Let's be real: Middle school is tough. Whether you're the parent of a tween or having flashbacks to 7th grade, almost all of us can relate to the trickiness of pre-teen years. Body changes, hormones, first crushes, rejection, bullying, friend drama… There's a lot going on. How can we support our kids (and ourselves) through the trials of tweendom? That's the question Dr. Becky discusses with this week's guest, award-winning young adult author and radio producer Hillary Frank. Inspired by Hillary's latest project, a fictional podcast about middle school called Here Lies Me, the two talk about difficult peer dynamics and the foundational skills kids need to navigate issues like consent, harassment, and belonging. Their conversation emphasizes the importance of talking to our kids about tricky topics—even before they enter the tween years—and empowers you with practical strategies and scripts to have those conversations. Good Kids: How Not to Raise an A**hole

Hillary Frank, author and host of the award-winning parenting podcast The Longest Shortest Time, takes us on a journey to the wonderful world of weird parenting. You won't find any of these tips in a traditional parenting book. Instead, Hillary says, weird parenting is real advice from real parents born out of moments of sheer desperation. “One of my favorites is a game called ‘What's on My Butt?' You lie down face-down on the couch or on the floor, and then you tell them to get some random object and place it on your butt. And then you have to guess what the thing is and the longer it takes you to guess, the longer you get to lie down.” You can follow Hillary Frank on Twitter @hillaryfrank and on Instagram @thisishillaryfrank.  Support the show by checking out our sponsors! Hillary Frank says middle school can be brutal. The bullying, the harassment, the homophobia, the racism, the sexism... it's all there, along with the complicated emotions of pre-teens. "Here Lies Me," a podcast Hillary wrote, directed, and produced, tackles it all and then some. Hillary lays out what made this podcast one of the best of last year — and maybe this year, too.

When you think back to your own middle school experience: do you cringe? In her latest creative project, author and podcaster Hillary Frank goes deep into the discomforts of middle school. Her audio drama, Here Lies Me, centers on an eighth grade girl confronting issues of harassment, bullying, all-around awkwardness, and the loss of her childhood. Hillary first conceived of the story some 15 years ago, long before she was a parent herself. But she only brought it to life as a fiction podcast last year – coincidentally at the same time that her own daughter entered middle school. We talk with Hillary about how she immersed herself in what truly goes down in the eighth grade, and how that has – and has not – prepared her for this stage of parenting. And,  that's clearly how it feels to 13-year-old Here Lies Me main character, Noa—a shy and witty misfit who endures the horrors of living in an affluent New England town with a dark side. It's the first day of eighth grade, and The Olivias are already icing her out. Here's Hillary Frank and her summary of the show, telling us in her voice, and voices: Here Lies Me from Lemonada Media is the first scripted podcast to convey the adolescent experience with realism. Another quick clip with the talented hilarious voices, and God's voice over the intercom, with Noa's hilarious response.   Here Lies Me contains themes of harassment, classism, sexism, racism, trauma, consent, and finding your voice.  Here's our final clip from Here Lies Me, which takes place in the cafeteria.  Listen closely to the music track of the clip, as well as all the music in today's show, which is scored by Hilary Frank's daughter in real life…great stuff. Parenting is far from easy and Hillary Frank, author and host of The Longest Shortest Time Podcast, wants parents to know they are not alone. After realizing that there were no resources where parents could commiserate in a real way and truly discuss the difficulties of parenthood, she created The Longest Shortest Time Podcast. In her podcast she talks to parents from all backgrounds with varying parenting styles and debunks some of the portrayals of parenthood often influenced by mainstream media. In this episode, Hillary sits down with Kristy to discuss the reality of childbirth and parenting, changing the idea of the ideal worker and injecting humor into the conversation surrounding parenthood.

Hillary Frank got into radio by breaking the rules, using a boombox and an answering machine to produce a segment for This American Life. She is the host of the leading parenting podcast The Longest Shortest Time, which joined Earwolf in January 2016. On this episode of The Wolf Den Hillary tells Adam the This American Life story, and explains how working as a freelance radio producer and a difficult child birth led her to create her podcast. They discuss how her expectations shifted as the podcast became successful in its own right, and why Hillary decided to bring The Longest Shortest Time to Earwolf. Finally, Hillary offers some trenchant and unconventional advice for aspiring podcasters.

Should You Post Pictures of Your Kids Online?

This is the latest installment of "Question of Note," in which we take a listener's question — your question! — and find just the right the person (or in this case... people) to answer it. See them all here as we go along. Got a Question of Note you'd like answered? Email notetoself@wnyc.org with a voice memo. Here's how to record one.  There is a child among us who will live to be 150 years old. When this kid celebrates his centennial and a half, how is he going to feel about the picture you just posted of today's playground disaster?  This week's question comes from a father whose social media profiles are covered in photos of his kid: "I was wondering if it's right of me to just blindly post pic after pic of my 3-year-old's entire life all over social media. Should I start deleting every pic until he's old enough to give consent? Or is this just what it's like to grow up in a digital world?" — Judd Wachstein, Atlanta, Georgia According to the Pew Research Center, 92 percent of children in the U.S. have a digital presence by the time they turn two. But a University of Michigan poll earlier this year found that three-fourths of parents think that another parent has shared too much information about their child online. So no matter what we do, there are some very strong opinions out there. We put three people with very different philosophies together for a conversation about ethics, photography, and the struggle of weighing future consequences in a world just can't picture yet (no pun intended). Take a listen and see who you agree with the most: Note to Self Host Manoush Zomorodi, who posts nothing. Note to Self Executive Producer Jen Poyant who posts every day on Instagram. Longest Shortest Time Host Hillary Frank, who posts drawings and side-angles but no faces. Oh, and take our poll? You can listen to Hillary's excellent show, The Longest Shortest Time, anywhere you get your podcasts on through their spiffy new app (which is also where many of the listener voices on this show came from). We're also pretty in love with the Longest Shortest Time Mamas group, a Facebook community and safe space for mothers to share their *real* experience of promulgating the human race. There's one for Papas too. And as always, subscribe to Note to Self on iTunes, Stitcher, TuneIn, I Heart Radio, or anywhere else using our RSS feed.
