It was a warm and sunny day in the summer of 1978 when Ernest, a kind man with a soft spot for kittens, had an unforgettable experience that would alter his life forever. He and his wife lived in a charming apartment on Parliament Street in the Cabbagetown neighborhood of Toronto, where they were currently caring for a litter of energetic felines. One day, one of the kittens disappeared, prompting Ernest to search for it around their home. As he combed the area, he stumbled upon a dark opening that seemed to lead into a cave. Despite only having a small flashlight with him, Ernest mustered up his courage and ventured about 10 feet inside. To his astonishment, he came face to face with a creature unlike anything he had ever encountered before.Ernest kept this extraordinary encounter to himself out of fear of ridicule or labeling it "crazy." However, the word eventually spread to local newspapers. It's that time of year again as digital media editor Warren Frey and correspondent Peter Kenter delve into the spooky and ghoulish side of construction with a look at their favorite structures that may or may not be host to unexplained apparitions and forces beyond life and death. Peter interviewed Haunted Walks director Jim Dean for an upcoming story about infrastructure hauntings around Ontario, including the tale of the tunnel monster of Cabbagetown, a legend from 1979 about a Gollum-like creature hiding underneath Parliament St in Toronto, a haunted bridge in Scarborough, and an investigation into the paranormal properties of the CN Tower. Warren also spoke to ghost stories and odd structures from Edmonton, including the University of Alberta, his alma mater, which sports both the spirit of a nurse wandering Pembina Hall and urban myths about the maze-like structure of the Biological Sciences Building, and spoke about the Winchester House in San Jose and Borley Rectory, allegedly the most haunted place in the entire United Kingdom. As is tradition, Warren and Peter also both gave their favorite haunted houses in literature and film to round out the podcast. You can listen to The Construction Record on the Daily Commercial News and Journal of Commerce websites as well as on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Amazon Music's podcast section. Kelly Hogan is fantastic singer who sounds equally at home singing lead or providing sublime harmonies with Mavis Staples, Neko Case, the Decemberists and her fellow members of the Flat Five. She delivered a torchy jazz-twang-rock hybrid with the Jody Grind, her early '90s band from Atlanta's Cabbagetown neighborhood, before moving to Chicago and proving in many contexts that she can sing anything. Chatting in person with her cuddly dogs Eddie and Ernie at her side, Hogan tells stories of tragedy and comedy, the futility of trying to abandon music in Chicago and the joy of discovering the perfect harmony partner. Everyone loves working with Hogan, and when you hear her sing—or talk—you understand why.

This October, Jim had an opportunity to do a guest spot on an engineering podcast. The show, called Engineering Legends, is produced by Brown and Caldwell, an engineering consulting firm that works in the U.S. environmental sector. Each year around Halloween they do a special episode about haunted infrastructure. Jim was able to share with them the story of Toronto's Cabbagetown Monster, which lurks in the forgotten tunnels that run beneath the city. The second guest on the show, Nicole Jones, owns a haunted and potentially cursed former dam site in Tennessee. She shares some chilling stories, including the ghost of a young girl who was spiky teeth and an entity that would take on Nicole's appearance and regularly interact with her staff – a ghostly doppelganger!

On this installment of Expanded Perspectives, the guys start the show off talking about Halloween, Cam's recent deer hunt and more. Then, a listener writes into the show with a lifelong experience with ghosts or Shadow Beings. For their entire life, this person and several of their family members have seen over time, these strange Shadow Beings. What are they? What do they want? And, why are they following the same family from home to home? After the break, Cam brings up some truly bizarre sightings that have occurred in our brother to the north Canada. From strange sightings of Devil Monkeys, which are large baboon-like primates to water cryptids like Ogopogo. Ogopogo is a cryptid lake monsterreported to live in Lake Okanagan in British Columbia, Canada. In 1926 a sighting is claimed to have occurred at an Okanagan Mission beach. Then, the Tunnel Monster of Cabbagetown, Ontario. One summer's day in 1978 in an area of the city known as Cabbagetown. A man named Ernest stumbled upon a secret entrance to the tunnels while searching for a lost kitten. Certain he had heard distressed mewling down in the alley beside his Parliament Street apartment the night before, he decided to army-crawl into the culvert about ten feet, flashlight in hand. The tunnel gradually widened, its black depths like an abyss. Something skittered ahead and he steadied the flashlight beam, hoping to see his kitten. But it was no cat caught in the beam. A pair of slanted red eyes bulged at him above the gaping, large-toothed mouth of a hairy, grey, bi-pedaled creature about three feet long. Introduction: Welcome to Five & Thrive: a weekly podcast highlighting the Southeast's most interesting news, entrepreneurs, and information of the week, all under 5 minutes. Company Coming Up: This company coming up was founded in 2017 and is headquartered in historic Cabbagetown in Atlanta. They have raised $5.3M to date and solve a very real problem in several markets. The company is called BoxLock and they are shaping the future of unattended delivery technology. What does that even mean Birdsong? So thousands of companies in healthcare, construction, transportation and warehousing have serious problems regarding safety, reliability, and efficiency when it comes to assets that are stored or transferred. Think of anything ranging from tools on a construction site to shipping containers to even election boxes. BoxLock's Supply Chain Access Control Platform is used by companies like UPS Healthcare, University of Nebraska Healthcare, LUX Diagnostics (local to Atlanta), just to name a few. This market is massive and I just love finding not only passionate CEO's like Brad Ruffkess who are pioneering this field but then learn they are walking distance to Carroll Street Cafe! They are hiring right now and trust me when I say this: growing very very fast. Links in the show notes. Beta Product of the Week: This week's beta product of the week comes from two Auburn engineers and it is called Smart Stall. Nearly everything in the bathroom workflow is automated and touchless. You can get soap, paper towels, water, dry hands and a quick flush without touching any surface, so why are we still latching and unlatching the bathroom stall? Chase and Wynn are the co-founders solving this problem with an early prototype already built. If you are a building owner, tenant rep, or CEO looking to automate your latches, check out SmartStall. Link in the show notes. Jump to the Front: This is a new format called Jump to the Front. For companies who are offering early access to product launches and customer codes, we deliver them here. Mary Ladky is the executive director of the Children's Book Bank. Strategically located between Cabbagetown and Regent Park, the book store is set up in a converted Victorian style home. It is beautifully laid out and is very child friendly. After admiring the surroundings, you might notice that something is missing. There is no checkout counter. And that's because all the books are free. Mary talks about the history of the book bank and presents a compelling case on the benefits of children learning to read and the consequences for those who do not. We soon learn that Mary is a fierce champion of child literacy. Thanks for listening! In this episode Sam & Lady Q are talking all things women. They'll be updating you on the #FreeBritney movement and how things are looking surrounding her quest to be free of her conservatorship. Also, they'll fill you in on celebrated American athlete Sha'Carri Richardson's latest endeavors involving a race set against Jamaican track stars/olympians. They will also be discussing the tragic loss of a fellow ATLien & beloved member of our community Mariam Abdulrab. We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family & friends of Mariam. We would also like to take this opportunity to say that men must do better in dismantling misogyny & patriarchal mindset/practices that put so many women/femme people in harms way. This is never okay & always disgusting. It is 100% on all of us to create a better world that provides everyone safety & tolerance. But it is especially on those who benefit the most from it- and in this case that means men. If you would like to leave flowers or any type of offering to pay respects there is a mural of Mariam across from the bar Estoria on Wylie Street in Cabbagetown (located near Little 5 Points) Resources: GoFundMe for Mariam's family to cover expenses: https://gofund.me/7afd06d9 Housing, Covid-19 Resources, Social Services & Domestic Abuse resources for women in Atlanta: https://atlantawomen.org/what-we-do/resources/ Resources for men to better show up for women: 1. https://vawnet.org/sites/default/files/assets/files/2016-09/10ThingsMenCanDo.pdf 2. https://menengage.unfpa.org/en/news/7-ways-men-can-be-better-allies-gender-equality

Christina Calayca, a spiritual and hardworking young woman, was a faithful and passionate volunteer and upcoming educator in Toronto, Canada. Her undying go-getter personality and dedication to her family and church were cut short by unexplainable, unsolved disappearance in August of 2007, leaving all who knew her across the Cabbagetown neighborhood of Toronto and the entirety of Canada at large grasping for answers in a sea of evidence that drowned us all in doubt…As a hope to provide more substantial reasoning built upon observable evidence and situational analysis, this is an examination of Christina Calayca’s disappearance at the Rainbow Falls Provincial Park and the mysteries of Ontario’s expansive backwoods...This is Cold Case Detective.Case File Photographs:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1xj7NcdrMWiaZ1F6HTa3tv6CLAE9ap79S?usp=sharingRelevant Links[Canadian Crimeopedia Article][Reddit Thread][Kate Barker Article][National Post Article][The Star Article #1][The Star Article #2][Saskatoon Freezing Deaths Wiki]Researched and written by TJ RueschEpisode narrated by William EarlMusic by CO.AG________Our episodes deal with serious and often distressing incidents. This week I pulled an episode that my Patreon supporters heard back in July. The 1897 Fulton Bag and Cotton Mill strike is all about the racial division between the working poor of early Atlanta. Instead of banding together, to strengthen their union and fight for higher wages, the white poor of Cabbagetown would rather strike than be pegged as equal to Black factory workers. Kevin lives and works in Toronto's Cabbagetown district in the city's east end. Kevin's personal story of using focusing as a way to overcome physical challenges are a testament to how powerful a process focusing is.
