Live long and prosper, Trekkies! We are here with the inimitable Rosalind Chao. You Might Know Her From: The Joy Luck Club, Mulan, 3 Body Problem, Sweet Tooth, M*A*S*H, Star Trek: The Next Generation & Deep Space Nine, I Am Sam, Just Like Heaven, Freaky Friday, and The L Word: Generation Q. Rosalind gave us all the goods on “the summer of Chao” with her one-two fantasy punch on Netflix, the fervent (and divided) base of fans formerly known as “trekkies,” and her history-making turns in The Joy Luck Club and the live-action Mulan (but is the industry making any progress? Sigh.) Plus, Rosalind teases Pei-Pei's return in Freaky Friday 2, explains why it was important to embrace the trans community with her role on Gen Q, and gets to the bottom of her tucking her hair behind her ear in Just Like Heaven where Reese Witherspoon f*cks a ghost. Fresh off a tour opening for Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Dion shares his takes on musical exploration, genre development, and collaboration. Dion Kerr is a forward-thinking, multi-dimensional artist (multi-instrumentalist, producer, arranger, songwriter, photographer, and videographer) born and raised in South Florida. Kerr's work reflects a broad range of influences and mediums. He has toured and recorded worldwide as a leader and a sideman to various groups spanning multiple genres. Dion Kerr displays his unwavering talent as a producer, multi-instrumentalist, and conceptual artist. Utilizing acoustic and electric elements, he blends a wide range of influences and styles into a cohesive sound that expands the limitations of genre-bound music. There are hints of Dion's eclectic taste in his records' melodic groove-based instrumentals. Experimentation is essential in Dion's process and is always represented in vivid fluidity. Dion can be seen at some of the most renowned festivals, venues, studios, and galleries with many great young and upcoming artists of all art forms. Kerr has shared the stage with Ignacio Berroa, Nicholas Payton, Lillias White, Godwin Louis, Jean Caze, Emmet Cohen, Immanuel Wilkins, Justin Brown, Tivon Pennicott, and most recently Marcus Strickland coming off of their European tour of festivals and venues such as Ronnies Scott's in London. Dion co-founded the band The Smoogies, who released their debut album Planet Smoogies with trumpeter Nicholas Payton and People Music; they are set to release their next record, a live album, in 2024. Dion was the lead engineer and co-producer of Seafoam Walls record XVI; he also played guitar (formerly bass) in the live incarnation, released on Thurston Moore and Eva Printz's label Ecstatic Peace Library, which was recorded and produced in his home studio. They recently got off tour, opening up for Unknown Mortal Orchestra for their US tour dates, and have secured a sponsorship with Fender. He is also a key member in many other highly sought-after bands in South Florida and New York art scenes. His musical career began early on by being billed with the Dave Leibman quartet while he was still in High School, leading them to reconnect at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music in NY, where he attended school on scholarship. He has been seen at venues and festivals such as The Blue Note, Sevilla Jazz Festival, Martinique Jazz Festival, Ground Up Festival, Guatemala Jazz Festival, Quebec City Jazz Festival, Young Jazz Festival, Casa Del Jazz, and Adrienne Arsht Center. He has toured North America and Europe extensively with different bands. Dion has scored music for films featured at SXSW, New Orleans Film, and Miami Film Festivals. Dion Kerr's new solo record, set to be released in 2023, follows up his latest releases, Ivy, which also features Jeff Parker, Bubby Lewis, Adam O'Farrill, Reptile Ground, Echoes of Lost Time, and Ruby. His new record showcases his expansive musical knowledge and arranging abilities, featuring himself on bass, vocals, recording, production, and mixing. His YouTube series Dialogues has been his most recent outlet, which features a wide variety of musical artists that he performs together in an intimate duo setting, which showcases the individuality of each featured artist and how a musical conversation can take place in hopes of bringing people more together. We are joined with actor, director, producer & teacher & writer Marishka S. Phillips to have an awesome conversation on the craft of acting!Marishka S. Phillips was born into the entertainment business. Her mother, Sandra Reaves-Phillips is an award-winning actress, in addition to being a writer and a singer. Marishka grew up immersed in theater, film and television, so it was not surprising that she would follow in her mother's footsteps. Ms. Phillips had been honing her skills as a dancer, taking classes at Alvin Ailey School of Dance and Broadway Dance Center, and had begun performing at a very early age. She got her first major theatrical break at age 13 when she was cast for the European tour of RAISIN. This opportunity offered her a chance to explore the world and served as an important confidence builder. Her career path has been anything but traditional, though it started off that way. She landed on Broadway, cast as part of the ensemble, on the musical UPTOWN: IT'S HOT starring Maurice Hines, in which she also understudied for the female lead. She continued amassing credits on Brodway with roles in BUBBLIN' BROWN SUGAR, FAME: THE MUSICAL, THE WIZ and THE ME NOBODY KNOWS. On television, she had re-occurring roles in the last two seasons of THE COSBY SHOW spin-off – A DIFFERENT WORLD. When she was not traveling the world with a musical or as a backup singer with recording artists like Sean “P Diddy” Combs and Cece Winans, she was developing and fortifying other aspects of her talents. She never considered herself a one trick pony. Like her mother before her, she began writing and eventually set her eye on directing, but not before fate would bring her together with the multi-faceted Susan Batson, who among her many other talents, was a world-renown acting coach who worked with some of Hollywood's A-list celebrities. Though she did not abandon any of her other career goals, Ms. Batson did open up new possibilities which she embraced with the same passion that she has every chapter of her life's journey. Today, in addition to being known as a working actor, Marishka is also a writer and director whose credits continue to grow. Her short film, Melinda: The Movie starring Tony Award-winning performers, LaChanze and Lillias White won numerous awards on the short film circuit. Ms. Phillips directed the one woman play, DOWN TO EARTHA, written and starringDierdra McDowell, which was a tribute to the invincible entertainer/civil rights and social justice activist, Eartha Kitt.Coaching other actors has become a central part of Ms. Phillips career development. She has been an instrumental force in helping actors such as Kerry Washington (Scandal), Nicole Beharie (Miss Juneteenth) and Celia Rose Gooding (Jagged Little Pill) achieve some of their best performances, and has received credit for doing that, as a result, she has become a much in demand acting coach. (visit her on YouTube) The Marishka Method. She currently coaches Nafessa Williams (I Wanna Dance With Somebody), Taja V. Simpson (The Oval) Shaquita Smith (Wicked City) and many more. Dylan and Connor sat down with Broadway star Jewelle Blackman (Hadestown, The Lion King). As the spooky season reaches its peak, the twins kick off the chat with a post mortem (literally) on Halloween Ends and scary movies in general. Jewelle, the resident Lady of the Underground at Hadestown, joins in to get to know the guys, covering topics such as her Canadian roots, being an instrumentalist, transitioning from creating one of the Fates on Broadway to playing Persephone full-time, working with Lillias White, cutting her teeth as a Muse in the Hercules musical, and the ballsy moment of pursuing The Lion King in Toronto. They dive into the reality of performing on Broadway, being valued as an artist, and the importance of giving Black artists the opportunity to shine. ACTION MOVES PEOPLE UNITED, a World Peace Project with UNESCO – USFUCA, is produced by Grammy® Winner Kevin Mackie, award winning producer Krista Wallhagen, and Guinness World Record® holder musician and award-winning filmmaker Rupam Sarmah.
