Founder of Plywood People). I invite BT Harman (Brett Trapp) to join me on this episode as we talk about life after Blue Babies Pink. I ask him ALL THE THINGS. We discuss how he overcame his fears to be authentic and bravely share his journey with the world. He shares what has broken his heart the most inside the LGBTQ Christian community as well as what pushed him to open up about his personal beliefs. He beautifully offers empathy and encouragement towards parents, friends and family of LGBTQ people and shares useful tips of how best to love and honor them. This is one of my favorite honest, rich conversations. It’s the final episode in the “For the Love of Exploring Our Faith” series, and you guys begged to hear from this week’s guest. Not that we blame you—we love him, too! Brett Trapp is a marketing consultant and storyteller who lives in Atlanta’s Cabbagetown neighborhood. The son of a Southern Baptist preacher from small-town Alabama, for more than a decade Brett kept a journal on being Christian and being gay. One morning in 2016, Brett hopped on Facebook and began sharing the story he had been writing privately for so long. In his forty-four-part series, Blue Babies Pink, Brett recounts his journey of growing up, coming out, and reconciling his faith. It’s equal parts whimsical, harrowing, hilarious, and wise.

Being a leader it can be easy to feel like you have to be “something”, but what do you do when there feels like there’s a dichotomy between who you are supposed to be and who you know you are?Can you face and compassionately lead someone with seemingly very different values than your own? Whether those values are generational I.E. Boomer Vs Millennial or for that matter what if they were faith based values? Some would say it’s impossible to lead without having to suppress parts of yourself… But what if being all of who you are, even the contradictory parts could actually make you a better leader, would you do it? find out what happens when you embrace all of who you are in leadership. Our guest on this episode is… Brett Trapp.Brett Trapp is a consultant, writer, and speaker. He was previously Vice President of Client Experience for the Booster-thon Fun Run an innovative school fundraising company based out of Atlanta. For over a decade, Brett was a key player in helping Booster raise more than $150 million for American schools.Within Booster, Brett Trapp led a team of creative’s that developed high-end character and leadership content for more than 1.3 million students annually. In late 2016, Brett launched “Blue Babies Pink” a 44-episode journey through faith, sexuality shame, loneliness, singleness, and emotional health. Brett Trapp, a pastor's kid from small-town Alabama, told his story of coming out in the Christian community on his blog "Blue Babies Pink." He talks to us about the author's who inspired him, the ideas he's exploring, and how he honors the people he writes for and about.
Brett Trapp of the online memoir/story/audio story Blue Babies Pink is a writer, speaker and marketing consultant whose story took my heart by storm this past spring. Brett's "Southern coming out story" has been described as the "Netflix of blogs" - and is the epitome of Brené Brown's "excruciating vulnerability." He risked a lot to tell his true story. And it's awesome. So I was thrilled to get him on the show to talk about what it really means to tell his own true story with so much grace - and to embrace not only the need for us as speakers and leaders to speak with vulnerability, but the power of that embracing as well.
NOTE: This is the finale of Blue Babies Pink. If you haven't read the previous 43 episodes, please do that before listening to Episode 44. Also, after listening to this one, be sure to check out the Epilogue for the final wrap-up.
