“Where have you Boyz been? How bout getting back in the studio?” Yes we have been getting asked that regularly as you might expect. Whenever we're together or on our own and moving around the Southside of the city with broad shoulders meeting with folks who follow the Boyz' HAB Podcast, that question inevitably comes up. Well, honestly, we Boyz have just been living and doing our thing. Unfortunately, our thing has not included stops by the Homan Studio for some recording time in quite some time. That is until now. Fortunately, the Homan Studio remains a pretty active place. Other recording artists and projects continue to occupy time in the studio whether or not we Boyz can be found. With hours of raw conversation still in the can from prior recording sessions and now new studio time scheduled; the Boyz have rediscovered that sometimes time away produces delicious experiences that definitely fuel creative conversations. Well that and input from their studio consultant Jack Herer. 60% of the time Jack Herer's input helps every time. So now here comes their latest. rWotD Episode 2567: Lin Clugston Welcome to random Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a random Wikipedia page every day.The random article for Tuesday, 14 May 2024 is Lin Clugston.David Lindsay "Lin" Clugston (5 February 1908 – 27 September 1993) was an Irish amateur cricketer who played in six first-class cricket matches for Warwickshire, three of them in 1928 and the other three in 1946. He was born in Belfast and died in Birmingham. As a cricketer, Clugston was a lower-order left-handed batsman and slow left-arm orthodox spin bowler. He had little success in either of his two forays into first-class cricket: as a batsman, his highest score was just 17 and as a bowler he took only four wickets across six games. He was prominent in Midlands club cricket for many years and played for The Forty Club, which takes cricket into schools, into his 60s. At Edgbaston Cricket Ground, he was for many years to 1988 the "stentorian-voiced" public address announcer: Wisden Cricketers' Almanack noted, in its obituary of him in 1994, that he "would upbraid small boys for the slightest mischief in an echoing basso profundo", and that "his successor is still sometimes called the Cluggie".This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:38 UTC on Tuesday, 14 May 2024.For the full current version of the article, see Lin Clugston on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Danielle Neural.

In this week's podcast, we're talking a whole lot about testicles! Our guest, Professor David Lindsay, shares his passion for the biology of reproduction and optimising ram usage on-farm. David was at the University of Western Australia in the 1960s, a time when the region was experiencing significant land clearance. The Department of Agriculture recognised the need for a lecturer in the reproductive physiology of sheep to address the increasing demand for sheep. He took up the role and sheep numbers quickly rose from a deficit to a surplus in just two years.David shares some best-practice ram management principles, such as focusing on the last 54 days before mating to optimise sperm production. He also explains optimum ram-to-ewe ratios, taking into consideration the age of both animals, their condition and seasonal effects. Reflecting on his career, David emphasises the importance of effective scientific writing, a skill he developed over the years and now teaches to a wide range of industries, astrophysics included! "Nobody knows you're there if you don't write," says David. "However, one of the things I found as I went on publishing this sort of material, was how difficult it was to write," he says. Professor Lindsay believes that writing should aim to inform, not to impress, a principle he has passed on to aspiring scientists.David has a huge wealth of knowledge and we only just scraped the surface. Jared, Oriana and Ned discuss Ned's choice of topic: The Notion Club Papers. Written in 1945 during a creative pause in completing the final third of The Lord of the Rings, The Notion Club Papers found Tolkien on familiar ground, creating a set of purported notes from regular club meetings among a group of Oxford professors much like himself and his fellow members of the famed Inklings. While not advancing beyond a couple of drafts and far from complete, the papers tell first of a professor who, due to a discussion on how spacecraft would work in science fiction, avers he has himself been able to travel in dreams through the reaches of space and meet other minds before returning to earth. One initially skeptical member over time then tells of his own unusual dream experiences, building up to a sudden moment during a massive storm where he invokes the language and imagery of the downfall of Númenor, in much the same fashion as The Lost Road did nearly a decade prior; related manuscripts found Tolkien revisiting the Númenorean story in particular, as well as speaking in detail about his invented language for the society. How does the novel's complicated structure work creatively, if at all, and is there something there that could have been developed further in later drafts? What does it mean that Tolkien seemed most at ease exploring the possible sources of his own creativity in such a second-hand fashion, even if the means by which he did so ended up being incredibly insular? What were the contemporary sources and inspirations for this effort among his fellow Inklings and beyond, and are there any parallels he acknowledges or, perhaps notably, ignores? And who wouldn't want to talk over the evident problems of medieval life while getting a haircut from Norman Keeps?Show Notes.Jared's doodle. This is why it's important to check the insulation on your windows. And indeed the WGA strike did end soon after we recorded our episode. SAG strike still ongoing for the moment!More from the Lord of the Rings musical revival, and who knows where it will go…Amazon's plans for ads for Prime Video, great. Lovely. Couldn't agree with that more. Yup.News about the Tales Of The Shire game and we are very curious indeed!Yeah that whole Warren Beatty Dick Tracy thing. There are indeed skeletons in Stardew Valley. (The upcoming game Ned mentioned is Wytchwood.)The Notion Club Papers! We recommend at least a little caffeine before reading.Knowing a little about the Inklings will not hurt at all when it comes to the Notion Club Papers.Socratic dialogue can indeed be rollicking. Our episode on “A Secret Vice.”Thomas Pynchon is out there and is happy not to be recognized. That Hideous Strength concludes the Space Trilogy by taking a Charles Williams direction (though as Jared notes, not very successfully). If you haven't seen Inspector Morse just ask a relative who still watches PBS a lot. (Because they've likely been watching Endeavour.)Interstellar is trippy, man. (In a formal Nolany way, but still.)The Great Storm of 1987 as reported on UK TV.“The Call of Cthulhu” is probably Lovecraft's most well known story. And boy does it have problems too!C. S. Lewis's “The Dark Tower” is a weirdly fascinating fragment, while An Experiment With Time by J. W. Dunne was a reference point for both Lewis and Tolkien in these works. Ringu aka The Ring, which of course has nothing to do with a certain other ring. We think.Monty Python's Constitutional Peasants, one of their most perfect moments.David Lindsay's A Voyage to Arcturus Tolkien definitely liked. The Worm Ouroboros by E. R. Eddison, rather more mixed. (And relatedly our episode on Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.)The Grink! (RIP Twitter, culturally at least, but Bluesky is starting to gel more.)Per Ned's closing comment, Roger Zelazny's A Night In The Lonesome October has become a seasonal classic of sorts. (And the Gahan Wilson illustrations inside are a delight.)Support By-The-Bywater through our network, Megaphonic, on Patreon and hang out with us in a friendly little Discord!

In episode #171 of the Demystifying Mental Toughness, former Professional Australian Rugby League player and now an inspiring speaker and personal trainer, David Lindsay talks to me about ways you can improve your vitality to improve your chances of success. We also touch on Mental Toughness in a Professional Rugby League as well as discussing the psychological side to martial arts. Key Learning Points: When you are smaller than others learning to play to and improve your strengths is important. “The mental game beats the physical game every day.” You can control yourself not your opponent, so don't waste time focusing too much on them. Mental Toughness in a Rugby League setting is all about your ability to keep moving forwards despite pressures that exist. A bigger picture mentality without too much emotion is necessary to perform at the peak of your powers. To psych yourself up, consider energising music or rituals like the All Blacks “Haka.” Visualisation and self-talk are other useful tools to improve your energy and intensity levels. Ensuring you look after yourself with adequate rest and recovery is essential to raise your vitality. Welcome to this episode of the podcast, focused on personal and professional growth, leadership, and self-improvement. In this episode, we'll hear from a speaker who shares his experiences playing rugby league and arm wrestling, training in martial arts, and now using his platform to help others improve their vitality. We'll explore topics like the difference between leadership and coaching, the importance of constant change and improvement, and the power of celebrating wins, as well as the importance of personal health and fitness for high performance and success. Join us as we dive into strategies for leadership and personal growth in this episode. In the last ten years David has studied many successful teams and individual athletes, from The All Blacks (Rugby Union), to Rafael Nadal (Tennis), Ronda Rousey (MMA, UFC) and many other successful teams and individuals. They all in their own way, follow a similar structure to the "5 Step System Towards Improved Vitality in the Workplace" that David has come up with to improve workplace relations, morale and profitability of your business. David has personally used this System many times to achieve results outsiders said were never possible. Timestamped Overview [00:04:01] David shares his journey from being a small kid who played rugby league, suffered a career-ending injury, got into arm wrestling, broke his arm, became a gym manager and personal trainer but lost movement in his arm, went into martial arts, had professional cage fights and boxing matches, and now is a speaker sharing his message on improving vitality. [00:11:07] Overcoming tough times builds resilience and uncovers one's true character. Talent alone is not enough for success; hard work and training are essential. [00:14:49] Make time for what's important, or make excuses. [00:16:10] Creating positive habits for improved vitality through routines, napping for peak performance, and utilizing systems and strategies. Quality sleep, utilizing the Pomodoro technique, and being healthy and fit also contribute to improved performance. Solutions-oriented mindset is key to overcoming challenges. [00:22:54] The importance of tapping and evolving in martial arts and business, using examples of companies like McDonald's and failed companies like Nokia and Blockbuster. Failing fast, failing forward, and learning from mistakes is crucial for growth and success. [00:30:57] Celebrate wins and losses, effort and dedication. Reward what you want repeated with public recognition. Building a tight-knit team creates a productive environment. [00:36:38] Process of continuous improvement in coaching and sports teams through recap and analyzing what worked and what didn't work. Emphasis on communication and finding solutions to problems, rather than throwing blame. Similar process can be applied in the workplace. Recap is necessary as no one can play the perfect game, and constantly improving is necessary to stay ahead. [00:43:44] The evolution of technology is rapid and those who cling to the old ways will be overtaken quickly. [00:47:07] Leadership and coaching are different, but both important. The speaker emphasizes humility and not forgetting where you come from. [00:50:37] David Lindsay promotes his speaking tour, courses, and content on LinkedIn and TikTok for personal and professional improvement. Contact him via LinkedIn or email for more information. David Lindsay joins Michael Rasile on For the Love of Sports to discuss his career in sports and becoming a professional speaker. David played professional Rugby before a couple of knee injuries forced him to retire from the sport. After a short period of time away from rugby, he was approached by an executive for a professional arm-wrestling league where, even with his short stature, he was able to show his ability in a sport dominated by oversized men. Unfortunately, David broke his arm during one of his matches which forced him to retire again. He once again found himself looking for competition which led him into MMA where he could face athletes his size! After realizing his desire to help others, he found he could accomplish this at a greater scale when speaking. David has created a keynote speaking business where he builds on the lessons he learned through sports to help the audience connect better with his content. https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-lindsay-324899a0/ https://www.davidlindsay.com.au/

A Voyage to Arcturus
David Lindsay joins us on the hot topic of a new elr organization that was announced. We're all good with something like that, but not without input from the shooters.
Listen to this interview of David Lindsay, emeritus professor of the University of Western Australia. We talk about his book Scientific Writing = Thinking in Words (CSIRO Publishing, 2020) and how your hypothesis can save the communication of your research. David Lindsay : "It's quite unfortunate that we're training our undergraduates in science this way. I mean, undergraduates know that when they write something, for example, a protocol to be graded—undergraduates know that their professors are seeking to find out whether the student knows something about the subject. So, as long as there's any semblance at all in the text that the student knows something about the subject, well, then the professor ticks a box and marks the student accordingly. This just encourages undergraduates to dump knowledge, to be writing any sort of rubbish just so long as something substantial-like bubbles out of it that seems to suggest that they have a reasonable understanding of the subject. But when these same undergrads get to the point of writing this way for scientific publication, well, then it all comes crashing down, because they can't just throw information together and hope that reviewers or editors will say, 'Oh, yeah, I think I can see what you mean. You know stuff.'" Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices Support our show by becoming a premium member! https://newbooksnetwork.supportingcast.fm/new-books-network

From there, they founded Phenom Leap Education in order to enable them to have a global, virtual impact on their audience. Now, they're interacting with audiences all over the world. David explains that he and his team help small to mid-level business owners who have hit a wall. He and his team helps to bridge that gap by helping them become better leaders and better versions of themselves. He shares that business owners who are plodding along and spinning their wheels and aren't gaining momentum need to tackle making a bigger impact. Face-to-face coaching was reliant on local business, but the pandemic changed how the world communicates. Specifically, David strives to help middle management with the heat they receive on both ends. Building a robust middle management team is key to bridging some of the gaps with business stagnation. David shares that he sees many leaders losing momentum. As a coach, your role is to always push them to execute their roles optimally. Every link of the chain in a business has to be strong, but it needs to be through legitimate team building. If you bond your team through friendship, studies have shown people feel more community and are willing to work harder with their team, David shares. The smallest level of engagement with your team can add up, and creating a healthy, vibrant company culture can really make a difference. You have to do the work to create a dedicated team like this – your actions need to speak louder than words. Show your team you're dedicated to success by creating strength and healthy habits within yourself. Sometimes, this means taking things one day at a time. If you make a little-by-little effort each day to change your habits, you'll actually be more successful in changing your habits. If you take your time and change a little each day, you'll see the openings you need to excel and become a better leader. There is a mental long game being played here, David explains. You have to have the discipline to keep going with healthy habits. David also shares that staying grounded and present is key. Condition yourself to being present in every moment, for every interaction and decision, and avoid multitasking. Multitasking pulls you away from the moment that matters – the present. Retired agent Charlie Cunningham reviews his investigation of David Lindsay for cocaine trafficking. Lindsay was a highly decorated war hero who had retired from the military after about 21 years in the Marine Corps and the Army. As reflected on Lindsay's DD-214 military record, he had earned over twenty medals of bravery. A pre-trial evaluation determined that, based on his combat missions and time as a POW, he suffered from a severe case of Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome (PTSD). He used this as his defense during a jury trial with a dramatic conclusion. Charles Cunningham served in the FBI for 22 years. Check out episode show notes, photos, and related articles. Remember when we all packed into a hotel convention center in a very busy city to talk about the dental laboratory industry? How crazy were we? :-) Elvis and Barb are back with more conversation they got while at the Argen booth at LMT's Lab Day Chicago 2020. First up we talk to a very well-rounded dental technician that has moved more in 6 months then most move in a lifetime. But all this experience has helped David Lindsay make the decision to become a denturist. He tells his story and shares some insight that he has learned along the way. Then we are joined by the dental product manager from Formlabs, Sam Wainwright. Sam talks about the history of Formlabs, what they are working on now, and what we can expect from this popular 3d printer company. Whip Mix (https://whipmix.com/) is extremely proud to introduce the Whip Mix VeriBuild 3D Printer (https://whipmix.com/products/veribuild-lcd/) with features rarely seen in economically priced printers. Your lab or dental practice can now print extremely precise models and accurate surgical guides with slice thicknesses between 25 – 100 microns. VeriBuild is an open system printer, able to print virtually any 405 nanometer print resin using its advanced software and auto-calibration. With a more-than-adequate build area, automatic (and manual) supports, an advanced slicing algorithm, and Quick Build Preparation, the Whip Mix VeriBuild Printer is the ideal printer for your lab if you are just starting out or want to increase your print production. Special Guests: David Lindsay CDT and Sam Wainwright.
This is an audiobook of A Voyage to Arcturus by David Lindsay, narrated by Mark Nelson. A Voyage to Arcturus is a novel by David Lindsay, published in 1920. It was an influence on C. S. Lewis, for whom it served as an inspiration for the Space Trilogy. Via Lewis, it was also an influence on J. R. R. Tolkien. Apart from them, Clive Barker as referred to A Voyage to Arcturus as a masterpiece, while the philosopher Colin Wilson called it “the greatest novel of the 20th century”. At least some of the praise likely stems from the complexity of the novel. A intricate mix of fantasy, philosophy, and science fiction, A Voyage to Arcturus tackles complex issues such as good, evil, and existence itself. Throughout the story, the main character, Maskull, goes through many different regions on the planet Tormance, a fictional planet that orbits around Arcturus, a star. Maskull is, like many people, searching for the meaning of life. His travels through Tormance introduce him to different belief systems and mind states. As is the case with several classics, A Voyage to Arcturus did not sell particularly well during Lindsay’s own time. Even to get it published, Lindsay had to reduce his work by 15,000 words (which are now thought to be permanently lost). Out of the printing of 1,430 copies, only 596 sold. Through later printings, the book eventually gained in popularity and influence. The institutional history of mathematics in the United States comprises several entangled traditions—military, civil, academic, industrial—each of which merits its own treatment. David Lindsay Roberts, adjunct professor of mathematics at Prince George's Community College, takes a very different approach. His unique book, Republic of Numbers: Unexpected Stories of Mathematical Americans through History(Johns Hopkins University Press, 2019), anchors 20 biographical chapters to a decadal series of events, whose mathematical significance could not often have been anticipated. These short biographies range from the inauguration of military and civil engineering (Sylvanus Thayer) and the textbook industry (Catharine Beecher and Joseph Ray) to the influence of geopolitics during and after the Cold War (Joaquin Basilio Diaz, John F. Nash Jr.), and over the course of the book the subjects witness the professionalization of the research community (Charles H. Davis), radical expansions of educational access (Kelly Miller, Edgar L. Edwards Jr.), and contentious, transgenerational debates over curriculum design (Izaak Wirzsup, Frank B. Allen), among many other themes. Through their professional and institutional connections, the subjects of the chapters form a connected component, providing intriguing narrative hooks across time, geography, and status while evidencing the tightly bound community of American mathematics scholarship. The book can be read as professional history or as a collection of biographical essays, and i expect it to become a charming entry point for mathematical, historical, or not-yet-hooked readers into the forces that have shaped the discipline. Suggested companion work: David E. Zitarelli, A History of Mathematics in the United States and Canada: Volume 1: 1492–1900.
