Has there ever been a group like Talking Heads? Jonathan Gould's Burning Down The House explores their affluent background, the root of their ambition and the springboard of the New York scene of the late ‘70s (he was a regular at CBGB). Along with … ... the romanticised image of CBGB and the reality … their black music roots: “the same instrumentation as Booker T & the MGs” … the influence of the Modern Lovers: “Jonathan Richman and Byrne were both oddballs, appealing but peculiar” … how the economy of New York's real estate let them rent a 2,000 square foot loft for $289 a month … bands from affluent backgrounds take greater commercial risks: “there was always a Plan B” … the art-school drop-out lineage that began John Lennon and Keith Richards … how different they were from the CBGBs acts, a band that sang verses in French and “didn't dress like the New York Dolls” … the band's dynamic, Chris and Tina “effectively one person” ... did Byrne really make Tina Weymouth “re-audition”? … the success of the Tom Tom Club and the tension that caused … Byrne's invention of his own “white choreography” … Stop Making Sense, as big a part of their legacy as any album … and why there can never be a reunion Mentioned in dispatches: Brian Eno, Adrian Belew, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, Johnny Ramone and Fela Kuti. Friday's “What's Buggin' You” segment for 8-29-25
On the 50th anniversary of Talking Heads, acclaimed music biographer Jonathan Gould presents the long-overdue, definitive story of this singular band, capturing the gritty energy of 1970s New York City and showing how a group of art students brought fringe culture to rock's mainstream, forever changing the look and sound of popular music."Psycho Killer." "Take Me to the River." "Road to Nowhere." Few musical artists have had the lasting impact and relevance of Talking Heads. One of the foundational bands of New York's downtown 1970s music scene, Talking Heads have endured as a musical and cultural force for decades. Their unique brand of transcendent, experimental rock remains a lingering influence on popular music-despite their having disbanded over thirty years ago.Now New Yorker contributor Jonathan Gould offers an authoritative, deeply researched account of a band whose sound, fame, and legacy forever connected rock music to the cultural avant-garde. From their art school origins to the enigmatic charisma of David Byrne and the internal tensions that ultimately broke them apart, Gould tells the story of a group that emerged when rock music was still young and went on to redefine the prevailing expectations of how a band could sound, look, and act. At a time when guitar solos, lead-singer swagger, and sweaty stadium tours reigned supreme, Talking Heads were precocious, awkward, quirky, and utterly distinctive when they first appeared on the ragged stages of the East Village. Yet they would soon mature into one of the most accomplished and uncompromising recording and performing acts of their era.More than just a biography of a band, Gould masterfully captures the singular time and place that incubated and nurtured this original music: downtown New York in the 1970s, that much romanticized, little understood milieu where art, music, and commerce collided in the urban dystopia of Lower Manhattan. What emerges is an expansive portrait of a unique cultural moment and an iconoclastic band that shifted the paradigm of popular music by burning down the house of mainstream rock.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.
Welcome to the One Hundred & Eightieth Edition of The Chronicles Of Podcast, These are The Chronicles of Bex Singer-songwriter Bex finally joins us for a full episode of The Chronicles of Podcast after two brilliant chats at 2000 Trees Festival. In this full-length conversation, we dive into her early days in music and the unexpected way she got into alternative rock. Bex shares why she decided to go solo and now be in a band, the real inspiration behind her raw and honest lyrics, and how her iconic mascot 'Big Bex' came to life. We also chat about the strange comparisons she often gets to a certain famous singer — and why we don't hear the resemblance at all and one of the greatest stories ever told on this show regarding a house fire! Also, we have an emotional tribute to two absolute legends we sadly lost this past week – the Prince of Darkness himself, Ozzy Osbourne, and the immortal wrestling icon, Hulk Hogan. Their legacies are celebrated with stories, memories, and a powerful listener-led musical tribute to Ozzy and Black Sabbath. Then we flip the tone to bring the laughs as the boys explore the bizarre world of competitive litter picking with the Spogomy World Championship. Tom brings the important questions as always, like: why were wife-swapping reality TV shows ever a thing? Jamie shares tales from his birthday week, his quest to find bulls in Birmingham, and his pilgrimage to iconic Ozzy and Black Sabbath landmarks. Meanwhile, Tom marvels at the wonders of Cost Co bargains and wraps up AEW All In: Texas. You'll also enjoy our regular listener-loved segments: Callum's Teachings returns with a new batch of brilliantly odd observations – including one about why clocks in kitchens are strangely common. Tom's Journal delivers the weirdest and funniest finds from across the internet, we spotlight two hot new music releases in our ‘Single of the Week' segment, and Jamie's audience participation challenge gets you involved by asking for your all-time favourite Ozzy Osbourne/Black Sabbath tracks. Welcome to the official Audio Guide to Burning Down the House By David Mach as part of Galway International Arts Festival 2025. David Mach is one of the UK's most successful, prolific and respected artists, best known for his dynamic and large-scale collage, and his imposing and provocative public art, sculpture and installations constructed from mass-produced materials including coat hangers, car tyres, newspapers and magazines. Mach's previous sensational GIAF exhibitions – 2012's Precious Light which featured the enormous crucifixion sculpture Golgotha, made from steel and wire coat hangers, and 2018's Rock 'n' Roll which saw Mach place a yacht, car and a caravan with multiple other objects and debris within a monumental quantity of painstakingly positioned newspapers; and 2023's The Oligarch's Nightmare which featured an exploding Range Rover – enjoyed record-breaking audiences. He returns to the Festival with this new site-specific installation Burning Down the House at the Festival Gallery, William Street. Imagine being a Democrat in the era of Trump v2.0. I have to give it to them, because they can take some punches, especially for being sissies. I mean, they're built like tofu—soft, mushy, and completely tasteless—but somehow, they still survive getting run over by a political Trump Train. Not a light tap. I'm talking about a full-throttle, whistle-blaring, conductor-waving, make-room-on-the-track kind of hit. And they just keep crawling back like they think they're Rocky. Sorry, Dems. This ain't a comeback story. It's a rerun, and Trump's ratings are going through the roof.Unless they change their evil ways, Democrats are doomed. It has been destined by God Himself.I heard a report that we have the cheapest gas in 4 years. Think this is an accident. This is something people notice. And they know who to credit. Do The Talking Heads, the quinessential art school band of the East Village scene of the 1970's, still matter? Very much so. At least according to the band's biographer, Jonathan Gould, who believes that The Talking Heads remain "the archetype of what we now think of as the alternative rock group" - a band prioritizing aesthetic evolution over commercial success. Born from New York's affordable cultural moment when rent cost $275 and abandoned industrial spaces fostered creativity, Talking Heads, Gould argues in Burning the House Down, emerged as agnostic questioners of rock conventions. They rejected "rock hair, rock lights, and singing like a black man," creating minimalist performances under stark white lighting. Their 1984 film "Stop Making Sense" appears utterly modern today, Gould says, suggesting their systematic deconstruction of musical expectations continues influencing artists four decades later. Five Key Takeaways 1. The Agnostic Approach Talking Heads were "agnostic about everything" - not just religion, but romantic love, rock conventions, and musical preconceptions. This systematic questioning of accepted norms became their defining creative principle.2. Class and Ambition Shaped Their Art Unlike working-class rock predecessors, they were privileged art school graduates who grew up expecting to "be something." This background fostered artistic ambition over simple commercial success, making them prototypes of the alternative rock ethos.3. New York's Economic Crisis Created Cultural Opportunity The city's 1970s near-bankruptcy made it affordable ($275/month rent) for young artists. The exodus of residents and businesses left vast industrial spaces available, enabling an unprecedented downtown cultural scene.4. Minimalism as Rebellion Their aesthetic rebellion involved subtraction, not addition - "no rock hair, no rock lights, no long guitar solos." Working with Brian Eno, they removed rather than added tracks, creating space through restraint.5. Timeless Modernity "Stop Making Sense" appears contemporary today because they focused on modernity rather than trends. Their systematic rejection of rock clichés created work that transcends its 1980s origins, explaining their continued influence on alternative music.Jonathan Gould is a writer and a former professional musician. Born and raised in New York City, he began playing drums in high school and became serious about it while attending Cornell University, which led him to move to Boston in 1975 to study with the eminent jazz drummer Alan Dawson. He went on to spend many years working in bands and recording studios in Boston, Woodstock, and New York City before turning his full attention to writing about music in the early 1990s under the mentorship of the retired New Yorker editor William Shawn. In addition to his playing and writing about music, Jonathan also raised a family, served in local politics, and took an active role in the life of the upstate New York community where he lived for twenty-five years. We're diving into two extraordinary offerings from Four Score Brewing Company in Gettysburg, PA, and they've left us absolutely stunned. You think we're shipping the wrong people to Guantanamo? I'm old enough to remember a time when, if some civilian loudmouth waltzed through your front door barking orders, you could kick him in the plums, give him the old heave and also the ho, and get back to whatever it was you were doing before all the bad noise started. Yet somehow, in the Year of Our Lard 2025, we've allowed this porcelain pissant from South Africa to start rearranging the national furniture, to say nothing of the org chart, without so much as a “Just who the hell elected you to anything, anyway, Fisheyes?” Raise a ruckus and you get frog-marched out the door, either to the breadline or maybe a gated beachfront community that doesn't feature in Beelzebozo's plans for the tourist trade. Meanwhile, our media watchdogs just keep licking their own nuts; chasing random brain farts down countless odiferous ratholes; and “fact-checking” the arsonists who are burning down the government faster and more thoroughly than the Brits did during the War of 1812. But be of good cheer: There's plenty of bark and bite to be had in the latest edition of Radio Free Dogpatch! • Technical notes: RFD favors the Ethos mic from Earthworks Audio; Audio-Technica ATH-M50X headphones; Zoom H5 Handy Recorder; Apple's GarageBand, and Auphonic for a wash and brushup. The Captain from "Cool Hand Luke" communicates to us from YouTube. The boot to the bollocks and subsequent heave-ho hail from Freesound. The French taunter you may recall from "Monty Python and the Holy Grail." Air travel to Gitmo, a newspaper's printing press running, and soldiers on the march courtesy of Freesound. "Twisted Clowns" honk at us from Zapsplat. And last, but far from least, that's Sam Cooke working the "Chain Gang." All the other gang violence is the fault of Your Humble Narrator.

Plus, they explore why octopi (or is it octopuses?) might be Earth's next overlords, and why the federal government is basically just a really expensive jobs program for people who couldn't hack it in the real world. All this, and John Gruden discovers iced coffee.
In the first of two post-election episodes, Abby Livingston joins Peter to assess the multidimensional fallout from Trump's decisive victory, the consequences of Republicans taking the Senate, and whether last night's MAGA red wave will consume the House, too. Then they turn to the demographic warning signs that so many pundits missed. Almost everyone who walks into a casino feeling confident that they're gonna walk out richer is what is technically known as “a sucker.” Every game you play at a casino gives the house an edge. Not much of one—otherwise, why would people play? Players have to win a decent portion of the time, that's why they keep putting their money down on the table. But behind the glitz and glamour, casinos run on cold mathematical certainty. Over the long term, over hundreds of hands of cards and rolls of the dice and spins of the wheel, the house ultimately always wins. But what if they didn't? What if people, through brainpower and daring, managed to beat the odds and come out on top? It's a tantalizing thought—and for the people in these three stories, it was too tempting to pass up.Sources: https://www.888casino.com/blog/famous-mit-team-membersBBC News: https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-27519748Esquire: https://www.esquire.com/entertainment/tv/a37016468/heather-tallchief-roberto-solis-heist-netflix-now/NBC: https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna9766179Boston Magazine: https://www.bostonmagazine.com/arts-entertainment/2019/06/21/mit-blackjack-team/NY Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/16/us/fugitive-in-armored-car-theft-gives-up-after-12-years.htmlNew Scientist: https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg21428644-500-roulette-beater-spills-physics-behind-victory/Science Alert: https://www.sciencealert.com/a-physicist-has-built-a-machine-that-can-beat-the-odds-at-rouletteJustice.gov: https://www.justice.gov/archive/usao/nv/news/2006/03302006.htmlhttp://www.richardmunchkin.com/2011/08/my-interview-with-john-laurie-c-mit.htmlNewsweek: https://www.newsweek.com/heist-netflix-heather-tallchief-roberto-solis-true-story-facts-documentary-1610361Follow us, campers!Patreon (join to get all episodes ad-free, at least a day early, an extra episode a month, and a free sticker!): https://patreon.com/TrueCrimeCampfirehttps://www.truecrimecampfirepod.com/Facebook: True Crime CampfireInstagram: https://gramha.net/profile/truecrimecampfire/19093397079Twitter: @TCCampfire https://twitter.com/TCCampfireEmail: truecrimecampfirepod@gmail.comMERCH! https://true-crime-campfire.myspreadshop.com
