Transferred from Grady Hospital in Atlanta after receiving treatment for car crash-related injuries, Elizabeth was admitted to Landmark Hospital with a stable stage 2 sacral ulcer, which quickly escalated to stage 4. The pressure ulcer took a full year to heal, but Elizabeth's activities continue to be limited due to the poor wound care she received. Despite the defense's attempts to blame Landmark's new medical records system, Elizabeth's daughter and even Elizabeth herself for her injuries, a Gwinnett County, Georgia jury returned a verdict of $1,300,000 in damages. Gwinnett County police are investigating a shooting that occurred in unincorporated Stone Mountain, leaving one man dead and another injured. The injured man entered Grady Hospital in Atlanta with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound and claimed to have been involved in a shooting at a home on Mountain Drive. Police responded to the home and found a dead man inside. Detectives are currently investigating the incident and trying to locate any witnesses who may have seen or heard the shooting. The motive and identity of the deceased male are currently unknown. Gwinnett County police are looking for suspects who are accused of trying to steal a catalytic converter from a car in a neighborhood near Duluth last month. Master Police Officer Hideshi Valle said a surveillance camera at the Walmart on Jimmy Carter Boulevard recorded two men purchasing tools on March 2. Two people matching the description of the men at Walmart were then seen with at least two other suspects a few hours later, shortly after midnight, trying to steal a catalytic converter from a 2014 BMW 435i on Saint Andrews Drive. The BMW's owner heard loud drilling noises outside his window and saw three people with tools around his vehicle, according to the police report. A white sedan that was running was next to the BMW as well. The owner grabbed his handgun and fired at least 10 through a window at the suspects. The vehicle began to pull away from the house and two of the suspects who had allegedly been trying to steal the catalytic converter ran after it and got inside it. The third suspect ran toward another house in the neighborhood. The suspects recorded buying tools at Walmart are described as Black men in their early 20s. One of them has a tattoo of a partial clock on the top of his left hand, and was wearing a black hoodie, shorts, socks and sliders on the day the theft occurred. The other suspect has tattoos on his right hand, and was wearing a blue zip-up hoodie, green sweatpants, gray socks and green Nike slides. Gwinnett County police are looking for a man who stole a leaf blower from a Home Depot in the Hamilton Mill area last week. Master Police Officer Hideshi Valle said the man is accused of walking in to the store, which is located at 2120 Hamilton Creek Parkway, on April 20 and put a RYOBI 18V HP Brushless Blower in a shopping cart and then leaving the store with the device without paying for it. Police said the leaf blower is worth $159. A police report states the man allegedly put the leaf blower in a dark blue passenger car before driving away in the vehicle. The report lists the vehicle as possibly being a Nissan, but the model was unknown. The suspect is described as an older White man with a colored tattoo on his left forearm, and who was wearing dark pants, a blue shirt that had the word "DIAMOND" printed on the front, and a brown or camouflage baseball cap at the time of the theft. Officials at the Gwinnett Medical Examiner's Office and private DNA testing laboratory, Othram Inc., are hoping genealogical testing will help them find answers regarding two sets of children's bones that were found in Gwinnett around 25 years ago. The bones were found in boxes at the intersection of Buford Highway and Weaver Way in February 1998. There is no complete set of bones for either child, one of whom is believed to have been an infant and the other is believed to be a teenager. The bones were exhumed legally, according to the letter found with the bones, from somewhere in south Georgia, but where is unknown. Speculation is that the bones were meant to end up somewhere else but fell from a vehicle when driving through Gwinnett. Officials also believe that the children died somewhere between 1900 and 1940 because the bones were found with burial tools from that era. Othram is purpose built to identify either victims or perpetrators in cases with no other leads. Currently Othram is trying to raise money to cover the cost of the testing. Buford racked up a season-high 15 hits Monday for a 10-1 victory over Peachtree Ridge in decisive Game 3 of their first-round series in the Class AAAAAAA state baseball playoffs. Ethan Murray, Brandon Taliaferro, Madden Young and Ayden Lockett led the Wolves' hitters. Murray's home run was his sixth of the season. The output was more than enough for winning pitcher Nate Taylor, who struck out eight and walked one over 6 2/3 innings in a three-hitter. The Wolves advance to host Walton in the second round on April 28 and 29. Wesleyan rallied for an 8-7 victory in walkoff fashion in Game 1, then got a dominant pitching performance from Dominick Scalese in the nightcap for a 3-0 win and a sweep of Hebron Christian in the first round of the Class AAA state baseball playoffs Monday. Scalese struck out 11 in a complete-game, two-hitter in Game 2 to finish off the sweep. Schley Gordy and Forrest Lietz had two hits each in the opener as the Wolves advanced to a second-round matchup at Ringgold on April 29 and May 1. This episode might be best enjoyed on a front porch with some sweet tea. I don't live in the south, but my guest's stories made me feel I was there; creaky doors closing to keep the mosquitos out, and humid air thick with mystery and secrets. I was transported as today's guest told me stories of her life and career.I met Sheryl McCollum at CrimeCon and knew she must come on the show and share about her work. She is currently a crime scene analyst, but got her start volunteering at a rape crisis center at Grady Hospital. Dr. Hany Y. Atallah, Chief Medical Officer at Jackson Memorial Hospital , never wanted to go into administration. The last thing he wanted to do was wear a suit every day. But over time, he recognized the transformational power of being in a position to identify a problem and to bring together the people who can fix it. In his administrative career, he has confronted many problems from massive water leaks inside Grady Hospital that shut down a third of inpatient beds to COVID and the mental fatigue that accompanied civil unrest. Through it all, he has kept one priority in focus: Providing exceptional patient care. We discuss: Making operational adjustments during an internal flood at Grady Hospital How leadership at his hospital managed rising mental fatigue Transitioning from departmental head to a healthcare system head at Jackson Memorial Inherent frustrations that come with healthcare administration To hear this interview and more like it, subscribe to Heroes of Healthcare on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts. Show Notes: The Gift In this episode, Monique shares her another one of her life-altering experiences, encapsulated by the theme: “The gift was a miracle and the bow was a bandage.” Monique met Ruben in the Spring of 2010. There was an immediate spark, and something beyond friendship quickly developed. Of all the things they had in common, the main trait that the couple shared was “a mutual desire for success, happiness, and love.” The story begins as Monique recalls a minor eye surgery she had to have at Grady Hospital, which she tried to conceal from Ruben. That was not about to happen—Ruben was there with her at the follow-up appointment. Monique's embarrassment was highlighted by the fact that the physician did not hold back in saying that she was losing her eyesight at a very rapid pace. She was referred to the Center for the Visually Impaired to “begin training immediately.” In short, Monique and Ruben had just learned, out of left field, that she was going blind. Monique left the hospital crying uncontrollably. She impulsively told Ruben that perhaps it was time to call off their relationship. Calmly, Ruben simply said, “Woman, I already love you. I'm not going nowhere. I got you.” Tears again; but this time, of joy. They were married 18 months after they met, on January 20, 2012. A dream was realized. A few years later, another dream became reality: Monique was able to visit West Africa during a study abroad trip. She regards one particular day of the trip as nothing short of miraculous. The group visited the Akonedi Shrine in Larteh. Once inside, an Akan priestess entered, offered up a prayer, and recounts her journey to becoming a priestess, along with the history of the shrine. Later, as the group took their leave, the priestess gently touched the right side of Monique's face and spoke in her native language of Twi. “I did not understand what she said,” recalls Monique. “But I heard her.” The translator caught her as she exited the shrine, and mentioned that the priestess said, “Speak what you see.” During the rest of the bus ride home, Monique was silent, looking out the window, with tears streaming down her cheeks—impacted, yet unsure of exactly what the priestess meant. One week after returning to Atlanta, Georgia, Monique was to have a cataract removed from her right eye. After the operation, when her bandage was removed, Monique was surprised that she could see. Apparently, she was born with a rare genetic eye disorder called retinitis pigmentosa and, according to her medical team, there seemed to be no explanation to how she was able to see again after a simple cataract removal. Not only could Monique now see with both eyes, but she no longer had glaucoma. “I believe that the Akan priestess, known for performing miracles in that small village in Larteh, blessed my eyes, and for that, I am truly grateful.” https://www.nei.nih.gov/learn-about-eye-health/eye-conditions-and-diseases/retinitis-pigmentosa http://www.mamiwata.com/akua.html --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/monique-monge/message
My guest today is my friend Danielle Render Turmaud. She just finished her master's degree in clinical mental health counseling, and for the past 5 years she has been working with survivors of all kinds of trauma. She has gone to the red light districts of India to work with women and children, for the past year she has been counseling survivors of trauma at Grady Hospital, she will be teaching Psychology classes at Georgia Highlands College in the fall, and she is also a researcher regarding the subjects of trauma and women's studies. Mental health is a big issue these days, and I think the topics that Danielle and I discussed are extremely important because many people view mental health in the wrong light. It's amazing to have people like Danielle who are such strong advocates for people dealing with trauma and mental illness who can help us better understand how to support our fellow men and women who are so often misunderstood. If you want to contact her about counseling you can email her at drtcounseling@gmail.com and you can also find her on facebook as DRT Counseling. I'm sure she would also appreciate a 5 star review on her page, so if you enjoyed this conversation and want to give Danielle some props, go give her page a good review. If you would like to support the podcast, please rate 5 stars and review on iTunes. Music by Calvin Kraakevik
