We've loved Robert Deeble for a long time around here. His brand of thoughtful alternative folk fit right in with artists like Over The Rhine, Vigilantes of Love, Innocence Mission, and Victoria Williams - and his side gig as a graphic artist lent a gorgeous visual perspective to all of his releases. His output has slowed over the last couple of decades as he became a successful psychologist and built a thriving practice in Oregon. So it was very good news indeed when we heard that he was about to release a new album - produced by Ric Hordinski no less! With many of us feeling more than a little on edge these days, we thought a touch-base with our favorite songsmith-turned-therapist was long overdue. In this special @45RPM episode of the show we focus on clips of JJT's full conversation with Robert. These bits focus on his new album - the beautiful collection entitled The Space Between Us that is currently seeking support via Kickstarter for a vinyl and CD release. And if you dig this, you can head over to OUR PATREON PAGE to hear the REST OF THE STORY! Patreon now allows a "free membership" - and it would be awesome if you would take a minute to sign up (for free) and take a listen. We will be posting more special content exclusively on that page (and even more on the paid side) from now on! And don't forget to head over to Kickstarter and back Robert's awesome project!  For full show notes visit TrueTunes.com/deeble

We knew that Over The Rhine's Nowhere Else Festival was going to be something special. We've heard about the meals, the music, the songs being sung under a big tent in their wide Ohio backyard. And yes, we grew up seeing Over The Rhine play show after breathtaking show under a similar tent at the Cornerstone Festival in West Central Illinois. We knew it would be great. But we were still not prepared for just how wonderful two days of understated, organic, family-style music could be. A steady drizzle of rain couldn't come close to dampening the spirits on that rural farm, and on this episode of the podcast, we do our best to take you there.   One of the hallmarks of Nowhere Else is that Karin and Linford of Over The Rhine always assemble a treasure trove of talent to accompany them for their “musical family reunion.” This cast – often comprised of fellow Americana (and Americana-adjacent) artists they have met out on the road – play concerts, participate in writer rounds, and offer creative workshops and seminars. While some will usually be relatively familiar to fans of this kind of music – and at least one will have earned “legend” status – there will always be at least a few that are relative unknowns. Though she has been a regular at Nowhere Else in recent years, we were not familiar with soul / gospel / r&b artist and full-time “culture coach” Nikki Lerner until shortly before the festival. But after we attended her morning session, called “Finding Your Voice Through Improv,” we knew she needed to join us on the podcast. I'm sure you will find her just as brilliant, insightful, hilarious, and soulful as we have.   And Bruce has loaded up the Jukebox with records from ALL of the artists on this year's Nowhere Else lineup. In addition to Nikki, you'll hear tunes from Iris Dement, Carrie Newcomer, Hayes Carll, The Winetree, Courtney Marie Andrews, Carolina Story, John Fullbright; Wille Tea Taylor, Ben Sollee, Vance Gilbert, and of course, Over the Rhine.   If you would like to support the show, please consider joining our Patreon community or dropping us a one-time tip and check out our NEW MERCH!   For more info visit the SHOW NOTES page at TrueTunes.com/Lerner   For more info about the Nowhere Else Festival (or to order tickets for Sept '23) go to http://www.nowhereelsefestival.com/

Police are searching for at least two suspects after nine people were injured in a shooting in Cincinnati's Over-The-Rhine neighborhood early Sunday morning.  Officers were called to the 1300 block of Main Street near downtown shortly before 1:40 a.m. following reports of a disorderly crowd.  Police said two groups started fighting while officers were clearing the crowd from the street. At least two individuals involved in the altercation pulled out firearms and exchanged multiple rounds of gunfire into the crowd.  In a press briefing, Cincinnati police said eight men and one woman were hurt and treated for injuries that were not life-threatening. The victims' ages range from 23 to 47.  An officer fired one shot at an unidentified suspect who was leaving the scene, but it's unclear whether the suspect was struck by gunfire, according to police.  "Today's events are completely and totally unacceptable. The use of guns to solve disputes cannot become a normal part of our culture. I want to express the city's gratitude to the officers on the scene. Their quick response likely saved many more from injury and prevented the loss of life," Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval said in a statement.  If anyone witnessed the shooting or has additional information, they are asked to contact the Cincinnati Police Department Criminal Investigations Section at 513-352-3542. BEERS (11:42) : Our Cincinnati journey continues! For our next stop, we hit a local (and even national) favorite in Rhinegeist Brewery. Located in the historic Over-The-Rhine district, Rhinegeist's home was a pre-prohibition bottling plant, and has since evolved into a beer brand loved by Ohioans across the state. Assistant GM Aislinn Brown and Director of Education Chris Shields sit down with us over a few pints of Rhinegeist beer. We discuss the role that Cincinnati played during prohibition and the German influence on the taproom & beer style. We also try Rhinegeist's flagship IPA, Truth, which made the list of top 100 beers in the world in 2014. BUSINESS (41:34): Bradley Adams and Ali Bozzutto found a real problem upon which they built Aerogami - the accessibility of information. Picture this: you get into a small fender-bender, and you exchange information with the other party. But there's only one problem; since you have your insurance policy information on the app, and you're in an area with no service, you don't know your policy number! Aerogami's products aim to solve many different challenges in a “no-code” fashion - from travel and insurance to public safety. We chat with Bradley and Ali at the Founders & Friends event at Long Live Beerworks in Providence, RI. BALLS (Presented by MANSCAPED): The Final Four…er, the Blue Bloods Classic…has arrived! Kansas, Duke, Villanova, and North Carolina are the last teams standing in a year that's featured more mayhem than recent seasons. Duke and UNC are set to meet for the first time in March Madness history; what kind of fireworks should we expect? Is this Coach K's destiny? Can Villanova get back to the championship? Now that baseball's within reach, we set the stage for the return of the MLB. BBBBONUS: If you have a phone, you saw Will Smith slap the shit out of Chris Rock. Staged or real? Two Part Interview: We continue our coverage of the Founders and Friends live show, plus we kickoff our interview series from Bockfest. Beers (10:53): Everybody knows the conglomerate called The Boston Beer Company. For the common beer drinker, Boston Beer (and Sam Adams) isn't a name you'd associate with Cincinnati. But for the local community, it's one-in-the-same. Jim Koch, the founder and craft beer pioneer, grew up in the Queen City, where his father and grandfather were both employed at local breweries. In 1997, Koch purchased a brewery; and years later, the Sam Adams Tap Room opened in the heart of the Over-The-Rhine district in Cincinnati. General Manager Keith McEly sat down with us as our first interview of the Bockfest weekend to discuss the origins of Sam Adams and the Boston Beer Company, which run straight through the Queen City. Keith also shared the rich history of “Utopias,” a special beer collection, the importance of getting involved in the local Cincinnati community, and what's next for the Sam Adams brand. Business (35:26): Every founder has a story, and Mike Neilan's story comes from an accident. After a skateboarding injury that took him out, Mike picked up a camera in 2009 and hasn't turned back since. With a new passion, Mike went to college, gained experience, built his portfolio, and years later met his Co-Founder (ironically named Mike). The two met at a job and instantly hit it off. They knew their talents meshed well, and were ready to make a brand for themselves. It wasn't until 2018 where their dreams became a reality. Now a few years later, over 50 clients worth of work, a new office space, and a team being built, Focus Forward Media has taken the Ocean State by storm. We sit down with Mike to talk about starting a company in Rhode Island, how to take a leap of faith, and what the future looks like for Focus Forward Media. Balls: It's bracket busting season! One thing is for sure…even after the season that we cover the most basketball, we're just silly little bloggers with our silly little opinions in the end. We break down our brackets so far, discuss some of the big upsets (shoutout St. Peter's), and gaze into the crystal ball for the future. OVER THE RHINE are the critically acclaimed husband and wife duo celebrating 30 years of making understated yet emotionally-charged music. Linford Detweiler and Karin Bergquist (aka Over the Rhine) have established a reputation for delivering genuine, heartfelt stories of the human condition that are both empathetic and provocative. The pair's expansive, incisive lyrics and earthy sound are often inspired by time and place. Each album represents a certain chapter in their lives – what they have experienced, and the resulting emotional landscape. ‘Love & Revelation' the first new music in four years finds the beloved duo in a deeply reflective place, contemplating both personal loss and the wavering of America's collective compass. BRIDGE 19 is a touring band based out of Louisville, KY. They offer a sound pallet of moody electric guitars, horns, accordion, & pedal steel - with rhythmic stylings of Nola jazz meets americana. Vocal harmony is the corner stone, and makes Bridge 19 unique and transfixing. Sharing stages with Brandi Carlile, Dr. Dog, Langhorn Slim, Sarah McLachlan, Asleep at the Wheel, Richard Thompson and more, Bridge 19 has come of age with its new album “In the Afterglow” like a fine Kentucky bourbon.

Episode 7 of Season 3 Taren is the owner of “Sweet Petites Desserts”. Let’s dive into Taren’s interview. Being a 3rd generation baker, cooking came second nature to me. My grandmother imparted the love and skill of baking into me as a small child. Although I love to cook, it is a gift that I seldom shared outside of friends and family. Shortly after being was married, and while I was 7 months pregnant, I was laid off from my job at IBM. Being that far along in my pregnancy made it almost impossible for me to search for a new position, so I decided to stay home with my baby. After staying home for two years, I returned to Corporate America in a sales position, which I hated. During my search for purpose, God spoke to me through a friend. Over dinner one day she said,” You should sell your desserts.” Being a programmer, I am a numbers person, and in my head those numbers just did not add up. It seemed too extreme, but she was truly the voice of God. I wrestled with that concept for 30 days. During those 30 days, God revealed to me how all of my life’s experiences would be an asset to me in building my business. I developed my plan, wrote my vision, and have not looked back. As an entrepreneur, I knew that I was going to always think about what’s next. I knew I would have to keep things fresh. I knew that I was going to have to offer something that no one else in the city was offering, because people always go to what they know. I call Sweet Petite Desserts a family business, even though I am a sole proprietor. Five years ago, I hit rock bottom Neither me nor my mentor realized that my bakery was considered a destination spot. Even though I was located less than a half block away from two restaurants, no one would walk to the bakery for dessert, especially during adverse weather. I would go weeks without a customer. After a conversation with my landlord, God moved. My landlord, who is a major stake holder in the revitalization of the Over The Rhine neighborhood, took over my marketing, and started to drive traffic to my bakery. They believed in me to the point that they allowed to me stay in the building for one year totally rent free. They also paid for my utilities for that entire year. That was my defining moment and it was a sign from God that I was right where I was supposed to be. When you are on the right path, many doors will be opened for you, just be obedient to the instructions that God places in front of you. That also let me know that there is enough for all of us. There is no need for anyone to covet their neighbors’ dreams. I have five steps that I take to push past fear: 1. Define what fear is to you. Fear is not failure, is not always negative, and should not be scary. Fear can also be a warning to protect you. I like to channel fear from a curiosity standpoint. I want to see what is on the other side. 2. Don’t fear the process. You have to go through something to get somewhere. Embrace the process and learn from it. 3. Know who you are when you are getting ready to birth something. Do the work to birth the dream, because you know at the end you are going to have something beautiful. 4. Be sure about what you are doing. Are you trying to work a get rich scheme? A hobby? What is your why? Do your best and allow God to do the rest. 5. Look at fear as fuel, and not something to stop you. Once you make a decision, live with it. Don’t carry that dead weight around with you. Let things go. Stay focused to your path. Recognize fear, but always ask why you are here. Deal with it, and keep it moving. If you are ready to expand your business, let’s schedule time to chat. Not only is the Enneagram a great tool for gaining self-knowledge, but it is also a gateway for building strong relationships. When you understand that your way of seeing the world is not the only way to see the world, it creates room for compassion and appreciation toward others. The Enneagram teaches us how to communicate, and in turn, strengthens our relationships with family, friends, and co-workers. This week I invited husband and wife, David Dark (Enneagram 9) and Sarah Masen (Enneagram 6) to join me in a conversation about how the Enneagram has helped them identify the similarities and differences in their personalities and how that knowledge has shaped their marriage.  With Enneagram Nines “optimistic to the point of denial” and Enneagram Sixes “realistic to the point of oblivion,” Dark and Masen demonstrate how they try to live in a balanced way that fosters a supportive and secure relationship where they both feel valued.   ABOUT DAVID:          David Dark is the author of Life's Too Short To Pretend You're Not Religious, The Sacredness of Questioning Everything, Everyday Apocalypse: The Sacred Revealed in Radiohead, The Simpsons, and Other Pop Culture Icons and The Gospel According To America: A Meditation on a God-blessed, Christ-haunted Idea. His work has appeared in MTV News, Books & Culture, Pitchfork, and the Oxford American. Following years of teaching high school English, he received his doctorate in 2011 and now teaches at the Tennessee Prison for Women and Belmont University where he is assistant professor of Religion and the Arts in the College of Theology.   ABOUT SARAH:         Sarah Masen is an American singer-songwriter originally from the suburbs of Detroit, Michigan. For several years she has lived in Nashville, TN with her husband, author David Dark, and their three children.  Originally signed to Charlie Peacock’s “re:think” label, and subsequently to Word Records, she is now independent. Sarah's music has been described as pop alternative and is written from a background featuring influences as varied as Rich Mullins, Keith Green, 10,000 Maniacs, Over The Rhine, Victoria Williams and Julie Miller. Sarah's live performance has elements of the innocent approach of the last two artists, although most of her music comes from more of an intellectual background, discussing life, relationships and faith, in stark contrast with the angst-driven, dark and cynical approach you can find in a lot of the alternative music today.

OVER THE RHINE is the southern Ohio-based husband-and-wife team of multi-instrumentalist/vocalist Linford Detweiler and vocalist/multi-instrumentalist Karin Bergquist. The acclaimed folk/Americana duo return to the WoodSongs with a brand new double album titled 'Meet Me At The Edge Of The World'. The songs were all recorded live and were inspired by the couples move to a pre-Civil War farm in southern Ohio eight years ago. The album was produced by Grammy-winning producer Joe Henry. COURTNEY JAYE is a Nashville based singer/songwriter whose angelic, high plains vocal and its steady reverb wash fits in well with other female alt-country artists like Neko Case and Jenny Lewis. Her latest LP, 'Love and Forgiveness' is an organic and rootsy album that recalls the classic 70s-inspired pop of her heroes Neil Young, Linda Ronstadt, The Band and Fleetwood Mac.

The southern Ohio-based husband-and-wife team of multi-instrumentalist Linford Detweiler and vocalist Karin Bergquist new CD is a fan-funded record on OtR's own Great Speckled Dog label (named for the couple's Great Dane, Elroy). DAVID WAX MUSEUM was voted "one of Boston's hottest new bands" by The Boston Globe and awarded as the Americana Artist of the Year. They have performed at the Newport Folk Festival (and were featured on NPR's All Songs Considered as one of Newport's highlights), toured with The Avett Brothers, shared bills with Carolina Chocolate Drops and constantly tour around the country.
