The story is too common in our society today.  Prohibition has destroyed lives and killed people, both from lack of access for medical purposes, and from filling prisons. Cannabis; medical, recreational, argicultural, should not be prohibited from complete access in our society. The National Clean Water Collective arrived in Flint, Michigan Thursday evening, joining the residents of River Park apartments for Thanksgiving Dinner, followed by arts and crafts for the kids that the Collective provided. The following day, November 25th, the Collective hosted a community feast and panel discussion at Canaan Baptist Church. Over fifty residents attended the panel discussion moderated by Director of Activist with the Solutions Institute, Anita MonCrief. Topics discussed by the panel ranged from infrastructure and water content to personal stories and community organizing. Panelists included local grassroots activists and organizers like Melissa Mays and Gina Luster, Business Manager of the Plumbers Union, Harold Harrington, and University of Michigan professor Dr. Suzanne Selig. Representatives of the National Clean Water Collective, MissionFlint and SI, joined one another at the Non-Profit Community Center Piece of the Rock Foundation and participated in an activist training workshop also taught by Anita Moncrief. Then the coalition went out and delivered much needed water to the residents of Flint. George Mallinckrodt's primary objective is to elevate Darren Rainey's story to the national level to expose not only what happens in Florida to the severely mentally ill, but to also begin a dialogue regarding the 20% of severely mentally ill in all prisons and jails in the U.S. June 23rd 2012 Darren Rainey was forced into a shower by officers at Dade Correctional Institution and left there, under a blistering spray of scalding water, for nearly two hours. Rainey screamed and begged to be let out of the small stall before finally collapsing in a heap, his skin peeling. Since Rainey's death, it was discovered that he and other mentally ill inmates at the prison had been tortured, beaten, starved and left to sleep in their own excrement. While Rainey's death has led to some reforms in the treatment of the mentally ill in Florida prisons, the prison system remains dangerously understaffed and rife with violence, as evidenced by recent riots and turmoil at Franklin Correctional Institution in north-central Florida. George joins me this morning to discuss the injustices on the mentally Ill in our criminal justice system and what to do to top it.
