Following the release of General Motors Company's earnings report, CEO Mary Barra outlined the future direction of the automaker during their earnings call. This company's focus, as interpreted from Barra's statement, appears to be a strategic emphasis on electric vehicles and a concurrent pursuit of advanced technology. The recent earnings report gave an insight into GM's sustained prowess deep into the fourth quarter. Moreover, the flourishing pace of the US auto sector is mirrored in the report. Achieving a total SAAR (seasonally adjusted annual rate) of close to 16 million units, GM's incentives overshoot the industry standard. GM's financial prowess is further underscored by robust cash flow and a balanced capital allocation approach that permits the return of surplus cash to its shareholders. However, it's also worth noting that the earnings report also spotlighted a few areas where GM could improve, as acknowledged in the earnings call. One of these is the less than expected output of their electric cars, pinned on hitches experienced in battery module assembly. As a result, electric vehicle margins are reported to be lower than projected. Additionally, the performance of GM's stock price, compared to its historical average, leaves room for improvement. Notably, GM is steering its operations towards the electric vehicles (EVs) and software sector - prime catalysts for revenue growth, market share increase, and profitability. The company, achieving this by the development of the Ultium platform for bespoke EVs and the integration of EV production throughout North America, is emphasized in the report. Looking into the future, GM plans to sharpen its operational efficacy and trim down expenses, as stated in the earnings call. Intent upon executing a $2 billion net fixed cost reduction program by 2024, the automaker is also keen on reducing capital intensity and amplifying product development efficiency. Escalating EV production, enhancing EV margins, and getting ready for growth stratagems at Factory ZERO and Ramos Arizpe are additionally part of the agenda. In tandem, GM has expressed the intention to pivot Cruise, its subsidiary, towards safety and transparency and to curtail spending in 2024. From gasoline powered vehicles to hydrogen cells, the propaganda would tell you that America has a love affair with oil. The reality is that global warming is just a political tool used to further political ideologies that fuel campaigns. There is no global warming there never has been. If there was the government would long ago have banned the use of gasoline in our country, just the way they did and the Edison light bulb. You no longer see gas filled light bulbs in the grocery store, instead you see LEDs that last shorter than any bulb ever did. The reality is they have scammed us into believing backwards science. They have used terminology to make us believe that hydrogen cars are inefficiet. They have dumped electric vehicles onto the public that are disposable after just a few years. Power sells depleted and useless. And somehow we're supposed to believe that 40 years after the first CRX came out at 80 plus MPG on highway, are electric and hybrid vehicles can only get 20 MPG. Somehow we have become less efficient have producing efficient vehicles despite catalytic converters, recycling emissions, and precise computer systems installed in our vehicles. No our fuel injected 21st century vehicles get less MPG than an inefficient carburetor of the 1970s.

Full Electric Vehicles (EVs) and Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) each have their own sets of advantages and disadvantages. Full Electric Vehicle (EV) Pros: 1. "Zero Emissions" - Full EVs produce no tailpipe emissions, making them environmentally friendly. 2 Lower Operating Costs - Electricity is generally cheaper than gasoline, and EVs typically have fewer moving parts than traditional vehicles, resulting in potentially lower maintenance costs. 3. Quiet Operation - EVs are generally quieter than vehicles with internal combustion engines. 4. Instant Torque - Electric motors provide instant torque, which can lead to quick acceleration. 5. Incentives - Many governments offer tax breaks, rebates, and other incentives for purchasing EVs. 6. Reduced Dependence on Oil - Using EVs can reduce a country's dependence on imported oil. Cons: 1. Limited Range -Some EVs have a limited driving range compared to gasoline-powered vehicles, although this is improving with advancements in battery technology. 2. Longer Refueling Time - Charging an EV can take longer than filling up a gas tank. 3. Charging Infrastructure - While growing, the EV charging infrastructure is not as widespread as gasoline stations in many areas. 4. Higher Upfront Cost - Although prices are coming down, EVs can have a higher initial purchase price than traditional vehicles. 5. Battery Degradation - Over time, the capacity of the battery can decrease, reducing the vehicle's range. Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) Pros: 1. Flexibility - PHEVs can run on electricity for short trips and switch to gasoline for longer ones, providing the best of both worlds. 2. Reduced Emissions - While not zero-emission when using gasoline, PHEVs generally emit less than traditional vehicles. 3. Incentives - Like EVs, many governments offer incentives for purchasing PHEVs. 4. Less Range Anxiety - The gasoline engine can act as a backup when the battery is depleted. 5. Charging Infrastructure - While beneficial for PHEVs, it's not as crucial since they can also run on gasoline. Cons: 1. Still Uses Gasoline - PHEVs still rely on gasoline for longer trips, so they aren't entirely free from fossil fuels. 2. Complexity - Having both an electric motor and a gasoline engine can lead to more complex maintenance and potential repairs. 3. Higher Upfront Cost - PHEVs can be more expensive than traditional vehicles and sometimes even more than full EVs due to the dual systems. 4. Limited Electric Range - The electric-only range of PHEVs is typically shorter than that of full EVs. 5. Weight - The combination of a gasoline engine, electric motor, and battery can make PHEVs heavier than traditional vehicles or full EVs. In summary, the choice between a full EV and a PHEV depends on individual needs, driving habits, and priorities. Both options contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, but they come with different considerations.

Countries around the world are racing to achieve targets on the ban of new petrol and diesel cars - but they are hitting stumbling blocks, meaning some are pulling back on their commitments. Although global sales of electric cars are rising, some countries are struggling to persuade drivers to make the switch. Reasons given include insufficient or unsuitable charging points, and the price tag: criticism is often put to governments that the shift to electric cars is hardest for the least well off. In this edition of Business Daily, Rick Kelsey looks at one country which is well ahead of the rest: Norway. The country's aim is that all new car sales in 2025 will be of electric vehicles - a plan being supported by financial incentives and policy changes. He also speaks to business leaders in the car industry, including a man known as "the Godfather of EV", to find out what's needed if countries are to phase out internal combustion engines. Yet alongside these doom loops, somewhat anomalously, something good is happening: the transition away from fossil fuels to clean, carbon-free energy is underway, and it is accelerating every day. That transition has become an enormous, sprawling meta-story. It spans the entire economy, from heavy industry to tech to retail. It's unfolding on every level of government, from local zoning boards to the federal government to international treaties. It involves technology, politics, policy, psychology, even philosophy. It's a lot to track. At Volts, I track it. I follow the news, read the trade publications and research reports, talk to the engineers and policy staffers, and think hard about the larger political and social context. Rather than the broad-and-shallow view offered by most publications, I sift through the flotsam for what matters and then go deep on it. The goal is not quantity of information but quality of understanding. I have been reading, writing, and thinking pretty intensely about this subject matter for over 15 years now. Most recently, from 2015 to 2020, I was with Vox, a news and culture publication for which I still occasionally write. Before that, I was with Grist, a publication focused on environmental news, where I was hired in 2004. Over those 15+ years I've written for other publications (like Outside) and appeared on a variety of TV shows, radio programs, and podcasts, like All In with Chris Hayes and On the Media and Pod Save America and Why Is This Happening? I've been quoted or cited by all kinds of fancy-pants people, from Al Gore to several US senators to pundits like Michelle Goldberg and Paul Krugman and Jon Favreau and Tom Friedman to media analysts like Margaret Sullivan and Jay Rosen to climate writers like Elizabeth Kolbert and Bill McKibben and David Wallace-Wells. As for my pre-professional life, here it is in one paragraph: I grew up in a small town in Tennessee, went to a small liberal arts college in another small town in Tennessee, and then, when I graduated, lit out west. I spent a while in Montana getting an MA in Philosophy (with a minor in snowboarding), then went to work on a PhD at the University of Alberta, in Edmonton (three hours north of Calgary, which is three hours north of the border). Edmonton was too cold and academic philosophy was too bleak, so in 1999 I bailed and lit out to Seattle. After a period of professional drift but personal joy (including a wife and a child), I stumbled into the Grist job by sheer luck in 2004. (I happened to see it the first time I ever visited Craigslist.) Been writing ever since. Now I live in Seattle with my wife, two teens, two dogs, and two cats.  Pete on Tik Tok Pete on YouTube Pete on Twitter Pete On Instagram Pete Personal FB page Stand Up with Pete FB page All things Jon Carroll  Follow and Support Pete Coe
