What's up, dudes? I've got Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas and Scott Leopold from Holly Jolly X'masu here to talk the folksy prog rock band Jethro Tull. We break down two of the Christmas songs by Jethro Tull: “Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow” and “Another Christmas Song.” The British rock band formed in Blackpool, Lancashire in 1967. Their music is marked by the initially soulful and bluesy, and later expressively idiosyncratic, vocal style and unique lead flute work of frontman Ian Anderson, and their notable guitarist Martin Barre. Of course, their songs feature unusual and often complex construction, incorporating elements of classical and celtic folk music, as well as art rock and alternative rock. They subsequently beat Metallica in the ‘89 Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock/Metal Performance Vocal or Instrumental in what was widely viewed as an upset over the favorite, Metallica's ...And Justice for All. Ian Anderson composed “Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow,” and the band originally recorded it in ‘81 for the Broadsword and the Beast album (although it was left off). The 5/4 metered song is more folk rock-inspired with synthesizers. “Another Christmas Song” was also written by Ian Anderson. The band Included the song on the Rock Island album on side B, and eventually released it as a single on December 4, 1989. Flute? Yep. Folk and fantasy themes? Uh huh. Heavy metal and hard rock? Nope. Not at all. Sorry. So grab your flute, strike a flamingo pose, and listen to this episode on Jethro Tull “Jack Frost and the Hooded Crow!”Sounds of ChristmasFB: @SOCMusicTwitter: @SOCMusicIG: @socmusicHolly Jolly X'masuFB: @HollyJollyXmasuTwitter: @HollyJollyXmasuIG: @hollyjollyxmasuGive us a buzz! Text us about this show.Dave Schoepke is one talented guy. He's a drummer who composes songs for drums and creates some interesting and innovative albums comprised of these songs. On top of that he is the other half of Willy Porter's rhythm section (along with bassist Eric Madunic) and he's an accomplished drum teacher who has his methods published by Hal Leonard Publishing. He's drummed behind Jethro Tull guitarist Martin Barre and more recently found himself pounding the skins in US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis as part of Sundown47 opening for Zach Bryan. You'd think this would expand one's ego, but hardly so with Dave. He simply enjoys drumming and sharing what he has to offer through his albums, performances, and teaching. For more about Dave, visit his website at daveschoepke.com."Spiraling Transmuter" written and performed by Dave Schoepke℗ 2024 Dave Schoepke. Send us a Text Message. Jethro Tull is one of the stranger turns taken by rock music over more than 50 years. Mick and Jeff look back at some of the band's best work, and, maybe, some of their strangest. The “Album You Must Hear Before You Die” is Queen II, a sensational album released the year before Queen took over the world! Both Mick & Jeff love it! Jeff takes a look at what AI is doing to music. We're not worried, because, as Joe Walsh says, AI can't even trash a hotel room! While he's at it, he then looks at who is “knocking on Heaven's door” this month. Yet another very full episode! What does your salary have to be to be considered rich in Connecticut? How much do CT residents pay in taxes over their lifetime? The answers are depressing but many of us are in the same boat. Jethro Tull guitarist Martin Barre calls the I-95 Morning Show for a chat about life & music. Thousands gather in NYC's Union Square to watch a man eat cheeseballs. Jerry Seinfeld on how to be funny without being offensive. The I-95 Morning Show Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame correspondant Sal Cirrincione checks in to examine the 2024 class. Two Connecticut football players get drafted into the NFL. Roger Goodell's new schedule proposal is a win with fans everywhere.
Original member of Jethro Tull Martin Barre is coming to the Ridgefield Playhouse. Ahead of his CT gig, Barre called in to chat with the boys. We talked about being British and the impact the accent has on American women. Barre speaks about the two weeks Tony Iommi spent in the band back in the 60's. We learned that Leslie West had a ton of influence over Martin's life.

Martin Barre is best known as the guitarist in the legendary classic rock band, Jethro Tull. One of my favorite bands. Martin and Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull parted ways awhile ago and Martin's current project is the Martin Barre Band. We talk about his new(er) band, the split between he and Ian, some behind the scenes takes on some of Tull's legendary recordings and more!
Neste episódio, Luiz Antonio Mello fala sobre o Show do Guitarrista Martin Barre, integrante da super banda Jethro Tull, que está comemorando 50 anos do álbum Aqualung.
REM are often viewed by casual listeners as a lighter-style rock band. This is deceptive, with the band offering complex songs with obscure lyrics, brilliant playing, covers, and an incredible refusal to compromise. The boys talk through REM's development from their rock cliche start – the singer, Michael Stipe, met guitarist Peter Buck in the record shop where Buck worked - to their becoming one of the biggest-ever bands in the world – all without selling out. MOJO Magazine called them an ensemble growl adorned with heavenly harmonies which describes perfectly how their beautiful melodies, with disaffected, jaded lyrics, were influenced by The Velvet Underground. In turn they influenced such key bands as Nirvana and Pavement, as well as Radiohead, Coldplay, Pearl Jam, The Pixies and The Smiths. Our “Album You Must Hear before You Die” is 1971's “Aqualung” by Jethro Tull. It's a special album of contrast full of brave variations – from gentle acoustic breaks to Martin Barre's power chords and Ian Anderson's tough vocals. The Dickensian quality of many of the lyrics challenges organised religion. Mick & Jeff both have great memories of this album, including the night that Jeff's keyboard player from his band, Ocean, blew the crowd away with the piano intro lifted from “Locomotive Breath” during a show south of Sydney. We look at The Stones' new album, “Hackney Diamonds”, their first in 18 years. Jeff thinks it's pretty good, but Mick still keeps comparing every new Stones record to “Exiles on Main Street”. Jeff brings some bad news. The Bored Ape Yacht Club, famed distributor of NFTs (as credible as digital currency!) has gone belly-up, driving another nail into the digital con artist industry. Martin Barre the guitarist of Jethro Tull for over 43 years, his sound and playing was a major factor in their success. Album sales have exceeded 60 million units and they continue to be played worldwide, representing an important part of classic rock history. Martin's guitar playing has earned him a high level of respect and recognition; he was voted 25th best solo ever in the USA and 20th best solo ever in the UK for his playing on ‘Aqualung'. His playing on the album ‘Crest of a Knave' earned him a Grammy award in 1989. Martin has put together a band to play the “classic” music from the Tull catalogue. Guitarist Martin Barre was an integral part of English band Jethro Tull for many years and had been joined at the hip with founder, Ian Anderson since 1969. The two had a massive falling out which led to the band breaking up in 2011 but Martin refused to lay down his guitar and today travels solo with his own band making wonderful music. We catch up with Martin to discover the roots of Jethro Tull and how being in that band, changed him forever. American singer, Merrilee Rush is best known for her song "Angel of the Morning", a top-10 hit which earned her a Grammy nomination for female vocalist of the year in 1968. This week we meet Merilee to hear the incredible story behind that song and to get to know a little more about the woman who insisted on singing it. Ahoy listeners! This week strap in for a 4-hour tour to the bottom of the sea of completely self-indulgent noodling… nah, just kidding! We have raided the Prog Rock crypt, yet we've prepared a bite-size slab of the genre that pushes the boundaries of rock music with a diverse mix of, well… everything! Kevin's prog-rock cruise that was postponed in 2020 is finally setting sail this week, so we thought we'd feature several of the artists that will be featured on the ship. What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Prog rock in the 60s and 70s initially had mostly classical music and jazz influences, but over the last 40-years, it has come to include other fusions of music styles including metal, punk, funk, folk, and electronic. From Zappa and Sgt. Pepper to today's Djent and Post-Prog movements… This is Prog Rock! Get yer nerd on!Songs this week include:Riverside – “Rainbow Box” from Rapid Eye Movement (2007)Transatlantic – “Rainbow Sky” from The Absolute Universe: Forevermore (2021)Wishbone Ash – “The King Will Come” from Argus (1972) District 97 – “Stay For The Ending” from Many New Things (2022)Pain Of Salvation – “Angel Of Broken Things” from In The Passing Light Of Day (2017)Marillion – “Murder Machines” from An Hour Before It's Dark (2022)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

It includes hours of interviews and exclusive musical performances connecting with artists around the world during the pandemic, including the complete, full-length interview session for each artist. Today HPR All Things Considered Host Dave Lawrence welcomes longtime Jethro Tull guitarist Martin Barre to our Off the Road series. Martin Barre joined Jethro Tull after their first album, in late 1968, and played on every Jethro Tull album and tour through the band’s breakup at the end of 2011. In our feature, we connect with Martin at his home in the south of the UK. He shared the details of how a solo tour of South America was impacted by the pandemic closures last year, as he and his band performed the last concerts to take place in a few of the countries they visited, with other dates blown out due to the virus. Martin also explained his recent
The bums lurking about around the Thames surely didn't know how to prog out at the level of Genesis. But indeed, they inspired Ian Anderson and Martin Barre to compose long nasty riffs. Martin talks about opening up for Hendrix, Pink Floyd, Fleetwood Mac, and Led Zeppelin… Playing with Paul McCartney and Gary Moore, and why Alvin Lee was difficult to work with… the exact guitars and amps he used in the studio and on tour… his favorite Jethro Tull song… music that influenced him and helped form his unique style, much more… His passion for playing today is just as great as it was 50 years ago!
