Navigating South Korea's Economic Turbulence: From Crisis to Community-Driven Ecology and Radical Agroecology

The Poor Prole's Almanac

Our latest episode navigates the turbulent water of South Korea's neoliberal rise, examining how austerity measures imposed by the IMF hit the working class hard and compromised environmental protections. Yet, within these adversities, seedbeds of change emerged, notably in the form of farming communes and radical agroecology. We unravel these complex threads with a nod to the contradictions they harbor, setting the stage for a deeper conversation about capitalism's imprint on democracy and nature. The narrative doesn't stop there. We turn our gaze to the evolution of environmental movements in South Korea, transitioning from the centralized NGO structures of the '80s to the grassroots-driven initiatives we see today. By spotlighting movements like the Life and Peace Movement, we highlight how ordinary citizens, pro-democracy advocates, and agroecological farmers are crafting a more resilient and balanced ecological future from the ground up. These community-driven efforts challenge the status quo not by dismantling capitalism directly but by fostering local autonomy and ecological alternatives, offering rich insights for similar movements in places like the United States. Finally, we explore the political landscape of agroecology with movements like JADAM and Korean Natural Farming at the helm, which challenge the artificial separation of politics from daily life. Consumer cooperatives are on the rise, transforming societal values and culture by creating alternatives to capitalism. In the realm of cooperative community agriculture, the Hansel and Movement stands as a testament to the power of collective endeavor, cycling financial and agricultural outputs back into the community. Ep #308 - A Wave of Peace - An Interview with Peace Messenger, David Wick What an amazing time in history we are experiencing.  I don't know about you guys but there are days I am unsure how to respond to all the chaos and unrest in the world and then on other days I am fascinated and so grateful for the people doing the hard work and bringing light to the world.  Here on Empowering Chats I get to meet and interview those people I call Light Leaders who are here to spread love, light and hope to everyone they meet. I am honored to welcome David Wick to Empowering Chats. David calls himself a messenger of peace. And he walks the talk. He serves on the Council of Directors for the non-profit organization, Pathways to Peace. They are an international Peace-building, educational and consulting organization whose main goal is to foster Peace-builders and Peace-building activities in order to create a Culture of Peace.  In this chat David and I dive into the significance of individual and collective peace-building, riding the PeaceWave and taking part in the Peace Movement through the "Peace everyday at Noon," practice. I believe we can never work too hard in bringing light and peace to our inner world and then shining out to the greater world. The work David and others are doing to this end is inspiring. #338 In this episode, Guy welcomed Rahelio Rodriguez, a spiritual guide based in Sedona, Arizona. They discussed the significant shift humanity is undergoing as it transitions into a higher-dimensional, more enlightened state. Rahelio shared his experiences working with the spiritual energies of Sedona's sacred land, including shamanic practices, astrology, and sound healing. He recounted personal encounters with UFOs and conveyed teachings from star beings about the Great Awakening. The conversation touches on the importance of embodying fifth-dimensional teachings in the present 3D reality, the parallels between human and Earth's energy systems, and the catalytic role of sacred sites in spiritual awakening. Rahelio also offered insights into managing Kundalini energy and the ongoing global shifts influenced by astrological patterns. The episode emphasizes personal spiritual growth, the integration of intuitive and rational mindsets, and the collective movement towards a harmonious future. About Rahelio: Rahelio Rodriguez's spiritual journey began in his teenage years, during the vibrant yet tumultuous era of the 1970s. At 66, he reflects on his youth, marked by the counterculture movement and experimentation with psychedelics. These experiences, though challenging, propelled him into deep soul searching and ultimately led him to a path of profound spiritual awakening. Rahelio's early encounters with altered states of consciousness were not always pleasant. Unlike his friends who enjoyed the euphoria, Rahelio often grappled with intense existential questions and a fear of death. This fear propelled him into deeper spiritual exploration, culminating in a spontaneous Kundalini experience that opened his mind to a higher reality. As he recounts, “Nothing like thinking you're going to die to make you get spiritual real quick.” Key Points Discussed:  (00:00) - SHAMAN REVEALS Humanity's Imminent Awakening Timeline (00:46) - Introduction to the Podcast (01:42) - Meet Rahelio Rodriguez (02:05) - The Magic of Sedona (02:32) - Spiritual Practices and Healing (05:19) - The Power of Sacred Sites (10:22) - Balancing Rational and Intuitive Minds (18:25) - Kundalini Awakening (22:22) - UFO Encounters and Mystical Experiences (27:18) - Preparing for the Next Cycle of Humanity (27:26) - The Fifth Dimensional Reality (27:56) - The Age of Aquarius and Social Revolution (29:44) - The First Wave of Volunteers and Peace Movement (31:11) - Astrological Alignments and Social Upheaval (32:02) - Government Corruption and Power Struggles (32:50) - The Aquarius Theme and Group Dynamics (35:37) - UFOs and the Role of Star People (38:49) - The Importance of Spiritual Awakening (52:34) - The Role of Love and Compassion (54:45) - The Path to Personal and Global Transformation (55:51) - Conclusion and Final Thoughts How to Contact Rahelio Rodriguez:rahelio.homestead.com www.facebook.com/rahelio   About me:My Instagram: www.instagram.com/guyhlawrence/?hl=en Guy's websites:www.guylawrence.com.au www.liveinflow.co

Linus Carl Pauling (February 28, 1901 – August 19, 1994) was an American chemist, biochemist, chemical engineer, peace activist, author, and educator. He published more than 1,200 papers and books, of which about 850 dealt with scientific topics. New Scientist called him one of the 20 greatest scientists of all time, and as of 2000, he was rated the 16th most important scientist in history. For his scientific work, Pauling was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1954. For his peace activism, he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1962. He is one of five people to have won more than one Nobel Prize (the others being Marie Curie, John Bardeen, Frederick Sanger and Karl Barry Sharpless). Of these, he is the only person to have been awarded two unshared Nobel Prizes, and one of two people to be awarded Nobel Prizes in different fields, the other being Marie Curie. Pauling was one of the founders of the fields of quantum chemistry and molecular biology. His contributions to the theory of the chemical bond include the concept of orbital hybridisation and the first accurate scale of electronegativities of the elements. Pauling also worked on the structures of biological molecules, and showed the importance of the alpha helix and beta sheet in protein secondary structure. Pauling's approach combined methods and results from X-ray crystallography, molecular model building, and quantum chemistry. His discoveries inspired the work of Rosalind Franklin, James Watson, Francis Crick, and Maurice Wilkins on the structure of DNA, which in turn made it possible for geneticists to crack the DNA code of all organisms. In his later years, he promoted nuclear disarmament, as well as orthomolecular medicine, megavitamin therapy, and dietary supplements, especially ascorbic acid (commonly known as Vitamin C). He was married to the American human rights activist Ava Helen Pauling. I recently watched an excellent documentary on the peace movement and its role in stopping US escalation in the Vietnam War in 1969, the first year of Richard Nixon presidency. It's an American Experience documentary called the Movement and the "Madman". You can see it on PBS. After occurred to me, where is the peace movement on the Ukraine War? Why is the Left so silent as Joe Biden pursues his own reckless "Madman" strategy? Who's worse? Joe Biden or Richard Nixon? In this episode, I explore all of those questions.

Many non-scouters believe that Scouting is militaristic. Almost to the point of an “urban legend”. This rumor that somehow our peace movement is actually militarily oriented. Baden-Powell the founder of Scouting spend most of his professional career in the military. As the Scouting movement was developing it became more of a peace movement throughout the world. Citizenship and one's duty to the country are regarded as institutional morals. In the past, the Boy Scouts of America have been asked to participate in campaigns for volunteer citizens. Retaining the principles and beliefs of the scout movement as a peaceful organization.

Sylvia Bufanda Courtney, a Latina of Mexican and Native American ancestry, was born in Tucson, Arizona, but considers San Francisco her home.  It is where she chose to live after leaving Tucson in 1964 in hopes of being able to work for higher wages than were available to her in Tucson and thereby allow her to afford to go to college since there were many choices in San Francisco as compared to only the University of Arizona in Tucson at that time.  She was raised by a single mother and the costs to attend the U of A were out of reach, even for a working student.  She met and married Vince Courtney soon after arriving in San Francisco and they had two children first, they both finished college at San Francisco State and went on to law school while raising the children and working multiple jobs.  Simultaneously, both Sylvia and Vince became activists beginning in the 60's, organizing against the Vietnam War and for civil rights including farmworkers' union lettuce and grape boycotts and other labor union issues.  Upon becoming a full time student, she was instrumental in establishing the SFSU Childcare Center and served as the first Chair of the Parents' Council.  She was selected as a delegate from SFSU's Student Mobilization Committee Against the War to attend the Washington D C conference of the National Peace Action Coalition which planned and implemented the largest antiwar demonstrations in the U S in the early 1970's.  Before graduating in 1974, summa cum laude, Sylvia taught courses in La Raza and Women's Studies and was awarded a fellowship by Carnegie Endowment for Peace to study and conduct community outreach in San Francisco on issues of racism and its impact on local communities and on international relations. After graduating from law school, Sylvia worked for the federal antipoverty program, U S Community Services Administration, as Region IX Human Rights Chief.  She was hired as a deputy public defender in San Francisco in 1982, and in 1984, entered private practice, specializing in labor and employment law, specifically cases involving wrongful termination, unlawful job discrimination and retaliation.  In 1988, she became a partner in the law firm of Davis, Reno & Courtney in San Francisco, representing individuals and union clients including IFPTE Local 21, SEIU, SF Building & Construction Trades Council, Carpenters Local 22, SF Police Officers' Association, SF Firefighters Local 798, Hawaii Government Employees Association (HGEA) and others.  She and her husband established Courtney Law Offices in 1998.  Sylvia taught night classes at SF Community College on the subject of employment discrimination for 10 years, and served on the SF Juvenile Justice Commission, and on the boards of various community organizations such as Mission Community Legal Defense (MCLD).Sylvia and Vince Courtney are now residents of Las Vegas, still spending as much time as possible in the San Francisco Bay Area which will always be home and are proud of Nevada's position as a "blue" state which has made a great deal of progress toward increasing the access of people of color to good paying jobs with career progression in many important sectors, such as the unionized construction and h hospitality industries of Las Vegas.  While she has spent many years in the effort to advance the causes of working people and particularly people of color, and laments the divisiveness threatening the nation's progress, Sylvia has hope for the future arising from two phenomena in particular:  1)  We have had conflicts and divisions throughout our history and still continue to make progress, however difficult, and 2) Today's youth of the country are more tolerant of racial, ethnic and gender differences, more aware of the threats to their lives of climate change and the proliferation of guns, and more likely to be committed to change because their lives will depend on it.  As a grandmother of two boys and a girl in their late twenties, who are proud of their Irish and Mexican heritage, Sylvia believes that it is just as important, and perhaps more important, to pass on knowledge, perspective and commitment to members of one's own family as to anyone else, inasmuch as the youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow. On behalf of HealthCare UnTold we thank and honor Sylvia for sharing her incredible career with us..Gracias Sylvia for your activism and commitment to justice for our communities.

John points out that the rallies on the 19th were historic, involving diverse speakers from left and right all coming together to end war. The time is too precious and too limited to exclude any voice for peace and if that requires single-issue rallies and protests then that is what we must do. We include speeches Anya Parampil and a dramatic speech from Tulsi Gabbard.

After seeing last week's episode summary that acknowledged the strange timing of women's reproductive health being threatened on the same week we celebrate Mother's Day, a friend shared Heather Cox Richardson's newsletter written on the eve of Mother's Day. I felt compelled to share the history of the original Mothers' Day and Julia Ward Howe's conviction that women must make their voices heard.   May we all continue to promote women's right to have a say in American government. May we honor Howe's strong belief that women, as mothers, have a special role to perform in the world. May the mothers of mankind have the courage to interfere in the madness. May I, and all mothers, continue to teach our children charity, mercy, and patience. May I and all mothers, be too tender of those of another country to allow our children to be trained to injure people from another country. May Mama Bears throughout the world be inspired by Julia Ward Howe's devotion to creating the next great development in human history, a lasting Women's Peace Movement!  Enjoy the podcast!
