The legend himself Jack Douglas (1945-2026) shares stories from five decades of rock history — from producing John Lennon's final album to the memories Aerosmith, Cheap Trick, The Who, and his recent production of Silverplanes. Topics Include: Jack Douglas joins Nate from a snowy driveway, cigar in hand. Silverplanes' debut album Airbus is finally releasing after years of delays. Jack met Silverplanes' Aaron Smart through his college-age son. Aaron turned out to own the Sunset Boulevard studio Jack had worked in. Jeff Emerick mixed the album shortly before his sudden death in 2018. The pandemic added two more years of delay to the release. Jack and Aaron are now label partners with New York real estate billionaire Douglas Durst. Their label operates 50/50 with artists — no standard royalty deals. Signed artists include Robin Taylor Zander and the Detroit Youth Choir. Jack builds songs from a single acoustic guitar performance first. Aerosmith was different — built from the band groove up, lyrics last. Walk This Way had no lyric until a Young Frankenstein gag unlocked it. Jack started his career as a TV composer while janitoring at Record Plant. He worked on sessions that became The Who's Who's Next. Kit Lambert and Keith Moon were both, politely, out of their minds. Jack survived eccentric clients by being reliably sober and crazy simultaneously. John Lennon was the easiest artist Jack ever worked with. John would say: "I'm the artist, you're the producer — let's work like that." Jack engineered Imagine and stayed close to Lennon through the Lost Weekend years. He was in and out of the Fame sessions with Lennon and Bowie. John told Bowie: "I'm writing you the best hit you'll ever have." John knew about — and liked — Aerosmith's cover of "Come Together." George Martin gave Jack a flat in Kensington and a Morgan sportscar. Jack helped produce Ringo's "Grow Old With Me," hiding Here Comes the Sun in the strings. Double Fantasy was secretly recorded at Hit Factory, too far west for fans. John wanted a middle-of-the-road record aimed at people aged 28 to 40. Earl Slick was kept from rehearsals deliberately — a wildcard for fresh solos. Rick Nielsen discovered John's Shea Stadium Rickenbacker with the setlist still taped on. Rick later gifted John a custom all-white Rickenbacker, model 001, never cashed his check. Cheap Trick's "I'm Losing You" session was thrilling but too edgy for the album. Jack hid microphones throughout the sessions, gifting John cassettes on his birthday. Jack destroyed the tape of the last day — John had sworn him to secrecy. After John's murder, Jack and Yoko listened to vault tapes alone until dawn. Yoko later sued Jack; Phil Spector's incoherent testimony and a wig mishap followed. Jann Wenner called Jack a nobody — until Jack's lawyer read Wenner's own book aloud. The jury was out ten minutes. Jack won millions. The 2010 Stripped Down version was mixed in the exact same Record Plant room. Live at Budokan was actually Osaka — Budokan tapes were too poorly recorded. Jack rebuilt the Osaka drum kit using speaker-driven bass frequencies and filtered signals. Aerosmith's Live Bootleg was sent back to Sony unchanged after Jack faked a remix session. One malicious YouTube channel. Real financial damages. A clear warning shot from a major label. We kick things off by reacting to SM Entertainment's lawsuit win against Sojang for defamation tied to EXO, Red Velvet, and aespa, and why it feels like the industry is finally drawing a harder line on harassment, rage bait, and targeted personal attacks. If you've ever wondered what “artist protection” looks like when it leaves the press release stage and hits the courtroom, we talk through the stakes in plain terms. Then we jump across to Japan for a run of updates that are all about live music momentum. T.N.T, led by Yuya Tegoshi, lands a Nippon Budokan debut concert, and we unpack why Budokan carries legendary status for rock and pop artists. We also get into SixTONES announcing a stadium tour schedule, plus Number_i hosting fan meeting events with strict fan club rules. If you follow J-pop tours, ticketing systems, and venue milestones, this stretch is packed with practical context. We also slow down to flag something every fan should take seriously: scam listings and fake livestream pages. With Arashi-related warnings making the rounds, we share a simple mindset for staying safe online by sticking to official sources. From there, we hit more headlines, including Jesse joining a Keroro Gunso anime film, the messy NewJeans and ADOR legal fight with asset freezes and legal team shakeups, KATSEYE canceling a Music Bank appearance, and YG's updates on BABYMONSTER plus future group plans. And because we are us, we close with a story about BLOODYWOOD, a shout to Diljit Dosanjh, and how music can sneak into your subconscious and come out as a wildly vivid dream.Subscribe for more music news, share this with a friend who lives for pop culture headlines, and leave us a review if our rambles keep you company. What happens when a record label shelves a band's most ambitious studio work to capitalize on a surprise live hit? On this episode, we explore this unique moment in rock history and analyze "Dream Police" by Cheap Trick -- the title track of the album that sat on a shelf for nine months while Cheap Trick at Budokan conquered the world. We'll step through the song's complex architecture, revealing how Rick Nielsen combined lyrics of paranoia with a hard-rocking guitar riff and a heavily orchestrated, at times "horror-movie" vibe. The episode goes beyond the surface, isolating the tricky guitar melodies, the pre-chorus drama, and the disorienting shift in time signatures. You will gain a new appreciation for the technical prowess of Robin Zander's vocals, Tom Petersson's 12-string bass, and Bun E. Carlos's Moon-esque drumming. Whether you're a lifelong fan or a newcomer to the "hardest working band in show business," this episode illustrates why "Dream Police" remains an inescapable classic and a testament to the band's survival and creativity. 2003 Was a huge year for Pearl Jam that set up the template for what their live shows were going to look like moving forward from that point. This included longer shows, multiple surprises per night and a sonic display that kept pushing the boundaries of each and every one of their talents. While shows from State College, Madison Square Garden, Mansfield and Benaroya Hall dominate the conversation from this tour year, the show that we'll be covering for our Chronology Series is from the famed Budokan venue in Tokyo. The band is re-releasing this bootleg in tandem with Eddie's upcoming solo tour of Japan, so it was the perfect time to get back and investigate a pretty unique show and crowd from the far east. We've become so accustomed to Pearl Jam crowds from South America, Europe and the United States bringing their a-game every night, singing and bouncing along to every song in the pit that any time where this doesn't happen at a show can seem like an outlier. The Japanese crowds intake their concerts a little differently. The respectful crowd is engaged with the show, but are much more reserved than the normal concert goer. We'll analyze it in this episode as two major Pearl Jam singalongs, Better Man and Elderly Woman, do not have the same kind of flair as they normally do. We'll also get into 2003 being a heavily political year for Pearl Jam and how the satire of the Bu$hleaguer performances that mocked the former President were their way of expressing art, and we get to hear perhaps the most perfect attempt at Lukin that exists in the band's catalog! In a brief, yet explosive, four-year period, KISS transformed from a struggling New York City club band into a global phenomenon. Fresh off the success of a People's Choice Award (“Beth”) and rigorous touring cycles (including a series of record-breaking shows at Budokan), the band's larger-than-life aesthetic and stadium-shaking sound were fully realized by 1977. The commercial and pop-culture dominance of KISS was further cemented with the release of their platinum-selling 6th album, Love Gun.Produced by the iconic Eddie Kramer (Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, The Rolling Stones), Love Gun captures the personas of all four members with riff-heavy jams like “I Stole Your Love” and “Shock Me,” the bonafide hard rock anthems like “Love Gun,” and even ‘60s inspired R&B tracks like “Tomorrow and Tonight” and “Then She Kissed Me.”Joining us this week is legendary Rwake vocalist and KISS superfan, Christoper Terry, for a deep into the band and their rock 'n' roll opus!Follow RwakeFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/RwakeBand/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rwakeband/?hl=enFollow Riff WorshipInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/riffworshippod/Twitter: https://x.com/RiffWorshipPodYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@RiffWorshipPodCheck out our Official Playlists:Riffs on Repeat (Spotify)Riffs on Repeat (YouTube Music)Hits from the Crypt (Apple)

Amy Chavez opens the show by asking Friedman to give a tribute to Ozzy Osbourne, who passed away on July 25, 2025. Friedman then turns to the reason for writing his book, co-authored by music journalist John Weiderhorn. Friedman talks about the co-writing process and describes it as “putting his musical abilities into words.” His latest solo release, Drama, he calls his best and most romantic work to date — a largely orchestral album that stretches beyond his usual style.Beyond music, Friedman reflects on being a “foreign talento” on Japanese TV, participating in variety shows, commercials, and thoughts on the Japanese entertainment industry. He reveals his inner growth writing the anime theme song Kirei na Senritsu (Beautiful Melody) for Kotoko. Friedman also shares his favorite Japanese book, Ai no Eigyō Hōshin (The Principles of Love Management) by Japanese producer Tsunku, advising young Japanese men on how to cultivate confidence. His favorite J-Pop songs are AKB48's “Heavy Rotation” which he recalls performing with them at the Budokan. He praises Kahala Tomomi's “I'm Proud” as an example of the Japanese concept of heta-uma which he explains at length in the podcast discussion. He points to Ikimono Gakari as another recommendation for those interested in learning more about J-Pop. For the full Show Notes with hyperlinks to Friedman's songs and a book review of his memoir Dreaming Japanese, visit the Books on Asia website at www.booksonasia.net   The Books on Asia Podcast is co-produced with Plum Rain Press. This Week on America's Podcast! We summoned the mathematical wizardry of Ryan T. Russell—armed only with a calculator, a dream, and a list of 50 of our favorite Cheap Trick songs. What did he do? He crunched the numbers, sprinkled some rock 'n' roll sorcery, and conjured up the ultimate Top 25 Cheap Trick songs of all time! Joining this sonic séance are none other than Ross Warner, author of American Standard: Cheap Trick from the Bars to the Budokan and Beyond, and the one and only Eddy Cannistraci, the man, the myth, the alcohol-powered legend. By the end of this marathon, we bid a possibly-tearful, definitely-tipsy Auf Wiedersehen to Mooger and Eddy Alcohol Man, but don't worry—we rally and bring it home with Marc, Ross, and Ryan still standing (barely). So buckle up, Tricksters—we're raising hell and counting riffs on this epic episode! Will your favorite make the list? Will someone start singing “Dream Police” off-key? Only one way to find out... Decades later, as if no time had passed, bassist Kevin Jenkins came to call. I met Kevin in 1986ish, when he was playing with Cyndi Lauper at the height of her fame. He had stopped in to the Rock 'N Roll Cafe, sat in, and graced our small stage. Big man on campus, he was pop-rock royalty. Girl just wanted to have fun, so with my Cafe cohort, Steve Principe, we headed to The Stone Pony to catch Kevin with Cyndi. About a decade later, I'd meet up with Cyndi as Upper Westside mommies… but I digress. Kevin continued to come around and sit in, most notably with my beloved Phoebe Snow and Matt Sorum from Guns & Roses, at the Cafe Wha. From Tokyo's Budokan to London's famous Albert Hall to NYC's Madison Square Garden - Kevin's played them all, with the aforementioned Cyndi Lauper, and Enrique Iglesias, Taylor Dayne, Vicki Sue Robinson, Graham Parker, Lamya, Tom Rush, Maxwell, Roberta Flack, Debbie GIbson and, most recently, Grammy® nominated blues queen Shemekia Copeland, who he's been with 2005. We talked about them all, as well as the music that influenced him, how he got started, how one meeting led to one gig, which led to another. When imbibing started to interfere, Kevin got sober 38 years ago. We discussed that journey, too. We discussed his highlights, opening for Clapton and Michael Jackson, as well as loss, and love. Kevin filled us in on his solo efforts, Step Inside and True Groove, as well as his latest, She:  A Tribute to Joni Mitchell, which will be released in November. Humble and unpretentious to a fault, it was a delightful stroll down memory lane with loads of new info and great stories along the way. Kevin is just as I remember him, except even better. Wisdom, experience, and a clear mind have added to the mix. Adore the man, love his playing, respect his humanity. A singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Eliot Lewis has toured the world over as a member of the Daryl Hall & John Oates band, as well as a former member of The Average White Band. Eliot has also been the only musician to appear on every episode of Daryl Hall's popular, "Live From Daryl's House” show all while keeping his own solo career going at a seemingly impossible pace. Over the course of his career he has worked with the music business' elite including, Billy Gibbons (ZZ Top), Joe Walsh, Sammy Hagar, Todd Rundgren,Train, Cheap Trick, Grace Potter,  Squeeze, Rob Thomas,  Jason Mraz, Darius Rucker, Gavin DeGraw and many, many others. Having mastered four instruments over the course of his career; guitar, keyboard, bass and drums, Eliot's shows will find him moving from one instrument to another. Equally at home in front of 100 or 15,000, Eliot has performed on the worlds most legendary stages, including Madison Square Garden, Japan's Budokan, Red Rocks, The Hollywood Bowl, Carnegie Hall as well as Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, Conan O'Brien, The Today Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live and many others. Eliot has carved out his own distinctive musical brand and sonic landscape and has written, performed and produced ten solo releases. There are many who shaped Eliot's music and writing. As a guitar player, definitely Jeff Beck who I've been listening to all my life, as well as Billy Gibbons who I had the great fortune of working with recently, and Peter Frampton who I actually jammed with when I was 14 yrs old. I had the amazing experience of meeting and seeing many influential artists when I was a kid mainly at Madison Square Garden in New York City. To Purchase tickets to the Limited Seating WESTPORT, CT show click on linkhttps://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/wwweliotlewiscom/eliot-lewis-live-in-westport-ct-444213059 For more on Eliot's tour log onto the website link belowhttps://eliotlewis.com/shows

Before glam exploded and metal ruled MTV, one album tried to bridge the shred-heavy brilliance of Europe with the big-hook ambitions of American rock radio—only to be lost in the chaos of lineup changes and flashing lights. Literally. In this episode, we rediscover Assault Attack by the Michael Schenker Group—a cult classic released in 1982 that had everything going for it: a legendary guitarist, a powerhouse vocalist, and production by Martin Birch. So why didn't it break through? We dig into the story behind the album's creation, from the fallout after One Night at Budokan to the last-minute firing of Graham Bonnet before the band could tour. Along the way, we explore what makes Assault Attack stand out musically—from Schenker's melodic riffing to the underrated grooves laid down by bassist Chris Glen and drummer Ted McKenna. This episode is for fans of underappreciated hard rock, for those who love when bands sound like bands (not just guitar showcases), and for anyone who's ever found a hidden gem in the cassette bin and wondered how it got there. If you're into Rainbow, UFO, or even Iron Maiden's deeper cuts, this one's got something for you.Episode Highlights• 0:00 – [Intro: “Assault Attack”] – The mystery of a great album no one saw live• 5:12 – [Band History] – How MSG went from Budokan to Bonnet• 12:45 – [Album Overview] – Birch's production magic and the shift in sound• 21:30 – [“Desert Song”] – A haunting riff and vocal synergy• 29:00 – [“Broken Promises”] – The secret star: Chris Glen's bass lines• 34:20 – [“Dancer”] – Big hooks, goofy lyrics, and Bonnet's vocal drama• 42:00 – [Legacy & What-Ifs] – What could've been with Coverdale or a proper tour• 48:10 – [Community Pick] – How one vote brought this album into the spotlightDon't Miss OutDig deeper into forgotten albums and the stories that shaped them. The 1995 tour included many firsts for Pearl Jam with a big one being the first time that the band ventured overseas to Southeast Asia and Oceania. This episode marks the first show where they played the legendary Tokyo venue Budokan. Any massive band that has traveled for a world tour has played this venue from names along the lines of Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd, with the most famous instance being Cheap Trick who released a live album recording from a performance there. When Vitalogy came out, Pearl Jam was one of the hottest bands in the world. The hype in Japan was massive as the crowd there was red hot witnessing the band at their height. We have a lot of fun performances to get to at this show, and there's no lack of discussion about what Jack Irons presence brought to the band during this time frame. Stay tuned for great topics such as a Corduroy solo with more drive, the rare 1995 alternate intro to Even Flow, an explosive Immortality, Satan's Bed at the best its ever been, why Go and Animal may be the best combination in the history of Pearl Jam and Ledbetter and Indifference getting the rare appearance at the same show. And we'll share a great story about a surprise when finding the Cheap Trick Live At Budokan record while digging through crates at a shop in Chicago. Marty Friedman is playing the Token Lounge on Friday, January 31st, but first, he spoke with me on numerous topics. His latest book is called Dreaming Japanese. In the book, he talks about the highs and lows of playing in a monstrous band like Megadeth, leaving and starting over in a foreign land. He said he read other autobiographies to give himself a clearer look at what he wanted his to be like. “I got a feel as a reader of what I wanted to read myself. And as a result, I wound up being flat honest and talking about embarrassing things about myself, and I didn’t always paint myself in a good light.” As he puts it, talking about the good things he’s done might read more like a resume, not a personal behind-the-scenes look that he wanted to give the fans. He said, “I’m definitely not the hero in all of these stories.” As far as leaving Megadeth went, he said he’d never really talked about it before. ” Once I left Megadeth, I stopped doing interviews about the band completely.” He told me that the venues he played at, weren’t allowed to promote the show with anything Megadeth. Now he wants to talk about the relationships and the inner turmoil as he decided to exit the band. “I feel really bad about the way I left the band, and the situation I left them in, and you can in the book why it turned out that way…and there’s no excusing what I did. It wasn’t going to happen any other way.” He said that joining the band on stage for two concerts in 2023 closed the chapter on that part of his life, which was still open. ” Yeah, especially the Budokan show in Japan. That was one thing that was hanging over, ya know.” He spoke of wanting to play at that venue from an early age. Now, he’s played it several times, but there was a need to play that place with Megadeth. He called it “unfinished business”. When we (Dave Mustaine and him) had the chance to play there, it was a big celebration.” He said that even though they went down different paths to meet up at that gig over the years, it was like a love letter to the fans when it was all said and done. “It was definite closure!” He also spoke to the massive popularity of the band in the early 90s. “What led up to it was more interesting than actually getting there. The suffering part of the career. It reads better in the book.” He then describes it as taking a “massive dump”. Yes, you need to hear him talk about the rise of the band with a bowel movement analogy. I think it’s been about 26 years since I last spoke with Marty. Great to have him back on Talkin’ Rock with Meltdown.

It's the fall of 1989 and the Paul McCartney World Tour is officially underway! Along the way on the road with Macca were the lessons gleaned from tours past - including the notion that his band ought to be broken-in in front of friendly or otherwise European crowds before heading to the UK or North America. And so it was on September 25th that the McCartneys - along with guitarist Hamish Stuart, keyboardist Paul "Wix" Wickens guitarist Robbie McIntosh and drummer Chris Whitten - hit the stage in Oslo, Norway for a series of engagements up and down the continent for the next several months. Paul's tour was met with praise from fans and reviewers alike, and would serve as exactly the boost he needed to sustain a hefty touring schedule for the foreseeable future - as well as serving as an overall template for future tours to come. As McCartney won the hearts and minds of Europe, Ringo Starr was making a return of his own, playing the Budokan in Japan for the first time since the Beatles themselves performed there live in 1966...
