Now on that same day two of them were going to a village called Emmaus, about seven miles from Jerusalem, and talking with each other about all these things that had happened. While they were talking and discussing, Jesus himself came near and went with them, but their eyes were kept from recognizing him. And he said to them, “What are you discussing with each other while you walk along?” They stood still, looking sad. Then one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answered him, “Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who does not know the things that have taken place there in these days?” He asked them, “What things?” They replied, “The things about Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people, and how our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be condemned to death and crucified him. But we had hoped that he was the one to redeem Israel. Yes, and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things took place. Moreover, some women of our group astounded us. They were at the tomb early this morning, and when they did not find his body there they came back and told us that they had indeed seen a vision of angels who said that he was alive. Some of those who were with us went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see him.” Then he said to them, “Oh, how foolish you are and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have declared! Was it not necessary that the Messiah should suffer these things and then enter into his glory?” Then beginning with Moses and all the prophets, he interpreted to them the things about himself in all the scriptures. As they came near the village to which they were going, he walked ahead as if he were going on. But they urged him strongly, saying, “Stay with us, because it is almost evening and the day is now nearly over.” So he went in to stay with them. When he was at the table with them, he took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he vanished from their sight. They said to each other, “Were not our hearts burning within us while he was talking to us on the road, while he was opening the scriptures to us?” That same hour they got up and returned to Jerusalem, and they found the eleven and their companions gathered together. They were saying, “The Lord has risen indeed, and he has appeared to Simon!” Then they told what had happened on the road and how he had been made known to them in the breaking of the bread. Through conversations with others, with our community, and even with ourselves, we encounter Christ. I also shared about the importance of clarity through inner work gamit ang M.I.C.K.: Motivate, Inspire, Cheer, Be kind. Napag-usapan natin ang struggle ng pagiging [LGBTQ+]—[LGBTQ+] na nga, breadwinner pa! At kung bakit tila napakahirap para sa ating mga Pilipino ang mag-set ng boundaries sa ating mga mahal sa buhay. Hindi lang ito struggle ng [LGBTQ+] people kundi pati na rin sa ating straight allies. Ang pagsabayin ang pagiging anak, magulang, breadwinner, at tagapagtaguyod ng pamilya sa mga ganitong pagsubok. Mahalaga ang maayos na pag-uusap at pag-engage sa conversations that are uncomfortable but necessary. PART 3: CHRIST IN OUR MEALS Para naman sa ating ikatlong bahagi, ang ating tema ay “Christ in Our Meals.” Alam natin kung gaano kahalaga ang pagkain sa ating buhay upang tayo ay magkaroon ng lakas, makakilos, at makapagpatuloy sa ating journey. Gayun din kahalaga ang presensya ng Diyos sa pamamagitan ni Kristo. Ang pagkain ay esensyal upang tayo ay mabuhay. At kung babalikan natin ang naging paglalakbay ni Kristo kasama ang mga unang Kristiyano, malaking bahagi ng ministry ni Jesus ang umikot sa pagkain. Oh ‘di ba? Unlimited food! Sa ating Gospel nga, nakita natin na matapos silang magbahagi ng tinapay, doon lamang nila naunawaan na si Hesus pala ang kasama nila. Christ is revealed when the bread is broken. Isa sa pinakasikat na miracle ni Jesus ay ang pagpapakain niya sa 5,000 katao, at ang kwentong ito ay makikita sa apat na Gospels. At nang handa na, inutusan niya ang kanyang servant para papuntahin na ang mga ito. Ngunit wala ni isa sa kanila ang dumalo. At ang excuse? Sila ay busy bumili ng lupa, ng oxen, at ‘yung isa naman ay just got married. Umay, ‘no? So nagalit ngayon ‘yung host and told the servant to invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind instead of the wealthy friends who can repay them. Then the parable ends with a warning: “None of those invited will taste my dinner.” Sa Jewish culture, very symbolic ang mga banquets at isa itong serious social commitment. Kaya deeply insulting na after mong mag-accept, biglang hindi ka pupunta. Ang parable na ito ay ginamit ni Jesus to speak about God’s invitation to the Kingdom, tungkol sa radical na hospitality at inclusion. Malaking bahagi rin ng pagkain sa ating buhay. I mean, hello, not to state the obvious, isa sa aking love languages ay ang pagluto at paghain ng masarap na pagkain para sa aking mga mahal sa buhay. I also hold it as my personal advocacy ang magbahagi ng pagkain sa mga homeless whenever I am able. Para sa akin, ito ang pinakamadaling paraan upang iparamdam ang presence ni Kristong buhay, dahil ito rin ang mas kailangan nila sa mga sandaling iyon. Habang patuloy tayong lumalaban para sa mundo kung saan ang lahat ay binibigyan ng sapat sa araw-araw, ang mga kwentong ito ang nagpapaalala sa atin na Christ is present in our journey, in our conversations, and in our meals. Patuloy tayong nananawagan ng hustisya para kay Alicia Alano at sa iba pang nasawi noong April 19, 2026, sa isang engkwentro sa Barangay Salamanca, Toboso, Negros Occidental. Si Alicia ay isang estudyante at student leader mula sa University of the Philippines Diliman, at nasa Negros noon para sa community immersion at pananaliksik tungkol sa kalagayan ng mga magsasaka, kabilang ang mga alegasyon ng land grabbing at militarisasyon sa lugar. Imagine being killed in a supposed “legitimate encounter” against alleged members of the NPA. Ito ba ang kinabukasang nais nating ipamana sa ating mga kabataan? Isang mundong sapat na ang “umano” at hinihinala upang kumitil ng buhay ng mga pag-asa ng bayan? Kaya kailangan nating makisangkot at makibahagi sa difficult conversations upang labanan ang ganitong klaseng kaisipan at kultura ng karahasan. This event is also a popular culmination of what we learned sa Walk to Emmaus. Narinig natin ang journey ng ating Asian neighbors and their stories of struggles of being [LGBTQ+] Christians. Now they went through the same but different situations, just like the two disciples. Hindi nalalayo ang kwento natin as Open Table sa mga struggles ng ating [LGBTQ+] Christian siblings. Ang struggles nila sa mainland China, Korea, maging dito sa Taiwan, Japan, Hong Kong at iba pa, Christians are considered a minority. The Philippines may have the highest percentage of Christians, but we are also a minority within the wider church. We are here to tell our stories, to share a meal with each other, and be a holy conversation with a wider community. (Pasensya na po habang ano, kasama ‘yung sipon sa pagtanda…) To be with the wider community, to be in communion with each other, to be each other’s hope, knowing that even a small light in a great darkness is still light. I got this directly from a pastor from Japan kung saan she was asked just to remain silent and not embrace being [LGBTQ+] and Christian. Sa kwento ng isa nating church sa Singapore, they could not hold a Pride protest. And I will always remember the story of Pride from Bora, Korea. Isang straight sweet ally na literal na inalay ang kanyang buhay to fight along with her [LGBTQ+] siblings in Korea, even facing persecution from conservative churches and the government. I am truly blessed and honored to have met her here during Amplify 2018, and was saddened to hear about her passing a few years ago. When we recorded this episode two weeks ago, we knew that the Supreme Court was planning on releasing a judgment in Chiles v. Salazar — to decide whether Colorado's law banning conversion therapy (which is similar to laws in 22 other states) likely violated the First Amendment. We thought the decision might come in June. But it fell last week like a hammer, and has the potential to undo years of advocacy to ban treatments that have tried to "ungay" thousands of kids, teens, and adults. The judgment is devastating. But it also reminds us that just because a treatment is "legal" doesn't mean it's ethical — or even that it works. (It doesn't!) For thus it says in 1 Peter 2[:9], “You are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a priestly royalty.” Therefore we are all priests, as many of us as are Christians. But the priests, as we call them, are ministers chosen from among us. All that they do is done in our name; the priesthood is nothing but a ministry. This we learn from 1 Corinthians 4:1, “This is how one should regard us. Servants of Christ, and stewards of the ministries of God.” Let everyone therefore who knows himself to be Christian be assured of this: that we are all equally priests. That is to say, we have the same power and respect to the word and the sacraments. However, no one may take use of this power, except by the consent of the community, or by a call of a superior. For what is the common property of all. No individual may arrogate to himself, unless he is called. And therefore, this sacrament of ordination, if it is anything at all, is nothing else than a certain right, where by one is called to the ministry of the church. Furthermore, the priesthood is properly nothing but the ministry of the Word; the Word, I say; not the law, but the gospel. Even on the male and female slaves, in those days I will pour out my spirit. Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region around the Jordan were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the River Jordan, confessing their sins. But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Therefore, bear fruit worthy of repentance, and do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our ancestor,' for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. What many people do not know is that he was also a Bible scholar. Maraming gumugulo sa isip ni Martin Luther noon. Takot na takot talaga siya sa Diyos. The fear was very palpable. Hindi talaga siya mapakali. Walang panalangin, walang misa, walang sacred space na kayang mag-alis ng takot niya sa Diyos at ng pakiramdam na makasalanan siya, through and through. One of the suggestions given to him by the head of his religious order was to go to the university and study theology and the Bible. Eventually, he became an expert in the New Testament. Para sa akin, doon nagsimula ang kanyang critical response at critical view of the Catholic Church. Inaamin naman ng Catholic Church na mayroong mga abuses during that time. Some of these abuses can be read in the writings of Martin Luther. Isa sa mga tinuligsa niya ay ang hierarchy of the church based on priesthood, where ordinary people were treated as inferior. May mga sulat siya describing how priests and bishops treated ordinary people like basura, parang hayop, according to him. There was this strong distinction between the priesthood and the lay people, and he saw this as deeply oppressive. When he studied Scripture, one of the things he articulated—particularly in The Babylonian Captivity of the Church—was his critique of the seven sacraments. He argued that only two were truly sacraments, while the rest were ministries and did not carry special power or grace. Later on, Protestant scholars pointed out that the Greek word for priest, hierus, is almost always used in the New Testament to refer to Jesus Christ as the High Priest. The only other time it is used for people is in First Peter, where it says, “You are a royal priesthood, a chosen race.” One of the arguments, then, is that Jesus Christ did not try to establish a new priesthood in the way that it later developed in the Roman Church. Scripturally, the word for priest does not refer to church leaders. Leaders were called episcopos (overseers), presbyteroi (elders), and diakonoi (servants or ministers). There is a specific Greek word for priest, and it is not used for church leadership. Some Protestant arguments say that Jesus did not intend to establish a priesthood similar to the temple priesthood, which was hereditary and separated from the people. There are also interpretations pointing to the tearing of the temple veil at Jesus' death, symbolizing direct access to God's holiness for all. For Luther and the Reformers, ordination was not about special grace or spiritual superpowers. It was simply a difference in ministry. Any power connected to sacraments and rituals belongs to the whole community—to the priesthood of all believers. All sacramental authority has already been given to every baptized Christian. This is why some churches emphasize apostolic succession, while others do not. In Reformed, Protestant, and evangelical traditions—including MCC—ministry flows from baptism and faith, and leaders are discerned and called by the community. There is also a connection between the Reformation and Western democracy. The Reformers helped democratize Christianity by declaring that no special group has sole authority over Scripture and sacraments. It is the people of God who discern, and from among themselves, call leaders to serve on their behalf. For MCC, this matters deeply. MCC was formed by LGBTQ+ Christians who were excluded, rejected, or oppressed by their churches. From its earliest years in the 1970s, MCC affirmed that women could and should be ordained. That decision came very early in its life, even when many other churches still resisted women's leadership. As MCC grew rapidly across different countries, the question became both practical and theological: who will lead the church? Looking back to its Pentecostal and Baptist roots, MCC affirmed that the call to ministry is not limited by gender, sexuality, or status, but grounded in the priesthood of all believers. This week's episode examines the common arguments that are used in favor of affirming Biblical support for LGBTQ "Christians". There are five common lines of argumentation which have been used to alter the Church's historical position regarding sex and sexuality. I explain each tactic and why it is not a valid argument.  The main problem with accepting an LGBTQ "Christian" is that sin has been redefined. It's impossible to become a true Christian without repentance; therefore, we must accept God's definition of sin and submit to Jesus's call to repent. If we do, then we can be saved from any sin - no matter how great or small!

Their values, interests and worldviews can seem completely foreign to our own, causing rifts in our relationship almost daily. Navigating these choppy waters requires strategy and finesse so that we don't widen the gap even further.This week, we're learning how to bridge divides from someone who has made connections his life's work. We're joined by Justin Lee, author of the new book Talking Across the Divide: How to Communicate with People You Disagree With and Maybe Even Change the World.Justin has spent over 20 years facilitating thoughtful dialogue between groups that typically don't see eye to eye. As the founder of the world's largest LGBTQ Christian advocacy organization, Justin has firsthand experience bringing together people of divergent backgrounds. Now, he's sharing his tried and tested methods for overcoming conflicts by focusing on shared interests and storytelling.Even when parents and teens sit on what feel like opposite sides of the ideological spectrum, we likely have more in common than we realize. By approaching rifts strategically instead of confrontationally, we can narrow divides and start effecting real change.The Ego Protection InstinctWhen tensions run high, our first instinct is often to double down on our position. After all, no one wants to look like the “bad guy” or feel embarrassed when realizing they're wrong. This ego protection instinct kicks in, causing both parties to dig their heels in further in order to save face.Justin explains that the key to working through this instinct is to approach the conversation calmly and strategically. Making teens defensive will only cause them to reject our perspective entirely. By listening first instead of accusing, we make space for their viewpoint while getting them to lower their guard. This thoughtful approach makes them more receptive later on when we share our own story.Telling Our StoryWhen it comes time to share our side, Justin explains that facts and figures often fall flat. What really helps the other person relate to our position is hearing the story behind why this issue matters so much to us.By explaining our personal experiences, worries, disappointments and more, the other person gains empathy and understanding as to why we ended up with these strong beliefs. Storytelling helps them step into our shoes, seeing our views as reasonable instead of attacking our character. It also allows both parties to recognize each other's stories as valid without having to denounce the other.Plotting a Way ForwardWithout a plan for how the conversation should end, we risk leaving the other person hurt or resentful. Justin encourages parents to think critically about what they actually want to gain before diving into tense talks. Do we want to “win” by making the teen feel stupid? Or do we want to gain a better understanding between us?By visualizing a story in which the teen's past actions were reasonable and our new way forward makes sense, we provide a path that allows them to save face while still growing. With thoughtful compromises focused on shared interests rather than contradictory positions, we stand a better chance of inching closer together.No matter how far apart parents and teens may feel at times, Justin proves even groups with the most divergent views can find common ground through strategic, thoughtful dialogue.
