Mark Carney says he'll speed up energy project approvals, honour the duty to consult with First Nations and also hit Canada's climate goals. Eriel Deranger of Indigenous Climate Action worries these promises amount to “doublespeak.” She warns any plans to fast-track projects that impact Indigenous communities could face protest and legal pushback. Keith Brooks of Environmental Defence says the emissions cap and phasing out fossil fuel projects are the path forward.

Just in time for this podcast, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change released another report last week, which was described by UN Secretary-General as "an atlas of human suffering and a damning indictment of failed climate leadership." So what's the current provincial government's record on fighting climate change, and with an election that's now less than three months away? The Provincial government under Premier Doug Ford has been very active on the environmental file, from dismantling the province's clean energy initiatives to MZOs, but is any of that going to matter when it's time to vote? The provincial response to the COVID-19 pandemic will undoubtedly be *the* issue of the 2022 Provincial Election, but that doesn't mean that environmental issues should be ignored. Of course, these issues have been discussed in the media, and among environmental activism groups, not to mention inside the halls of Queen's Park. The Auditor General reported back in November that in two years the Ontario government had only completed six of 22 recommendations to improve climate outcomes, so if you feel like the Ford government is not committed to fighting climate change, you're not alone. This week we're joined by one of the people who's very concerned about that lack of action. Keith Brooks, Programs Director for Environmental Defence, will join us to talk about what grade he's giving the Ford government and whether climate change is going to be a big enough issue in the coming election. He will also talk about the the different topics under the environmental file and where the Ford government is most vulnerable. And finally, he will discuss lessons learned from the pandemic about fighting climate change, and what Environmental Defense will be doing before June 2. So let's talk about the Ontario government's report card on environmental issues in this edition of the Guelph Politicast! To learn more about Environmental Defence and their various programs and advocacy efforts, you can find them online. To learn more about environmental issues, and their bearing on the upcoming provincial election, Guelph Wellington Coalition for Social Justice will be dedicating one of their Informed Democracy town halls to that topic, and it will be on Wednesday April 20. In this episode we look at the not so intense battle between gas-powered SUVs and battery-powered electric vehicles in the fight against global heating. The greenhouse gas emissions from this country's transportation sector are no small matter amounting to about 25% of our total emissions. We pump more carbon out of our vehicle tailpipes per capita than any other country in the world. Listening to Canadian Auto Executive climate pronouncements leaves the impression that they've become climate champions leading the charge to decarbonize passenger vehicle and small truck production in this country and around the world. But their production plans and advertising messages tell a very different story. To help us cut through Auto company climate virtue-signalling and get a clearer picture of what's really going on, I'm joined by Keith Brooks, the Program Director for Environmental Defence, and the publisher of a new report entitled “Car Wars: SUVs vs EVs and the Battle for a Cleaner Future”. Libby Znaimer is joined by Jeff Yurek, Ontario Minister of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, Annette Synowiec, Director of Policy at Toronto Solid Waste Management Services, Keith Brooks, Programs Director at Environmental Defence, and Councillor James Pasternak, Chair of the Infrastructure and Environment Committee. Phil and Keith helped set up the organization Psychologists for a Democratic Society (an offshoot of Students for a Democratic Society), which published a newspaper under the same name. Radical psychology and the politics of mental illness were an important part of social movements in the 1970s and 1980s, and central issues in free education experiments, including Alternate U. In 1970, Keith Brooks ran a course called Towards a Radical Psychology, centered around psychology in the context of the global liberation struggle and the questions of “what is its role and whose side is it on?” Phil Brown ran a course called Demystification of Contemporary Psychology, challenging what he called the “Myth of Mental Illness.” Music: “The Birds & The Bees” by The 2 Bears. Keith Brooks is the man behind Pardon My Norwegian, a site dedicated to "everything cool from Norway from the eyes of a Kentuckian." Prior to "marrying" the Norwegian language, Keith sampled a number of a potential languages in a project called 37 Languages. His "speed dating" or "taste testing" approach to choosing just the right "significant linguistic other" got picked up by PRI's The World in 2009 ("Blogging the Love of Language"), and Keith was asked back again in 2010 to report on which language he finally chose to settle down with ("A Language Speed-Dater Gets Serious").
