Plastic in the U.S. is largely going unrecycled, but the city says that’s not so for the plastic we put in the blue bins.
Guest: Richard Warnica, Business feature writer Plastic recycling in Ontario has been called a “green lie.” For instance, Canada produced about 1.9 million tonnes of plastic packaging in 2019, according to a recent report commissioned by the Canada Plastics Pact. Of that, the authors estimate just 12 per cent was sent for recycling. Now, things might be changing. Ontario is modernizing the recycling regime in the province, putting more of the onus on companies to deal with their packaging waste. Along with action from Ottawa, now could be the time where we all get more real about recycling and making it actually work. This episode was produced by Alexis Green, Matthew Hearn and Raju Mudhar.

These are those stories...

GUEST: Joanne St. Godard, Recycling Council of Ontario
Libby Znaimer is joined by Jeff Yurek, Ontario Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, Annette Synowiec, Director of Policy at Toronto Solid Waste Management Services, Keith Brooks, Programs Director at Environmental Defence, and Councillor James Pasternak, Chair of the Infrastructure and Environment Committee. Torontonians have been using blue bins for the last 30 years as a system to dispose of their plastic waste. David Lindsay, special advisor on the management of recycling and plastics, released a report that indicates that 30 percent of that waste ends up in landfills. Now, the blue bin program is set for an overhaul by the Ford government. Ontario Minister of the Environment Jeff Yurek wants to shift the burden from our cities.
How do we resolve the plastic pollution? Jason Young, CEO of the Allan Company based in Southern California, discusses a possible solution with John Sacco. However, the solution involves more than just putting “recyclables” in the blue bin. It requires packaging manufactures to think past the initial shelf life or their products. These issues lead to what we call the Blue Bin Myth: what can and cannot be recycled.
Melanie Zettler, Producer at Global News Toronto, joins John Oakley to discuss (and quiz him) about her new series regarding recycling.
In this episode, Marie talks about how she deals with lunches during the school year. The $2.00 Blue Bin that made everything easier, and how she uses a thermos. She also talks about what she thinks of the "mom police" and what others think you "should" do. Pyrex measuring cup (not an affiliate link)
When a material (like paper) or a container (like a bottle or a can) has served its original purpose and still has useful life remaining, that material will remain in use as ingredients in recycled-content products - if you put it in your recycling bin. He know his recycling stuff. So does Earthworms host Jean Ponzi. This conversation sorts through - literally! - what can and cannot be recycled, and why it's important not to use that Blue Bin as a catch-all for stuff you WISH could continue to be useful, if somebody else does something with it.
