In this episode of Southern Mysteries, explore the haunting history of institutions like Broughton Hospital, Cherry Hospital, Central State, and Bryce. From mysterious deaths and forced sterilizations to the tragedy of the Eller twins and the lifetime confinement of Junius Wilson, these are the real horrors that gave rise to Southern asylum ghost stories — and the suffering that still echoes through their halls. Brian Stettin, senior advisor on severe mental illness for the Office of the New York City Mayor, and Michael F. Hogan, PhD, consultant at Hogan Health Solutions and New York State Commissioner of Mental Health from 2007-2012, debate whether the city and state's policy of involuntarily hospitalizing New Yorkers displaying signs of severe mental illness is humane and effective ahead of the November mayoral election.
Folks, I was doing the math this morning… and I've come to a startling conclusion. I would hate to be a Democrat. No, really. I mean, I would genuinely rather have a spontaneous root canal performed by a mechanic with a cordless drill than be a registered Democrat in the year of our Lord 2025. This is, without hyperbole, the absolute worst time in history to be a member of that party. And I'm including the whole “Civil War, split the nation in two” era. At least back then Democrats had convictions. They hated Black people, but now they hate all people. The media ignore the stabbing of a Ukrainian refugee in North Carolina…and the reason is perfectly predictable; after the president authorizes the destruction of a boat carrying Venezuelan drug traffickers, Democrats (and a few Republicans) don sackcloth and ashes; and Chicago remains on edge as Trump prepares for a federal intervention. It took a horrible murder for Alaska to revise its statutes for the criminally insane from some of the most lenient sentencing laws in the country to the strictest laws in the U.S. for the insanity defense. On the night of May 3, 1982, one veteran Anchorage police officer was quoted as saying, “This has got to be one of the grisliest nights I've ever seen.” Within an hour, seven people lost their lives. Three died in the Black Bull bar in the Muldoon section of Anchorage, and the other four were shot in Russian Jack Springs Park in East Anchorage. At first, investigators wondered if the two crime scenes were connected, but they soon learned nothing linked the two horrific events. Sources Ice Cold Killers Season Two, Episode One: Blood Red Sun. Is America Making Us Mentally Ill? The Emotional Toll of Life in the USA Are you emotionally exhausted just living in America right now? You're not alone. From climate disasters and political chaos to daily horrors in the headlines, the U.S. feels like a never-ending rollercoaster — and it's crushing our mental health. In this episode of The Karel Cast, I open up about my own struggles: the fear of leaving, the hope that maybe midterms will help, and the exhaustion of trying to find joy in a country constantly in crisis. Is it possible to stay sane in a place that feels increasingly unhinged? Let's talk about the toll it's taking — and what we can do about it.

A quiet suburb. A brutal murder. What happens when someone kills - but isn’t sane enough to be found guilty? Marita Cunningham was charged with murdering 81-year-old May Richie in 2016. A neighbour discovered May dead inside her apartment, her body covered in pillows and shopping bags. An autopsy found she’d died by asphyxiation and had been beaten with her own walking cane. Marita was arrested trying to flee the scene. Witnesses described Marita’s unsettling behaviour earlier that day, including outbursts in public, talking to herself, and showing up at her ex’s apartment uninvited. The court had to decide whether Marita was guilty of murder – or not guilty by virtue of mental illness. Should someone who kills, but genuinely doesn’t know reality from delusion, be found guilty of murder? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Sometimes, you are so consumed by caring for a loved one with a serious mental illness, like schizophrenia or bipolar disorder, that taking a moment for yourself feels like a betrayal. In this episode, host Gabe Howard and Dr. C. Alec Pollard reveal the hidden crisis of caregiver burnout in the world of serious mental illness. They dismantle the myth that self-care is selfish, showing how neglecting your own needs can worsen stress and strain the very relationships you cherish. Dr. Pollard dives into the toxic beliefs that trap caregivers—those who support individuals with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and other severe conditions—into a cycle of resentment and exhaustion. With breakthrough strategies and compassionate advice, this episode offers a wake-up call for anyone feeling overwhelmed by the relentless demands of caregiving. Learn how nurturing yourself not only protects your well-being but also empowers you to care more effectively for your loved one. Funding for this episode was provided by Evernorth Health Services. “If you can do no good, at least do no harm. A lot of the, the things that families don't understand and caregivers is that they're actually doing things that not only they know it doesn't work okay. When they're doing these things, these naggings and lectures and all that, they know it's not working. But what they may not appreciate is it's actually making things worse over time.” ~C. Alec Pollard, PhD Our guest, C. Alec Pollard, Ph.D., is Founding Director of the Center for OCD and Anxiety-Related Disorders at Saint Louis Behavioral Medicine Institute and Professor Emeritus of Family and Community Medicine at Saint Louis University School of Medicine. Mental health care in America has become nothing short of atrocious. Supposed developments in treatment methods and medication remain inaccessible to those who need them most. Countless people seeking treatment are routinely funneled into homelessness and prison while a mental-health epidemic ravages younger generations. It seems obvious that the system is broken, but critics say the tragic truth is that it is actually functioning exactly as intended, providing reliably enormous profits for the entities who now manage mental health care. By taking a step back and examining how and why we developed our health-care system, with mental health care as the worst-case example of a dysfunctional model that has been abandoned by all other developed countries, we can understand our motives and actions, and chart a way out of our mess. About the Speaker Nicholas Rosenlicht, M.D., is clinical professor at the University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. Is Lori Vallow Mentally Ill or Legally Responsible? Motta Dissects the Case What if one of America's most infamous convicted killers got a second chance to defend herself—and actually did a halfway decent job? In Lori Vallow Daybell's Arizona trial, the once-apocalyptic mom ditched the theatrics and came surprisingly prepared. No doomsday visions. No courtroom outbursts. Just a self-represented defendant who, shockingly, managed to land a few arguments. Defense attorney Bob Motta joins to dissect Lori's unexpected legal performance, the prosecution's late-inning rally, and the judge's tightrope walk between patience and control. Why did this seven-day trial feel like it could have gone either way? What role did circumstantial evidence—and the things the jury didn't hear—really play? Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
Send me a one-way text about this episode! I'll give you a shout out or answer your question on a future episode.I am chatting with seasoned homemaker, Georgetta Christensen, who was nominated by her daughter Lydia Vest. Here's some of what Lydia had to say about her mom. “My mother used every opportunity available to spread the Gospel, to be a light-—from our neighbors, teachers, the pest control guy, and anyone who came into our home! She was ready to share and build genuine relationships.” From my time spent interviewing Georgetta, I can absolutely see her passion for spreading the love and good news of Jesus through her homemaking. She has faithfully served her family in the home for over 4 decades, through many trials and very difficult situations. As we discuss everything from simple daily challenges of running a home to navigating a severe mental health crisis with her son, Georgetta is always quick to acknowledge God's provision and goodness through it all. A Tippecanoe County high school brings home a world championship award in robotics. A process that's meant to evaluate whether someone is competent to stand trial may get some people with severe mental illness stuck in jail for months. Sarah got her meds adjusted and she is riding the high of that sweet testosterone that is making her feel some kind of way. All of the sudden she isn't so judgy towards men. What's up with that??? We hear about the amazing investigative journalist that blew the lid of off of mistreatment for mentally ill patients and people unfairly placed into mental hospitals in the 1800s. Pittsburgh's own Nelly Bly is our badass bitch of the week with her moxie, courage, and fortitude, and we are hoping for more of that today. We learn why the US gave 11 bison to the Canadian first nations, and how it's meant to make up for past harms. We discuss the Oscars, why Sarah didn't know how to feel about Kieran Culkin's acceptance speech and why Demi Moore's movie Substance disturbed her. We hear why the eyeballs actually are windows to the soul, or at least the brain, and how they can reveal disease.Listen to more podcasts like this: https://wavepodcastnetwork.comJoin our Candy Club, shop our merch, sign-up for our free newsletter, & more by visiting The Brain Candy Podcast website: https://www.thebraincandypodcast.comConnect with us on social media:BCP Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/braincandypodcastSusie's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/susiemeisterSarah's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/imsarahriceBCP on X: https://www.x.com/braincandypodSponsors:Cancel your unwanted subscriptions and reach your financial goals faster with Rocket Money. In today's episode, the guys discuss mentally ill demons named Gerald. Joe educates us on the lost art of drumming (apparently, it requires less effort than blinking), while Reese details his gravity-defying stage antics that may or may not have been demonically inspired. We also learn that Reese's luggage was stolen, but thankfully, the thief spared the Five Iron Frenzy banner—because even criminals have standards.
