The Government says changes to the Accredited Employer Work Visa should make hiring migrants easier, and protect Kiwis in low-skilled jobs. Amendments from March include altering the median wage threshold - and reducing minimum experience requirements for lower-skilled roles. Immigration Minister Erica Stanford says previous settings skewed the market, as low-skilled immigrant workers had to be paid the median wage. "Which is paying them more than the Kiwi standing next to them - and it's caused huge problems for employers, who've got their Kiwi workers living there doing the same job." The Government has introduced new legislation set to limit the amount of full farm to forestry conversions. The rule changes will stop Category 1 to 5 land being converted into forestry - and those with Category 6 land will only be allowed to convert 15,000 hectares. Minister of Agriculture Todd McClay says National had promised voters these changes were coming - and took the full year to make sure they were implemented properly. "We're putting a moratorium in place so there can be no full farm-to-forest conversion, but we are allowing farmers to convert up to 25 percent of their own land to go into the emissions trading scheme, should they wish." Wayne Brown is proposing major reforms to Auckland's council controlled organisations in his draft budget proposal. Brown wants to scrap the council's urban regeneration and property management arm Eke Panuku, and return its functions to the council. Tataki Auckland Unlimited could lose its economic development, events and tourism marketing roles, becoming solely focused on managing stadiums, theatres and other facilities. Brown says he's 'hopeful' Auckland Council will be on board with these changes. "I think that Aucklanders should be in control of Auckland, frankly. And that means I'd like to get a bit less input from Wellington, as well as independent councils." LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The Climate Change Minister believes slashing 24 million carbon credits will fix the struggling Emissions Trading Scheme. Companies buy the credits in quarterly auctions - to offset their pollution output. Repeated failures to sell credits triggered the Climate Change Commission to advise there are too many cheap units available, in order to drive down emissions. Minister Simon Watts says it's a simple supply and demand fix, but he can't speculate on the price implications. "What we've done here today is make sure we've put some credibility back into this market - which hasn't been the case in the past." Changes to unit numbers kick in from 2025. Dom welcomes Tiffany Justice, co-founder of Moms for Liberty, back onto the Dom Giordano Program to tell what her organization is doing to protect children as Biden's changes to Title IX make their way into Pennsylvania public schools. The new changes, which bars ‘discrimination based on gender identity' would create an unfair playing field for biological females, allowing individuals born male to both compete against and use the same locker rooms as those born female. Justice is proud to report that, after multiple lawsuits, Pennsylvania schools that feature parents who are members of her organization will be protected against these changes, protecting young girls and their Title IX and First Amendment rights. Washington, DC, April 19, 2024 — On this month's podcast, the National Association of County and City Health Officials' (NACCHO) Victoria Van de Vate, Director of Government Affairs, and Lauren Mastroberardino, Government Affairs Senior Specialist, spoke about recent changes to the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program and final FY2024 funding amounts for Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies, which include programs and agencies crucial for public health. Sign up here to receive our Congressional Action Alerts. Later in the program (5:14), Emily Winkelstein, Director of Overdose Prevention at NACCHO, and Dr. Michael Kilkenny, Chief Executive of the Cabell-Huntington Health Department in West Virginia and incoming NACCHO President, discussed efforts to advance evidence-based overdose prevention initiatives on a local level, with a focus on communities particularly hard-hit by overdose. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently released its overdose mortality data for 2022 showing that while fatal overdose rates remained somewhat stable between 2021 and 2022, the number of fatal overdoses had claimed the lives of 107,941 peope in 2022. The data also shows that synthetic opioids combined with stimulants, coming from supply contamination, polysubstance use, or both, are drivers in the fourth wave of the overdose crisis. Dr. Kilkenny discussed some of the harm reduction strategies his jurisdiction has implemented, the importance of using a holistic approach to substance use that centers dignity and respect for people who use drugs, and why using data to understand the scope and needs of the communities most impacted will help address the overdose crisis. ### About NACCHO The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) represents the country's over 3,300 local governmental health departments. These city, county, metropolitan, district, and tribal departments work every day to protect and promote health and well-being for all people in their communities.
