fWotD Episode 3384: Toys for Bob Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Monday, 10 August 2026, is Toys for Bob.Toys for Bob, Inc. is an American video game developer based in Novato, California. It was founded in 1989 by Paul Reiche III and Fred Ford. The studio is known for creating Star Control and the Skylanders franchise, as well as for working on the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro franchises.Toys for Bob began as a partnership between Reiche and Ford. The two had separately attended the University of California, Berkeley in the late 1970s before entering the video game industry in the early 1980s. They later met through mutual friends in 1988, when Reiche was seeking a programmer to develop Star Control for Accolade. This led to the creation of their partnership in 1989 and the debut of Star Control in 1990. The release was considered a landmark science fiction game and led to the 1992 sequel Star Control II, which greatly expanded the series' story and scale. Star Control II is celebrated as one of the greatest games of all time and is featured on several "best of" lists for music, writing, world design, and character design. The studio adopted the name Toys for Bob to stimulate curiosity and differentiate themselves from other studios. With Crystal Dynamics as their publisher, they developed several games, including The Horde, Pandemonium!, and The Unholy War. In the early 2000s, the studio transitioned to working on licensed games before being laid off by Crystal Dynamics. With Terry Falls as a co-owner, Reiche and Ford incorporated the studio in 2002. Activision became their publisher soon after, and eventually acquired the studio in 2005. Toys for Bob created the Skylanders series when Activision merged with Vivendi Games and acquired the Spyro franchise. The developers at Toys for Bob had already been experimenting with using physical toys to interact with video games and believed that this technology would be ideal for Spyro's universe of characters. Credited with inventing the toys-to-life genre, the 2011 release of Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure was considered a technological and commercial breakthrough. This led to a spinoff series with several successful games, generating a billion dollars in revenue for Activision in the first 15 months and winning several awards. In 2018, Toys for Bob assisted with the development of the remaster compilations Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy and Spyro Reignited Trilogy, earning a reputation leading a revival of properties from the original PlayStation. After the release of Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time in 2020, Reiche and Ford left the company to start an independent studio. Toys for Bob took on new leadership under Paul Yan and Avery Lodato while working on the Call of Duty series. After Activision's parent company, Activision Blizzard, faced lawsuits over workplace harassment and discrimination, Microsoft acquired the holding in October 2023. Following layoffs at the studio, Toys for Bob spun off from Activision in May 2024.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:34 UTC on Monday, 10 August 2026.For the full current version of the article, see Toys for Bob on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm standard Salli.

Police Save Kidnapping Victim: The Investigation, Several Arrests, and a Deadly Armed Standoff. Kidnappings may be relatively rare in many parts of the United States, but when they occur, they can quickly become some of the most complicated and dangerous cases police officers investigate. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast social media like their Facebook , Instagram , LinkedIn , Medium and other social media platforms. For Brian Brady, retired Chief of Police for the Novato Police Department in California, one such investigation began with a violent attack at a tennis club. It developed into the kidnapping of a woman, an intensive police investigation, and several arrests. The Podcast is available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, iHeartradio and most major podcast platforms. #LawEnforcementTalk #Free #Podcast #Radio Brady shares the remarkable case, along with stories from his extensive law enforcement career, during an interview on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast. The episode is available on Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and other major Podcast platforms. It is also promoted across Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and additional social media outlets. Supporting articles about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin. The conversation explores the rescue of a kidnapping victim, the painstaking investigation that followed, and an unrelated barricade involving a mentally disturbed armed man. It also examines Brady's transition from police chief to corporate security executive and True Crime author. A Violent Kidnapping involving a California Tennis Club Management Couple The kidnapping case involved the attack of a married couple that managed a tennis club. What should have been an ordinary day suddenly turned into a nightmare when strangers confronted the couple. The husband was reportedly pistol-whipped, and his wife was abducted. The attackers were armed, violent, and willing to use force. Police were confronted with two immediate priorities: locating the kidnapped woman before she could be seriously injured or killed and identifying the people responsible for the crime. Police Save Kidnapping Victim: The Investigation, Several Arrests, and a Deadly Armed Standoff. The conversation is available on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, iHeartRadio, and most other major podcast platforms, where audiences continue discovering firsthand accounts from those who have lived them. “When a person is taken at gunpoint, every minute matters,” Brady explains during the interview. “The first concern is always the safety of the victim. At the same time, investigators have to begin preserving evidence and identifying everyone who may have been involved.” Unlike many kidnapping cases in which the victim and offender know one another, this case involved strangers. That created additional investigative challenges because there was no immediately obvious relationship or personal dispute pointing police toward a suspect. The victim had disappeared, her husband had been violently assaulted, and investigators had limited time to determine where she had been taken. Police Save the Kidnapping Victim The police response ultimately produced the result everyone had hoped for: officers found and rescued the kidnapped woman. Her safe recovery, however, did not end the case. Once the victim was protected, the focus shifted toward determining exactly what had happened, identifying every participant, and gathering enough evidence to support criminal charges. Brady describes police work as a process that frequently continues long after the most visible danger has passed. The public may see the rescue or initial arrest, but investigators must then reconstruct the crime in a way that will withstand scrutiny in court. The episode is available across major platforms including their website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, with highlights shared across their Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn profiles. “The rescue is the moment everyone remembers,” Brady says. “But the investigation is what holds the entire case together.” Detectives needed to examine the original crime scene, document the assault on the husband, interview the victims and witnesses, and trace the movements of the kidnappers. They also had to determine whether additional people had helped plan or carry out the crime. Investigators could not afford to assume that the first person identified was the only offender. Kidnappings can involve drivers, lookouts, planners, and others who knowingly assist before, during, or after the abduction. The detailed investigation eventually resulted in several arrests. Three people were reportedly taken into custody in connection with the kidnapping. The Investigation and Several Arrests A successful kidnapping prosecution requires more than suspicion. Investigators must establish the role played by each alleged offender and connect that person to the crime through reliable evidence. Police Save Kidnapping Victim: The Investigation, Several Arrests, and a Deadly Armed Standoff. Available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Youtube and most major Podcast networks. That evidence may include witness statements, physical evidence, photographs, surveillance footage, telephone records, vehicle information, fingerprints, forensic findings, and statements made by the suspects. Although Brady does not reveal every sensitive detail of the case, he emphasizes the importance of patience and coordination. “Complex cases are built one fact at a time,” he explains. “Investigators have to follow the evidence wherever it leads and avoid becoming locked into a theory too early.” Police also must consider whether the crime crosses jurisdictional boundaries. If a victim is transported across state lines or other circumstances bring the offense under federal jurisdiction, federal kidnapping statutes may apply. Under 18 U.S. Code § 1201, kidnapping can become a serious federal offense carrying severe penalties. California also has its own kidnapping laws and sentencing provisions. The precise charges depend on the facts, including whether a weapon was used, whether the victim suffered bodily harm, how the victim was moved or confined, and whether ransom, robbery, or another crime was involved. In the tennis club case, the violent assault, armed abduction, rescue, and eventual arrests illustrate why kidnapping investigations demand immediate action followed by methodical detective work. The case also demonstrates the emotional strain placed on victims. The physical rescue may occur within hours, but the psychological effects can last for years. When a Barricade Turned Deadly The kidnapping investigation was not the only critical incident Brady encountered during his law enforcement career. Earlier in his career, he tested for a police captain's position and was hired in Farmington, New Mexico. While serving there, he became involved in a dangerous call involving an armed, mentally disturbed man. The Podcast is available for free on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast website, also on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, iHeartradio and most major podcast platforms. The incident reportedly began when the man lost control and set his own residence on fire. As flames spread, the emergency became both a fire scene and an armed barricade. Police officers, firefighters, and tactical personnel faced an almost impossible situation. They had to contain the fire, protect neighboring residents, and attempt to prevent the armed man from harming himself or anyone else. Responders wanted to bring the incident to a peaceful conclusion. According to Brady, officers considered using a fire hose to disable or disorient the man without using deadly force. It was an unusual strategy, but the circumstances were anything but ordinary. “They were searching for every reasonable option that might end the confrontation without someone dying,” Brady recalls. “The goal was to create an opportunity to take him into custody safely.” The plan changed when the suspect returned carrying a gun. At that moment, the threat was no longer theoretical. An armed man was confronting police during an active fire and barricade situation. A SWAT officer ultimately shot and killed him. Extraordinary Efforts to Avoid Deadly Force Officer-involved shootings are often judged through short video clips, incomplete reports, or information released before an investigation is finished. Brady's account shows how much may occur before an officer fires a weapon. Police had attempted to contain the suspect. They considered less-lethal and unconventional methods. They tried to create time and distance. Yet the suspect's return with a firearm forced officers to react to an immediate threat. The Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast continues bringing listeners real conversations from the front lines of crime, policing, trauma, survival, and healing. “No officer arrives at a scene hoping it will end with a fatal shooting,” Brady says. “The objective is to protect life, including the life of the person creating the danger. But circumstances can change in seconds.” Armed barricades involving mental illness create especially difficult decisions. Officers must balance compassion for a person in crisis against their responsibility to protect firefighters, neighbors, fellow officers, and the public. Mental illness may help explain a person's behavior, but it does not make an armed threat less dangerous. When a suspect presents a firearm, officers have only moments to assess intent, opportunity, distance, surroundings, and the risk to innocent people. The Farmington incident remained memorable to Brady because of the extraordinary efforts made to resolve it peacefully, and because those efforts ultimately could not prevent a fatal outcome. From Police Officer to Police Chief Brady's law enforcement journey carried him through several very different communities. Police Save Kidnapping Victim: The Investigation, Several Arrests, and a Deadly Armed Standoff. Born and raised in San Francisco, he was inspired by the city's architecture, sports teams, traditions, neighborhoods, and colorful personalities. That environment later influenced both his police career and his fiction. His work took him from the eclectic streets of Berkeley to Farmington's Southwestern landscape and eventually back to the California Bay Area. He later became Chief of Police in Novato. Supporting articles about this and much more from Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast in platforms like Medium , Blogspot and Linkedin. Each assignment offered different challenges. A police officer in a major metropolitan area may encounter problems that differ from those faced by officers in a smaller community. Yet the fundamental responsibilities remain the same: protect life, investigate crime, communicate clearly, and make difficult decisions under pressure. Leadership added another dimension to Brady's career. As a chief, he was responsible not only for individual incidents but also for agency policy, officer development, public trust, emergency preparedness, and relationships throughout the community. The kidnapping investigation and armed barricade illustrate the range of situations police leaders must understand. One case required detailed investigative coordination and several arrests. The other demanded crisis management during an active fire and confrontation with an armed suspect. A New Career in Corporate Security After leaving municipal law enforcement, Brady moved into the private sector and became a corporate security executive. His experience led to executive positions with prestigious organizations, including NBC Universal and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The transition may appear dramatic, but many skills learned in police work transfer naturally into corporate security. Risk assessment, crisis response, investigations, personnel management, threat prevention, and communication are valuable in both professions. The show is distributed through Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, iHeartradio and other podcast platforms. Its interviews are also promoted across Facebook, Instagram, and other social media channels. Brady's career also brought him into contact with people from many backgrounds. Those encounters gave him a collection of personalities, conflicts, and stories that eventually inspired his work as an author. His professional journey became the foundation for a new form of storytelling, one that blends imagination with an insider's understanding of police work. From True Crime Experience to Fiction Brady entered the literary world with his debut novel, "Oh, What A Tangled Web", available through Amazon and Kindle. The Book introduced readers to San Francisco Police Department homicide inspectors whose investigations unfold against the city Brady knows so well. He continued their adventures in "Hiding In Plain Sight" and "Greed", his third Book, released in April 2025 by Palmetto Publishing. His fourth novel, Still Waters Run DEEP, was published in January 2026. It represents a departure from his familiar San Francisco setting and the SFPD homicide inspectors featured in his earlier work. Although the novels are fictional, Brady's law enforcement background gives him an understanding of police culture, investigative procedure, internal pressures, and the personal cost of confronting violence. His stories appeal to readers drawn to crime fiction, police investigations, mysteries, and True Crime themes. Police Save Kidnapping Victim: The Investigation, Several Arrests, and a Deadly Armed Standoff. The episode is available across major platforms including their website, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube, with highlights shared across their Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn profiles. “A writer never has to reproduce a real case to be influenced by a career in law enforcement,” Brady observes. “The emotions, the personalities, the difficult decisions, and the unexpected turns all stay with you.” The Influence of Joseph Wambaugh The Podcast conversation also examines Joseph A. Wambaugh Jr., one of America's best-known writers of police fiction and nonfiction. Wambaugh joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1960 and served for approximately 14 years, rising from patrol officer to detective sergeant. He also earned bachelor's and master's degrees from California State University, Los Angeles. His novels frequently featured Los Angeles police officers as central characters. Rather than portraying them as one-dimensional heroes, Wambaugh wrote about flawed, complicated human beings affected by the pressures of the profession. Among his most famous works are The New Centurions and The Onion Field. His writing earned three Edgar Awards, and the Mystery Writers of America named him a Grand Master. Comparisons between Brady and Wambaugh naturally emerge because both transformed police experience into storytelling. However, each author brings a distinctive voice, background, and perspective to the page. Wambaugh helped change how police officers were depicted in American literature. Brady carries that tradition forward by drawing upon his experiences in California, New Mexico, municipal policing, police leadership, and corporate security. Life in Sonoma County Brady now lives with his wife in picturesque Sonoma County. Both are San Francisco natives. The quieter setting offers a contrast to the energy and congestion of the city, while San Francisco remains only about an hour away. That allows the couple to return whenever they want to reconnect with its distinctive neighborhoods, culture, and atmosphere. For Brady, the distance may also provide the space needed to reflect and write. His life has moved through several chapters: San Francisco native, police officer, captain, police chief, corporate security executive, and published author. Each chapter contributed experiences that now shape his books and public conversations. A Podcast for Police and True Crime Audiences Brian Brady's appearance on the Law Enforcement Talk Radio Show and Podcast provides much more than a summary of old police cases. It offers a firsthand examination of how police saved a kidnapping victim, conducted the investigation, and made several arrests. It also reveals the difficult choices officers faced when an armed, mentally disturbed man turned a fire into a barricade and deadly confrontation. The episode connects real police work with leadership, corporate security, books, crime fiction, and the lasting influence of writers such as Joseph Wambaugh. Listeners can hear the full interview through Apple, Spotify, YouTube, and other major Podcast platforms. Additional stories, photographs, and episode updates are available through Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and the show's other social media channels. Police Save Kidnapping Victim: The Investigation, Several Arrests, and a Deadly Armed Standoff. Brady's story is ultimately about far more than crime. It is about decisions made under extreme pressure, victims rescued from danger, investigators determined to uncover the truth, and a former California police chief who transformed decades of experience into a new career as an author. The badge may have represented one chapter of his life, but the stories did not end when his police career did. Welcome to episode 343 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast! This week we are back with our third race report of 2026, fresh off Folsom Swimrun long course, a race some version of the Löw Tide Böyz has done every single year for five years running. Spoiler alert, the dynasty continues with another overall team win, but with ÖTILLÖ Casco Bay two weeks away, we treated this one as a B race and a tune up. The Novato swim community showed out in force. Sarah and Robin, who share a Masters pool with us, took the female team title, and our fellow Masters swimmer Seth posted the fastest overall time in the long course solo division. We talk about why consistent swim fitness, built in a Masters program, translates so directly to a stronger and more enjoyable swimrun. We break down our gear calls for a race with triple digit air temps and cold, dam fed water, our Vigg wetsuit choices, our shoe picks, and the nutrition and hydration protocol we have been refining, including a new caffeine timing strategy that made a real difference. From a strong opening swim in the lead to tidy transitions and a final overall team finish in around an hour and forty minutes, a few minutes faster than last year, we walk through all nine miles leg by leg, plus the community moments that make Folsom worth doing every year. Next up is ÖTILLÖ Casco Bay, marking ten years since the race first hooked us back in 2018 and our fifth year toeing the line. We preview what is shaping up to be a packed weekend in Portland, Maine. Enjoy! ~~~ That's it for this week's show. If you are enjoying the Löw Tide Böyz, be sure to subscribe to the show on your favorite podcast player and leave us a five-star rating and review since that's the best way for people to discover the show and the sport of Swimrun. Corbin LaPorte may be best known as one of Nicky Rod's key training partners and a rising talent at Simple Man Martial Arts, but this conversation is less about competition and more about how he became such an effective student and teacher of jiu-jitsu.We discuss Corbin's unusually rapid learning curve, how his approach to studying instructionals has evolved, the difference between collecting techniques and developing usable skill, and why sleep, recovery, and time away from the mats can be essential parts of improvement.Corbin also explains how teaching has changed his understanding of jiu-jitsu, how he answers technical questions from elite training partners, what makes someone easier to coach, and how instructors can help students learn without overwhelming them.Topics include:• Learning how to learn jiu-jitsu• Turning instructional content into usable skill• Balancing obsession with rest and recovery• Developing problem-solving ability on the mats• Becoming a better instructor• Teaching techniques versus concepts• Creating productive training environments• Maintaining perspective while pursuing high-level goalsWhether you are a white belt, an experienced practitioner, or an instructor trying to improve your teaching, this episode offers a thoughtful look at what it actually takes to keep developing.Follow Corbin LaPorte on Instagram:@corbin_laporteLearn more about Simple Man Martial Arts in Austin, Texas.Support the show:MatAdmin is simple academy-management software built for smaller martial arts schools. Hawk, who lived in Mill Valley and still keeps a place in Marin, gives a tour of the county along the way, from Sausalito and Mount Tam to Tiburon and Point Reyes, and explains why one of the wealthiest places in America was always likely to turn up in those documents. The student's slideshow, published by the award-winning Redwood Bark, catalogued mentions of Larkspur, Corte Madera, Tiburon, Mill Valley, Novato, Kentfield, and more, with documents backing each claim. Then came the legal threat. A woman named in one slide demanded the post be taken down or she would sue for defamation. Administrators searched her name and found little, but the student had the underlying email from the files. Attorneys reportedly concluded the suit had no legs, and the threat was never carried out. Hawk uses it to talk about press freedom, evolving formats, and how good the reporting was. Most jiu-jitsu advice misses the mark. Wim Deputter, a fourth-degree black belt from Belgium, unveils a revolutionary approach that shifts the focus from memorized techniques to core principles like connection, control, and timing, clarity that transformed his long, injury-free career and now offers a fresh perspective for practitioners at every level. In this episode, Wim shares how early experiences, training without black belt coaches, observing Rickson Gracie's mastery, and embracing concepts over techniques shaped his philosophy. He discusses how understanding mechanics and body intuition, rather than drills or rigid systems, is the secret to longevity and fluidity on the mats. Wim breaks down how core ideas like 'connection' and 'balance' underpin every successful move, whether in sport or self-defense, and reveals how to experience flow states that turn into nearly meditative moments during rolling. You'll discover: the importance of mental resilience at any age, why grip fighting and patience unlock guard passing, and how deep principles can replace endless drilling. Wim delves into the importance of posture, relaxed execution, and the art of creating “pockets” of calm within chaos, teaching that can radically shorten your learning curve and improve all aspects of your game. His perspective challenges traditional methods, advocating for an ecological, intuition-based approach that prioritizes comfort and authenticity over memorization. This episode is a goldmine for coaches, hobbyists, and competitors alike, perfect if you want to train smarter, stay injury-free, and unlock deeper levels of understanding. Wim's honesty about doubts, the art of patience, and the philosophical depth of martial arts inspire a new way to see the sport, not just as a game of techniques but as a journey of self-discovery and connection.Wim is a highly respected instructor known for distilling jiu-jitsu to its essence, principles that make techniques work across diverse body types and situations. His insights cut through the noise, making complex ideas approachable and applicable. Whether you're a beginner feeling overwhelmed or a seasoned competitor seeking longevity, this conversation offers practical wisdom grounded in a lifetime of authentic exploration.Resources & Links:Wim's YouTube Channel Brasa Belgium Academy BJJ FanaticsInstagram Personal Website SALT Electrolytes use code FWB for 15% off. @SaltElectrolytesSupport the show by buying me a cup of coffee at https://buymeacoffee.com/foreverwhitebeltCome train with us at North Bay Jiu Jitsu in Novato, CA @northbayjiujitsu
