What the Riff?!?
1986 - January: Michael McDonald "Sweet Freedom"

What the Riff?!?

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 3, 2024 39:32

We've made a few jokes in past episodes about Michael McDonald popping up in unexpected places.  It's an easy joke to make, because McDonald has a distinctive voice and has worked with a lot of artists covering numerous genres.  But the man is talented - both vocally and on the keyboards - and his career has put him at the forefront of rock music for a long time.Sweet Freedom is a compilation album that explores McDonald's work from his first two albums plus a number of collaborations.  The album title is taken from the track he had recently completed for the motion picture soundtrack “Running Scared,” a buddy cop comedy starring Billy Crystal and Gregory Hines. After a troubled youth, McDonald began his music career in earnest as a vocalist and keyboardist for Steely Dan.  After that he was tapped as keyboardist and vocalist for The Doobie Brothers, a position which would eventually lead to his fronting the band and turning it in a more soulful direction.  In 1982 he started a solo career which would combine a soft rock style with his signature “blue eyed soul” sensibilities.Lynch is examining this “greatest hits” album with an eye towards some of the collaborations that have involved Michael McDonald, many of which are signature anthems and ballads of the early 80's soulful catalog that will eventually become known as yacht rock.We hope you enjoy this weeks podcast! Sweet FreedomRod Temperton, known for his work with Michael Jackson and Quincy Jones, composed this single.  It is a bit of a departure from McDonald's typical style with its upbeat melody and horns.  It went to number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100, and of course became the title track for this compilation album.Yah Mo B ThereThis song is a collaboration with the late James Ingram which peaked at number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100.  Co-written and produced by Quincy Jones and Rod Temperton, the song was originally a more contemporary Christian song with the title "Yahweh Be There."  Ingram suggested the title change, opening up the lyrics to more ambiguity to fit a wider audience. On My OwnA number 1 song from the Billboard charts in the US, this track finds McDonald paired with Patti LaBelle on a breakup duet.  Interestingly, the two recorded their tracks completely separately, and did not actually meet until they performed the song together on The Tonight Show in 1986.I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)This song peaked at number 4, and was McDonald's first success as a solo artist.  It was a cover originally sung by Chuck Jackson in 1962.  McDonald's version features his sister Maureen providing backup vocals, adding familial harmony to the mix. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Main theme to the television game show “Card Sharks”This game show originally ran on NBC from 1978 to 1981, and returned for a second iteration to CBS in 1986. STAFF PICKS:Too Late by AsiaRob leads off the staff picks this week with a track from Asia's third album, “Astra.”  John Wetton returned to the group after a brief separation in late 1983 when he was replaced by Greg Lake for tour dates.  Steve Howe is replaced by Mandy Meyer for this third Asia album.Goodbye by Night RangerBruce brings us the last top 40 hit (to date) by Night Ranger.  Drummer Kelly Keagy takes lead vocals on this Brian Blades-composed power ballad written after losing his brother to a drug overdose.  “It's hard living life on this memory go-round.”Walk Like An Egyptian by The BanglesWayne's staff pick is the best known song by the group.  Songwriter Liam Sternberg took inspiration for this song from a rough trip across the English Channel, when his fellow passengers were walking carefully with their arms outstretched due to the choppy waters.  It would become a number 1 single, and Billboard's number 1 song in 1987.These Dreams by HeartLynch closes out the staff picks with as song that emerged from a collaboration between Bernie Taupin and Martin Page.  Taupin originally envisioned it as a song for Stevie Nicks, but after she turned it down, the song was restructured for Ann and Nancy Wilson of Heart.  Nancy Wilson takes lead on this song dedicated to her friend Sharon Hess, who had lost her battle with leukemia. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Shade Gate by HawkwindThis instrumental appears on Hawkwind's fourteeneth studio album, which was inspired by the works of fantasy novelist Michael Moorcock.

Welcome to Funky Pearls Radio, where today we're celebrating the life and music of Van McCoy, a true maestro of soul, disco, and R and B.  Born Van Allen Clinton McCoy on January 6, 1940, in Washington, D.C., Van's journey into music began early. A child prodigy on the piano and a singer in the Metropolitan Baptist Church choir, Van's love for music was evident from a young age.  By 12, he was already performing in local shows and writing his own material. Together with his brother Norman Jr. and friends, Van formed the doo-wop group the Starlighters in high school.  Their single 'The Birdland' in 1956 marked their entry into professional music, leading to tours and more recordings. However, the group disbanded as members pursued different paths.  Van's musical aspirations continued as he attended Howard University, but he left academia behind to dive fully into the music world. Moving to Philadelphia, he founded Rock'n Records and released his first single 'Mr. DJ' in 1961.  This caught the attention of Scepter Records, where Van became a staff writer and A&R representative.  The '60s saw Van McCoy's rise as a songwriter, crafting hits like 'Stop the Music' for the Shirelles and working with artists like Chuck Jackson.  His collaborations with various labels and artists like Gladys Knight & The Pips and Chris Bartley highlighted his versatility and keen ear for hits. Van's success continued through the '70s.  He wrote for and produced the Stylistics and released his own albums, including the influential 'Soul Improvisations' in 1972.  But it was in 1975 that Van truly made his mark on the music world with the release of 'Disco Baby' and the global smash hit 'The Hustle'. This song not only topped charts but also won a Grammy, cementing Van's place in disco history.  Despite the fame brought by 'The Hustle', Van remained a versatile musician, working across genres and with various artists.  He wrote and produced for David Ruffin, including the hit 'Walk Away from Love', and worked on projects with Aretha Franklin, Linda Clifford, and Stacy Lattisaw. Tragically, Van McCoy's life and meteoric career were cut short when he died of a heart attack on July 6, 1979, just shy of his 40th birthday.  His passing left a void in the music world, but his legacy lives on. With around 700 song copyrights to his name, Van McCoy's influence stretches far and wide, touching countless artists and music lovers.  As we remember Van McCoy on Funky Pearls Radio, we celebrate not just the hits and the fame, but the spirit of a man whose passion for music knew no bounds. From the soulful harmonies of doo-wop to the vibrant beats of disco, Van McCoy was a true innovator, a musical genius whose melodies continue to resonate in our hearts and on dance floors around the world. Two charities are being supported by the duet: SocialWorks, a Chicago-based nonprofit that Chance founded to empower the youth through the arts, education and civic engagement, and Hunger: Not Impossible, a text-based service connecting kids and their families in need with prepaid, nutritious, to-go meals from local restaurants.Dionne was also named Smithsonian Ambassador of Music!!Additionally, Warwick  began a highly anticipated concert residency in Las Vegas on April 4, 2019Scintillating, soothing and sensual best describe the familiar and legendary voice of five-time GRAMMY® Award winning music legend, DIONNE WARWICK, who has become a cornerstone of American pop music and culture. Warwick's career, which currently celebrates over 50 years, has established her as an international music icon and concert act. Over that time, she has earned 75 charted hit songs and sold over 100 million records.Marie Dionne Warwick, an American singer, actress, and television show host who became a United Nations Global Ambassador for the Food and Agriculture Organization and a United States Ambassador of Health. She began singing professionally in 1961 after being discovered by a young songwriting team, Burt Bacharach and Hal David. She had her first hit in 1962 with “Don't Make Me Over.” Less than a decade later, she had released more than 18 consecutive Top 100 singles, including her classic Bacharach/David recordings, “Walk on By,” “Anyone Who Had a Heart,” “Message to Michael,” "Promises Promises,” “A House is Not a Home,” “Alfie,” “Say a Little Prayer,” “This Girl's in Love With You,” “I'll Never Fall in Love Again,” “Reach Out For Me,” and the theme from “Valley of the Dolls. ”Together, Warwick and her songwriting team of Burt Bacharach & Hal David, accumulated more than 30 hit singles, and close to 20 best-selling albums, during their first decade together.Warwick received her first GRAMMY® Award in 1968 for her mega-hit, “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?” and a second GRAMMY® in 1970 for the best-selling album, “I'll Never Fall in Love Again.” She became the first African-American solo female artist of her generation to win the prestigious award for Best Contemporary Female Vocalist Performance. This award was only presented to one other legend, Miss Ella Fitzgerald.Other African-American female recording artists certainly earned their share of crossover pop and R&B hits during the 1960′s, however, Warwick preceded the mainstream success of her musical peers by becoming the first such artist to rack up a dozen consecutive Top 100 hit singles from 1963-1966.Warwick's performance at the Olympia Theater in Paris, during a 1963 concert starring the legendary Marlene Dietrich, skyrocketed her to international stardom. As Warwick established herself as a major force in American contemporary music, she gained popularity among European audiences as well. In 1968, she became the first solo African-American artist among her peers to sing before the Queen of England at a Royal Command Performance. Since then, Warwick has performed before numerous kings, queens, presidents and heads of state.Warwick's recordings of songs such as “A House is not a Home,” “Alfie,” ”Valley of the Dolls,” and “The April Fools,” made her a pioneer as one of the first female artists to popularize classic movie themes.Warwick began singing during her childhood years in East Orange, New Jersey, initially in church. Occasionally, she sang as a soloist and fill-in voice for the renowned Drinkard Singers, a group comprised of her mother Lee, along with her aunts, including Aunt Cissy, Whitney Houston's mom, and her uncles. During her teens, Warwick and her sister Dee Dee started their own gospel group, The Gospelaires.Warwick attended The Hartt College of Music in Hartford, Connecticut, and during that time, began making trips to New York to do regular session work. She sang behind many of the biggest recording stars of the 1960′s including Dinah Washington, Sam Taylor, Brook Benton, Chuck Jackson, and Solomon Burke, among many others. It was at this time that a young composer named Burt Bacharach heard her sing during a session for The Drifters and asked her to sing on demos of some new songs he was writing with his new lyricist Hal David. In 1962, one such demo was presented to Scepter Records, which launched a hit-filled 12 -year association with the label.Known as the artist who “bridged the gap,” Warwick's soulful blend of pop, gospel and R&B music transcended race, culture, and musical boundaries. In 1970, Warwick received her second GRAMMY® Award for the best-selling album, “I'll Never Fall In Love Again,” and began her second decade of hits with Warner Bros. Records. She recorded half a dozen albums, with top producers such as Thom Bell, Holland-Dozier-Holland, Jerry Ragavoy, Steve Barri, and Michael Omartian. In 1974, she hit the top of the charts with “Then Came You,” a million-selling duet with The Spinners. She then teamed up with Isaac Hayes for a highly successful world tour, “A Man and a Woman.”In 1976, Warwick signed with Arista Records, beginning a third decade of hit-making. Arista Records label-mate Barry Manilow produced her first Platinum-selling album, “Dionne,” which included back-to-back hits “I'll Never Love This Way Again,” and “Déjà vu.” Both recordings earned GRAMMY® Awards, making Warwick the first female artist to win the Best Female Pop and Best Female R&B Performance Awards.Warwick's 1982 album, “Heartbreaker,” co-produced by Barry Gibb and the Bee Gees, became an international chart-topper. In 1985, she reunited with composer Burt Bacharach and longtime friends Gladys Knight, Elton John and Stevie Wonder to record the landmark song “That's What Friends Are For,” which became a number one hit record around the world and the first recording dedicated to raising awareness and major funds (over $3 Million) for the AIDS cause in support of AMFAR, which Warwick continues to support.Throughout the 1980′s and 1990′s, Warwick collaborated with many of her musical peers, including Johnny Mathis, Smokey Robinson, Luther Vandross, Jeffrey Osborne, Kashif and Stevie Wonder. Warwick was also host of the hit television music show, “Solid Gold.” In addition, she recorded several theme songs, including “Champagne Wishes & Caviar Dreams,” for the popular television series “Lifestyles of the Rich & Famous,” and “The Love Boat,” for the hit series from Aaron Spelling. In November, 2006 Warwick recorded an album of duets, “My Friends & Me,” for Concord Records, a critically acclaimed Gospel album, “Why We Sing,” for Rhino/Warner Records, and a new jazz album, ”Only Trust Your Heart,” a collection of standards, celebrating the music of legendary composer Sammy Cahn for Sony Red/MPCA Records. Additionally, in September 2008, Warwick added “author” to her list of credits with two best-selling children's books, “Say A Little Prayer,” and “Little Man,” and her first best-selling autobiography, “My Life As I See It” for Simon & Schuster.Always one to give back, Warwick has supported and campaigned for many causes and charities close to her heart, including AIDS, The Starlight Foundation, children's hospitals, world hunger, disaster relief and music education for which she has been recognized and honored and has raised millions of dollars. In 1987, she was appointed the first United States Ambassador of Health by President Ronald Reagan and in 2002, served as Global Ambassador for Health and Ambassador for the United Nations' Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO), and she continues to serve as Ambassador today. In recognition of her accomplishments and support of education, a New Jersey school was named in her honor, the Dionne Warwick Institute for Economics and Entrepreneurship. Warwick was also a key participating artist in the all-star charity single, “We Are the World,” and in 1984, performed at “Live Aid.”Celebrating 50 years in entertainment, and the 25th Anniversary of “That's What Friends Are For,” Warwick hosted and headlined an all-star benefit concert for World Hunger Day in London. In addition, she was honored by AMFAR in a special reunion performance of “That's What Friends are For,” alongside Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder at AMFAR's Anniversary Gala in New York City. Warwick also received the prestigious 2011 Steve Chase Humanitarian Arts & Activism Award by the Desert Aids Project and was recognized for her stellar career by Clive Davis at his legendary Pre-GRAMMY® Party in Los Angeles. Adding to her list of landmark honors, Warwick was a 2013 recipient of the coveted Ellis Island Medal of Honor in New York and was inducted into the 2013 New Jersey Hall of Fame.On March 26, 2012, Warwick was inducted into the GRAMMY® Museum in Los Angeles, where a special 50th Anniversary exhibit was unveiled and a historic program and performance was held in the Clive Davis Theater. Additionally, a panel discussion with Clive Davis and Burt Bacharach was hosted by GRAMMY® Museum Executive Director, Bob Santelli.Commemorating her 50th Anniversary, Warwick released a much-anticipated studio album in 2013, entitled “NOW.” Produced by the legendary Phil Ramone, the anniversary album was nominated for a 2014 GRAMMY® Award for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album. “NOW” featured special never-before-released material written by her longtime friends and musical collaborators, Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Most recently, Warwick released a much anticipated star-studded duets album titled “Feels So Good,” featuring collaborations with some of today's greatest artists including Alicia Keys, Jamie Foxx, Billy Ray Cyrus, Ne-Yo, Gladys Knight, Cee Lo Green, Cyndi Lauper and many more. “Feels So Good” was released through Bright Music Records, Caroline and Capitol.Warwick's pride and joy are her two sons, singer/recording artist David Elliott and award-winning music producer Damon Elliott, and her family. ~ DionneWarwickonLine.com© 2023 Building Abundant Success!!2023 All Rights ReservedJoin Me on ~ iHeart Radio @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBASAudacy:  https://tinyurl.com/BASAud

Sadly, Chuck Jackson passed away at the age of 85 on February 15, 2023, so we are bringing this one out of the archives for all of our listeners to hear on the main feed and appreciate him tackling some of Elvis's greatest hits and knocking them out of the park! Currently, I am the CEO of Domaine Detroit Brands, LLC . Also, I am the Excursion Ambassador and a Wine Ambassador for the House of Pure Vin. I was the wine consultant for Brix Wine & Charcuterie Boutique. I am still working on a magazine that showcases Detroit's growing hospitality choices, while I provide beverage consulting for other projects under development. I specialize in passing on knowledge to others via formal and informal tasting events. To me, wine and spirit education involves discovering what each individual likes or loves about that beverage. Wine/Spirit Education should not be limited to discussions on terroir and the right stemware for the right wine/spirit. While providing knowledge, I am able to expose brands that have not been shown to the demographic that I represent. I want my patrons to drink what they like.” To learn more visit: Linkedin: linkedin.com/in/chuckthewineguy Website: http:/vinopapi.com Twitter: chuckjaxonjr Facebook: Domaine Detroit Brands, LLC About today's Host: Cynthia Chaplin is a VIA certified Italian Wine Ambassador, a professional sommelier with FIS and the WSA, a member of Le Donne del Vino, and a Professor of Italian wine and culture. What a decade. The Sixties. There was, of course, the mainlining of rock that took place, The Beatles, The Stones, Dylan, folk-rock, a rediscovery of tradition and the blues…and then there was something that had been bubbling underneath the pop, gospel, jazz, and rock elements. It would come to be called ‘soul' and the sixties urban explosion out of a post-war northern cities like Chicago and (especially) Detroit, gave us something uniquely American. And the sixties charts were brimming with Motown, funk, cold sweat, and brassy ballads with a back beat and synchronicity of voice that established itself for good. The Isley Brothers, The Four Tops, The Supremes, Chuck Jackson, Mary Wells, The Temptations, The Impressions…the list goes on…all of these acts and hundreds of others staked their claim to the charts, easily competing (if not comfortably sharing) with the British wave and psychedlic sounds that had stormed the gates. Join Dave Stroud for a taste of 60s soul.

It includes collaborations with Kenny Lattimore & Musiq SoulChild along with new versions of her classics & some original classics. She's also touring again Worldwide!! On November 26, 2021, Warwick released the single "Nothing's Impossible" a duet featuring Chance the Rapper. ~ DionneWarwickonLine.com© 2022 Building Abundant Success!!2022 All Rights ReservedJoin Me on ~ iHeart Radio @ https://tinyurl.com/iHeartBASSpot Me on Spotify: https://tinyurl.com/yxuy23baAmazon ~ https://tinyurl.com/AmzBAS

Bachman Turner Overdrive - My Wheels Won't Turn (1977)   Brian Protheroe - Pinball (1975) He had a small role in the 1978 film Superman as a co-pilot of Air Force One. In 1984 he played in the West End musical "Pump Boys and Dinettes" on piano and vocals and percussion.  Cher - Classification 1A (1971) Written by Sonny Bono. Tacky as ever. Especially the end.  Dave Clark Five - Put a Little Love In Your Heart (1969) Dunn & McCashen - Alright In The City (1970) Gary Glitter - Rock And Roll Part 5  (12" extended version) (1987) Produced by Trevor Horn. Wretched. Sometimes you get the feeling I don't like you at all.  O'Kaysions - Love Machine (1968) Their hit was "Girl Watcher". Creepy album cover.  Nat Dove and the Devils - Theme from "Petey Wheatstraw" (1977) I saw this movie a few days ago. Pretty entertaining.  Robey - One Night In Bangkok (1984) While Murray Head's "One Night In Bangkok" was just starting to climb the Billboard Hot 100, Canadian singer and actress (Louise) Robey hit the charts with her own version. It spent three weeks on the Hot 100 in March 1985, peaking at No. 77. Robey's version fared better on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart, peaking at No. 5. Remember when I talked about Kid Creole appearing on this chart repeatedly? Same thing.  Roller Blade Trailer (1986) Sly & The Family Stone - Frisky (1973) The Archies - Bicycles Rollerskates & You (1969) The Checkmates - I Keep Forgetting (1970) "I Keep Forgettin'" is a song originally released by Chuck Jackson, written by Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, and Garfield. This single is often cited as one of the most innovative yet least commercial singles written and produced by Leiber-Stoller. In 1982, Michael McDonald released a song titled "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)". The song's similarity to Jackson's "I Keep Forgettin'" resulted in Leiber and Stoller being given a songwriting credit. The Klowns - Lady Love (1970) The brainchild of songwriter Jeff Barry, The Klowns were formed on the success of the Archies. The band featured actor Barry Bostwick, who portrayed Brad Majors in Rocky Horror Picture Show. Unlike the Archies, the Klowns never achieved heavy chart success with their only Billboard Hot 100 entry, "Lady Love", which peaked at #95.  The Klowns - River Cruisin' (1970)  The Klowns - Honey Bunny Day (1970) Bob Dylan - It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) (Live) (1965)  Bob Dylan - Wigwam (1970) Bob Dylan - You're A Big Girl Now (1975) Donovan - Comin To You (1980) Donovan - A Well-Known Has-Been (1976) Donovan - Dare To Be Different (1977) Donovan - Rock and Roll Souljer (1974) Noosha Fox - More Than Molecules (1980) Noosha Fox - Odd Peculiar Strange (1980) Fox - Dejenina (1977) Nat Dove and the Devils - Theme from "Petey Wheatstraw" (1977) I programmed this song twice. Dur dur.  Procol Harum - A Salty Dog (1969) Wooden Horse - Loving Man (1972) Noosha Fox's folk group before Fox was formed. Sort of like Debbie Harry or Gail Garnett in reverse. I have played Fox's song "S-s-s-single Bed" a few times on my show. I really like it.  Chicago Line - Shimmy Shimmy Ko Ko Bop (1966) Bass player Louis Cennamo played on James Taylor's first album as well as being a member of the original version of the band Renaissance (pre-Annie Haslam). Kill me for knowing that.  Terry Knight - Saint Paul (1969) The Fortunes - Seasons In The Sun (1968) An English harmony beat group. Formed in 1963 in Birmingham, they first came to prominence and international acclaim in 1965, when "You've Got Your Troubles" broke into the US and UK Top 10s. So Terry Jacks' version was a cover of a cover, basically. The original, written by Jacques Brel, was translated (more or less) into English by Rod McKuen in 1964. His lyrics were a little more...adult... Adieu, Francoise, my trusted wife,  Without you, I'd have had a lonely life,  You cheated lots of times, but then,  I forgave you in the end,  Though your lover was my friend,  With your lovers everywhere,  Just be careful, I'll be there...   The Rollers - No Doubt About It (1981) Who does this sound like to you? I hear Toto. The Bay City Rollers, long removed (in '70s rock years) from fame, kept going for a while and released three records under the name The Rollers. They are not as bad as you might think. Sort of a Corporate Rock sound. No heart or soul, but no embarrassing shit, either, and YES, I have heard all three.  The Klowns - Yellow Sunglasses (1970)

Harrison Proffitt and his co-founder Ben Jackson created Bungii, a mobile application that puts a driver and pickup truck at a users fingertips to help people move or haul  items across town like Uber or Lyft does with passengers. Harrison and Ben created the idea and company in college at Kansas State. After an initial fundraising round of $3.5M, Harrison moved around the country to start Bungii in Atlanta, Washington DC, to Baltimore to Miami to Ft. Lauderdale to Chicago to Nashville to Boston and Columbus. Website is bungii.com or search bungii on the App Store.   TRANSCRIPTION:   Joel G: Harrison, thanks for joining me. You have a really cool, interesting, unique company. Just what I love to talk about, in terms of entrepreneurship, and really something different. Tell me about Bungii. It's so practical, yet sometimes we don't think of these things.   Harrison P: Yeah. Well, first of all, thank you so much for having me on your podcast.   Joel G: You're welcome.   Harrison P: It's great to be here. We work in downtown Kansas City. But yeah, so Bungii, I'm willing to bet that you or your audience has been there before and they've needed a pickup truck, but they haven't had one. Now whether you're buying a couch on Craigslist or a mattress from the store or just trying to get those boxes into a storage unit, unfortunately not everything fits into the back of that Toyota Corolla or that Tesla, so that's where we come in.   Harrison P: Bungii is a mobile application. It's an app that puts a pickup truck and a driver right at your fingertips to help you move, haul, and deliver large items across town. We've been compared to other popular ride sharing apps like Uber, like Lyft, but instead of transporting people, we transport people's stuff, if that makes sense.   Joel G: It totally makes sense. It's so practical. I don't even need to help you sell this, but how many people... I have a pickup truck. I may not look like a pickup truck type of guy, I'm not.   Harrison P: Of course you do.   Joel G: No, I don't at all, but I don't know, maybe in the same way that somebody wants a Tesla or somebody wants that cool car, when I first drove a truck, I was like, "Wow, I really like the feeling of this." I have no real reason for it. But those three or four times a year that I need to pick up a piece of furniture at Nebraska Furniture Mart or whatever it is, I'm like, "Nope, I'm not taking the delivery. I'm going to go and I'm going to do this myself." And then how many times friends say, "Hey, would it be possible to borrow your truck?" Well, not everybody has a friend that has that truck or that wants to give them your truck. Everybody has to have a need for this. So my question for you is how did you come up with this idea?   Harrison P: That's a great question. It was actually back in college. My co-founder Ben and I were both Kansas State college grads, and we both owned pickup trucks back in school. If you are a pickup truck owner, you know the problem, you know the feeling of constantly being asked-   Joel G: Just what I said.   Harrison P: ... from friends and family, "Hey, can I borrow you and your truck?" It's pretty much in the job description of owning a pickup truck. You're going to be helping friends and family, whether you like it or not. It really all came to a boiling one day when, again, my co founder Ben Jackson, he was asked by four different people in one day, "Can I borrow you and your truck?" Ben's a nice guy, but he obviously got pretty frustrated after that fourth ask, so he thought to himself, "There's got to be a better way to do this." So the next day in our class, we were in an advanced sales class at Kansas state. He kind of touched me on the shoulder. I happened to sit right in front of him, which is interesting because we really didn't know each other that well at the time, which is kind of a story in itself.   Joel G: So he's from where?   Harrison P: He is from Atlanta, but he actually grew up in Budapest, Hungary.   Joel G: Wow.   Harrison P: And I'm from Denver, Colorado. So it's very interesting that we both met at Kansas State.   Joel G: Yeah.   Harrison P: Both of our parents, all of our parents are K Staters. So we're going to have that purple blood. But anyway, so yeah, he taps me the shoulder in class and I kind of lean back and I'm listening to what he's saying and this idea... And I honestly don't know what came over me. I kind of blacked out in the moment, but I said,"Man that's amazing, let's start a business." So right there and then we kind of walked out of class that day with one thing in mind, and that's tap a button, get a truck.   Joel G: I guess two part question here. One, what were you thinking about in terms of your future before that blackout conversation and two, was there a background that enabled you or Ben to have that confidence to say, "Well we could do this?"   Harrison: Yeah, I don't think either of us had imagined this or plans to be entrepreneurs or start a company. I mean myself, I had an interesting backstory. I was a biology, premed student in college and I was going to go to the medical route, go to med school, take the MCAT, all that good stuff. Cardiovascular surgeon was my goal, so setting the bar high there. I ended up not wanting to do that, go down that path. Ended up getting my biology degree, getting a business degree and thinking medical device sales is my routes. And then, you know, literally this just kind of fell into my lap and Ben came to me, just a, I want to say God moment. It kind of happened and all of that. And yeah, I mean that's where we started. There was really no forethought in starting a business or really finding a need and fixing it. It just, it came upon us. But we, we went full, we bought fully into it.   Joel G: There's so much here in terms of the spirit of entrepreneurship and you know, I think entrepreneurship is, it's different for everyone. There's no specific path. You know, I was telling you that I consider myself an entrepreneur now with my speaking business and I don't have a business background at all, and you know, been a broadcaster for 25 years. So I came onto it at about 44 years old when I found something I was passionate about. And I think that is one of the keys, certainly of entrepreneurship or maybe even everything in life, is when you have a passion for something. But the paths are all different. But tell me about the early moments, those early times, how you set it all up and what you went through.   Harrison P: Yeah, so the moments following that conversation in the classroom, it was very, there were very grandiose thoughts. You know, let's go raise money, let's go build an app, let's go be millionaires tomorrow. And man, we were ignorant at the time. And if we went that route, I think we would've been hitting our head against the wall for months, if not years. We probably wouldn't have made it to where we are now. But very thankfully, we had advisors and mentors in place at Kansas State in the entrepreneurial department. Shout out Chuck Jackson and Dave Drawling out there in K State, but they said, "Hey guys, hit the brakes here. You know, you guys need to go prove this idea, validate it, make sure it's a valid idea before you go do all this other things, raise money and build this capital." So instead of going and doing that, we went and put our trucks on Facebook and Craigslist in Manhattan - town of 50,000 people. And over the three months, summer of 2015, we said, "Hey, we're a couple of guys in the community, we're willing to move whatever, whenever just text this number to Harrison, email us, let us know, and we're on the way. And here's the basic pricing model." And so in that three-month time we did over 350 deliveries ourselves. So a very sweaty summer, to put it lightly. But the great thing about it is we documented all the data, so we had everything from demographics, what time these deliveries were happening, what we were moving, even to the demographics of people that were moving for. And so from there we're able to translate that to Kansas City and say, "All right, we did these many deliveries in three-month time period and this population and if we translate over to Kansas City for the whole year, that's profitable." And that's when we're starting to do pitches to investors on a weekly basis, and that we were able to lock down some initial funding.   Joel G: So how long did it take until you had that initial funding?   Harrison P:: After the summer of 2015 I believe that was eight months later.   Joel G: Wow. How tough was it to sell investors and then, you know, customers to this day on that because this is something that everyone understands?   Harrison P: So the tough thing about when we first launched in Kansas City, we launched to crickets. We thought... We'd put this app out, we thought this thing's just going to take off. And so we really had to put our heads down and figure out how to get in front of the customer because we knew there was a need. We proved in Manhattan, but now we had to get the word out. And so instead of just, you know, waving the white flag and, you know, walking away at that time when we opened the app and nothing happened, we, we got work and we roll up our sleeves and we were down at the West Bottoms Kansas City, talking to people buying antiques. We were setting up at furniture events in Kansas City, just letting people know the service. And sure enough, the next week we had two deliveries.   Joel G: So you're knocking on doors essentially.   Harrison P: You got it. You got to first, you got to get the word out.   Joel G It's amazing what happens. This is the very simple message when you put yourself ahead of the pack.   Harrison P: Yeah.   Joel G: How do you put yourself ahead of the pack? You take that extra step, you meet face to face, you do the things that everybody should be doing, but either doesn't know how to do, too lazy to do. I don't think it's rocket science. Now maybe the website and the app and all of that a little bit different, too. But what were you finding with that face-to-face in the West Bottoms by the antique stores?   Harrison P: So on top of doing the moves ourselves back in Manhattan, being able to talk to consumers and customers face-to-face, that gives you the root need that you're solving and that the core issue that you're solving. And so I truly believe that if you don't talk to these customers face to face, if you're not solving the solution, or solving the problem yourself, then you're going to be building something that's not really fixing that initial problem. So that was able to teach us everything from making sure we're charging customers on a permanent basis because the drivers are going to get taken advantage of, to making sure we... the app is extremely simple, it's got to be something that is relatable to the consumer. That's why if you look at our app, it's going to be a very similar Uber or Lyft feel because that's what we're known, that's what everyone is conditioned to use these days.   Harrison P: So definitely listen to your customers right off the bat is, it's vital to becoming successful down the road. Joel G: Well, you said something interesting to me, too, backing up a little bit, but you talked about in that first summer of 2015 collecting data. It's one thing just to go out there and offer this and see if people like it, but you guys weren't sleeping on it either. I mean, you could've said, "Hey, yeah, people were interested, let's give it a try," but yet you took all of that, you mine that data and you were able to help craft what you were doing. Tell me about how you did that, and you know, I don't know if that came straight from what you learned in school or, or what it was, but you guys really were able to leverage that summer.   Harrison P: Right. I'm... When you're going to... We knew that when you're going, we're going to go to investors you had to have objective data to prove that this is going to be valid. So we couldn't come to a, get into a room full of these independently wealthy individuals and say, "It worked and, you know, we're excited for the future. You have to be able to show them from a numbers standpoint. So especially new investor, or new entrepreneurs, you got to know that upfront, be objective about everything you do. Cause if you can't prove it, or you can't test it and measure it, then it's not worth doing.   Joel G: So you get there, you get some of that initial funding, you get rolling in Kansas City, but now you're well beyond Kansas City. What was the tipping point when you said, "Ah-ha, we've got this or we've got something really special here," one. And two, where have you experimented?   Harrison P: The tipping point, I would say for me, is when I started to see my friends and family use it that I hadn't spoken to about, or it was, you know, through the grapevine, and through the grapevine starting to see friends of friends use it and then come back, those friends come back and telling me that was exciting to me where it was, it was personal. Okay, this is starting to get out there. Also, I had a great experience with my mother. She went to her hairdresser and she was talking to the hairdresser and the hairdresser knows about Bungii cause they talk, and the hairdresser was with a different client the day before and she said, they were talking about moving, and she had some things to move to a storage unit, and the hairdresser asked her, you know, "What, what are you going to do?" And the lady said, "I'm just going to Bungii it."   Harrison P: Going to Bungii it, she used a verb!   Joel G: You became a verb.   Harrison P: That was it! That was my... That was... I loved it. I was my tipping point and that got me really excited. But from there, so after we really prove it in Kansas City, we started seeing that growth. It was time to raise more money and prove that we could launch this in other cities across the country. So we went and set out and we raised our first round of funding of over three and a half million to get this out to other markets. And that's what I set off on the road to prove that we could launch it and other markets across the country. So I moved to back in late 2017 and spent eight months in Atlanta living in a basement, learning how to launch the business, and then it just accelerated from there. Once we got Atlanta figured out, then it was, it was Washington, D.C. And then from D.C., Baltimore, Baltimore, Miami, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Chicago, Nashville, Boston, now Columbus. So we're we're growing, and growing pretty quick.   Joel G: And how many of those cities were you living in, or was it just Atlanta?   Harrison P: Over the past two-and-a-half years I've lived in all nine cities.   Joel G: Oh my gosh.   Harrison P: It's been fun. I think it's 26 Airbnbs I've been in, total.   Joel G: So some short term living, but you're at the age, you're single or you're not married. No kids, not married. 27 years old is the right time to do it. If you're ever going to do it, you delve into all of these cities... Were they all different, or were you able to follow a formula?   Harrison P: They're all absolutely different in their own way, all very unique. For instance, with Kansas city, I don't know if it's just because of where we're kind of hometown guys here or there was buzz about it when we started, but we had drivers lining up. I think we have, we had a list of over 200 drivers ready to start driving with us when we initially released the app, so we assumed that that would never be a problem. And then we moved to Atlanta and we, we opened the app, we had, we knew how to get demand, we focused so much on that customer acquisition, and making that as optimized and efficient as possible, then we opened it up the app in Atlanta, we figured out we had no drivers. So that was also a new issue that we had to figure out, that I'd figure out in Atlanta, was the driver acquisition part of it, the whole other side of the equation. Because they're, end of the day, drivers are our customers too.   Harrison P: We tried multiple different avenues on that, and what we found out was that first responders are a huge part of our driver base. So what I, what I do, the launch team now is we, when we first go into markets, outside of preparing these businesses and getting demand ready, it's talking to firefighters and police officers and paramedics because of their perk schedules, whether they usually work in 24 hours and 48 hours off, a lot of these guys have trucks and they're just, you know, very helpful people in the community. Bungii is a great fit for them because it's an easy job to do that doesn't require too much mental work. It's just you sign onto an app, you get deliveries, you make great cash on the side. So-   Joel G: And are they doing the lifting too, or no?   Harrison P: Correct, they do. So Bungii drivers do help customers load, but if it's a Bungii solo, so it's one guy, one truck, and the item is too big we do ask our customers to help or provide help, and that hasn't been an issue because of the great price point the customers are getting, they're more than willing to help themselves or have their husband or son or neighbor, whoever it is help. But we do have a Bungii duo option, so if, if the customer is not able to help whatsoever, they can get two guys and two drivers.   Joel G: All right, let's talk about how it works, and bungii.com. B-U-N-G-I-I, so two I's there, B-U-N-G-I-I dot com, and I would imagine they could find the app pretty simply by searching Bungii.   Harrison P: Yep, free app on the app store, Google Play. If you go to our website there's a "download the app" button right on the main page.   Joel G: Okay, so that part's easy. And you can go on the website, too, and look at all the frequently asked questions and everything that you would want. But let's explain to everybody listening right now. I know it's fairly simple how this works.   Harrison P: Yeah. So I mean it always comes back to, think of what your, you've used before, Uber or Lyft, you're going to open up our app, you're going to put in your pickup and drop-off location for the item. You're going to take a picture of the item that you're moving, and then you request it, whether it's on demand or later in the day, you can schedule it. Bungii... Typically on average, a Bungii driver can arrive within 15 minutes of your location. So our goal when we initially built the app was someone's shopping at Costco or Ikea, they find that item that they weren't expecting to buy, that large TV, or that couch, or patio set, and say, "I want to get this home today." And if they use Bungii, by the time they're checking out, there's a Bungii driver waiting outside, ready to go.   Joel G: And, and that works out really well, too, cause they're not hopping in the truck. So you go to Costco and you buy that big piece of furniture. Bungii driver shows up, he takes it to your house, follows you over to your house, or you're following him, whatever. And unloads and that's it.   Harrison P: What we're seeing is customers love the ability to schedule. So I'm at Costco, I know I've got to run over to Target, and I've got some other errands, I've got to see a friend, won't get home until six o'clock, I'm going to schedule my Bungii til, for at six o'clock so by the time I'm home from all my errands, there's my Bungii driver arriving with my patio set. And so we're working with these businesses now, like Costco, to prepare those items, help our drivers load it. And so the customer is really hands-off and it's extremely convenient for that customer.   Joel G: Okay. Let's get to my baseball-themed questions. First question regarding Bungii, and you guys are still relatively new, and young, you and Ben and the company. Biggest home run you've hit so far.   Harrison P: So many things I'm grateful for, and I think home runs we've hit, but one of the biggest ones I would say for us, from my standpoint, we've recently partnered with Mattress Firm on a regional scale. We're growing with them, so being able to offer customers who've just purchased that mattress, same-day delivery at a cheaper price than ever. That's been pretty exciting for me and that's been more of a recent win. Also, I think overall it's all about the customer and so, are you familiar with NPS score?   Joel G: Yeah.   Harrison P: A net promoter score, those out there who don't know, a net promoter score measures the willingness of your customers to refer your service or product to their friends and family, and it brings us from negative 100 to 100, a hundred being the best, obviously. And with the moving industry, whether it's full-house moving or small moving, the average is about 13 and so we're extremely proud to have a net promoter score of an 87 after close to hitting over almost a hundred thousand deliveries at this point. Having an 87 just speaks to our folks on the consumer, our driver recruitment tactics, and how we set up preventative measures are making sure everyone's having a great experience with our drivers, and then our customer service. So having an 87 is something that we're extremely proud of to this day, and I think that's probably our biggest win overall.   Joel G: What's the biggest swing and miss you've taken, and what have you learned from it?   Harrison P: So I'm really focused on launches these days and expanding a Bungii engine to different markets across the, across the country. And one of the most recent launches we had was Chicago and we really hadn't figured out completely that driver acquisition part of it, or being a little bit more strategic about launching. So with Chicago we walked in and we did what we had been conditioned to do before. Get in there, start finding drivers, start finding demand. Once we launched the app in Chicago, and at that point we realized that there are no pickup trucks in Chicago whatsoever. So we started having this demand coming out, but we had no one picking up those deliveries so that the deliveries were failing. And that's a problem. And so these consumers, these business, were saying, "Hey, we're not trusting the service, we're not going to use it."   Harrison P: So we're over there scrambling to get drivers, and finally we get drivers off the ground, but now these businesses have lost their trust. So now we have all these drivers, but no trips are coming in, and saying, "Hey, what's going on here? There's no deliveries. Why did I sign up for this?" Now they're falling off and they're, they're not converting. So it's all about balance with launches, and the launches are very essential to growing correctly and efficiently. So now after Chicago we took a step back and figured out this has to be more strategic, we have to figure out how to set these drivers and this demand up beforehand so by the time we do launch it's just a turn-key solution. And the demand and [inaudible 00:19:21] start getting connected immediately and then at that time, once we get to a certain threshold of trips and drivers, it begins to grow organically. And that's the, that's probably the biggest learning from the Chicago launch was we have to do things prior to the launch and get things set up beforehand.   Joel G: All right, last baseball-themed questions, small ball. What are the little things that add up to the big things for Bungii?   Harrison P: Small ball? You know, I'll probably say one of the biggest, I guess cuts I've taken, small cuts and taken recently is probably not pivoting, but putting more of a focus on the retailers and the businesses out there. So we were a very strong consumer-based demand company, but now we've started partnering with these companies like Mattress Firm, and Costco, and World Market, and Big Lots, and we're realizing that these businesses are trying to combat the Googles and Amazons of the world of this, for the same-day or next day delivery and we're kind of becoming that answer for them. And so with the folks on businesses, I think that's going to allow us to scale and scale faster as we walk into a new market with partnerships with six, ten different national retailers, that's going to have newly kicked demand off. We've got drivers, that job recruitment side figured out, so it should kind of make everything a little bit more efficient.   Joel G: Four final questions. You don't know what these are as we round the bases. First one, it's only natural, you've heard this one I'm sure many times throughout your life that with the last name of Proffitt, you add an extra F in there that's fine-   Harrison P: Two F's, two T's.   Joel G: Two F's, two T's, right, right, right. How often have you heard that? And now here you are trying to do exactly that.   Harrison P: Every business person I've met has made a comment on that, so-   Joel G: I knew I wasn't original.   Harrison P: So whether it's been, I mean I've had people tell me you'd be perfect for it as a doctor, you'd be perfect as a dentist and be perfect as entrepreneur. I had someone tell me to be perfect as a porn star with that kind of name. I was like, oh gosh, like I'm all over the place.   Joel G: Well I guess in the end it's a reminder whatever the industry clean or dirty that people want to make money. Right?   Harrison P: Exactly.   Joel G: All right, so you got that going for you. That's the first question, that was the softball and kind of the unique one. Second one. I'm looking at the frequently asked questions and one of them is there, is there anything Bungii will not pick up? And I like the response here, "Our drivers are strong but they're not super men. We focus on items that you and your driver can lift together and put in the back of a truck. In addition, we do not allow the transportation or anything hazardous, illegal or breathing." So as a, "Believe it or not, some people don't understand that. See the most absurd move requests here." That was going to be my question. Instead of clicking on it, what is the most absurd move requests you've had?   Harrison P: Well, first of all, it'd be better asked to our customer service team because they're dealing with that every day. But once I've, I've heard of that have happened, we moved buckets of animal waste from the Miami Zoo down in Miami to fertilize plants. So I remember seeing that happen and looking at our backend system and seeing these buckets of crap and it was connected to a driver, the driver was heading that way and we reached out to the driver, said, "Hey Jim, do you know, you know what you're going to pick up? And he said, 'Buckets of crap! I'm so excited!' He was pumped about it! And so he did that.   Joel G: He loves his job.   Harrison P: Yeah. I mean, I know we had a customer who-   Joel G: Is that, is that allowed, to move buckets of crap? It's not really hazardous.   Harrison P: Yeah! It's not hazardous-   Joel G: Not alive-   Harrison P: It's not breathing, just fertilizer.   Joel G: Okay, sure.   Harrison P: We did have someone also move a box that we later learned had a snake in it. So that's, that's something we try to avoid.   Joel G: Third question for you and I love asking this one. Oh, let me just preface it by saying, I mean you and, you and Ben start this thing. Where are you at now in terms of employees?   Harrison P: We have 25 employees now and that includes, we have people in each of our markets now that we're running these businesses and continue to grow our markets. We have a launch team, a development team, marketing team, customer service team, driver recruitment team, and driver management team. So yeah, from two guys in a dorm room to get to the point we are today, it's, it's pretty exciting to see.   Joel G: In a pretty quick amount of time too. So my question, the third question is, as we round the bases to that is where can this go?   Harrison P: So we just finished our recent series A of 9.4 million to get this really across the country. So with that money, that's going to inject fuel into a national expansion and launch. So the goal by 2021 is to be in every major city in America. And so that's really my focus is launching faster and more efficiently every time. So next year we're looking at 12 to 15 cities. Now the year after that should be another 15 to 25 cities. So the goal, national expansion. My personal goal is to make Bungii a household name down the road, so when you think pickup truck, you're thinking Bungii. But on top of that, we just want to not only be a consumer service, but we're going to start plugging into the supply chain, reverse logistics, store transfers, and basically the internal logistics of businesses as our goal.   Joel G: Final question. It's a little bit similar to that one, but my walk off question, I've always thought that entrepreneurs are always thinking about what's the next thing. Now, I'm not trying to force you out of Bungii, but it sounds like you've got plenty going on, but is there anything in the back of your head where you're thinking whether it's one day, an exit plan or just something else because you guys have solved the problem.   Harrison P: Yeah.   Joel G: And you had that ah-ha moment in class, that blackout moment that you described. Do you envision moving into other things at some point?   Harrison P: From a Bungii standpoint, selfishly, I think we want to grow this as big as we can get it ourselves. Realistically, I think there will be some sort of acquisition or a roll up down the road where we get acquired by, whether it's an Uber or Lyft or maybe some sort of strategic partner like a U-Haul or Home Depot. But I think that's the reality of it is we will be acquired at one point so we're really preparing ourselves for that. After Bungii, I honestly have not even put any thought into it. It's been 100% gas on Bungii and haven't looked back at all. So no, it'll be an interesting step back once I move on from Bungii, whenever that is, if that ever comes. But I'm very optimistic. I've learned so much from Bungii, already at 27 I'm very positive. I have a very positive outlook on the future.   Joel G: It's really exciting. You guys have done incredible things in a very short amount of time, and I think done at the right way from everything you're talking about and I know a lot more to come. So Harrison, thanks so much for spending time. Again, people can can find you guys at bungii.com, or they can search Bungii, B-U-N-G-I-I. Congratulations. Thanks for doing it, Harrison.   Harrison P: Thanks so much for your time, Joel, appreciate it.

Cities across the country face a shortage of affordable housing, despite a nationwide glut of single-family homes. Accessory dwelling units (ADUs)—often referred to as granny flats or other quaint-sounding names—have emerged as one way to quickly add affordable units to single-family neighborhoods, without tearing down existing homes. Yet, in most cities, they remain illegal to build. And while some cities have re-legalized them, they often put in place so much red tape that few units end up actually getting built. In this episode, we cover: the myriad arguments in favor of building more ADUs some common pushback and reasons why ADU allowances aren’t more common the types of people who would benefit from and/or occupy ADUs how some cities are discouraging the construction of ADUs even when they technically allow them suggestions for what your city can do to enable and encourage residents to build ADUs Want to research this further? Warwick’s career, which currently celebrates over 50 years, has established her as an international music icon and concert act. Over that time, she has earned 75 charted hit songs and sold over 100 million records. Marie Dionne Warwick, an American singer, actress, and television show host who became a United Nations Global Ambassador for the Food and Agriculture Organization and a United States Ambassador of Health. She began singing professionally in 1961 after being discovered by a young songwriting team, Burt Bacharach and Hal David. She had her first hit in 1962 with “Don’t Make Me Over.” Less than a decade later, she had released more than 18 consecutive Top 100 singles, including her classic Bacharach/David recordings, “Walk on By,” “Anyone Who Had a Heart,” “Message to Michael,” "Promises Promises,” “A House is Not a Home,” “Alfie,” “Say a Little Prayer,” “This Girl’s in Love With You,” “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again,” “Reach Out For Me,” and the theme from “Valley of the Dolls. ”Together, Warwick and her songwriting team of Burt Bacharach & Hal David, accumulated more than 30 hit singles, and close to 20 best-selling albums, during their first decade together. Warwick received her first GRAMMY® Award in 1968 for her mega-hit, “Do You Know the Way to San Jose?” and a second GRAMMY® in 1970 for the best-selling album, “I’ll Never Fall in Love Again.” She became the first African-American solo female artist of her generation to win the prestigious award for Best Contemporary Female Vocalist Performance. This award was only presented to one other legend, Miss Ella Fitzgerald. Other African-American female recording artists certainly earned their share of crossover pop and R&B hits during the 1960′s, however, Warwick preceded the mainstream success of her musical peers by becoming the first such artist to rack up a dozen consecutive Top 100 hit singles from 1963-1966. Warwick’s performance at the Olympia Theater in Paris, during a 1963 concert starring the legendary Marlene Dietrich, skyrocketed her to international stardom. As Warwick established herself as a major force in American contemporary music, she gained popularity among European audiences as well. In 1968, she became the first solo African-American artist among her peers to sing before the Queen of England at a Royal Command Performance. Since then, Warwick has performed before numerous kings, queens, presidents and heads of state. Warwick’s recordings of songs such as “A House is not a Home,” “Alfie,” ”Valley of the Dolls,” and “The April Fools,” made her a pioneer as one of the first female artists to popularize classic movie themes. Warwick began singing during her childhood years in East Orange, New Jersey, initially in church. Occasionally, she sang as a soloist and fill-in voice for the renowned Drinkard Singers, a group comprised of her mother Lee, along with her aunts, including Aunt Cissy, Whitney Houston’s mom, and her uncles. During her teens, Warwick and her sister Dee Dee started their own gospel group, The Gospelaires. Warwick attended The Hartt College of Music in Hartford, Connecticut, and during that time, began making trips to New York to do regular session work. In 1962, one such demo was presented to Scepter Records, which launched a hit-filled 12 -year association with the label. Known as the artist who “bridged the gap,” Warwick’s soulful blend of pop, gospel and R&B music transcended race, culture, and musical boundaries. In 1970, Warwick received her second GRAMMY® Award for the best-selling album, “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again,” and began her second decade of hits with Warner Bros. She then teamed up with Isaac Hayes for a highly successful world tour, “A Man and a Woman.” In 1976, Warwick signed with Arista Records, beginning a third decade of hit-making. Arista Records label-mate Barry Manilow produced her first Platinum-selling album, “Dionne,” which included back-to-back hits “I’ll Never Love This Way Again,” and “Déjà vu.” Both recordings earned GRAMMY® Awards, making Warwick the first female artist to win the Best Female Pop and Best Female R&B Performance Awards. Warwick’s 1982 album, “Heartbreaker,” co-produced by Barry Gibb and the Bee Gees, became an international chart-topper. In 1985, she reunited with composer Burt Bacharach and longtime friends Gladys Knight, Elton John and Stevie Wonder to record the landmark song “That’s What Friends Are For,” which became a number one hit record around the world and the first recording dedicated to raising awareness and major funds (over $3 Million) for the AIDS cause in support of AMFAR, which Warwick continues to support. Throughout the 1980′s and 1990′s, Warwick collaborated with many of her musical peers, including Johnny Mathis, Smokey Robinson, Luther Vandross, Jeffrey Osborne, Kashif and Stevie Wonder. Additionally, in September 2008, Warwick added “author” to her list of credits with two best-selling children’s books, “Say A Little Prayer,” and “Little Man,” and her first best-selling autobiography, “My Life As I See It” for Simon & Schuster. Always one to give back, Warwick has supported and campaigned for many causes and charities close to her heart, including AIDS, The Starlight Foundation, children’s hospitals, world hunger, disaster relief and music education for which she has been recognized and honored and has raised millions of dollars. In 1987, she was appointed the first United States Ambassador of Health by President Ronald Reagan and in 2002, served as Global Ambassador for Health and Ambassador for the United Nations’ Food & Agriculture Organization (FAO), and she continues to serve as Ambassador today. In recognition of her accomplishments and support of education, a New Jersey school was named in her honor, the Dionne Warwick Institute for Economics and Entrepreneurship. Warwick was also a key participating artist in the all-star charity single, “We Are the World,” and in 1984, performed at “Live Aid.” Celebrating 50 years in entertainment, and the 25th Anniversary of “That’s What Friends Are For,” Warwick hosted and headlined an all-star benefit concert for World Hunger Day in London. In addition, she was honored by AMFAR in a special reunion performance of “That’s What Friends are For,” alongside Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder at AMFAR’s Anniversary Gala in New York City. Authenticity is a hard nut to crack, but there are a few hallmarks of the video game arcade of days gone by: first, they have video games. Lots and lots of video games, and (usually) pinball machines. They’re dark (so that you can see the screens better), and they don’t sell food or booze. You can make an exception for a lonely vending machine, sure, but full meals? No thanks. There’s no sign outside that says you “must be 21 to enter.” These are rarely family-friendly institutions, either. Your mom wouldn’t want to be there, and nobody would want her there, anyway. This is a place for kids to be with other kids, teens to be with other teens, and early-stage adults to serve as the ambassador badasses in residence for the younger generation. It’s noisy, with all the kids yelling and the video games on permanent demo mode, beckoning you to waste just one more quarter. In earlier days (though well into the ‘90s), it’s sometimes smoky inside, and the cabinets bear the scars of many a forgotten cig left hanging off the edge while its owner tries one last time for a high score, inevitably ending in his or her death. The defining feature of a “real” arcade, however, is that there aren’t really any left."   76.    Open Comments:   77.    The years between 1978 and 1982 saw unprecedented growth across the entire video game industry. A January 1982 cover story in Time magazine noted that the most popular machines were pulling in $400 a week in quarters and the number of dedicated arcades in the United States reached its peak with around 13,000. Video game cabinets also appeared in grocery stores, drug stores, doctor’s offices, and even in school recreation centers. The arcade chain Tilt began opening locations in the growing number of shopping malls across America. Beginning with Space Invaders in 1978, a string of now legendary games were released in rapid succession: Galaxian ('79), Asteroids ('79), Berzerk ('80), Centipede ('80), Rally-X ('80), Defender ('81), Donkey Kong ('81), Frogger ('81), Galaga ('81), Ms. Pac-Man ('81), Dig Dug ('82), Donkey Kong Jr. (('82), Joust ('82), Pole Position ('82), Q*bert ('82), and Tron ('82).    78.    Simultaneously, the home console business blossomed: from the primitive Magnavox Odyssey in 1972, the concept of home gaming erupted with the Atari 2600 and the Apple II in 1977, the Intellivision in 1980, the Commodore 64 and ColecoVision in 1982, and the NES and Sega Master System in 1985.But it was 1980’s Pac-Man, the most successful video arcade game of all time, released by Midway in the United States, which had the most lasting effects on the industry and the American psyche.   79.    Audio Clip:   80.    Question: What do you say about the following criticisms: Ingrains scripts of violence and aggression into the psyche. / Too much sex, nudity, and mistreatment of women. / Poor portrayal of race / Addiction leading to health problems and obesity.   81.    Music Scene   82.    Black Songs from the Top 40    83.    4    "Rock with You"    Michael Jackson   84.    8    "Funkytown"    Lipps Inc   85.    13    "Cruisin"    Smokey Robinson   86.    14    "Working My Way Back to You/Forgive Me, Girl"    The Spinners   87.    18    "Upside Down"    Diana Ross   88.    19    "Please Don't Go"    KC and the Sunshine Band   89.    21    "With You I'm Born Again"    Billy Preston and Syreeta   90.    22    "Shining Star"    The Manhattans   91.    23    "Still"    Commodores   92.    29    "Cupid/I've Loved You for a Long Time"    The Spinners   93.    30    "Let's Get Serious"    Jermaine Jackson   94.    35    "Ladies' Night"    Kool & the Gang   95.    36    "Too Hot"    Kool & the Gang   96.    37    "Take Your Time (Do It Right)"    The SOS Band   97.    38    "No More Tears (Enough Is Enough)"    Barbra Streisand & Donna Summer   98.    42    "Special Lady"    Ray, Goodman & Brown   99.    43    "Send One Your Love"    Stevie Wonder   100.    44    "The Second Time Around"    Shalamar   101.    Vote:   102.    Top R&B Albums   103.    Jan - Off the Wall    Michael Jackson   104.    Feb - The Whispers    The Whispers   105.    Apr - Light Up the Night    The Brothers Johnson   106.    May - Go All the Way    The Isley Brothers   107.    Jun - Let’s Get Serious    Jermaine Jackson   108.    Jul - Cameosis    Cameo   109.    Jul - diana    Diana Ross   110.    Sep - Give Me the Night    George Benson   111.    Oct - Love Approach    Tom Browne   112.    Oct - Zapp    Zapp   113.    Nov - Triumph    The Jacksons   114.    Nov - Hotter Than July    Stevie Wonder   115.    Vote:   116.    Key Artists: Roger Troutman and Zapp   117.    Roger Troutman (@ 29 yrs. old) singer, composer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and producer.   118.    Born and raised in Hamilton, OH, the fourth child of nine, he gravitated toward music at an extremely early age; he was only five years old when he received his first guitar.   119.    By 11, he was playing in local bands with one of his brothers.    120.    Influenced by old-schoolers B.B. King, Jimmy Reed, Chuck Jackson, and Junior Walker, and then-current chart-toppers The Temptations, Wilson Pickett, and the Beatles, by the late '60s, Roger had added Hammond organ to his resumé of instruments, and 2 more brothers.   121.    Like many of his generation, Roger and his brothers became enraptured by such funk/rock artists as Jimi Hendrix, the Isley Brothers, Stevie Wonder, and Funkadelic.   122.    By age 26, the band was playing shows all over the U.S. and Canada. The group added another Troutman brother to their ranks ((4 in total), Terry, who went by the nickname of "Zapp," and that soon became the group's new name.   123.    Shortly thereafter, Bootsy Collins' brother, Phelps "Catfish" Collins, happened to catch a gig by Zapp, who put them in touch with Bootsy, who then brought them to the attention of George Clinton. Clinton promptly signing the group to his own custom label, Uncle Jam.   124.    Clinton got Roger (Not Zapp) a performance spot at a 1979 Awards show and declared “Roger Troutman as the most talented musician” he'd ever seen in his life. Roger’s performance created a buzz for Zapp's self-titled debut release, issued in 1980.   125.    Audio clips   126.    After the 1980 release of Zapp's debut album, tensions rose between Roger Troutman and George Clinton. Troutman's solo album “The Many Facets of Roger” was primarily funded by Clinton and Clinton was experiencing financial troubles due to his poor management skills and shifting tastes in music.   127.    Troutman could see the disarray surrounding Clinton and severed their partnership by accepting a higher offer for the album from Warner Bros. and cut Clinton out of the picture.   128.    Clinton's view was, "…I paid for it. I don't like to go into it on the negative side, but it cost about 5 million [dollars], and a lot of people's jobs and what we consider as the empire falling". - The financial loss from the rupture with Troutman is credited as one of the factors that derailed Clinton's musical career and sent Funkadelic into hiatus.   129.    On Sunday morning, April 25, 1999, Roger Troutman was fatally wounded as a result of an apparent murder-suicide that was orchestrated by his older brother, Larry. Roger was shot several times in the torso by Larry as he exited a recording studio. Larry's body was found in a car a short distance away from the murder scene. There were no witnesses at the time, and Larry's motive for the murder of Roger remains unclear. Larry had been experiencing increasingly severe financial problems managing the family-run business. Larry might also have been bitter after Roger fired him as manager of his music career, a position Larry had held for several years.   130.    After Troutman's death, Ice Cube said that "More Bounce To The Ounce" introduced him to hip-hop. "I was in the sixth grade, we'd stayed after school. We had this dude named Mr. Lock, and he used to bring in his radio with these pop-lockers. He used to teach [the dance group] the L.A. Lockers, and he would do community service in after-school programs. He knew a lot of kids and introduced them to all the new dances, he put on that song 'More Bounce', and they started pop-locking. And I think from that visual, from seeing that, it was my first introduction into hip-hop. Period. I didn't know nothing about nothing. I hadn't heard 'Rapper's Delight' yet. It was the first thing that was really fly to me. They started dancing, and since 'More Bounce' goes on forever, they just got down. I just think that was a rush of adrenaline for me, like a chemical reaction in my brain.”   131.    Open Comments   132.    Black Movies: Fame   133.    Blending elements of straight drama, music, and dance, FAME shadows a group of gifted students (including singer Irene Cara, dancer Gene Anthony Ray, and composer Lee Currieri) during their time at New York's prestigious High School of Performing Arts, where they're learning the skills they need to succeed. The film -- which won two Oscars for its music (including a Best Original Song statuette for the title track "Fame" -- spawned a 1980s TV series of the same name that allowed several of its young stars to reprise their roles and gave Debbie Allen a much more prominent role as a no-nonsense dance teacher.   134.    Critical response: Gene Siskel of the Chicago Tribune, "When the kids perform, the movie sings, but their fictionalized personal stories are melodramatic drivel." -  Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times, "Fame is a genuine treasure, moving and entertaining, a movie that understands being a teen-ager as well as Breaking Away did, but studies its characters in a completely different milieu."   135.    Audio Clips   136.    Open Comments   137.    Black Television: Eddie Murphy – The Young Prince   138.    Edward Regan Murphy, (@ 19 yrs. old), Comedian, actor, screen writer, film producer, and singer? He was the dominant comedic voice during the 1980s.    139.    Born and raised in NYC, parents split when he was 3, father died when he was eight, lived in foster care for a year, and began doing stand-up comedy after listening to "That Nigger's Crazy", by Richard Pryor, when he was 15.   140.    Doing impersonations of Al Green at talents shows helped him land gigs at late night clubs.   141.    After the 79-80 season of SNL wrapped for summer break, the show had a major shakeup. OG Producer, Lorene Michaels and the OG cast left. After the new producer was hired, she had 2 months to re-cast the show.   142.    In September 19-year-old Eddie contacted the show and repeatedly pleaded for an audition. 2 months later he made his national television debut.   143.    Audio Clips   144.    Major criticism:” Welcome Back, Eddie Murphy! The rise and fall and rise of America's most dangerous comic” - Chris Nashawaty November 06, 2011 - [https://ew.com/article/2011/11/06/welcome-back-eddie-murphy-the-rise-and-fall-and-rise-of-americas-most-dangerous-comic/]   145.    “If you grew up watching Eddie Murphy chomping on a cigar as Gumby or getting gunned down in a hail of bullets as Buckwheat on Saturday Night Live, or better yet, dropping F-bombs as the cool-cat star of 48 Hrs., Trading Places, and Beverly Hills Cop, it’s hard to wrap your head around the fact that there’s a whole generation out there that has no clue just how funny and dirty he once was. When they think of Eddie Murphy — if they even think of him at all — it’s as the donkey from the kiddie franchise Shrek, or the once-dangerous comedian desperately searching for laughs in fart gags and fat suits in The Klumps.”   146.    Audio Clips   147.    Open Comments   148.    Question: Is Eddie funny or formula?   149.    Vote: Favorite Pop Culture thing for the year?

From 1969 -1974 he published 16 novels that helped establish the genre.   34.    Urban fiction working definition: Works of art set in urban America dealing with drugs, violence, and sex, involving African    35.    American or Latino characters. The genre is also known as Street Fiction, Gangsta Lit, Ghetto Lit, or Hip-Hop Fiction.   36.    Goines was born in Detroit, Michigan. His parents were a middle-class African-American couple that ran a laundry business. At 15 Goines lied about his age to join the Air Force, where he fought in the Korean War. During his stint in the armed forces, Goines developed an addiction to heroin that continued after his discharge from the military in the mid-1950s. To support his addiction, Goines turned to crime, this included pimping, and theft. He began writing while serving a sentence in Michigan's Jackson Penitentiary. Goines initially attempted to write westerns but decided to write urban fiction after reading Iceberg Slim's autobiography Pimp: The Story of My Life.   37.    Goines continued to write novels at an accelerated pace to support his drug addictions, sixteen books in five years, with some books taking only a month to complete. His series about Kenyatta (under the name Al C. Clark) describes a black revolutionary, who campaigns against exploitation and evils of inner-city life. On October 21, 1974, Goines and his common-law wife were discovered dead in their Detroit apartment. The police had received an anonymous phone call and responded, discovering Goines in the living room of the apartment and his common-law wife Shirley Sailor's body in the kitchen.   38.    Goines books are still popular, especially in the prison system. His books have gone on to sell millions of copies and have never been out of print, making him one of the most successful African-American authors in history.   39.    His books have been utilized in several prison literacy programs and his novel "Dopefiend" (1971) has been taught in a Rutgers University class.   40.    Other popular titles: Whoreson (1972), Black Gangster (1972), Street Players (1973), White Man's Justice, Black Man's Grief (1973), and Black Girl Lost (1974)   41.    ***Question: has anyone read his books?   42.    Donald's work was deeply influenced by Iceberg Slim.   43.    In 1961, after serving 10 months of solitary confinement in a Cook County jail, Robert Maupin (a.k.a. Slim) decided he was too old for a life of pimping and was unable to compete with younger, more ruthless pimps. In an interview with the Washington Post, he said he retired "because I was old. I did not want to be teased, tormented and brutalized by young whores."   44.    In 1967, he published two books; A memoir, "Pimp: The Story of My Life" and the novel "Trick Baby"   45.    ***Question: has anyone read his books?   46.    Iceberg and Donald's work made a HUGE impact on the youth growing up in the 70's and 80's.   47.    "Pimp" inspired the screenplay for the 1973 film "The Mack", starring Max Julien and Richard Pryor.   48.    Various other entertainers were also influenced by Goines and Slim: Dave Chappelle, Eddie Murphy, Chris Rock, Katt Williams,    49.    Eddie Griffin, Ice-T, Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, 2Pac, Ludacris, Nas, and Jay-Z, just to name a few.   50.    Iceberg and Donald also proved that a commercial "Black" book market did exist.   51.    A new "post" Hip-Hop revival of contemporary urban fiction happened at the end of the 1990s, as demand for novels authentically conveying the urban experience increased, and new business models enabled fledgling writers to more easily bring a manuscript to market and to libraries.   52.    One of the first writers in this new cycle of urban fiction was Omar Tyree, who published the novel Flyy Girl.    53.    The genre gained significant momentum in 1999 with Sister Souljah's bestseller The Coldest Winter Ever. Teri Woods's True to the Game was also published in 1999.The publishing of these three novels created a momentum of readership for urban fiction and carried that wave for years. All three books are considered classics in the renaissance of the genre.   54.    Major writers of contemporary urban fiction include Wahida Clark, Vickie Stringer, Nikki Turner, Kole Black, K'wan, Toy Styles, Kwame Teague, and the writing duo Meesha Mink & De'Nesha Diamond.   55.    ***Question: has anyone read any of these books?   56.    The reach of urban fiction into a large youth readership is undeniable today, particularly among adolescent girls.   57.    Critics and supporters are pleased that Black youth are reading. But some have mixed feelings about promoting literacy by any means necessary. “To some extent, there is an exposure to a part of urban culture that has rarely been explored in a way that it is now…which can be a starting point for civic dialogues,” offers Tracey Michae’l Lewis, who teaches writing and literature at Community College of Philadelphia and Philadelphia University. “Unfortunately, we have to ask ourselves, ‘What is this costing us?’”   58.    Scholars have differing opinions on Urban Fiction. Some believe that it is low reading, like a trashy book, that is not of high quality. Those who believe this think that prisoners and adolescent should be reading more elevated works.   59.    On the other hand, are scholars who say that African Americans appear to be reading street lit to find themselves and escape themselves at the same time. Some readers just enjoy losing themselves in portrayals of lavish lifestyles, racy sex and ride-or-die dramas of the streets, while others enjoy the genre for its reflective qualities.   60.    [Contributing source: Debating Black “Street Lit,” New Urban Fiction May 31, 2008 / Joe / African Americans, book review, urban]   61.    ***Question: Is urban art (books/films/music) really and truly a problem?   62.    ###The Music Scene   63.    6 - "Shining Star", Earth, Wind & Fire   64.    13 - "Lovin' You", Minnie Riperton   65.    14 - "Kung Fu Fighting", Carl Douglas   66.    18 - "He Don't Love You (Like I Love You)", Tony Orlando and Dawn   67.    20 - "Pick Up the Pieces", Average White Band   68.    21 - "The Hustle", Van McCoy & the Soul City Symphony   69.    22 - "Lady Marmalade", Labelle   70.    23 - "Why Can't We Be Friends", War   71.    24 - "Love Won't Let Me Wait", Major Harris   72.    25 - "Boogie On Reggae Woman", Stevie Wonder   73.    27 - "Fight the Power", The Isley Brothers   74.    30 - "Fire", Ohio Players   75.    ***Vote:    76.    Jan: Fire, The Ohio Players   77.    Feb: Kung Fu Fighting and Other Great Love Songs, Carl Douglas   78.    Feb:  New and Improved, The Spinners   79.    Feb: Do It ('Til You're Satisfied), B.T. With hit songs such as "This Will Be (An Everlasting Love)," the album exploded onto the music scene, earning the young starlet her first two Grammy Awards—for best new artist and best female R&B performance.   109.    Cole's career took flight: she turned out four gold and two platinum records / in 1979, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame / Cole hit a lull in her career in the early 1980s due to her struggle with drug addiction / in 1991, she released Unforgettable... with Love. and won a Grammy for album of the year / in 2008, "Still Unforgettable" won another Grammy for best traditional pop vocal album.   110.    Personal Life and Death: The death of her father, when she was 15 yrs. old, greatly affected her and put a strain on Cole's relationship with her mother. In her 2000 autobiography, Angel on my Shoulder, Cole exposed her depression and heavy drug use throughout her career. She began using in college. She overcame her addiction in 1983. Few comics today will talk about their own careers without mentioning the inspiration they received from Pryor. A talented yet controversial man, most people either love him unconditionally or hate him passionately.    117.    Early Life: For much of his youth, Pryor was left in his grandmother's care and lived in the brothel she ran. He also experienced sexual abuse as a child, according to his official website. To step away from the grim reality of his life, Pryor found solace in going to the movies. Expelled from school at age 14, Pryor ended up working a string of jobs until he joined the military in 1958. He served in the army for only two years, as he was discharged for fighting with another soldier.   118.    Early Career: Returning home, he found work as a stand-up comic throughout the Midwest, playing African-American clubs in such cities as East St. Louis and Pittsburgh. In 1963, Pryor moved to New York City. The following year, he made his television debut on the variety show On Broadway Tonight. Guest appearances followed on such programs as The Merv Griffin Show and The Ed Sullivan Show. At the time, his act was modeled after two African-American comedians he admired, Bill Cosby and Dick Gregory.   119.    In 1960, while playing in Las Vegas at the Flamingo Hotel, he had a panic attack and walked off stage. He wanted to give voice to the winos, pimps, dealers, and other characters in his head. He retreated to Berkeley, California, where he met a variety of counterculture figures, including Black Panther leader Huey P. Newton.   120.    Mainstream Success: In the early 1970s, Pryor scored several successes as an actor and comedian. He earned positive reviews for his supporting role in the Billie Holiday biopic Lady Sings the Blues (1972), starring Diana Ross. In 1973, he netted his first Emmy Award nomination (outstanding writing achievement in comedy, variety) for his work on The Lily Tomlin Show. The following year, Pryor took home his first Emmy (best writing in comedy, variety) for another collaboration with Lily Tomlin: the comedy special Lily (1973). Pryor also wrote for such shows as The Flip Wilson Show and Sanford and Son, which starred comedian Redd Foxx. Continuing to thrive professionally, Pryor co-starred with Max Julien in the film "The Mack" 91973) and worked with Mel Brooks on the screenplay for the western spoof Blazing Saddles (1974). His own work was also attracting a lot of attention. Despite its X-rated content, his third comedy albums sold extremely well and won the Grammy Award for Best Comedy Recordings in 1974, 1975, and 1976.   121.    Fans of all racial backgrounds were captivated by Pryor's comedy, which consisted of situational and character-driven humor in place of straightforward jokes. He poked fun at the white establishment and explored the racial divide. By the late 1970s, Pryor had a thriving career as a stand-up comic and movie actor.   122.    Audio Clips   123.    Troubled Personal Life: Pryor had a long history of substance abuse and stormy relationships. He got into legal trouble in the early 1970s for failing to file tax returns. / In 1978, Pryor had another run-in with the law after he shot his estranged wife's car. / Pryor’s health began to suffer, and he endured his first heart attack in 1978 / In June 1980, after several days of freebasing cocaine, he lit himself on fire in a suicide attempt /    124.    Later Years: In 1986, Pryor was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, a disease that affects the central nervous system. By the early 1990s, the once-kinetic Pryor was confined to a wheelchair. The comedian wrote the autobiography Pryor Convictions: And Other Life Sentences with Todd Gold, earning critical acclaim upon its release in 1995. In 2001, Pryor remarried Jennifer Lee. He spent his final years with her at his California home. Outside of performing, Pryor was an advocate for animal rights and opposed animal testing. He established Pryor's Planet, a charity for animals.   125.    Death and Legacy: On December 10, 2005, Pryor died of a heart attack at a Los Angeles area hospital. In addition to providing audiences with both hilarious and moving performances, he paved the way for African-American comedians like Eddie Murphy and Chris Rock to make their mark. "Pryor started it all. He made the blueprint for the progressive thinking of black comedians, unlocking that irreverent style," comedian and filmmaker Keenen Ivory Wayans explained to The New York Times.   126.    ***Question: Given his EXTEMELY troubled personal life, does he deserve praise, pity, or pilloried (ridiculed publicly)?   127.    ###Vote for Key Artist:   128.    ###The Movie Scene    129.    Dolemite: Played by Rudy Ray Moore, who co-wrote the film. Moore had developed the alter-ego as a stand-up comedian and released several comedy albums using this persona. The film has attained cult status. Plot: Dolemite is a pimp and nightclub owner who is serving 20 years in prison after being set up by a rival, Willie Green. One day, his friend and fellow pimp Queen Bee helps him get out of jail, and plots with him to get revenge on Green.   130.    Mahogany: A romantic drama directed by Berry Gordy and produced by Motown Productions.  Mahogany stars Diana Ross as Tracy Chambers, a struggling fashion design student who rises to become a popular fashion designer in Rome. Fresh from the success of Lady Sings the Blues, this film served as Ross' follow-up feature film.   131.    Let's Do It Again is an action crime comedy directed by and starring Sidney Poitier and co-starring Bill Cosby and Jimmie Walker. The film, directed by Poitier, is about blue-collar workers who decide to rig a boxing match to raise money for their fraternal lodge. The song of the same name by The Staple Singers was featured as the opening and ending theme of the movie, and as a result, the two have become commonly associated with each other.  This was the second film pairing of Poitier and Cosby following Uptown Saturday Night, and followed by A Piece of the Action (1977). Of the three, Let's Do It Again has been the most successful both critically and commercially. [FYI...Calvin Lockhart was Biggie Smalls and Jimmie Walker as Bootney Farnsworth]   132.    ###Key Movie: Cooley High: [My Favorite movie of all-time!]   133.    Summary: "...But "Cooley High" was no exploitation film. Unlike the other black stories being told on screen in the early '70s, this one wasn't about crime, racism, drugs, vengeance, or black-power heroes and heroines who stuck it to the Man. It was just about teens doing what teens do -- hanging out, going to school, going to parties, hooking up, cruising the streets, and dreaming of the future. Yes, there was petty crime and some tragic violence, but they weren't the focus of the story. It was just a slice of life, both specific and universal. As a result, "Cooley High" marked the beginning of the shift in African-American cinema away from blaxploitation toward more diverse stories of black life, although it would take another 20 years for that transition to be fully realized." - 'Cooley High' Is the Most Influential Movie You've Never Seen, by Gary Susman, moviefone.com   134.    Audio Clips   135.    In film, coming of age is a genre of teen films. Coming-of-age films focus on the psychological and moral growth or transition of a protagonist from youth to adulthood. Personal growth and change are an important characteristic of this genre, which relies on dialogue and emotional responses, rather than action. The main character is typically male, around mid-teen and the story is often told in the form of a flashback.   136.    Films in this subgenre include Bambi (1942), Oliver! (1967), American Graffiti (1973), Breaking Away (1979), The Last American Virgin (1982), The Breakfast Club (1985), Stand by Me (1986), Almost Famous (2000), the Harry Potter series (2001–2011), and Moonlight (2016)   137.    ***Question: The movie dealt with friendships, loyalty, betrayal, forgiveness, and regrets. Do you have any personal stories to tell that deal with these issues?   138.    ###The TV Scene: The Jefferson’s   139.    Sample review: Parents need to know that this classic '70s/'80s sitcom -- which follows an African-American couple who move to an upper-class Manhattan apartment in a primarily Caucasian neighborhood -- combines strong racial stereotypes with some positive representations of African Americans and interracial relationships. George Jefferson is stubborn, mean-spirited, and bigoted, and the show uses strong words like "damn" and racial epithets like "honky." The show is generally mild by today's standards, but George's inappropriate behavior and language may send iffy messages to younger viewers.   140.    For many black Americans, the news of actor Sherman Hemsley’s death represents a two-fold loss of both an incredible talent and the captivating character that was George Jefferson. By portraying the outspoken and incredibly honest Mr. Jefferson, who was never too shy to speak candidly about race relations in the seventies, Hemsley and his cast mates had a major effect on American television through the hit sitcom “The Jefferson’s.”    141.    As the longest-running series with a predominantly African American cast, the show was one of the first to portray a successful black family, paving the way for future sitcoms like “The Cosby Show” and “The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.” It was also the first series to prominently feature an interracial couple with the characters Helen and Tom Willis, using its makeup of colorful personalities to create humorous commentary about race in the United States at the time.    142.    Making its debut in 1975, the show mimicked its parent series “All In The Family,” but instead focused on a black household. George Jefferson displayed his distrust of white people and shared his views on race in America with a fervor that rivaled Archie Bunker’s comical, yet stinging, opinions about minorities. The show explored issues rarely discussed on television, and the characters’ frequent use of racially charged terms like “nigger” and “honky” placed the series in a class all its own. Although George and his wife Louise “Weezy” Jefferson’s sudden success catapulted them into a predominantly white world, they represented the epitome of black culture. Even the show’s popular theme song was reminiscent of the gospel tunes often heard in black churches.    143.    “The Jeffersons” use of confrontational humor and candid commentary that helped ease the discussion of topics like race and class on American television (and beyond) is the cornerstone of the show’s legacy. Its characters opened doors for future black actors, and its success proved that African American sitcoms did, in fact, resonate with general audiences.    144.    ***Open Comments:   145.    Legacy: We also recognized the familiar in George's willingness to put on airs if it meant seizing an advantage against a rival or gaining one from a potential patron, backing down only when it became clear that his honor or family's well-being was at risk. It was easy to mistake George's hustle as symptoms of a gratuitous and crass materialism, but, his endless striving, the relentless quest to impress the Wittendales of the world or to get into a posh tennis club, even though he had no clue or interest in the sport, was always about survival. Money, in George's mind, represented the best defense against discrimination. "Let me tell you something about people," George tells his old adversary Archie Bunker at a cocktail party. "That bartender's willing to work for me because if you got enough green in your pocket, then black becomes his favorite color." - What 'The Jeffersons' Taught Me About Being an American. SHERVIN MALEKZADEH  AUG 7, 2012   146.    "...And the previous, say, eight years or so were characterized by efforts to sort of break down institutional racism in America from the Civil Rights Act to desegregation in schools. And so, you had this whole level of black folks who were just being held back by institutional racism, and once those bonds started to break, they could build businesses. They could get great jobs, and they could move into the middle class and upper middle class in a way that they hadn't been able to do before. And "The Jeffersons" in its own way, even though it was also a very typical sitcom, very broad, it also talked about those elements. You know, George had to deal with his friends from the old neighborhood. They would come to visit and embarrass him because he was trying to impress the new wealthy people that he lived with in his new high-rise. And, you know, there was always that tension, and I think some black folks were going through that in their own lives. They could recognize a bit of that in what George Jefferson was doing. - Heard on All Things Considered, NPR   147.    ***Question: Was the show too unrealistic/out of reach?   148.    ***Vote: 1975 biggest legacy?

This week Lee and Daniel conclude the podcast's first serious look at noir, neo-noir, and crime films in general, with Paul Thomas Anderson's "Inherent Vice", from 2014. Because Daniel is such a big fan of both director and author, the conversation gets in depth about PT Anderson and Thomas Pynchon. Lee and Daniel also converse about their different takes on the film and how it's held up for them with repeated viewings. Also discussed in some depth, in an effort to perv up the podcast's reputation a bit, the career of actress Michelle Sinclair, formerly known as the porn star Belladonna -- who had a minor role in the film -- is talked about. It's almost a mini bit of what the amazing Rialto Report does on a regular basis. Also covered: listener comments and what they've watched as of late. "Inherent Vice":http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1791528/combined The Rialto Report: http://www.therialtoreport.com/ Belladonna: http://www.enterbelladonna.com/ Featured Music: "Harvest" by Neil Young; "Never My Love" by The Association; and "Any Day Now" by Chuck Jackson.

He also had Multiple Sclerosis and used a wheelchair. In 1974, Lomax was working at the Panthers' George Jackson Clinic, which provided free community medical care as part of the BPP serve the people programs. Recognizing the need for more disability services and supports in his own community, in 1975, Lomax approached Ed Roberts (who had helped found the Center for Independent Living in Berkeley in 1972), with a proposal to open a Center for Independent Living (CIL) in East Oakland under Black Panther sponsorship. Less than a year later, with Lomax as one of a two-person staff, the East Oakland CIL opened in a storefront, offering basic peer counseling and attendant referral. The BPP had no particular disability policy, but with Lomax's active participation in disability advocacy, they began supporting other initiatives, most notably the historic 504 sit-ins to force the government to implement Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Bradley Lomax was an active participant in the sit-in, a sacrifice which much affected his disability later in life, and afterwards was a member the contingent that took the disability message to Washington DC. Quote from Corbett O'Toole, who stayed in the building for the duration of the protest, highlights how critical his involvement was: By far the most critical gift given us by our allies was the Black Panthers' commitment to feed each protester in the building one hot meal every day..The Panthers' representative explained that the decision of Panthers Brad Lomax and Chuck Jackson to participate in the sit-in necessitated a Panther response..and that if Lomax and Jackson thought we were worth their dedication, then the Panthers would support all of us. I was a white girl from Boston who'd been carefully taught that all African American males were necessarily/of necessity my enemy. But I understood promises to support each others' struggles.
