This week, Michael shares a personal breakthrough that shifted the way he relates to both business and money — one that led to him enjoying his work more consistently and, as an early return, making considerably more money at the same time. In this episode: Why the "outside-in" story about money and stress is so convincing — and why it still isn't true The mirror test and the social media test: two simple ways to see that your state of mind is the variable Why separating your enjoyment of your work from your financial results actually improves both The shift in thinking that can lead to more clients, more income, and enjoying every minute of it ________________________________________

The Scottish mystic Syd Banks once said "When the good Lord made us, he gave us a free will and a free mind." But have you ever stopped to think about what those two things actually mean - and what we tend to do with them? Today, Michael explores the two gifts that make us human being, why they're such a mixed blessing, and how they give us a remarkable freedom we don't usually notice that we have. In this episode: Why the real power isn't in what comes to mind, but in what you choose to give your attention to The story of Dolores — who woke up happy every morning, then spent the next hour making herself miserable Why life is harder for humans than it is for sunflowers (and why that's also the point) The one simple rule of thumb for deciding which thoughts are worth keeping How to align your free will with something bigger than your to-do list ________________________________________
There's a belief buried so deep in our culture that almost no one questions it: the more you enjoy your work, the less you should expect to get paid. But what if that's simply not true? Today, Michael revisits a deceptively revealing exercise from his coaching work - a nine-square grid used by a venture capitalist to expose people's hidden assumptions about enjoyment and income. In this episode: The nine-square grid exercise - and what almost no one ever questions when they do it Why the cultural belief that "harder = more money" and "enjoyable = less money" isn't factual What you actually get paid for (hint: it's not your experience of the work) What changes when you separate your enjoyment from your income in your own mind
In episode 365 of The Real Jason Duncan Podcast, you were probably told that college is the price of success. Ali Hemyari never paid it and spent twenty years building the proof that it was never true. Ali Hemyari is the founder of Nashville K-9, recognized by Bloomberg as one of the world's greatest canine training facilities, the only civilian in the state of Tennessee to complete the police-mandated SWAT Canine School recognized by the National Tactical Officers Association, a TEDx speaker, keynote speaker, pilot, triathlete, Make-A-Wish fundraiser, and author of The Success Code. He has built close to twenty companies across multiple industries and commands K-9 units for multiple police departments — as a volunteer. None of it required a diploma. Today, Ali sits down with Jason for a conversation that's going to make a lot of guidance counselors uncomfortable. The lie is one of the most universally distributed beliefs in the world: go to college, that's where success comes from, without it, you're starting behind. And here's what that belief actually does — it hands the definition of readiness to an institution. It tells people to wait for permission they already have. Ali stopped waiting. Then he built twenty companies to show what that looks like. This episode dives into: 1.Why the college lie is the most universally distributed lie handed to teenagers — and why questioning it still feels irresponsible to most people 2.Where Ali's belief about college came from growing up in the eighties and nineties — and how deep it ran before he started seeing through it 3.How he ran a marketing company in college, funneling students to bars on the UT Knoxville strip — and what that taught him that the classroom never did 4.The Vanderbilt MBA grads who showed him 50 charts for a dog treat business the dogs wouldn't eat — and what happened when they ignored his advice 5.Why years one and two of college are largely wasted — and what years three and four actually offer 6.Walking into the SWAT Canine School as the only civilian in the room — what he had that the credential guys didn't when real pressure started 7.The HVAC tech making $300K and the mechanic who out-earns the MBA — and why nobody wants to say it out loud 8.Why professors who have never practiced what they teach are producing laborers, not entrepreneurs 9.His TEDx talk: "Dogs don't fail, leadership does" — and how that one line maps directly onto the lie about college 10.Why the institution doesn't make you successful — the person leading does 11.The real reason universities won't fix this problem (it starts with money and ends with tenure) 12.The lie hiding inside work-life balance — and what he actually wishes he had been told at twenty 13.What he knows now that he wishes the world knew If you've ever wondered whether the path you were handed was the only path — or if someone you love is about to spend $200,000 to find out the hard way — this episode is required listening.
In 2026, the smartest person in the room is losing. Not to better ideas. To better packaging.Brian Miller built a 3.7M-view TEDx talk using a framework that fits on one page. He spent twenty years figuring out why brilliant people fail on stage, and it has nothing to do with charisma, voice, or slides. In this conversation, we get into: Why asking "what do I want to say?" is the question that kills most talks before they startWhat every audience is silently deciding in the first 60 seconds (and how most speakers fail it)The counterintuitive move that makes people beg for your solutionWhy changing someone's mind requires changing their thinking before you offer anythingBrian is a former professional magician turned speaker coach. His clients speak at TED-style stages in rooms where failure is not an option.
Your greatest leadership value isn't birthed from your perfection, but from your pressure points. The things that broke your heart or kept you up at night are the exact experiences that unlock genuine self-empathy, and it is only by directing accurate empathy inward that we can effectively externalize it to lead others. In this episode, Sharlee Dixon speaks with with Dr. D. Ivan Young, a globally recognized authority in human behavior, leadership psychology, and the science of emotional mastery. What if just 40 seconds of genuine compassion could tangibly lower a cancer patient's anxiety—and what if this "wonder drug" holds the key not just for healthcare, but for every leader who wants to create more fulfilling workplaces and customer experiences? The impact of this question is profound. On this episode of the Delighted Customers podcast, I sat down with Dr. Stephen Trzeciak ("Dr. T"), whose groundbreaking research proves that compassion isn't just good for our conscience—it's scientifically measurable, essential, and transformative for both the receiver and the giver. Whether you lead a care team, a corporate department, or simply want more meaning in your professional interactions, Dr. T's work illustrates how compassion can drive loyalty, improve outcomes, and even keep your best people from walking out the door. You should listen to Dr. T because his expertise bridges the gap between touching stories and hard data. With two acclaimed books—Compassionomics and Wonder Drug—plus clinical leadership at the front lines of healthcare, Dr. T demonstrates how compassion delivers ROI. He shares evidenced-based tactics any leader can use to operationalize compassion, strengthen teams, and create unforgettable customer moments—even in high-stress, time-pressured environments. Here are three compelling questions Dr. T answers on this episode: How can business leaders operationalize compassion without losing authenticity or making it "just another initiative"? What simple, proven behaviors can leaders implement today to measurably improve compassion in their teams? What's the REAL ROI of building a compassionate culture, and how can you quantify its impact to win executive buy-in? Happy July—so excited to be back with you to talk about one of my favorite books I've read lately, Dr. Michael Norton's The Ritual Effect: From Habit to Ritual, Harness the Surprising Power of Everyday Actions, which came out April 9, 2024. We have talked at length about habits on the show, but today, ritual gets its due. Dr. Norton explains what ritual is, and how, in his words, ritual can shift our lives from black and white to Technicolor. We talk about the power of ritual, what the difference is between habit and ritual, how ritual can change us and help us find the more we are seeking (again, in Dr. Norton's words), how rituals emerge in the first place, if there is such a thing as a bad ritual, and if a person can overdo rituals or have too many rituals. We talk about everything from rituals in marriage—definitely pay attention to the clinking forks story—to ritual in grief, and how he's felt about the overwhelmingly positive response to the book since it came out over a year ago. Dr. Norton is a professor of business administration at the Harvard Business School; he is a longtime expert on human behavior, and he has also co-authored with Elizabeth Dunn Happy Money: The Science of Happier Spending. His TEDx talk, “How to Buy Happiness,” has been viewed nearly 4.5 million times, and you may have seen his work in The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, Scientific American, and numerous other outlets from print to television, radio, and podcast. We're certainly happy to have him on this podcast. The Ritual Effect: From Habit to Ritual, Harness the Surprising Power of Everyday Actions by Dr. Michael Norton

In this episode of Healthy Mind, Healthy Life, we dive deep into the science of inclusion with Paolo Gaudiano, a former aerospace engineer turned DEI expert. Paolo, the author of Measuring Inclusion: Higher Profits and Happier People Without Guesswork or Backlash, breaks down how businesses can quantify the impact of inclusion, avoid common DEI pitfalls, and boost their bottom line. He shares compelling analogies, including why just hiring for diversity isn't enough—and how creating a truly inclusive environment is what leads to real business success. If you're a leader, entrepreneur, or professional looking to make smarter, data-driven business decisions about diversity, this episode is for you! About the Guest: Paolo Gaudiano is the President of Aleria, a DEI tech company, and an adjunct professor at NYU Stern. With a background spanning neuroscience, AI, and corporate strategy, Paolo has dedicated himself to shifting the DEI conversation from soft talk to hard data. His TEDx talk on inclusion was featured on the main TED platform, and his book is a must-read for leaders navigating today's complex workplace dynamics. Key Takeaways: ✔️ Inclusion is the Foundation – Diversity is the result, but inclusion is the key action businesses must take to improve retention and performance.✔️ Measure Inclusion, Not Just Diversity – Simply hiring more diverse employees doesn't work if they don't feel included. Retention and workplace experiences matter.✔️ The Cost of Exclusion is Real – Companies lose money when employees leave due to non-inclusive environments.✔️ Data > Guesswork – Leaders need quantifiable methods to track inclusion, not just policies and quotas.✔️ Avoiding Backlash – The DEI backlash is fueled by misconceptions; businesses must frame inclusion as a business strategy, not just a moral cause. [01:54] Tim introduces guest Nick Jonsson, a TEDx speaker and author. [02:54] Nick shares his background—born in Sweden, educated in Australia, and living in Southeast Asia for 20 years. He discusses his early experiences with alcohol in Sweden, where access was heavily regulated. [04:20] Drinking became a problem when Nick moved to Australia at 23, where alcohol was widely available and socially encouraged. [05:55] Drinking escalated in Asia, leading to health issues. Even after hospitalization in Thailand, he initially denied alcohol as the cause. [07:52] Nick describes his attempts to quit drinking, culminating in a failed attempt on his birthday in 2018, which led him to seek medical detox. [09:33] He began his sobriety journey with AA, attending daily meetings for the first few years. [10:03] He's been sober for 7 years. [11:21] Nick discovered that about 33% of senior executives in Singapore were lonely and isolated. He realized this was a problem. This was the beginning of Nick writing Executive Loneliness. [12:32] His TEDx talk is partially based on the book where he talks about getting healthy and getting proper sleep. [13:26] He studied everything on sleep. One of the top tips he discovered was taping your mouth. [15:01] His Ironman numbers improved when he got extra sleep. [17:47] Community support, including AA and men's groups, played a crucial role in maintaining long-term sobriety. [19:01] It's helpful to be an authentic groups that aren't just about sobriety. [20:51] Ironman racing was part of his life before sobriety, but his performance improved drastically after quitting alcohol. [22:15] One of the things that has changed for Nick is his ability to ask for help and be more vulnerable. [23:08] Finding mentorship and being part of an elite triathlon training group helped him excel as an athlete. [25:15] In order to train, he became extremely disciplined and also stopped watching news. [27:37] Physical health became a priority, especially for managing high cholesterol. Instead of medication, he chose daily exercise. [29:17] He discusses the impact of isolation and anxiety on mental and physical health, sharing how unresolved stress led to psychosomatic illness. [31:31] People need personal and professional safe spaces and friend groups that they can talk to. [33:27] Leaders in high-stress environments need to prioritize self-care rather than glorifying overwork. [35:02] Social media has played a significant role in spreading awareness about sobriety and mental health. [36:12] Nick shares his most unexpected lesson. He encourages listeners to acknowledge and talk about their struggles. [37:55] If you're trying to get sober, talk to someone. He has free resources in the back of his book Executive Loneliness. "The bigger the roles that I got, the more I ended up drawing on what I had learned in improv and standup. Why was no one talking about how valuable humor is as a skill? So I realized maybe I should.” Drew Tarvin is the world's first and only Humor Engineer (not just this podcast's co-host). On a How To Live podcast conversation with co-host Sharad Lal, Drew shares not just his career journey - but practical skills on how humour can amplify leadership and why it's more than just a tool for entertainment. Drew studied engineering at THE Ohio State University, and was hired to P&G for his technical skills where he worked on global roles in his hometowns of Cincinnati and New York City. Yet, it was humour—not engineering—that became his edge in the workplace. By using humour, he diffused tension, built strong relationships, influenced others, and accelerated his career — in fact, he became P&G's first ever - self proclaimed - corporate humorist. Ultimately this led Drew to make the entrepreneurial leap — founding Humor That Works, a company that has helped 10,000+ leaders in over 100 organisations—including IBM, GE, the FBI, AND P&G —harness humour to lead effectively. His TEDx talk on the skill of humor has been viewed 15MM+ times. You can learn more about Drew's work @ drewtarvin.com. Are you struggling to grow your business and wondering how to stand out in a crowded marketplace? In today's competitive environment, building a strong personal brand has become an essential tool for entrepreneurs, leaders, and business owners to differentiate themselves and drive growth. Personal branding goes beyond having a logo or a website—it's about building a reputation that resonates with your audience and establishes trust. In this episode of Fordify LIVE, Rory Vaden, co-founder of Brand Builders Group, dives into the critical role that personal branding plays in business growth and long-term success. Personal branding is not just for influencers or celebrities; it's a powerful asset for any business leader looking to expand their reach. Rory emphasizes that people don't just buy products or services—they buy into the people behind them. Your personal brand serves as the bridge between who you are and the value you provide to your audience. If you're looking to build a brand that attracts the right clients and generates more opportunities, the discussion with Rory outlines why focusing on personal branding is one of the smartest moves you can make for your business. One of the key challenges business owners face is finding clarity in their messaging. Rory's insights into personal branding highlight the importance of defining your unique value and being intentional about how you communicate it. By focusing on your core message, your personal brand can become a powerful tool for cutting through the noise and connecting with the people who matter most to your business. It's not about being everything to everyone, but rather, being clear about who you are and what you stand for. When your personal brand reflects your authentic self, it becomes a magnet for clients, customers, and opportunities. Rory also discusses how building a personal brand goes hand in hand with credibility. It's one thing to have expertise, but it's another to communicate it effectively to the right audience. A strong personal brand does just that—it signals authority, trust, and reliability. Rory shares how even the most successful entrepreneurs and executives invest in personal branding as a way to continually build their influence and create lasting connections with their audience. Your personal brand is the key to establishing a strong professional presence that positions you as a leader in your industry. In addition to building credibility, personal branding also accelerates business growth by creating a foundation for long-term relationships. When people trust your brand and believe in your message, they're more likely to remain loyal and recommend your services to others. Rory explains how personal branding is not a one-time effort; it's an ongoing process of refining your message, expanding your reach, and consistently delivering value. This approach leads to exponential growth, as your personal brand continues to evolve and attract more opportunities over time. The conversation with Rory underscores the importance of personal branding as a strategic investment in your business. As more entrepreneurs recognize the value of branding themselves, those who take the time to build their personal brand now will be better positioned to grow their influence and achieve long-term success. By honing in on your story, your message, and the value you bring to the table, you can create a brand that not only drives business growth but also sets you apart from the competition. Watch the full episode on YouTube. If you've been wondering how to elevate your business and make a lasting impact in your industry, investing in personal branding is the way forward. What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of wealth? For most people, it's tangible—money in the bank, real estate, stocks, or physical assets. But let me introduce you to a critical concept that doesn't always get enough attention: intellectual property (IP). Today, I'm diving into why it matters and how it can make or break your business. Are you protecting your intellectual property by taking the necessary steps to ensure your ideas are protected and monetized? https://www.youtube.com/live/8qJefZzioqE Author and entrepreneur Kary Oberbrunner has made it his mission to help people protect their ideas, brands, and creative work. In our conversation, Kary shared some powerful lessons and strategies about IP that every business owner, entrepreneur, and even everyday creator needs to understand. The Surprising Truth About Protecting Your Intellectual Property Kary kicked off the conversation with a mind-blowing statistic. Back in 1975, only 17% of the S&P 500's assets were intangible—things like patents, trademarks, and other IP. Fast forward to today, and a staggering 90% of the value of those same companies is now tied up in intangible assets. In fact, by 2024, they estimate this number to be as high as 96%! If that doesn't get your attention, I don't know what will. In short, the world has shifted. We're no longer in a world where physical assets dominate. Instead, your ideas, your brand, and your processes are often your most valuable business assets. And yet, many of us overlook the importance of protecting them. About Kary OberbrunnerWhy You Must Protect Your IdeasUnderstand the Value of Your Intellectual PropertyTiming is Everything in Protecting Your Intellectual PropertyProtecting Your Intellectual Doesn't Have to Be Complicated or ExpensiveProtecting Your Intellectual Property is an Ongoing ProcessProtect What's Yours, Before It's Too LateTake Control of Your Intellectual Property TodayBook A Strategy Call About Kary Oberbrunner KARY OBERBRUNNER is a Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author of 14 books. As CEO of Igniting Souls® and Instant IP™ he helps abundant-minded & coachable-competent entrepreneurs PUBLISH, PROTECT, and PROMOTE their intellectual property and turn it into 18 streams of income so they can change the world. An award-winning novelist, screenwriter, and inventor, he's been featured in Entrepreneur, Forbes, CBS, Fox News, Yahoo, and many other major media outlets. His TEDx has been viewed over 1 million times. As a young man, he suffered from severe stuttering, depression, and self-injury. Today a transformed man, Kary ignites souls: speaking internationally on a variety of topics and consulting the world's top entrepreneurs and brands regarding publishing, protecting, and promoting intellectual property. He has several earned degrees, including a Bachelor of Arts, Masters in Divinity, and Doctorate in Transformational Leadership. He also serves as the Berry Chair of Entrepreneurship at Cedarville University, where he teaches on the topics of Entrepreneurship and Digital Marketing. Why You Must Protect Your Ideas If you're a business owner or an entrepreneur, you already know that your ideas, your innovations, and your unique ways of doing things are what set you apart. But here's the challenge: most of us don't think about protecting those ideas until it's too late. That's why this conversation with Kary Oberbrunner was so important. His focus on helping businesses recognize their intellectual property as their greatest asset—and protecting it—was eye-opening. What if someone came along and copied your brand, your process, or your proprietary method? Without protection, you could find yourself out of business or stuck in a legal battle. But protecting your IP is not just for giant companies like Apple or Nike. It's something we all need to think about—whether you're running a family business, a startup,

James Inedu George, One of the most eminent and influential West African architects and designers of recent decades recognized for his innovative approach to solving complex urban challenges, and most famously his brilliance with space and design. He is the founding partner and Design Lead at HTL Africa Ltd, Tao South Africa, and HTL Asia Plus, which works on projects around the world and is widely considered “among the most significant in contemporary architecture.” Born and raised in Zaria, Nigeria, Jame's passion for architecture blossomed under the influence of his vibrant hometown, known for its historical significance. His early career accolades include winning the Sahara Energy young architect student competition, setting the stage for a career characterized by keen attention to social issues in architecture, housing deficits, and economic disparities. James is recognized for his innovative approach to solving complex urban challenges, and most famously his brilliance with space and design. James's professional journey is distinguished by his unique ability to address complex urban issues through inventive architectural solutions. His career milestones include designing key pieces for the 2003 Nigerian presidential inauguration and developing a replicable $10,000 sustainable house in Lagos, which demonstrated the feasibility of affordable housing intertwined with economic opportunities for its residents. In 2008, James founded HTL Africa, a research-driven architectural firm dedicated to addressing the specific challenges of West African environments. HTL Africa is today one of the most prolific architectural practices from the continent, with a varied body of work and a myriad of impressive ongoing projects beyond Africa. The practice's work ranges from master plans to the restoration of historic buildings, urban planning and all aspects of design. Honored internationally, including a nomination for the prestigious Rolex Mentor, Protegé Art Initiative A fervent advocate for adaptive reuse, James has been instrumental in revitalizing structures and infusing them with new purposes, long before it became a mainstream architectural trend. In Ghana for example, it restored an already defunct 200-year-old Presbyterian church into more than just a spiritual centre but a major tourist hub to last for centuries more. Currently underway is the first of its kind Transcorp Hilton Event Factory, a disused valley warehouse transformed into a 5,000 seater state-of-the-art venue, amongst many others. James's contributions have been honored internationally, including a nomination for the prestigious Rolex Mentor, Protegé Art Initiative, a gold mention for the Home Africa Crisis organized by the UN. He actively participates in exhibitions like the Biennale d'architecture d'Orleans in France, Venice Biennale, showcasing his "Miracle Room" installation in 2019. His TEDX talk, "Invention of isi ewu," delves into his studio's work and the concept of Affordacity (affordable city). Show Highlights Integrating traditional African designs with sustainable practices. James' firm work on residential, commercial, and performance buildings. Challenges of recycling materials in Nigeria. Focuses on ‘local sustainability' - combining contemporary design with traditional practices Exploring building permeability and energy efficiency. Developing an 'energy bill' concept for cities. Tying contemporary high end design with traditional practices. Holistic use of different materials to support sustainable processes, availability, and finance in the region. Energy balance needs to exist from the onset for the architecture to work. “What we've been learning is that sustainability has to be ingrained in it. In that sense, a building must be responsible first and foremost. When I say responsible, like how you and I are responsible, it must act as a citizen, so it must pay tax. So if you look at it from that perspective, our buildings are paying tax because they outlive us. So if they pay tax and they are responsible citizens to the environment, sustainability starts to rewrite itself and develop differently. So that's the trajectory that we've gone.” -James Inedu George Show Resource and Information Connect with Charlie Cichetti and GBES GBES is excited our membership community is growing. This podcast is a deeply personal one for me. Not just because I resonate so much with Jassa and his experience of not having a true sense of identity, but because I'm expecting a child with my wife late this year who will be of mixed heritage. My wife is Italian and I'm Indian so our child will be both Indian and Italian, rather than half Indian and half Italian. I never really thought of being half something and half something else as ever really something to pay attention to, but recording this podcast with Jassa and reading his story has made a real impact on me.In the same way John Agard educated us all with his wildly popular poem “half caste”, about the impact of words on people's sense of worth, I feel Jassa has educated me on the use of my words and thoughts, regardless of whether there is ill intent or malice behind them. Words mean so much and I'd never want anyone, let alone my unborn child, to feel anything other than a whole person.Jassa Ahluwalia is a British actor, writer, filmmaker and trade unionist. Born in Coventry to a white English mum and a brown Punjabi dad in 1990, he attended school in Leicester and was raised in an extended family environment. He spoke English in the playground, Punjabi with his grandparents, and spent various summer holidays in India. He came to prominence as Rocky in the hit BBC Three series Some Girls, followed by starring roles in Unforgotten, Ripper Street, and Peaky Blinders. He's also one of the funniest comedians I've ever come across on social media. Please watch some of his sketches online!Jassa created the hashtag #BothNotHalf to explore mixed identity in light of his own British-Indian heritage. His TEDx talk on 'How Language Shapes Identity' has clocked up over 170k views and his BBC One documentary Am I English? won an Asian Media Award in 2022.
