John Wilson's guest is the violinist Nigel Kennedy. A prodigy whose childhood talents were nurtured by Yehudi Menuhin, one of the greatest violinist of the 20th century, Kennedy himself became an international star in 1989 with his recording of Vivaldi's Four Seasons. It sold over three million copies, topping the UK classical charts for a year and went on to be listed as the biggest selling classical album of all time in the Guinness Book Of Records. An unconventional classical musician from the outset, it wasn't just his wardrobe, accent and attitude that set him apart. As well as recording all the major violin concertos, his repertoire includes jazz standards, folk tunes and Jimi Hendrix. He remains one of the world's greatest virtuosos. For This Cultural Life, Nigel chooses his two violinist mentors; Yehudi Menuhin and the French musician Stéphane Grappelli with whom he shared a love of jazz and improvisation. Going to New York to study at the prestigious Juilliard School also proved a turning point for Kennedy, not so much for the teaching he received there, but for the legendary jazz musicians like Jimmy Rowles and Ellis Larkins that he sought out in clubs downtown and in Harlem. Nigel also discusses how being a fan of Aston Villa football club has made him think about crowd dynamics in his concerts and reveals the influence of his dog Huxley on his approach to his career. Nigel Kennedy remains the best selling violinist of all time with a repertoire that spans jazz, classical, rock, klezmer and more. Ahead of his four night residency at Ronnie Scott's in London this week, Nigel Kennedy and cellist Beata Urbanek-Kalinowska join us in the Front Row studio to perform two reworkings of pieces by Ryuichi Sakamoto and the Polish film score composer, Krzysztof Komeda. Author Christine Coulson discusses her novel ‘One Woman Show' written entirely through the medium of art gallery labels – and why we should be looking for longer at the paintings themselves. She's joined by Dr Catherine McCormack, an independent curator and lecturer at Sotheby's Art Institute, who reveals more about how labels have changed over the years and provide valuable context for visitors to galleries and museums. New figures compiled exclusively for Front Row reveal that 65,000 items are currently missing from museums around the world and listed on the Art Loss Register. Carolyn Atkinson goes on the trail of one of those missing artworks, a painting stolen during a brazen art heist in 1989, that has just been returned to a Glasgow museum. A few weeks ago, violinist Nigel Kennedy was quoted as saying that today's young musicians are more "clone-like," noting that while so many have phenomenal technical fluency, this may have come at the expense of musical communication. This was in the context of a larger (and intriguing) conversation about how funding in music is distributed, and how this might be part of the issue, but regardless, I was curious to see if there might be any studies on this particular issue.Though I didn't find any data on this in the realm of classical music, I did find a 2012 study that explored this in the context of popular music. Which had some pretty interesting findings that I suspect could be related to classical music as well.Click below for all the nerdy details, and how this could be related to your daily practice: Are Today's Musicians More “Clone-Like?"====Have you been feeling a little stuck or stagnant in the practice room? Or has performance anxiety been a nagging issue that hasn't gotten any better, no matter how prepared you feel before performances, auditions, or even lessons for that matter? If you've been wanting to experience more joy in the practice room and play more like yourself on stage, but haven't been quite sure how to make that happen, starting October 15th, 2023, I'll be teaching a live, online, 4-week class on the most essential mental skills and practice strategies that can make a difference in your practicing and performing. We'll meet once a week via Zoom and explore the relevant research in four essential areas, experiment with a curated set of exercises and techniques together as a group, and to make sure the ideas become consistent habits, I'll show you how to gently integrate these new skills into your (or your students') daily practice through bite-sized practice challenges alongside a supportive group of practice buddies from around the world. Registration begins next week - Sunday, October 1st, and runs through Monday, October 9th. Over 1000 musicians, educators, and students and learners of all ages have participated in the course to date. Zi Lan Liao is one of the leading exponents of Chinese music. Her busy career on the international concert circuit, has resulted in her being one of the most widely heard and best appreciated performers on the Gu-Zheng worldwide. The Gu-Zheng is a twenty one string, harp like instrument established across thousands of years of Chinese Dynastic tradition. She began to learn the Gu-Zheng at the age of three when she lived in Guangzhou. By the age of nine she was winning major prizes in China, including the prestigious National Youth Music Competition. By the time she left China for the UK at the age of fifteen, her reputation as a virtuoso performer was already established. She made an immediate impact on her arrival in the UK, by winning at the International Eisteddfod in Llangollen. She continued her music studies at Chetham's School of Music and the Royal Academy of Music, where she also specialised in the western concert harp, besides the traditional Chinese Gu-Zheng. Zi Lan has captivated audiences around the world as a soloist with leading orchestras, as a recitalist and through the joyous enthusiasm of her incredible musical workshops. She recorded music for the Oscar-winning film “The Last Emperor”; she has collaborated with Peter Gabriel, Nigel Kennedy, Jah Wobble and other internationally known recording artists. Zi Lan has appeared at most of the major concert venues in the UK, including the Edinburgh, Aldeburgh and World Harp Festivals. In 2010, she performed with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra again, this time in Liverpool and at the Shanghai World Expo, playing on the new composition ‘Oxbow' written by Ian Stephens. Zi Lan is deeply committed to making the music of her native country more well known in the West, and a desire to share her insight into its cultural and spiritual significance. Despite her busy performing schedule Zi Lan still finds time to assist the Pagoda Chinese Youth Orchestra and Dance Group in Liverpool, both as musician and choreographer. Jah Wobble first worked with the Pagoda Chinese Youth Orchestra in 2008, and his album Chinese Dub won Songlines' Best Cross Culture Album award in 2009. His work left a legacy for the youngsters at the time and inspired them to discover new fusions of Chinese music, with other modern genres. There is a ‘Celebration of Legacy Concert', at the Tung Auditorium in Liverpool, on Saturday 15th July. The concert is a part of a wider series from Pagoda Chinese Youth Orchestra, marking their 40th anniversary with friends and supporters throughout the years. This concert will see Jah Wobble and his band performing with Tian, a band featuring his sons, John and Charlie, themselves two past alumni of the youth orchestra, showcasing the exciting new development of Chinese and Western fusion music.

Synopsis A new opera by Jules Massenet had its premiere at the Paris Opera on today's date in 1894. It was titled Thais and was based on a rather spicy novel of the same name by the popular French author of the day, Anatole France. The novel and the opera are based on an old seventh-century manuscript, which mentions a fabulously beautiful Egyptian courtesan named Thais who converted to Christianity and spent the rest of her life meditating in seclusion on matters spiritual. In Massenet's opera, the conversion from strip-tease artiste to nun is depicted by an instrumental interlude, the famous Meditation from Thais, which has become a favorite showpiece for solo violinists. To add a dash of the piquant to the tale, in both the novel by Anatole France and in the opera by Massenet, the young monk who diligently convinces Thais to change her wicked ways suddenly falls madly in love with her himself, and just as diligently tries to persuade her to add just one more name—his—to her list of satisfied customers. As they used to say in ancient Egypt: "Ooh-la-la!" Music Played in Today's Program Jules Massenet (1842 - 1912) Meditation, fr Thaïs Nigel Kennedy, violin; English Chamber Orchestra EMI 57330

Ep.K358: Fashion, fabrics and fishtails: Why we need to talk about what female classical performers wear Discussing clothing is something of a taboo in classical music, for performers as much as critics. “Most musicians don't feel like they can talk about it,” says Jocelyn Lightfoot, managing director of the London Chamber Orchestra. There is the entrenched idea that classical musicians are supposed to be heard and not seen. In this performance ideal, the performer's personality — expressed through his or her choice of clothing — is excised, deferring to “the music itself”. Those musicians who step outside the norm in their clothing choices have, accordingly, been subject to severe criticism. But at least part of the controversy surrounding artists like violinist Nigel Kennedy, with his jeans and spiky hair, is that they remind us that live music is a visual medium. We don't just hear — we see musicians performing. For women, the stakes of their clothing choices are considerably higher because women are more frequently sexualized than their male counterparts. While Kennedy's informal clothes were criticized by some as “ludicrous,” the furore around pianist Yuja Wang betrays this double standard. As much ink has been spilt over Wang's hemlines as her playing – and with a couple of exceptions, commentary has focused on how “short and tight” her dresses are. The problem isn't that critics are talking about Wang's clothes. It's that by viewing everything she wears through a sexualized lens, they're presenting her as a sexual object first and an artist second. There is no room in this worldview for women's clothes to be both an artistic and personal choice. Perhaps part of the issue is that fashion lies outside the traditional classical critic's toolkit. The inability to talk about Wang's clothing in a sensitive and respectful way reveals damaging and longstanding assumptions around women and their dress on the classical stage. The notion that what we see might “distract from” music, rather than shape our experience of it, stems from a centuries-old division of body and mind, physicality and rationality, that claims classical music as purely cerebral stuff. The body has no place here. And this idea is gendered. Rationality and the mind have historically been coded masculine, sensuality and the body feminine, with the result that women and their bodies have been marginalized within classical music. The denial of Wang's agency also feeds into racist stereotypes around the submissiveness and inexpressiveness of both women and classical musicians of Asian descent — stereotypes that Wang's clothing choices actively disrupt. We need to find ways of talking about women's clothes that respect them as artistic choices, and integral to performance. Dress is becoming more important as questions around diversity and inclusion are pushed to the forefront of institutions' agendas. The London Chamber Orchestra, for example, has recently removed the dress code for its players. Dispensing with the heavily gendered expectations of black tie is partly, Lightfoot says, to celebrate the individuality of the orchestra's players and build an inclusive space for musicians whose “way of expressing themselves physically doesn't fit with that classical music stereotype.” But it's also to create a “mirror between the audience and orchestra,” reaching out to those “who don't feel welcome in a concert hall.” Moreover, social media has made classical music “so much more visual” says Maxine Kwok, a violinist in the London Symphony Orchestra. Orchestras and soloists alike are now attuned to the branding possibilities it offers, from sharing clips of concerts to photographs of rehearsals in jeans and jumpers. And this can, perhaps, be a way of making musicians more accessible.
“Better Come on in my Kitchen” sang Blues-Übervater Robert Johnson.

Today, I'm interviewing my friend Owen Ó Súilleabháin who is a coach, performer, and a whole lot more. We're discussing how he uses his experiences as a performer and his understanding of the arts and psychology, and philosophy, and bringing them together into his private coaching practice. How he uses his gifts with high-level CEOs, folks who have achieved incredible success and are looking at bringing their organization to the next level. They team up with Owen as their coach to ask questions that really provoke creativity and self-understanding and create new possibilities. Enjoy. Owen shares with us his insights: That's where it comes from. It comes from this like real curiosity that I have. I want to talk to people who are leaders in their field. And, fascinating is every single person in the world is an expert in something. Every single person is an expert in their own life. And so, actually, I have a question for every single person I'd be. Obviously, there's some people who are world leaders in their fields and luckily, I've come across these people, so I can go hang on. I've got some questions for you, and I want some answers. And that type of framing, I think is the beginning of what can be described as leadership coaching -curiosity, openness, and the openness to a sense of truth, telling… And in talking, as we all know, you overhear yourself saying, sometimes very profound things in conversation with another person. You can't do the same thing talking to yourself. But another person is in the room, this heightened sense of interactive infinite complexity, the spectral reality occurs. This third thing happens that cannot be accessed on your own. It just doesn't exist. So you need another person to be in conversation - active, energetic, listening, responsive, intelligent, sacred, safe conversation. And when you have that and when you throw kind of, you know, metaphor on the table, like a Kaleidoscope is a metaphor, even the shockers are actually a metaphor, you know. And when you throw the metaphor on the table, the art, it becomes symbolic it becomes this third thing. When you talk about this third thing, you're actually talking about yourself. You're not talking about the shockers at all. You're not talking about a Kaleidoscope. You're not talking about joining the dots. You're talking about yourself. So art is really just a metaphor. It's a way to access the inner theater, the inner drama that's occurred in your life, which is quite difficult to speak of directly. And also it's impossible to speak of something in its entirety because the reality of life is complexity that's why you can interpret a piece of art in as many ways as you want. And it's the same is true in life. Life can be interpreted at different times and from different perspectives in different ways. So it's really just about like dynamic real fun conversation. And what happens then is after our chat, after our talk, I actually take notes as well, while I speak with my clients, I take; I'm a fast hyper and I enjoy taking notes and listening to the words that people use. Afterwards, then I will send you the notes from the call you know, for you to reflect on person. And you'll see words that you didn't realize, you were using. You probably didn't realize you use the word Kaleidoscope and I'll show you and I'll say you check out this word. And just by having these conversations you stand up slightly in a different posture. Your bearing your connection with the world is just ever so slightly shifted like having going to the gym, you know. You work out on a certain muscle and you don't notice it instantly growing. But over a period of time, you're bearing your position, the way you hold yourself in the world starts to shift. And when you do that, the world comes to meet you in a new way and that's a very simple thing. If you're grimacing and sort of hunched in your body, people are not, people are going to leave you alone. If you're sort of more receptive and open in your body, the world is going to come to meet you in a certain way. So that's what happens in this coaching work, working with the arts. Your body shifts and you embody your world yourself in a different way. And the world comes to meet you in a different way. Owen Ó Súilleabháin lives the belief that art has the power to awaken the most dynamic and creative aspects of ourselves in the world, regardless of whether or not we identify as “artists.” He's a singer, composer, and a teacher who has collaborated with world-class artists including Steven Spielberg, Russell Crowe, Nigel Kennedy, the Chieftains, and David Whyte. He's usually found working alongside his brother, Mícheál, and his mother, Nóirín. Together the trio co-founded the Dámh Imeall — translation: the (h)Edge School — rooted in an ancient tradition of hedge schooling that emerged under the brutal repression of British rule in Ireland.Owen invites us to make contact with ourselves, our origins, and our unassailable place in the world when we feel isolated, lonely, or alienated. To recognize that there is always a home for us to come back to.Get Connected:The Wonder Dome Newsletter http://bit.ly/3dTfdPiFollow Andy on Twitter http://twitter.com/cahillaguerillaFollow us on Instagram http://instagram.com/thewonderdomepodLike us on Facebook http://facebook.com/mindfulcreative.coachConnect with Owen:owenandmoley.comturasdanam.comfacebook.com/owenandmichealtwitter.com/owenmoleyinstagram.com/irishbrothersyoutube.com/user/size2shoesofficial

Twin Cities-based artist Pavielle French first joined Garrett and Scott in season one as her career was beginning to bloom. She returns to TRILLOQUY this week to talk about her new album, SOVEREIGN, which explores Black rejection of white supremacy, a renewed view of "classic" music and a message: "You cannot give me my rights". She also speaks with Garrett about her collaborations with local orchestras, and its context in the fight for racial equity in arts spaces. Scott highlights #GayCarmen, and Garrett addresses the rejection of a Jimi Hendrix composition from an English orchestral space. The guys close by affirming the humanity of Haitian immigrants and urging arts programmers to do what they can, artistically and otherwise. Paula interviews world-renowned jazz guitarist and bassist, Fred Thelonius Baker. Fred was a student at Birmingham School of Music (now Royal Birmingham Conservatoire) from 1979, and studied composition with Andrew Downes. Andrew went on to invite Fred to teach at Birmingham Conservatoire in 1989, which led to Fred being a major part of Andrew's new School of Composition and Creative Studies from the early 90s. Fred has been a permanent teacher/lecturer in accoustic and bass guitar there ever since. In the mid 90s, Andrew composed his Concerto for Guitar, Electric Bass Guitar and Strings for Fred playing Electric Bass with Simon Dinnigan playing Acoustic Guitar.
