Thank you Katharine Hill, Roxy Morgan, Nancy Dangelo, Donna Buchness, and many others for tuning into my live video with Marlon Weems! Join me for my next live video in the app.SummaryIn this discussion, Egberto Willies and Marlon Weems analyze the dangers of Donald Trump's proposed tariff war against Canada, Mexico, and China, highlighting the economic and political fallout. They discuss how past tariff policies backfired, raising consumer prices and harming American industries, particularly agriculture. Weems and Willies emphasize that tariffs function as a hidden tax on Americans and warn that retaliatory actions from trade partners could permanently damage U.S. economic standing. The conversation also touches on Trump's broader strategy of using tariffs to manipulate budget figures while benefiting the wealthy at the expense of working-class Americans.Key Takeaways* Tariffs as a Tax on Americans – Trump's tariffs will not harm foreign countries but will instead raise costs for U.S. consumers and businesses.* Past Trade War Failures – The last round of tariffs during Trump's presidency devastated American farmers and led to costly bailouts.* Retaliation from Trade Partners – Canada and Mexico are already preparing countermeasures, potentially cutting the U.S. out of vital trade relationships.* Hidden Economic Agenda – Tariffs allow Trump to inflate revenue figures, justifying tax cuts for the wealthy while increasing financial burdens on working people.* Potential Economic Recession – Rising fuel, food, and manufactured goods costs could drive inflation and push the U.S. economy toward another downturn.Progressive Closing StatementTrump's reckless approach to trade is not about strengthening America—it's about enriching the powerful while leaving working-class Americans to suffer the consequences. If his tariff war proceeds, everyday people will pay more for food, gas, and essential goods, all while corporations and billionaires enjoy tax breaks. The real solution lies in fair trade policies that protect jobs, encourage cooperation with allies, and ensure economic gains benefit all Americans—not just the wealthy elite. The United States has long been a dominant force in global trade, leveraging economic power to influence international markets and establish advantageous agreements. However, when tariffs are used recklessly, they can quickly backfire, harming the very industries and consumers they are meant to protect. This is precisely what former President Donald Trump's approach to trade policies has done in the past—and appears likely to do again should he return to office. In a recent discussion, financial expert Marlon Weems and progressive commentator Egberto Willies delved into the ongoing fallout from Trump's threats to impose sweeping tariffs on key trading partners—Canada, Mexico, and China. Their conversation underscored the economic, political, and strategic consequences that the U.S. will likely regret as these nations respond with their own countermeasures. The Pattern of Trade War FailuresWeems rightly points out that Trump's history with tariffs has been disastrous. During his first term, the trade war with China was marked by retaliatory measures that crippled U.S. agriculture. China, faced with increased tariffs on steel and aluminum, retaliated by slashing purchases of American soybeans and other agricultural goods, causing billions in losses for American farmers. The government was then forced to issue massive subsidies—over $30 billion in emergency aid—to keep farmers afloat. This bailout money, which came from taxpayer dollars, clearly that the tariffs did not “bring money into the U.S.,” as Trump often claimed, but instead created an economic crisis that the government had to mitigate. Now, Trump is signaling his intent to reignite trade conflicts, targeting not just China but also Canada and Mexico—America's two largest trading partners under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA), which he himself negotiated. This move is particularly baffling, given that the previous tariff experiment resulted in rising costs for American businesses and consumers. Weems highlights that unlike small contractors Trump has exploited in the past, entire nations have the power to push back in ways that could severely disrupt supply chains and increase costs for Americans across the board. The Economic Reality: Tariffs as a Tax on AmericansOne of the most important takeaways from Weems' analysis is the fundamental misconception surrounding tariffs. Trump's rhetoric frames tariffs as a punishment imposed on foreign countries, but in reality, tariffs function as a tax on American consumers and businesses. When the U.S. imposes tariffs on Chinese goods, for example, it is not China that pays the tax—it is American importers and retailers who bear the brunt of the cost, which is then passed on to consumers. For everyday Americans, this means higher prices on everything from household goods to electronics to vehicles. Since many car manufacturers rely on parts from Mexico, a tariff on Mexican imports will drive up car prices. A similar impact will be felt on food costs, as Mexico is a primary supplier of fruits and vegetables, and Canada plays a key role in agricultural trade. Canadian whiskey, tequila, avocados, and even the basic components used in food production could see steep price hikes. The irony is that these tariffs would disproportionately affect the very working-class voters who form the backbone of Trump's base—those who shop at Walmart and depend on affordable goods to make ends meet. The Political Blowback: Canada and Mexico Fight BackTrump's aggressive trade stance is not occurring in a vacuum. Canada and Mexico are already responding with their own countermeasures, and the consequences could be severe. Canada, for instance, has proposed its own set of retaliatory tariffs and has begun encouraging a “Buy Canadian” movement. This type of economic nationalism could permanently reduce U.S. exports to Canada, cutting off a critical revenue stream for American manufacturers and farmers.Mexico has also made it clear that it will not tolerate economic bullying. President Claudia Sheinbaum, in a swift and forceful response, reminded Trump that America's own policies contribute to issues such as drug trafficking. She highlighted the flow of guns from the U.S. into Mexico, which fuels violence in her country. By countering Trump's narrative with hard facts, she exposed the hypocrisy in his argument that Mexico is solely responsible for fentanyl smuggling.Furthermore, if Canada and Mexico deepen their trade ties with other nations, the U.S. risks losing its position as their primary economic partner. When China faced American tariffs under Trump, it shifted its agricultural purchases to Brazil—a move that permanently reduced U.S. market share in the soybean industry. A similar shift by Canada and Mexico could have long-lasting consequences, pushing the U.S. further into economic isolation. The Hidden Agenda: Using Tariffs to Mask Economic FailuresWeems and Willies also discussed the political motivations behind these trade policies. Tariffs are not just a misguided economic tool; they are part of a broader political strategy aimed at manipulating budget figures and justifying tax cuts for the wealthy. Trump understands that by imposing tariffs, the government will collect more revenue in the short term. He can then use these temporary funds to claim that he has “balanced the budget” or “brought in billions from China,” even though these costs are actually being paid by Americans. This strategy also plays into Trump's larger pattern of economic deception. He proposes sweeping tax cuts that overwhelmingly benefit the wealthy while implementing hidden tax increases—like tariffs—that disproportionately harm the working class. Meanwhile, large corporations and the ultra-rich benefit from loopholes and tax breaks, further exacerbating wealth inequality. The Fallout: Rising Costs and a Potential RecessionUltimately, as Weems warns, this reckless approach to trade could lead to severe economic consequences, including inflation spikes and even a recession. Gas prices could rise significantly due to higher costs on Canadian energy imports. Food prices will climb as tariffs hit agricultural goods from Mexico. Essential consumer products will become more expensive, making life harder for the very people Trump claims to champion. If history is any guide, these tariffs will not achieve their intended goals. Instead, they will destabilize the economy, alienate key allies, and force the U.S. into reactionary bailouts and financial maneuvering to stave off disaster. Meanwhile, the rest of the world will move forward, finding alternative markets and partners to reduce reliance on American trade. Conclusion: A Self-Inflicted Economic WoundMarlon Weems' analysis, as highlighted in his conversation with Egberto Willies, serves as a critical warning about the dangers of an ill-conceived tariff war. The U.S. stands to lose far more than it gains, as consumers bear the cost of increased prices and businesses face declining exports. Canada, Mexico, and China will not sit idly by; they will retaliate, and their countermeasures will have long-term consequences for American trade.Instead of pursuing nationalist economic policies rooted in bravado and deception, the U.S. should focus on fair trade agreements that protect workers while maintaining strong international partnerships. A cooperative approach would yield far better economic outcomes than another round of reckless tariffs. Unfortunately, if Trump's past actions are any indication, he is unlikely to change course. And if the American people do not push back against this self-inflicted economic harm, they will once again pay the price—literally. To hear more, visit egberto.substack.com

Thank you Sheila Rutz, Kate E, and many others for tuning into my live video with Marlon Weems! Join me for my next live video in the app.SummaryIn their discussion, Marlon Weems and Egberto Willies delve into the fractures within the MAGA movement, focusing on the rise of opportunistic figures like Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy. They critique the contradictions of MAGA populism, including its anti-immigrant rhetoric and betrayal of American workers. Highlighting examples of hypocrisy, including Musk's business practices and Ramaswamy's cultural critiques, they reveal how these elites exploit MAGA while alienating its base. The conversation underscores the need for solidarity and policies that benefit all Americans rather than pandering to divisive ideologies.* MAGA Betrayals: MAGA leaders have failed to deliver on promises, prioritizing power and self-interest over meaningful policies for their base.* Elon Musk's Opportunism: Musk's anti-labor actions and reliance on foreign labor contradict his populist rhetoric, exposing his alignment with elite interests.* Ramaswamy's Misstep: Ramaswamy's criticism of American workers backfired, alienating MAGA voters and revealing his technocratic elitism.* Rising Backlash: MAGA supporters like Laura Loomer are turning against their leaders, exposing hypocrisy and fostering internal conflict.* Progressive Vision: The discussion emphasizes the need for policies focused on fairness, labor rights, and solidarity to counteract divisive GOP tactics. The GOP's internal chaos reveals the hollowness of MAGA populism and the dangers of elite-driven opportunism. Progressives must seize this moment by offering policies rooted in justice, equity, and inclusivity—empowering all Americans rather than exploiting their grievances. The failures of MAGA provide a clear opening for bold, transformative change that unites rather than divides. The Republican Party has long been a coalition of disparate interests, from corporate conservatives to evangelical Christians, libertarians, and, more recently, the MAGA base. The MAGA movement, an explosive, populist offshoot spearheaded by Donald Trump, has fractured the party into warring factions. At the heart of this schism is the tension between MAGA loyalists and a newer breed of technocratic opportunists personified by figures like Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy—the so-called "DOGE Duo." In this evolving GOP civil war, activists like Marlon Weems and Egberto Willies have shed light on the profound disservice this political chaos is inflicting on MAGA's rank and file, exposing how these voters are being cynically exploited. The MAGA Promise UnfulfilledThe MAGA movement initially offered a visceral appeal to voters disillusioned with the status quo. Trump's rhetoric of bringing back jobs, restoring American greatness, and prioritizing the forgotten man resonated with millions. Yet, as Weems and Willies noted in their discussion, MAGA voters are awakening to a painful reality: their supposed savior is more concerned with power and vanity than delivering on his promises. Trump's outlandish proposals—annexing Canada, invading Panama, or purchasing Greenland—underscore his erratic leadership and inability to deliver substantive results. This realization has fueled a broader reckoning within MAGA ranks. Figures like Ramaswamy and Musk, who ostensibly align with Trump, exploit MAGA fervor while advancing policies that betray its working-class base. Ramaswamy's dismissive comments about American workers—essentially branding them as undisciplined and lazy—expose the disdain underlying his calculated populism. Similarly, Musk's anti-labor agenda, reliance on non-American labor for Tesla manufacturing, and profiteering from policies favorable to his ventures further alienate the very voters MAGA claimed to champion.Technocrats in MAGA ClothingRamaswamy and Musk represent a new front in the GOP civil war. They wield the language of populism but advance an elitist, technocratic agenda. The crux of this strategy lies in immigration. While MAGA rhetoric demonizes immigrants, both men have quietly supported policies like expanding H-1B visas, which allow corporations to hire foreign workers at lower wages. This creates a dual betrayal: undermining American workers while inflaming xenophobia for political gain.Weems and Willies highlighted this hypocrisy, noting how such policies enrich Silicon Valley billionaires while impoverishing middle-class Americans. This bait-and-switch is emblematic of a broader GOP strategy: pitting workers against one another while consolidating power among the wealthy elite. The False Idols of MAGAMusk and Ramaswamy's technocratic elitism is not the only betrayal of MAGA voters. Their casual embrace of pseudoscience and regressive ideologies has further exposed the hollow core of their leadership. Musk's flirtation with eugenics theories and amplification of junk science on his platform reflects a broader effort to distract and divide the electorate. As Egberto Willies aptly noted, these tactics are not new. They echo the mechanisms of white supremacy, a tool used historically to pit marginalized groups against one another while shielding the elite from accountability. Ramaswamy's mistaken belief that his proximity to MAGA could shield him from backlash revealed his fundamental misunderstanding of the forces he sought to manipulate. His racially charged rhetoric and disdain for American culture have not only alienated MAGA voters but exposed the broader con: MAGA was never about serving its base—it was always about consolidating power for its leaders.MAGA vs. RealityThis growing awareness among MAGA voters has fueled an unprecedented backlash. From the halls of conservative media to the echo chambers of social media, cracks are forming. Figures like Laura Loomer, once a staunch Trump supporter, have turned on their former allies, exposing the contradictions and conflicts of interest riddling the MAGA elite. Musk's retaliatory silencing of Loomer on X (formerly Twitter) only underscores the fragility of this new GOP faction.Meanwhile, Steve Bannon's “War Room,” once a bastion of MAGA unity, now serves as a theater for airing grievances. Loomer's fiery denunciation of Musk as a manipulative opportunist and her broader critique of MAGA elites have galvanized discontent within the movement. These moments of infighting highlight a fundamental truth: MAGA's foundation was built on the sand of grievances, not sustainable policies or shared goals.A Progressive Path ForwardAs the GOP implodes under the weight of its contradictions, progressives must seize this moment to offer a compelling alternative. The MAGA movement's disillusionment reveals a yearning for authenticity, fairness, and accountability—values central to the progressive vision. Universal healthcare, living wages, robust labor protections, and immigration reform prioritizing humanity and economic sustainability can unite a fractured electorate.Weems and Willies's analysis demonstrates the importance of exposing hypocrisy while building solidarity. Progressives must challenge the MAGA narrative not condescending but with empathy, recognizing the shared struggles that unite working people across ideological divides. Progressives can transcend the divisions sown by MAGA and its technocratic enablers by emphasizing policies that uplift all Americans.ConclusionThe GOP civil war between MAGA loyalists and technocratic elites like Musk and Ramaswamy underscores the hollowness of conservative populism. While MAGA voters are awakening to the con, progressives have an opportunity to offer a genuine alternative rooted in solidarity and justice. By exposing the hypocrisies of the GOP while advancing bold, inclusive policies, progressives can forge a new path forward—one that finally delivers on the promises MAGA could only pretend to fulfill. Marlon Weems and Egberto Willies dissect the multifaceted reasons behind Kamala Harris's election loss, exploring racial, gender-based, and societal dynamics. The conversation features Marlon Weems, a progressive journalist, who provides critical insight into the broader implications of Harris's defeat, framed within the political and cultural landscape of the United States.Key Themes and Analysis:* Racial and Gender Bias:* The journalists in the video argue that systemic racial and gender prejudices were pivotal in Harris's loss. Despite her qualifications as a former attorney general and vice president, Harris faced persistent stereotyping and character attacks, including being labeled "an empty suit" by critics. These labels were rooted more in bias than a substantive critique of her policies or achievements.* Egberto and Marlon highlight the deep-seated discomfort in segments of American society with electing a Black and Asian-American woman to the highest office, suggesting that this bias reflects unresolved historical inequalities.* Media Narratives and Perception:* The media played a significant role in framing Harris's public image. Conservative rhetoric, amplified by former President Trump, portrayed her as incompetent, a narrative that resonated with a substantial portion of the electorate. This perception overshadowed her policy proposals and her qualifications.* The conversation also critiques progressive media outlets for failing to counter these narratives robustly, thus leaving Harris vulnerable to attacks.* Electoral Dynamics:* The men identify white women as the decisive swing voters whose support shifted the outcome. While minority groups largely supported Harris, shifts in Latino men and a small portion of Black male voters towards Trump compounded challenges.* Egberto stressed the need to address misinformation campaigns, such as targeted attacks against Harris's policies (e.g., banning menthol cigarettes), which exploited cultural touchpoints to sway key demographics.* Democratic Strategy and the Path Forward:* Harris's campaign is critiqued for failing to confront the underlying biases aggressively and for not effectively communicating her achievements and policy priorities. Democrats are called out for hesitancy to "lean into perceived weaknesses" and for running campaigns reminiscent of older, outdated strategies.* The journalists argue that Democrats must embrace more inclusive and bold messaging, directly addressing issues of race and gender while building coalitions across diverse groups. It calls for more vigorous grassroots organizing and reliance on progressive independent media to bypass mainstream narratives.* Civic Education and Societal Challenges:* A recurring theme is the lack of civic literacy among voters, which the authors suggest was exploited by Trump's campaign. They call for a renewed focus on educating the electorate about governmental systems and the importance of informed decision-making.Conclusion: Egberto and Marlon conclude on a reflective note, emphasizing that Kamala Harris's loss is not merely a political defeat but a stark reminder of America's ongoing struggles with racism and sexism. However, it also sees an opportunity for progressive movements to regroup, rethink strategies, and leverage independent media to counteract misinformation. The progressive movement can strive for more equitable representation and transformative policies in future elections by addressing systemic barriers and building broader coalitions.Thank you DemocracyMustWin, Marie Lachat, and many others for tuning into my live video with Marlon Weems! The Republican Party Has Abandoned America. Why?

Produced by KSQD90.7FM “Be Bold America!” Sunday, July 17, 2022 at 5:00pm (PDT) “How little do my countrymen know what precious blessings they are in possession of, and which no other people on earth enjoy!” ― Thomas Jefferson How do we do politics right when the Republican Party has abandoned America? Americans were in “possession of” and were building upon, the “precious blessings” of the traditions, principles, values, rights, and the Rule of Law that no other people on earth enjoyed until the Republican Party abandoned: Truth, Science, Women (Choice/ERA), LGBTQ+ citizens, Black citizens, Voting, Healthcare, Unions, Public Education, Child Care, Separation of Church and State, Higher Education, Minimum Wage, Equality, Environmental Issues, Covid Masks/Vaccine, Gun Safety, Fair Elections, the Climate Crisis, and even Democracy itself. How do we do American politics right when over the past four+ decades, Republicans and some Democrats have subjected the American people to massive amounts of stress and levels of strain that could make our society crack? Interview Guest: Egberto Willies, producer and host of “Politics Done Right,” is an activist, author, political blogger, radio show host, business owner, software developer, web designer, and mechanical engineer in Kingwood, TX. Egberto Willies is an ardent Liberal who believes tolerance is essential. His favorite phrase is “political involvement should be a requirement for citizenship.” Egberto also believes that we must get away from the current policies that reward those who simply move money and capital to become wealthy but who produce nothing tangible for our society. If a change in these policies does not occur, America will be no different from other oligarchic societies where a few accumulate massive wealth while the rest are mathematically left out because it is impossible to catch up. Egberto discusses these issues daily on his Pacifica Network radio show, “Politics Done Right” and at his blog www.egbertowillies.com.
