The last three years have been quiet for Canada Revenue Agency collections. But that has started to change in 2023 – which is bad news for Canadian borrowers already struggling with inflation and record rate hikes. On today's podcast Scott Terrio and Doug Hoyes breakdown how CERB, CRB, and CEBA loan repayments have impacted Canadians and small business owners, why 2023 is especially concerning for indebted households, and what stronger CRA collections mean if you owe tax debt. They also outline options for dealing with the CRA to avoid a headache. Tune in for an insightful discussion! It's Getting Scarry In Canada: CERB update: Recently, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) has been asking Canadians who received government relief checks from the COVID program ( Canada Emergency Response Benefit ) or CERB to return those checks. If you've received a government relief check from COVID, please be sure to immediately contact the CRA to discuss your situation. Since the COVID program ended in May of this year, many Canadians have received government relief checks in the form of cheques. If you've received a government relief cheque from COVID, please be sure to deposit that cheque into your bank account as soon as possible. If you haven't deposited the check yet, you can use the online deposit service to submit your cheque.
Tom Korski is digging into the lead we got from a caller last week that CRA employees were intentionally leaving loopholes in the CERB application process so that they could exploit it. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Caller 'Jonathan' says he is a CRA collection agent. He called Alex to talk about wage subsidy payments handed out by the federal government during the COVID-19 pandemic. Jonathan says federal workers angry with policies like vaccine mandates decided to take subsidy money they knew they weren't owed. Jonathan says they knew they wouldn't have to pay the money back and it was a way to 'get their pound of flesh' from the Trudeau government. Learn more about your ad choices. PWD - people with disabilities DWP - Disability Without Poverty December 3rd of this year marks 30 years since the United Nations adopted this date as the International Day for Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). The theme for IDPD 2022 is “Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world“. What is Disability Without Poverty (DWP)? What is Bill C-22 (the Canada Disability Benefit)? This week on Outlook we speak with Janet Rodriguez – Disability advocate; Ontario coordinator for DWP about Janet's international perspective (speaking of coming from Peru to Canada) and then what it's been like living here in this country with the push for Bill C-22 as 2022 comes to a close. Janet tells us about this organization and this bill as the three of us have an open discussion about our own, individual experiences with disability and the connection between disability and poverty in Canada specifically, both before and since Covid-19 came along, contributing to so many societal cracks, all of which were already forming before the pandemic but of which have only widened more vastly since. When Covid hit, the government snapped into high gear for Canadians when they were unable to go to work. The Canadian government created the Canadian Emergency Response Benefit or CERB, but with cost-of-living on the increase, those living with disabilities (both visible and invisible) have fallen further and further below the poverty line. This ends up harming society more, in the long run, but with disability there's always been stigma and feelings of being a burden, on the system, in the capitalistic culture we're all living in. We wanted to speak with someone who is doing something, as part of a group of Canadians living with disability, to engage with policy makers and fellow stakeholders to make life better for pwd, a group any one of us could join at any time. “Transformative solutions for inclusive development: the role of innovation in fuelling an accessible and equitable world“. This may be a global truth, but it must begin and end in the country in which we live, and Janet Rodriguez is our guest for this broad strokes discussion broken down. Those of us with disabilities in Canada (PWD/DWP), we must have a highly visible seat at the table for all consultations on the creation of a Canadian Disability Benefit and that's just what Disability Without Poverty and Rodriguez are doing by pulling up a chair for human rights here at home. And as we wrap up 2022, on this first Outlook of December, we promote Disability Without Poverty's webinar taking place Thursday, December 8th beginning at 9 AM PT/12 PM ET. It's a year-End review of the Canada Disability Benefit. Together with hosts Michelle Hewitt, national co-chair) and Rabia Khedr, national director, DWP will be discussing "how far we've come and the challenges that lie ahead in making Bill C-22 a reality.” Register here: https://plan-9.hubspotpagebuilder.com/reg-dwp-year-end-townhall You can also register by phone at: 1-877-775-6652 Read more about what Disability Without Poverty are all about by visiting their website where you can sign up for the DWP newsletter for updates in your inbox: https://www.disabilitywithoutpoverty.ca And find them on Facebook: http://facebook.com/disabilitywithoutpoverty

This week on the show, rabble contributor Doreen Nicoll speaks to Leila Sarangi, national director of Campaign 2000. Campaign 2000 is a network of national, regional and local partner organizations who have come together to increase public awareness of the levels and consequences of child and family poverty in Canada. Each year, the organization releases a national report card, measuring the progress – or lack of progress – of reaching the goal of eliminating poverty. Last month on the site, national politics reporter Stephen Wentzell detailed the government's announcement that it would begin the recovery of Canada Emergency Response Benefits (or, CERB) from recipients that the CRA considers ineligible. In response to this announcement, Campaign 2000 released a statement saying that these clawbacks will have the gravest effect on mothers – in particular, those with multiple children living on an earned income of $33,000 a year. Today, Sarangi joins Nicoll to talk about this statement and also about how poverty is a systemic issue - brought on by colonialism's ongoing legacy in Canada. Solutions to poverty must look at things through a lens of dismantling racist systems in place. The realtor had been forecasting that home prices across Canada would rise 15 per over the course of 2022, led by a 16.5 per cent increase in the GTA. But it now says that it expects prices in the GTA will only be up approximately three per cent by the fourth quarter of 2022. Its Canada-wide forecast calls for the average price of a home to be up about five per cent by the fourth quarter of 2022. Hamilton hospital staff have seen a rise in violence against them since the pandemic started, according to a new poll conducted for the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE). The results of the Postmedia-Léger survey suggest Trudeau faces challenges in his continued electoral success: a majority of Canadian respondents disapprove of Justin Trudeau's performance as prime minister and feel he is a divisive leader, with almost as many hoping he resigns before the next election, according to the new public opinion survey probing the legacy of Canada's leader. Sharing With The Community: A Podcast From The Town of Kiawah Island
In Fall 2019, the Town amended its Comprehensive Plan to prioritize flood mitigation and sea-level rise risks. One of those risks identified was focusing on the other significant natural resource for Kiawah, the salt marsh. Through several community engagement initiatives (maybe a shout out to the Town's Flood Mitigation and Sea Level Rise Sub-committee and the Planning Commission on their efforts toward resiliency planning for Kiawah), the Comprehensive Plan was amended by Town Council to establish a new natural resources goal of formalizing a marsh management plan that explores various methods of protection for the Island's marsh. Both Biohabits and Elko Coastal Consulting collectively have been brought on to assist us with the Marsh Management Plan.Dr. Elko is President of Elko Coastal Consulting based in Folly Beach, SC; Science Director for the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association (ASBPA); an Executive Director of the U.S. Coastal Research Program, and Executive Director of the South Carolina Beach Advocates. She is presently serving as one of the three civilian members of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Coastal Engineering Research Board (CERB) and as a member of NOAA's Hydrographic Services Review Panel (HSRP). Both the CERB and HSRP are Federal Advisory Committees that provide advice to agency leadership on national coastal research and development needs. She served on Governor McMaster's South Carolina Floodwater Commission in 2019. Dr. Elko received her Ph.D. (Geology) from the University of South Florida after working with the USGS Coastal Marine Geology Program, St. Petersburg, and while serving as the coastal coordinator for Pinellas County, FL. She has nearly 25 years of experience in coastal science and management and has assisted with many projects along the U.S. Southeast and Gulf coastsThe Town is asking for the community's input in regard to Kiawah's Marshes. The Canada Emergency Response Benefit was a lifeline to millions in the early days of the pandemic. Then, in early 2021, letters went out to more than 400,000 Canadians informing them that they may not have qualified and might have to pay the money they received back to the Canada Revenue Agency. For folks already struggling to make ends meet, this was a terrifying thought. When you dig into who received those letters, though, something disturbing appears. Certain regions of the country received a disproportionately higher percentage of these frightening letters. Why? Who was targeted? And in general, who may end up owing the government money and what should you do if you receive one of these notices?GUEST: Kelly Geraldine Malone, Canadian Press

We all know that an artist's finances are not like most people's. Of course, this can make things like budgets and taxes more complicated and stressful. And while programs like CERB offered much-needed assistance to so many musicians in Canada, they've also created a lot of questions about taxes. So, for this week's podcast, Canadian Musician Editor-in-Chief Mike Raine is sharing a webinar he hosted in January 2022 with Sondra Gold, a Toronto-based accountant with a wealth of experience working with musicians and businesses in the music industry. While chatting with Mike and taking audience questions, Sondra discusses a wide range of topics related to how musicians can maximize their tax returns (including what they can and can't claim as expenses), avoid unexpected tax bills, and keep their day-to-day finances is healthy shape in order to achieve their music career goals.
Three million people lost their jobs at the beginning of the pandemic. In response, the federal government introduced the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB). The program provided $2,000 a month for up to seven months to people living in Canada that had stopped working because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The government paid out $81.6-billion to almost 9-million people. Two years later, 1.7 million people may have to pay some of that money back. And it's not because of a mistake they made on their application. Erica Alini is a personal finance reporter at the Globe and she tells us why some people are being asked to pay back money, how to figure out if you are one of those people and how this isn't the first time there's been confusion around CERB.

During the pandemic we have seen governments accelerate the delivery of programs through the internet, everything from applying for CERB to signing up for vaccines. Not only were services offered, there were online courts, adjudication, committee of adjustment etc. What are the implications as governments move to more online service delivery? We're joined by Amanda Clarke, Associate Professor at Carleton University School of Public Policy and Administration and Hillary Hartley, Ontario's Chief Digital and Data Officer and Deputy Minister.

What is your responsibility in relation to government relief? When looking at CERB for example, many people who likely didn't need the benefit, applied and received it anyway. Is it your responsibility to not take it if you don't need it? Or was it yours all along, anyway? Graffiti stirring a heated debate Small businesses in Chinatown are upset over graffiti artists who repeatedly get away with vandalizing their businesses, with businesses having to cover cleaning costs. What's the solution? Salmon populations dwindling, but fear-mongering needs to be checked Groups are pointing to seals and sea lions as being responsible for the dwindling salmon stock. They're proposing a cull, which they're re-labelling as a ‘harvest'. Is there science on the other side completely disproving this reason for a cull? Yes. And more in this episode! _____________ NAVIGATE THE PODCAST: Chapter 1 More on that city-wide parking permit that you likely won't be a fan of Today we touch base with City Councillor Melissa De Genova, on concerns raised since we spoke with the city climate manager, Matt Horne. Chapter 2 Why do some feel entitled to break the rules? We've seen many COVIDIOTS, flouting health rules, and acting in entitled ways and essentially not giving a s#%!. What makes people behave this way? Eric takes a look. Chapter 3 Should you apply for benefits you don't need? Is it somewhat of an ethical responsibility to not apply for these government benefits? Or, was it your money to begin with anyway? Chapter 4 A graffiti debate Topics around graffiti have been circulating in the news for the past few days. Businesses are mad that they have to clean up these messes. People on the other side are suggesting this is a fundamental right of expression, essentially. Chapter 5 A seal cull has been proposed, is this even scientific? Chief Roy S Jones Jr who is CEO of Pacific Balance Marine Management, is suggesting a seal cull or what he calls a ‘harvest' is necessary to protect salmon stock. Animal protection groups suggest this is as unscientific an approach as it gets, and would decimate local waters. We hear both sides. Chapter 6 Should sports and entertainment benefit from exemptions on.. anything? The Bachelorette production team has received significant concessions, being allowed to stay up in Jasper Park for 9 weeks! And, it looks like the Japan Olympics are going ahead! _____________ Remember to wash your hands, practice physical distancing, and stay home at all costs if you are sick.
