Sandy Burnett is a Man of Music, especially amphibious in classical waters and jazz streams of consciousness. He is one of the most authoritative classical music broadcasters in the UK, with a huge and impressive CV, which he wears lightly. He is also an outdoor swimmer, Summer and Winter. In this conversation we discuss great rivers like the Thames and the Rhine, the ocean at Aldeburgh, Suffolk, and music that has been inspired by the flow of water. The music in this podcast is Sandy himself, improvising, opening of Sea Interlude III, 'Sunday Morning by the Beach' from Benjamin Britten's opera Peter Grimes (Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Conducted by Sir Colin Davis), opening of Bach Cello Suite I (played by Pieter Whispelwey), and Noe Noe and Vienna Beat, both of Blue Note Sessions. This is an historic landmark in the first quarter of Jake Feinberg's radio career. 79 year old Mickey Roker appeared on my show in a pre-recorded interview that will air 7/2/11. He is one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time. He played with Duke Pearson on all those classic Blue Note Sessions, he was Dizzy's personal drummer throughout the seventies as well as the Pablo sessions. He funked out with Reuben Wilson and Mike Longo and up until it closed was the house drummer at "Ortlieb's" in the old city (Ben Franklin Bridge). As Yaju and I drove to Phoenix listening to the interview I couldn't help but smile as I asked Mickey questions and he would harken back to the bible or his days working on the railroad. Mickey was in a great mood as he had just gotten back from Italy. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

Cities across the country face a shortage of affordable housing, despite a nationwide glut of single-family homes. Accessory dwelling units (ADUs)—often referred to as granny flats or other quaint-sounding names—have emerged as one way to quickly add affordable units to single-family neighborhoods, without tearing down existing homes. Yet, in most cities, they remain illegal to build. And while some cities have re-legalized them, they often put in place so much red tape that few units end up actually getting built. In this episode, we cover: the myriad arguments in favor of building more ADUs some common pushback and reasons why ADU allowances aren’t more common the types of people who would benefit from and/or occupy ADUs how some cities are discouraging the construction of ADUs even when they technically allow them suggestions for what your city can do to enable and encourage residents to build ADUs Want to research this further? John Wilson concludes the current series of the programme where he talks to leading performers and songwriters about the album that made them or changed them. Recorded in front of a live audience at the BBC's iconic Maida Vale Studios. Antonio Vivaldi's 'The Four Seasons' with Nigel Kennedy. Having trained at both the Yehudi Menuhin School of Music and the Juilliard School in New York, Nigel Kennedy has developed into one of the most popular classical musicians of his generation. This in no small part is due to the phenomenal success of his recording of The Four Seasons in 1989. At the time he explained that he set out to use "every kind of technique I know" to communicate his feeling for the music to his listeners. Kennedy's passion for non-classical music has seen him play alongside The Who and Kate Bush, record violin-based versions of songs by The Doors and Jimi Hendrix, and release an album for the jazz label Blue Note Sessions. However, The Four Seasons retains a special place in his repertoire, and in 2015 he released a completely fresh take on Vivaldi's violin concertos. In front of an audience at the BBC Studios in Maida Vale, Nigel Kennedy talks about the album that earned a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the best-selling classical work of all time, and performs exclusive excerpts from the concertos that helped make him famous. Producers: Paul Kobrak.
