Daniel Ellenberg is the president of Relationships That Work – an organization that supports people to create more emotionally intelligent personal relationships – and vice president of the Rewire Leadership Institute, an organization that helps individuals, teams and organizations thrive in the business world. He is also the founder and director of Strength with Heart men's groups and workshops, and co-author of Lovers for Life: Creating Lasting Passion, Trust and True Partnership, which he co-wrote with his wife, Judith Bell. He has spent over 10,000 hours facilitating groups and workshops over the last quarter century and wrote his Ph.D. dissertation on how men can experience greater inner strength and positive relationships by transcending limited aspects of traditional male roles. To start the conversation, Casey asks about Daniel's background, including the organizations that he has founded/been part of.  Josh asks about his original motivations for getting into the field. Daniel's responses on compassion cause Casey to ask why men were never taught how to be compassionate before Josh asks about the origins of masculinity. Moving forward, Casey asks Daniel for a mental tool guide that men can use before and Josh asks about why we have an abundance of therapists but not life coaches and the differences between life coaching and therapy. Next, Casey asks about the value of men's groups. Daniel describes the experiences he has seen personally. Josh questions why society has pushed masculinity onto men. To wrap things up, Casey asks Daniel about the loneliness epidemic and what we can do to stop it. Lastly, Josh asks about fixing the educational/parental system so that the next generation of men do not face the same woes of the current one.Timestamps:0:00 - Intro0:50 - Daniel's Background3:50 - Daniel's motivation for starting/joining orgs6:22 - Why haven't men learned compassion?10:02 - Origins of masculinity17:55 - Success tools for men25:05 - Life coaching vs. therapy30:40 - Value of men's groups35:18 - Key practices for men's mental health38:20 - Societal causes of masculinity46:00 - The loneliness epidemic51:00 - Fixing the next generation of men________________________________Full, video episodes available on YouTube (@SharedExps)! What defines us?   With all the messages we receive daily, admonishing us to be or do something, what is the common thread through which all of us are interwoven?   Returning to The Self Help Antidote for yet another fascinating and provocative conversation is Daniel Ellenberg PhD, a leadership coach, licensed therapist, organizational trainer and executive advisor.   Dr. Ellenberg is the president of Relationships That Work – an organization that supports people to create more emotionally intelligent personal relationships.  He is the Vice President of the Rewire Leadership Institute, an organization that helps individuals, teams and organizations thrive in the business world.   He is the co-author of Lovers for Life: Creating Lasting Passion, Trust and True Partnership, and served as President of the American Psychological Associations Division 51: Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinities.   In this episode we discuss the different archetypes and roles we play in society and why Dr. Ellenberg believes that many of the masculine and feminine traits we exhibit are less about gender classifications and more about human attributes that help us understand ourselves and one another.   We discuss how each of our traits yield advantages and liabilities.  What are the shared facets of life that unite us?  And, why the key to resilience lies in part with our ability to remain flexible in life, expressing ourselves authentically.   Dr. Daniel Ellenberg can be contacted at:Daniel@rewireleadership.com Or visit:www.Strengthwithheart.com

Co-founders of Integris Performance Advisors, a firm specializing in employee engagement and efficiency, Brett and Evan tackle the topics that all organizations grapple with daily. They also provide valuable insight and resources that help teams boost morale and increase productivity. Takeaways: The “people problem” is our struggle to work effectively with others in the workplace. We must first become self-aware, and then we can seek to understand our colleagues’ perspectives, approaches, strengths, and habits. Soft skills like empathy, resilience, and the ability to work with a team are critical in today’s changing workforce. Specific language is needed to effectively talk about emotional intelligence --- with common terminology, we can understand each other. When feedback becomes an expectation, real growth can begin. In relationships that kind of mindfulness allows us to use the 10% in ways that make a difference for the 90% that may not have been what we wanted. Watch or listen to this 4th of our 6 weeks on Relationships That Work to learn what can make that 10% powerful instead of powerless.

In our important relationships at home and at work, we need to respect the needs of others while also sticking up for our own. But that’s often easier said than done. Dr. Daniel Ellenberg joins us today to explore how we can grow the lasting inner resources that allow us to do just that, and ultimately become both “friendly” and “fearless.”Daniel has been a practicing marriage and family therapist for over 30 years, and is the co-founder of Relationships That Work, and the founder and director of Strength With Heart men’s groups. He’s led workshops at the Esalen Institute, Spirit Rock, the Association of Humanistic Psychology, Stanford University, and, of all places, NASA, and is the co-author of Lovers for Life: Creating Lasting Passion, Trust, and True Partnership.Key Topics:Understanding bravery as “fearing less” rather than becoming truly “fearless.”Increasingly moving toward “responding” rather than “reacting,” and expanding the space between stimulus and response, by calming the physical fears that arise in interpersonal situations.Developing both inter- and intra-personal skills for effective relating.Rick and Daniel are teaching a one-day workshop dedicated to the topic of “Friendly and Fearless” on February 21st through the Greater Good Science Center at UC Berkeley.  If you aren't in the area, the event will be live streamed, and you can watch it from anywhere in the world. Follow the link to learn more. We're now on Patreon! #055: When we get married or vow to take another in our lives, we are committing to them, not the extension of their family. An extended family is one that goes beyond the nuclear family, consisting of parents, in-laws, aunts, uncles, grandparents, cousins, nieces and nephews. While we are not necessarily committing to the extended family of our partner, accepting the family you marry into (and your own) is an important step in moving forward in a conscious way. Listen in for some wonderful tips in navigating these extensions.

The second one is a really good deep question that takes me to a new understanding of relationships. I met Douglas when I was 16 years old and new to Athens, GA. The stories he invokes involve our adventure to another state unbeknownst to our parents, and then why does a relationship on paper that is so out of sorts actually not only works in real life but thrives and is amazing? If you have ever wondered about relationships or just enjoy a great story - this episode is for you. I tell stories so to be blatantly honest if you want to know the answer to the question then hit play. Here you will get metal attitude, high energy humor, and unbridled honesty. Tonight I am having a conversation with Hassan Perez a Teacher who is single and based in Miami, Florida. Hassan is a Cuban, Muslim, he shared the following thoughts with me…. As per the theme we are going to discuss and explore I want to share with you Ebony some of my comments from a discussion a Muslim sister initiated with her connections on the book of faces today.   She asked folks what their thoughts are on friendship as a key building block for marriage and the following is what I offered: Many cases boil down to - here's that important concept again - INTENTION. Are you entering into a relationship to have someone to wait on you and serve you? Are you pursuing someone for sex? Or are you looking for a companion that you can share lives with, the tears and giggles, the labour and leisure, the highs and lows, the joy and pain, the warm sunlight and the pouring rain, the good and bad, the hopes and fears, the hopes and regrets as well as the innermost secrets? Those seeking to find and be in an intimate and blessed relationship with the best of friends work towards the latter and, subsequently, are not caught up in the former. My questions are… Why do things sometimes get all weird when we change a friendship into a relationship? What’s your experience when dating friends? Do friends turn into great lovers, husbands or wives? Join the conversation 3479457556 prefix with your local dialling code. Or comment and put any questions in the chat room. See you at the top of the hour!! Connect with Ebony @ www.ebonyempresstv.com
