This week, host Ryan Coonerty talks with Connecticut State Senator Christine Cohen. Cohen is a small business owner turned legislator who previously served on her local school board before running for the state senate following the first election of President Trump. In Hartford, she draws on her experiences as the owner of Cohen's Bagel Company  to guide her leadership on various legislative committees, including the Finance, Revenue, and Bonding Committee and the Environment Committee, and now as the Co-Chair of the Transportation Committee. Her impressive record of legislative success includes leading the passage of the Connecticut Clean Air Act, enacting legislation to prevent wrong-way crashes, and securing funding for mental health crisis intervention programs for law enforcement officers. Ryan and Senator Cohen discuss the misconception that Democrats are “anti--business” and how she's pushed back on this by forwarding a pro-business agenda, including crucial work on paid leave. They also talk about the challenges of working in the state legislature at a time when hyper-partisan rhetoric dominates conversations and distracts from serving the people. Tune in to hear Senator Cohen's advice for policymakers who want to focus on solutions and support small businesses in these uncertain economic times.   IN THIS EPISODE:  • [01:04] Podcast producer, Rachel, introduces this episode where Ryan Coonerty interviews Senator Christine Cohen. • [02:03] Senator Cohen's journey from Cohen's Bagel Co to the state senate. • [05:45] Transferrable skills and areas of focus between small business and local government. • [09:02] How Senator Cohen believes the Democratic Party can better support small business owners. • [11:06] Paid family medical leave and her work on the Environment Committee and the Connecticut Clean Air Act. • [15:02] How Connecticut's transportation policy has been affected by the Trump administration. • [19:40] Her state's leadership is working to reduce harm and the value of a bipartisan approach. • [24:02] Mental health support for vulnerable communities and how Senator Cohen has created an impact. • [28:11] What drives Senator Cohen as she moves forward in government.

Today the Wellington City Council is voting on whether to reduce speeds on 80 per cent of our local roads to 30kph an hour.  Why? I hear you ask.  Well, it's part of their contribution to New Zealand's Road to Zero campaign.  If the vote goes through the plan will go out to Wellingtonians for public consultation.  You see the council is required to introduce safe speed limits of 30kph near 40 per cent of our schools by June next year.  They're then required to introduce safer speed limits all of our schools by the end of 2027.  At first glance that makes sense, but wait, it gets worse.  Because Wellington City has a high density of schools, this would mean reducing speed limits on 80 per cent of our streets in and around Wellington. So 80 per cent of our streets, going down to 30kph.  A few main routes would remain at 40kph an hour, and even fewer at 50.  Overall, up to 93 per cent of our streets could face some kind of speed reductions.  The move is the council's approach to the government's Road to Zero campaign which aims to reduce death by 40 per cent by 2030, and eliminate deaths on our roads by 2050.  You all know how I feel about the Road to Zero campaign, it's simply not possible   Whenever I read that our council is going to consult on something I shake my head. Has anything really ever changed because of public consultation?  Counsellor Iona Pannett is behind lowering the speed limits in Wellington City. Remember though, she's never or owned or even driven a car.  Iona was quoted as saying sometimes slow transport movement is a better way of enjoying life.  Hang on a second, she's meant to be the chairperson of the Wellington City Council's Planning and Environment Committee. Do we have any hope of fair and open discussion?  Think about our traffic conditions now, then imagine what it's going to be like when we reduce the speed to 30kph.  We all want it to be safe around schools, preschools and kindergartens. But 80% of roads in our city?  Come on.  My experience of Wellington City Council is they get everything they want. And it sounds to me like they want this.  So, it's coming to a street by you.  This is no different to the cycleways. One car at a time, gone. That's what they want.  LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Representative Bradley Fritts' legislation dealing with the Dixon Park District is expected to be called for a vote in committee next week.   The legislation is currently in the House Energy and Environment Committee, where the Dixon Republican is receiving bi-partisan support for House Bill 2963.   Years ago, the Dixon Park District and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources made a deal regarding a plot of land in Dixon.  DNR would give the park district the land, contingent on the fact that the land could not be developed.   Now, elected officials and residents of the area have come  up with a purpose for the  property but are restricted from doing so by the old agreement.   So the freshman legislator  has come up with legislation to help out.

GM believed that allowing employees to charge EVs for free while on the job would encourage EV adoption as GM transitions to an all-EV lineup by 2035. But the pandemic escalated and many salaried workers went home to work and have not returned as COVID rages on. Many companies are taking a long-term view that people will return to office sites and  adoption of EVs will grow in future years — therefore the chargers will be used. FLO, which is based in Quebec, started shipping chargers to GM last October. It has shipped 495 Level 2 chargers to date and 18 DC fast chargers to GM's facilities in Detroit, Warren and Flint as well as to GM facilities in other states When GM said it would add 3,500 new electric vehicle charging stations across its facilities by 2025, it had about 918 chargers already installed across various GM campuses in North America. GM's research at the time, which was early 2020, said drivers are "six times more likely to drive an EV" if they can charge it at their workplace. https://eu.freep.com/story/money/cars/general-motors/2022/02/02/gm-keeps-installing-ev-chargers-its-sites-even-workers-stay-remote/9232478002/ LAW WOULD REQUIRE NEW BUILDINGS TO HAVE ELECTRIC VEHICLE CHARGING STATIONS | ADVANTAGENEWS.COM Some home builders say it is too soon to require new Illinois buildings to have designated parking spaces for electronic vehicle (EV) charging. The bill would require newly constructed buildings to set aside a certain number of parking spaces with the capability to meet wiring requirements for electric vehicles. Dean Graven, president of the Home Builders Association of Illinois, told The Center Square that it is too soon to require specific wiring for mandated EV chargers. Graven said. Many different EV manufacturers are producing electric vehicles – all with distinctive charging requirements. At this juncture, mandating that builders install wiring does not make sense, Graven said. “We have no idea how many amps will be needed,” he said. “If we put something in, will it be enough? Will it be too much? They are going to have to have an electrician come back and change everything out again.” The situation reminds Graven of the 1980s, when VHS and Betamax were duking it out to be the dominant video recorder. What will the car market look like in 10 or 15 years, he said? No one knows. Toyota, one of the largest vehicle manufacturers in the world, has said they are prioritizing hydrogen cell technology over electric, Graven said. “Hydrogen is the one element in the universe that there is more of than anything else,” Graven said. “So, could that happen to us? We're all EV, and then in 10 years, hydrogen comes along?” https://www.advantagenews.com/news/law-would-require-new-buildings-to-have-electric-vehicle-charging-stations/article_49475cf6-81d4-11ec-af70-9b85941d4175.html LAW WOULD MAKE PARKING IN EV CHARGING SPOTS A TRAFFIC INFRACTION - GREATER GREATER WASHINGTON https://ggwash.org/view/83673/virginia-law-would-make-parking-in-ev-spots-a-traffic-infraction-for-drivers-of-gas-powered-vehicles ISRAELI BUS OPERATORS MUST BUY ONLY ELECTRIC BUSES BY 2026 - ELECTRIVE.COM https://www.electrive.com/2022/02/02/israeli-bus-operators-must-buy-only-electric-buses-by-2026/ EVS TO POWER KENYA'S BUS RAPID TRANSIT SYSTEM | TECHCRUNCH https://techcrunch.com/2022/02/02/evs-to-power-kenyas-bus-rapid-transit-system/ ELECTRIC VEHICLE OWNERS SAY NEW HAWAII TAX SINGLES THEM OUT | LOCAL | KITV.COM https://www.kitv.com/news/local/electric-vehicle-owners-say-new-hawaii-tax-singles-them-out/article_759f55aa-8400-11ec-a270-2fb0e58019d5.html DETAILS ON LATEST BYD HAN EV LEAKED, RANGE INCREASED TO 715 KM – PANDAILY https://pandaily.com/details-on-latest-byd-han-ev-leaked-range-increased-to-715-km/ THE HYUNDAI IONIQ ELECTRIC HAS THE BEST MOT PASS RATE FOR AN ELECTRIC CAR IN THE UK | CARSCOOPS   https://www.carscoops.com/2022/02/the-hyundai-ioniq-electric-has-the-best-mot-pass-rate-for-an-ev-in-the-uk/ SCANIA TO SUPPLY 5 BATTERY-ELECTRIC VEHICLES AND 1.6 MW OF CHARGING EQUIPMENT https://www.scania.com/group/en/home/newsroom/press-releases/press-release-detail-page.html/4174375-scania-to-supply-5-battery-electric-vehicles-and-1-6-mw-of-charging-equipment-to-swedish-haulier-for ASIAN PETROLHEAD TAKES GENESIS G80 ELECTRIC SEDAN OUT IN THE SNOW https://insideevs.com/news/565051/asian-petrolhead-genesisg80electrified-snow-review/ QUESTION OF THE WEEK WITH EMOBILITYNORWAY.COM I'm taking a break this weekend so won't have the time on Saturday and Sunday to do this, it's back next week. Welcome to a new Patreon Producer GLENN T BJORN RANGE TESTS ORA GOOD CAT WITH REMARKABLE RESULTS - Ora, a sub-brand of Great Wall Motors, is going to start selling its Good Cat model in Europe pretty soon with two battery pack sizes that both provide impressive range. - 62.4 kWh and increases the range to 500 km (310 miles). Bjørn Nyland performed a range test in the latter and while nobody was expecting it to match the NEDC claimed range, it actually performed really well. He drove the vehicle in Thailand in quite warm temperatures and had climate functions off for most of the trip, and he drove exactly 372 km (213 miles) with exactly 90 percent. - Bjørn calculated that had he run a fully-charged battery all the way to empty, the vehicle would have driven around 420 km (261 miles), an impressive result for such a small EV that will most likely never be used for long distance road trips. As of Jan. 1, 2022, low- and moderate-income households are eligible for $5,000 back with the purchase or lease of a new or used battery electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle. Previously, the Charge Ahead Rebate was $2,500. In addition, if the purchase or lease is a new battery electric or plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, then the rebate can be combined with the Standard Rebate for up to $7,500 back. - Prior to 2022, Charge Ahead Rebate recipients had to earn less than 120% of the area median income for their metropolitan area. The new requirements ensure those households who can most benefit from the rebate are eligible. Those unsure of their eligibility can check the Charge Ahead Rebate Income Eligibility Calculator here. In a policy shift, Germany's transport minister has now said that electric cars have won the race in the EU. - While leading auto makers have begun to pivot to electric vehicles, others in the industry, particularly fuel companies and auto part makers, have long argued that synthetic e-fuels can decarbonise ICE vehicles. - Germany's Federal Transport Minister Volker Wissing has thrown cold water on the notion that e-fuels will be plentiful enough to allow ICE cars to meet EU emissions standards. - E-fuels are synthetic energy carriers created in an energy-intensive process and therefore relatively rare and expensive. After the EU Commission had submitted its proposals for this in July 2021, it is now the EU Parliament's turn – and it has apparently demanded stricter interim targets until 2035. - Jan Huitema, the parliamentarian from the Netherlands who is responsible for this area, has now presented his proposals to the Parliament's Environment Committee. The de facto ban on internal combustion engines for new cars from 2035 – officially only cars with CO2 emissions of 0 g/km may be registered then – as demanded by the Commission is to remain, but the interim targets until then are to be further tightened.
