Our long-time listeners know that The Wolf & Action Jackson have a special place in their hearts for the music of 80s pop/rock supergroup Asia. Asia's eponymous debut album was the top selling album in the US in 1982 and spent 9 weeks at the top of the chart thanks to hits like Sole Survivor, Only Time Will Tell and the #1 smash Heat Of The Moment. With John Wetton on bass & vocals, Steve Howe on guitar, Geoff Downes on keyboards and Carl Palmer on drums, Asia achieved great success and would go onto have many incarnations over the years. And though the original band did reunite for their 25th anniversary and release more albums, the death of John Wetton in 2017 left Asia in an uncertain place for the band and its fans. However, thanks to YouTube, Geoff Downes came across the talent of Harry Whitley - a Welsh multi-instrumentalist who put up some Asia performances from his home which really captured the spirit of John Wetton. From there, Geoff invited Harry to perform at the tribute to John Wetton at Trading Boundaries in the summer of 2023. The songs went down so well that Geoff eventually invited Harry to join Asia on a tour of the US in 2024. We tracked down Harry in New Jersey between gigs and talked to him about all of these amazing steps that led to him becoming the new lead singer of Asia, what it means to sing John's songs and how he's enjoying his first real trip to the US. We think you'll find Harry to be an open and down-to-earth young man who was candid in his answers. And as a bonus, guitarist John Mitchell also participated on the call as he was waiting for his room to be readied and he provided some fun comic relief. We cover as much as we could, including having Harry answer the question of a 10 year old Asia fan and if you stick around long enough, you might hear a bit of bonus material that had everyone laughing. The bottomline is if you have the chance to see this incarnation of Asia, don't miss it as we know any Asia fan will love it! Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller After a short break, Mark and I are back to consider what Geoff Downes was doing before being asked to rejoin Yes for the recording of Fly From Here, released in 2011, shortly before the Yes Music Podcast was established. We have been listening to the John Wetton album, Raised in Captivity which includes many prog rock heroes so listen out for our thoughts on that and what, if anything, we learned about why Geoff was re-recruited. Can we tell why Yes wanted Geoff Downes from this record? What do all those guests add? Is it a good record? Let us know if you agree with us! I received an amazing email this week - or was it last week I can't remember - informing me that Yes The Tormato Story has been shortlisted for a Selfie Award. These are handed out for self-published books so I think it has a lot more to do with the work Izzie Lawrence (cover designer), Bob Carling (production management and typesetting) and Simon Barrow (all round legend who kept me on track) had to do with it than me. It's also down to Mark, every Executive Producer, newsletter subscriber, pre-order-er, supporter, YMP listener, producer and patron and everyone else who had any role in its creation - see the full acknowledgements page in the book for more details. Anyway, I have to go to the London Book Fair in a couple of weeks' time to see if the book wins in the general non fiction category so keep your fingers crossed, please. https://youtu.be/8mfLQxwtwy8?si=_6Cm6fHMkoYFz5ir Check out the progress on my other podcast - https://anthem52.com/ Support the Fundraiser! Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Jeffrey Crecelius and Ken Fuller This week, Mark and I talked about the situation in Yes at the time Geoff Downes rejoined for Fly From Here - around 2010-11. It's a contentious time - but then again when isn't with Yes? Oliver Wakeman had to make way for the return of Downes who had worked very closely with Steve Howe in Asia for many years and, when Trevor Horn was brought in to produce the new album, perhaps the writing was on the wall for a Downes redux. All was not well between certain other members of the band either... Why did Geoff return (trip)? Whose idea was it? Why was Oliver Wakeman 'let go'? Geoff Downes & Chris Braide from The Downes Braide Association talk to Phil Aston about the new DBA album Celestial Songs. I talk to Geoff and Chris about the new album looking in depth at each track in turn and also talk about the creative process and the album themes. Downes Braide Association, a collaboration between Geoff Downes and Chris Braide, has delivered four acclaimed studio albums: Pictures Of You (2012), Suburban Ghosts (2015), Skyscraper Souls (2017), Halcyon Hymns (2021), and the live album Live In England (2019). This duo seamlessly blends their vast musical experiences to craft a unique progressive rock sound. Geoff Downes skyrocketed to fame with the global hit "Video Killed The Radio Star" in 1979 as part of The Buggles. He briefly joined YES and later co-founded the supergroup Asia, producing hits like "Heat Of The Moment". Downes rejoined YES in 2011, continuing his legacy alongside Steve Howe. Chris Braide, a British singer-songwriter-pianist, has made waves in the music industry from California to the UK. With credits including work with Sia, Lana Del Rey, and Beyonce, Braide's talent is undeniable. An Ivor Novello award-winner and Grammy-nominated artist, he recently clinched a BMI Pop Award for co-writing Sia's hit "Unstoppable".
1982 saw the birth of the 80s first supergroup with Asia made of prog legends John Wetton (King Crimson, Uriah Heep, UK), Steve Howe (Yes), Geoff Downes (Buggles, Yes) and Carl Palmer (ELP). They achieved great success with their eponymous first album thanks to the worldwide sensation Heat of the Moment and some Godley & Creme videos that ruled MTV. Asia was the #1 selling record in the US that year and to capitalize on that momentum, the band were rushed back to the studio to crank out a follow up for 1983. While 1983's Alpha did contain some of the magic from the first record, the band were disappointed in the process and the end result. Despite a big budget video with an Indiana Jones theme and a radio hit in Don't Cry, Alpha didn't achieve the same success as it's predecessor. However, Geffen pushed the band forward and coordinated the first ever live satellite concert on MTV with the historic Asia in Asia event broadcast from Japan in December, 1983 with VJ Mark Goodman hosting. Last year we were fortunate enough to speak with both Carl Palmer and Geoff Downes about their time in Asia and the stage and setup for that historic concert. It may not quite have the same magic of the first album but it still holds a special place in our hearts so listen with an open mind and hear from the musicians that made the album and history via MTV. Keyboardist Geoff Downes guests on this brand new Fake Show with host Jim Tofte...enjoy!!!
Two interviews with Geoff Downes of Yes. The first, from August, 2016, ahead of their Milwaukee, WI, concert playing the entirety of "Drama" as part of "The Album Series" -- he talks about that and keyboards. The second, from May, 2023, on the date of the release of the Yes album "Mirror To The Sky" -- he talks about the songs and musicianship the album.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
What's up, dudes? It's a prog rock Christmas! Yes, we're talking Chris Squire and Alan White's “Run with the Fox!” This single along with B-side “Return of the Fox” was recorded and released in 1981 on Atlantic Records. The song is a masterclass on pedal point, syncopation, and suspended chords, with a driving beat and occasional mixed meter just to keep things interesting.Chris Squire and Alan White played bass and drums respectively for progressive rock band Yes, and co-wrote the Christmas song with King Crimson lyricist Peter Sinfield. How? You ask. Well, Yes frontman Jon Anderson and keyboardist Rick Wakeman had left the group in 1980, replaced by Geoff Downes and Trevor Horn from The Buggles. After an album and tour, Yes disbanded in ‘81 and Squire and White continued to work together, composing “Return of the Fox” with Squire on vocals. Naturally it got a lot of airplay through the ‘80s and early ‘90s during the Christmas season.Synths? Check. Pedal tones? Yup. Obscure metaphoric lyrics? Definitely! So grab your bass, call your backup choir, and run with this episode!Check us out on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Totally Rad Christmas Mall & Arcade, Teepublic.com, or TotallyRadChristmas.com! Later, dudes!
This is my second sit-down interview with Trevor Horn and you'll hear why it's nothing like the first time. The previous one (episode 43) made an impression with Wikipedia's editors, who included Trevor's “I believe in Judaism, more than I believe in anything else” as a reference. On leaving last time, Trevor told me at the door, "no one ever asked me about that before". In this in-depth conversation about his life and career, Trevor talks about growing up as a post-war baby boomer in Hetton-le-Hole and how the family left the Durham village to secure their future in the more prosperous midlands (as my own family had done a generation before). We discuss Paul McCartney's constant reinvention as the key to longevity and his own determination to keep working. Then there's Rod and the magnificent orchestral album, his most recent production. Trevor also pays a touching tribute to his late wife, Jill Sinclair, “the first person who told me I was good. There's also a couple of Jewish jokes she used to tell him too. And we expand on his religious beliefs, how Shabbat is a “great idea” and reading the Torah illuminating. Trevor's been touring the US as Seal's musical director with support band, The Buggles, reuniting with his old friend, Geoff Downes. It was their number one hit, “Video Killed The Radio Star” which propelled him to fame before he became a producer on Jill's recommendation. There's a stem-by-stem analysis of the brilliant “whiz bang” noises of Owner of a Lonely Heart, The Art of Noise, ABC's band manifesto, the Belfast Child of The Simple Minds and why Two Tribes by Frankie Goes to Hollywood sounds like the Hatikvah, Israel's national anthem! I had another hour of questions for Trevor, but I hope this gives you a snapshot of what a talented and modest man he is, and why I've been a fan since my teenage years. Dear Listener, this is Trevor Horn II. Jonny Gould's Jewish State is brought to you with Dangoor Education.

Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Ken Fuller, Wayne Hall and Jeffrey Crecelius In a change to the advertised episode, Mark and I thought it was essential to give our thoughts on the new Yes single Cut From The Stars so most of this episode is devoted to the best new Yes music for many years. How does this new Yes music compare to The Quest? Does it sound progressive? Does it increase the anticipation for the new album? https://youtu.be/5WSqjH6mFhk YES announce new studio album ‘Mirror To The Sky' for release 19th May 2023; launch first single ‘Cut From The Stars' YES, who are Steve Howe, Geoff Downes, Jon Davison, Billy Sherwood & Jay Schellen, are pleased to announce their new studio album Mirror To The Sky on InsideOutMusic/Sony Music on the 19th May 2023. “This is a very important album for the band,” says Steve Howe, Yes' longest serving member, master guitarist, and producer of Mirror To The Sky. “We kept the continuity in the approach we established on The Quest, but we haven't repeated ourselves. That was the main thing. As Yes did in the seventies from one album to another, we're growing and moving forward. In later years, Yes often got going but then didn't do the next thing. This album is demonstrative of us growing, and building again.” For Yes, that “next thing” is a collection of high energy, intricate, lush and layered new studio songs for an album which adds to the band's much heralded legacy, while charting a path to exciting future times ahead. Today also sees the launch of the first track taken from the album. Magic Potion 04:08 As they were wrapping up The Quest, Yes found themselves with song sketches, structures, and ideas that were demanding attention. Yes received unconditional support from InsideOut boss Thomas Waber, who encouraged them to keep going in the studio, months before The Quest would even go on sale. It was like throwing gasoline on their creative fire. “When we delivered everything, and they were just getting the vinyl and everything into production for manufacturing, we were still very much in that creative zone,” explains Steve Howe. “That belief that Thomas had in us really meant a lot,” he says. “We truly get along as people,” says Jon Davison. “I feel like everyone's focused inward to the greater circle, concentric to the core of highest standards that define Yes. It's a wonderful thing to witness and of which to play a part. I believe this reflects vibrantly in the music and the creative input that each one is willing to apply, not for the benefit of the individual, but for the greater whole that is Yes.” “There was a lot of material floating around because the band hadn't done anything in the studio for so long. Ideas were just copious,” says bassist Billy Sherwood. “The pace of it was fast. As soon as we were finished with The Quest, and the mix had come out, we took a couple of little breaks there to catch our breath. But there was still music flowing around in the loop. It was just constantly being looked at and worked on. As we were all home and in that mode,
Produced by Joseph Cottrell, Ken Fuller, Wayne Hall and Jeffrey Crecelius While Kevin is on holiday with his family, Mark flies solo and brings us some of the most important talking points of the week including the news that Jay Schellen has been named as the permanent replacement in Yes for Alan White. Also, Mark mentions what's coming up for Yes fans in this year's Record Store Day and more! What are your thoughts on the appointment of Jay Schellen? What do you think he will bring to Yes' writing? What would you like Yes to release for Record Store Day? 15th February 2023: YES are delighted to announce that drummer Jay Schellen has joined the band as a permanent member. Following the sad passing of our iconic drummer, Alan White on 26th May 2022, Jay will fulfil Alan's wishes in becoming the new drummer with YES. Jay Schellen was Alan White's choice to stand in during the Topographic Drama tour, in 2016, and shared drumming duties with him from 2018 onwards. Jay had previously played alongside YES' keyboardist Geoff Downes and late bassist Chris Squire together with long working relationships with Alan and YES bass guitarist Billy Sherwood. This gave Jay a deep insight into the workings of the dynamic rhythm section that drives YES' music. Steve Howe says “We're all delighted to welcome Jay officially into the fold! He's been a great support throughout the last seven years, and we couldn't have found a better all round team player.” “I am thrilled to become the new drummer with YES,” says Jay. “I grew up playing along to YES records and I am proud to have worked so closely with my musical hero and great friend Alan White these past few years. I will strive to honour his memory as we drive towards the future with the band.”Jay Schellen TormatoBook.com YMP Patrons: Producers: Joseph Cottrell Ken Fuller Jeffrey Crecelius and Wayne Hall Patrons: Aaron SteelmanDave OwenMark James LangPaul TomeiJoost MaglevDavid HeydenPaul WilsonMartin KjellbergBob MartilottaLindMichael O'ConnorWilliam HayesBrian SullivanDavid PannellLobate ScarpMiguel FalcãoChris BandiniDavid WatkinsonNeal KaforeyRachel HadawayCraig EstenesDemMark 'Zarkol' BaggsPaul HailesDoug CurranRobert NasirFergus CubbageScott ColomboFred BarringerDavidGeoff BailieSimon BarrowGeoffrey MasonStephen LambeGuy R DeRomeSteve DillHenrik AntonssonSteve PerryHogne Bø PettersenSteve RodeDeclan LogueSteve ScottTodd DudleyJimJamie McQuinnSteven RoehrJohn ParryKeith HoisingtonAlan BeggTerence SadlerJohn HoldenBarry GorskyMichael HanderhanTim StannardJon PicklesJohn ThomsonJohn CowanTony HandleyRobertGary BettsJim Morrison Facebook has changed how pages work which means that I've had to establish a new place for us to post and discuss Yes-related happenings. 2022 was a great year for our show as we became a part of Pantheon Podcasts, gained an amazing sponsor in RareVinyl.com and welcomed artists and musicians who we have loved and admired for years. On Part 2 of our 2022 in Review shows, we talk about how excited we were to welcome folks we've been fans of for decades like Geoff Downes (Yes, Asia), Carl Palmer (Asia, ELP), Chris Slade (AC/DC, The Firm, David Gilmour), Steve Hackett (Genesis), Guy Pratt (Pink Floyd, David Gilmour) and Gary Kemp (Spandau Ballet, Nick Mason). Hear our reactions to some of the stories from these great artists! But we also had the chance to speak with artists we've just come to know recently like Amanda Lehmann (Steve Hackett), Deobrah Bonham & Peter Bullick, Jim Cregan (Rod Stewart) and Autumn Hawk Percival. We had a wonderful time learning about what they've been up to recently, talking about their music and what they're going to be up to in 2023. At 12:01am on August 1, 1981 – MTV opened its debut broadcast with the perfectly titled “Video Killed the Radio Star.” Written several years earlier in 1978, Buggles co-founders Geoff Downes, and Trevor Horn, along with former bandmate Bruce Wooley saw the future of popular music and culture, writing a nostalgic and yet apathetic reaction to the technological age ahead, and wrapping this reflection in the shimmering sounds of studio technology's newest developments. Produced by Ken Fuller, Wayne Hall and Jeffrey Crecelius What a week it's been in the world of Yes. Thanks to friend of the YMP Roie Avin, I managed to speak to Steve Howe about his new album with his late son Virgil, Lunar Mist as well as the US tour which began yesterday with a preview concert. (Don't worry, I managed to slip in a question about Tormato as well.) YMP Producer Ken Fuller went along to the dress rehearsal and I've added his photos from the event to the show notes for this week. The gig took place at Mickey's Black Box, part of long-time Yes collaborator Michael Tait's empire also known as the Rock Lititz campus in Philadelphia. In fact Michael introduced the band and spoke about his connections with Yes. (Incidentally he is now retired.) Also this week Doug Curran was at the wonderful Alan White tribute concert in Seattle which featured Trevor Rabin, Billy Sherwood, Jon Davison, Geoff Downes, Jay Schellen and a host of other stars. A truly moving event to remember a truly remarkable person. Add to all this the announcement of concert dates for Jon Anderson and the Band Geeks in 2023 complete with a great video of the whole band in action together. Actually I think it's a composite video using some clever remote recording but whatever the case, it all sounds fantastic. Fingers crossed they are able to visit the UK. How does Lunar Mist complement Nexus?Who decided what Tormato should be called? How is touring? Take a listen to the episode and then let us know what you think below! It is again with heavy hearts that we deliver this week's episode about yet another fallen drummer: the amazing Mr. Alan White. The YES drummer passed away on May 26, 2022, at the age of 72 after dealing with some more recent illnesses. Kevin has a very deep connection to YES and Alan as a lifelong fan and student of their music. While not an obscure band by any means (the Rock & Roll Hall-of-Famers have sold 13.5 million RIAA-certified albums in the US, as well as more than 30 million albums worldwide and in 1985, they won a Grammy award), Alan had a number of side projects and collaborations during his 50-year tenure with YES. Another tough loss for the classic and progressive rock community.New to InObscuria? Typically, what we do is exhume obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In the case of this particular episode, we are leaning towards the LOST. We are paying tribute to another titan of rock drummers! Rest In Peace Alan. Geoff Downes was a key part of two monumental moments on MTV. As a member of The Buggles, he was in the first video ever played on MTV in August 1981 with Video Killed the Radio Star. In 1983, he and his fellow Asia bandmates were part of the first live satellite broadcast of a concert on cable TV.As the current keyboardist in YES, he's about to embark on a tour to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Close to the Edge and they will play in it its entirety. Just before our interview, we learned of the tragic passing of long time YES drummer Alan White and we discuss Geoff's friendship with Alan, what Close to the Edge meant to him as a college student and why he's looking forward to the tour.We also discuss the Asia in Asia box set being released June 10 which captures that amazing moment in time from December 1983 when Asia were bounced off of satellites around the globe to entertain the MTV generation. Produced by Wayne Hall and Jeffrey Crecelius I was on the road this week but still managed to catch up with Mark and Henry Potts to discuss the news that Yes will not be playing Relayer on the upcoming tour but have opted to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Close To The Edge instead. I was in a hotel room with just my laptop but this news was clearly too important to miss. Why has Relayer been shelved? Will we ever hear the full album live?Is it too soon to play Close To The Edge in its entirety again? Listen to the episode and let us know what you think! PRESS RELEASE: 50th Anniversary Celebration of Close to the Edge for UK The Album Series Tour in June 8th March 2022: Progressive pioneers YES have announced a change to their forthcoming The Album Series Tour 2022 as they will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their iconic album Close to the Edge. This tour, twice rescheduled due to the Covid pandemic was intended to showcase YES's 1974 classic Relayer album but will now feature Close to the Edge, performed in full, along with other classic tracks from YES's extensive catalogue. An announcement regarding the European dates will be made shortly. The tour line-up features Steve Howe (guitars), Alan White (drums), Geoff Downes (keyboards), Jon Davison (vocals), Billy Sherwood (bass guitar and backing vocals) with additional drums and percussion by Jay Schellen. All tour dates are as previously announced and all tickets remain valid. A full performance of the Relayer album will now be featured in a future tour in The Album Series. The show will comprise full production and a high-definition video wall directed by Roger Dean who will also be joining the tour with an exhibition of YES related art. Following the release of The Yes Album and Fragile, in 1971, YES released what is widely considered one of the most defining albums, not only for YES but for the whole progressive movement. Close to the Edge became an inspiration for their contemporaries and for successive generations of musicians. “We reached a real high, doing ‘Close to the Edge',” said Steve Howe. “We valued the musicianship, the artistic ideas and the vocalising that people bring and that's why we're still doing it, because it's exciting to do! ‘Close to the Edge' was voted the most-proggy album possibly ever made. It was very experimental. We had already done 10-minute epics but with ‘Close to the Edge' we just took it a stage further and I'm very pleased we were brave enough to do that.” YES 2022 UK Tour Dates Are: June 2022 15th June Wednesday Glasgow Royal Concert Hall 17th June Friday Manchester Bridgewater Hall 18th June Saturday Nottingham Royal Concert Hall 20th June Monday Liverpool Philharmonic Hall 21st June Tuesday London Royal Albert Hall 22nd June Thursday York Barbican 24th June Friday Birmingham Symphony Hall 26th June Sunday Newcastle O2 City Hall 28th June Tuesday Dublin Eire Vicar Street 29th June Wednesday Cork Eire Opera House Tickets remain valid for the rescheduled shows.
