EPISODE 127: Francis Dunnery defies easy categorization. His work reflects a deep commitment to personal freedom and individuality. While his style is often playfully philosophical, he's also capable of crafting achingly profound, beautiful music. Dunnery first gained public recognition in the 1980s as the lead vocalist and guitarist of the progressive rock band It Bites, achieving chart success across Europe and Asia. Since then, he has embarked on a diverse musical journey spanning over three decades, collaborating with renowned artists such as Robert Plant (Led Zeppelin), Carlos Santana, Chris Difford (Squeeze), Ian Brown (The Stone Roses), Lauryn Hill, and Steve Hackett (Genesis). He has also performed with legendary bands like Yes and Hootie and the Blowfish, and shared the stage with the iconic Chris Squire. Beyond these collaborations, Dunnery is a celebrated rock icon in his own right, having released over ten albums of original and diverse compositions, achieving international chart success. He is also the founder and president of The Charlie and Kathleen Dunnery Children's Fund (CKDCF), a charity dedicated to children's health and wellness in West Cumbria, England. The CKDCF hosts an annual benefit concert and charity walk, attracting support from some of the biggest names in rock and roll history. Dunnery is more than just a musician. He's an educator, a master songwriter, a mentor, and a storyteller. As Robert Plant once observed, “Francis Dunnery should be a public service.” For over four decades, he has consistently created original and engaging entertainment for his fans, from new CDs and live concerts to astrology readings and house concerts. Today, more than ever, Dunnery remains dedicated to his own personal freedom and individuality, and encourages the same in his audience. He continues his music and philosophical studies and plans to live a long and fulfilling life.Contact us: makingsoundpodcast.comFollow on Instagram: @makingsoundpodcastFollow on Threads: @jannkloseJoin our Facebook GroupPlease support the show with a donation, thank you for listening!

In 2023 he was honored with an Academy Award and a BAFTA in the Best Score category for his work on All Quiet on the Western Front (directed by Edward Berger). His score to Garth Davis' Oscar-nominated film Lion, which he composed in collaboration with Dustin O'Halloran, was nominated for multiple awards: Oscar for Best Original Score, Golden Globe for Best Original Score, Best Score at the Critics' Choice Awards, and for Best Film Music at the BAFTAs. Bertelmann has provided music for several leading films and television series. He composed the score for Patrick Melrose, The Old Guard, Stowaway, the episode “Red Book” from Black Mirror, and Life After Life for BBC. He also composed film scores for Adrift, the 2018 romantic drama directed by Baltasa Kormákur, and, again in collaboration with O'Halloran, for Ammonite, which was short-listed for The Academy Awards in 2020. In 2022, he scored War Sailor, which was an official selection at the Toronto International Film Festival. Volker Bertelmann has just worked with Oscar-winning director Edward Berger again on the film Conclave, which was presented at the Toronto Film Festival in 2024. Bertelmann, who in his solo work goes by the name Hauschka, is a uniquely innovative pianist; he is renowned both for his trademark sound, which he achieves by preparing the piano with various small objects, and his ability to improvise entire performances. His output is prodigious: he tours extensively, and has produced over twenty albums and EPs, both solo and in collaboration with others. He has worked, among many others, with the MDR Leipzig Radio Symphony Orchestra, where he was the artist in residence, with Múm, the Icelandic experimental musical group, and with the Grammy-winning violinist Hilary Hahn. hauschka-net.deContact us: makingsoundpodcast.comFollow on Instagram: @makingsoundpodcastFollow on Threads: @jannkloseJoin our Facebook GroupPlease support the show with a donation, thank you for listening!

Annie Haslam was born on June 8th, 1947 in Bolton, Lancashire, England and is best known as the lead singer for the symphonic rock band Renaissance and for her long and diverse solo singing career. She has a five-octave vocal range. From the year 2002, Haslam has developed a parallel career as a visual artist, producing paintings on canvas, wood and various musical instruments. In 1977, Annie began her solo career with her album Annie in Wonderland, produced by Roy Wood who played most of the musical instruments, and who also recorded a duet with her on one track. Annie also performed on the Intergalactic Touring Band album with the London Symphony Orchestra and one of her solo albums with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Haslam and Wood were engaged for four years, which she later described as “four of the funniest years of my life”. She has since released eight studio albums, three of which were released through her own record label, White Dove Records. She has also collaborated with Steve Howe Of the prog rock band Yes, on a number of projects, the late John Wetton, Geoffrey Downes, Patrick Moraz, Pete Townshend, Ian Anderson, Jann Klose and many other notable musicians. anniehaslam.com
Renaissance formed in 1969 as the classical-folk-rock brainchild of two former Yardbirds, turned over its entire lineup by its third album, and spent the bulk of the 1970s churning out a brand of prog rock that brought them a devoted cult following but nothing like the commercial success of peers like Yes, Genesis, or ELP. This cult following, however, includes John, who has loved their 1973 album Ashes are Burning for over 20 years and successfully roped Amanda, Mike, and Phil into letting him wax rhapsodic about it and about the angelic vocal gifts of Annie Haslam. Join us as we cover an album and band that may borrow extensively from other prog rock bands (when they're not borrowing from classical composers of all eras) but that still carved out its own unique identity and created some of John's very favorite music.Cohosts: John McFerrin, Mike DeFabio, Phil Maddox, Amanda RodgersComplete show notes: https://discordpod.com/listen/087-renaissance-ashes-are-burning-1973Support the podcast! https://www.patreon.com/discordpod

She is the voice of the “orchestral” rock collective Renaissance which came to great prominence in the 1970s along with such progressive ensembles including Genesis, Yes, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, The Strawbs and Gentle Giant. A spirited conversationalist, Annie shares tales of her career as a fashion designer on Saville Row; studies with opera singer Sybil Knight who discovered her expansive vocal range; her work as a visual and solo recording artist, her relationships with Sandy Denny and Roy Wood of The Move / ELO / Wizzard (“the funniest four years of my life!”); how she and Eric Idle attempted to free Paul McCartney from a Japanese jail in 1980; and the new Renaissance live four-disc two CD, DVD and Blu-ray set, Ashes Are Burning – An Anthology – Live In Concert out now on Symphonic Rock Recordings. The Annie Haslam Playlist

For this episode I'm joined by Annie Haslam of the legendary symphonic progressive rock band Renaissance. The band just released its 50th anniversary live box set with the prog-length title 50th Anniversary Ashes are Burning, an Anthology - Live in Concert with the Renaissance Chamber Orchestra. Annie was kind enough to talk to me about making the live album, her long tenure in the band, her background in music, her artwork (which adorns the stage during the live performance), riding out the pandemic, and more. It was a fun interview and a must-listen for Renaissance fans. Find out more about Renaissance and order their 50th anniversary live box set here. Check out Annie's artwork here. An extremely fun and entertaining chat with Annie Haslam of Renaissance.

Bachman Turner Overdrive - My Wheels Won't Turn (1977) Brian Protheroe - Pinball (1975) He had a small role in the 1978 film Superman as a co-pilot of Air Force One. In 1984 he played in the West End musical "Pump Boys and Dinettes" on piano and vocals and percussion. Cher - Classification 1A (1971) Written by Sonny Bono. Tacky as ever. Especially the end. Dave Clark Five - Put a Little Love In Your Heart (1969) Dunn & McCashen - Alright In The City (1970) Gary Glitter - Rock And Roll Part 5 (12" extended version) (1987) Produced by Trevor Horn. Wretched. Sometimes you get the feeling I don't like you at all. O'Kaysions - Love Machine (1968) Their hit was "Girl Watcher". Creepy album cover. Nat Dove and the Devils - Theme from "Petey Wheatstraw" (1977) I saw this movie a few days ago. Pretty entertaining. Robey - One Night In Bangkok (1984) While Murray Head's "One Night In Bangkok" was just starting to climb the Billboard Hot 100, Canadian singer and actress (Louise) Robey hit the charts with her own version. It spent three weeks on the Hot 100 in March 1985, peaking at No. 77. Robey's version fared better on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart, peaking at No. 5. Remember when I talked about Kid Creole appearing on this chart repeatedly? Same thing. Roller Blade Trailer (1986) Sly & The Family Stone - Frisky (1973) The Archies - Bicycles Rollerskates & You (1969) The Checkmates - I Keep Forgetting (1970) "I Keep Forgettin'" is a song originally released by Chuck Jackson, written by Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, and Garfield. This single is often cited as one of the most innovative yet least commercial singles written and produced by Leiber-Stoller. In 1982, Michael McDonald released a song titled "I Keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near)". The song's similarity to Jackson's "I Keep Forgettin'" resulted in Leiber and Stoller being given a songwriting credit. The Klowns - Lady Love (1970) The brainchild of songwriter Jeff Barry, The Klowns were formed on the success of the Archies. The band featured actor Barry Bostwick, who portrayed Brad Majors in Rocky Horror Picture Show. Unlike the Archies, the Klowns never achieved heavy chart success with their only Billboard Hot 100 entry, "Lady Love", which peaked at #95. The Klowns - River Cruisin' (1970) The Klowns - Honey Bunny Day (1970) Bob Dylan - It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) (Live) (1965) Bob Dylan - Wigwam (1970) Bob Dylan - You're A Big Girl Now (1975) Donovan - Comin To You (1980) Donovan - A Well-Known Has-Been (1976) Donovan - Dare To Be Different (1977) Donovan - Rock and Roll Souljer (1974) Noosha Fox - More Than Molecules (1980) Noosha Fox - Odd Peculiar Strange (1980) Fox - Dejenina (1977) Nat Dove and the Devils - Theme from "Petey Wheatstraw" (1977) I programmed this song twice. Dur dur. Procol Harum - A Salty Dog (1969) Wooden Horse - Loving Man (1972) Noosha Fox's folk group before Fox was formed. Sort of like Debbie Harry or Gail Garnett in reverse. I have played Fox's song "S-s-s-single Bed" a few times on my show. I really like it. Chicago Line - Shimmy Shimmy Ko Ko Bop (1966) Bass player Louis Cennamo played on James Taylor's first album as well as being a member of the original version of the band Renaissance (pre-Annie Haslam). Kill me for knowing that. Terry Knight - Saint Paul (1969) The Fortunes - Seasons In The Sun (1968) An English harmony beat group. Formed in 1963 in Birmingham, they first came to prominence and international acclaim in 1965, when "You've Got Your Troubles" broke into the US and UK Top 10s. So Terry Jacks' version was a cover of a cover, basically. The original, written by Jacques Brel, was translated (more or less) into English by Rod McKuen in 1964. His lyrics were a little more...adult... Adieu, Francoise, my trusted wife, Without you, I'd have had a lonely life, You cheated lots of times, but then, I forgave you in the end, Though your lover was my friend, With your lovers everywhere, Just be careful, I'll be there... The Rollers - No Doubt About It (1981) Who does this sound like to you? I hear Toto. The Bay City Rollers, long removed (in '70s rock years) from fame, kept going for a while and released three records under the name The Rollers. They are not as bad as you might think. Sort of a Corporate Rock sound. No heart or soul, but no embarrassing shit, either, and YES, I have heard all three. The Klowns - Yellow Sunglasses (1970)

Welcome to Beacon Road Show with Rich Levesque Today's guest is the amazing singer-songwriter Eliza Rush! This conversation brings a number of amazing lessons Eliza shares from her own experience of taking leaps of faith that took her along the way, often with unexpected surprises along the way! Oh, and we also recount our experiences learning to surf in Venice Beach, California a couple years back. Eliza also performs 3 of her original songs for us: “Daughter of the Sun”, performed solo, approximately 10 minutes in “Come This Far”, followed by “You Are Worthy”, both accompanied by percussionist Mike Wojik. These songs begin approximately one hour and 10 minutes into the show. This is a little longer than my shows usually go but it’s worth the time because it connects inspiring lessons, entertaining stories, and amazing music all rolled into one. I may be biased but it’ll make that long trek to the beach just a little more amazing. --------------- From her website: Classically trained and steeped in the rich musical culture of Canada, Eliza Rush is no stranger to performing but is a relative newcomer to the acoustic scene in the Lehigh Valley. Pulling from all styles of music, she is a finder and interpreter of songs that beg to be shared. Her hauntingly beautiful and evocative voice paints landscapes in song. Reminiscent of Annie Haslam, Eliza takes a pop song or an old standard and makes it all her own. A blossoming songwriter, she will sprinkle in her originals while adeptly performing as an acoustic band, duo or solo artist. When you see her perform, her voice and presence will pull you in. Potter’s Daughter will be releasing their new single “Blood and Water” featuring legendary Renaissance vocalist Annie Haslam on August 8, 2019! The single will be available digitally, CD single and limited edition 7-inch vinyl! Potter’s Daughter was formed in New York City while Dyanne Potter Voegtlin was studying classical piano performance at the Manhattan School of Music. A pupil of Robert Goldsand and Mike Longo, Dyanne searched for the marriage of classical theory and virtuosity with the freedom and innovation of jazz both in study and performance. Together with a rotating group of masters from many schools of music, Dyanne performed regularly in New York City, as well as in north-eastern Pennsylvania. Now, joining forces with long-time friend, Amit Chatterjee, (producer, arranger, and guitarist), and Ian C. Voegtlin (composer, guitarist, and saxophonist), they are looking forward to releasing their first single, “Blood and Water,” featuring guest artist Annie Haslam. This single marks the beginning of the band’s evolution from the acoustic and eclectic sound of their debut album, “The Blind Side.” Embracing more elements of fusion and progressive rock, Potter’s Daughter’s “New Prog” philosophy creates a listening experience of complex melodic composition, emotional vocal leads and harmonies, and searing solos.
Louie is joined by special guest, composer and lyricist Eli Bolin (Documentary Now’s Co-Op, Found! The Musical, Sesame Street, Story Pirates) to talk about one of their favorite albums and guys, Harry Nilsson and his 1971 masterpiece, Nilsson Schmilsson! Also, Louie brings in some X-Ray Spex and Eli shares his love for Annie Haslam!

Jann Klose is elated to have his brand-new studio album “In Tandem” released worldwide. Fans can download and stream the album, which features a selection of top South African artists such as Karen Zoid and Tamara Dey, on their favorite digital platform. “In Tandem” also features a duet between Jann and legendary Renaissance vocalist Annie Haslam on a cover version of Peter Gabriel's “Don't Give Up,” which has also been released as a single. The wait is finally over after almost a year's worth of work going into the writing and recording of the album, and Jann is ready for people to hear all the songs on “In Tandem”! “I am so excited to release 'In Tandem' to the world! Making this album has been the most beautiful creative experience of my life and career thus far. Working with all these great guest artists from three continents has opened my mind in ways I never expected. I think this is my most honest work to date and I hope everyone enjoys listening to it as much as we did making it.”

Finds Time To Talk About Their New Album And Tour
Renaissance formed out of the same Yardbirds’ ashes that sent Jimmy Page to form Led Zeppelin. After several lineup changes, the band developed a reputation as one of the finest progressive rock bands of the Seventies. After breaking up in the Eighties, the band reformed back in 2009 with a new lineup – still fronted by vocalist Annie Haslam and guitarist Michael Dunford. They’ve just released a two CD/1 DVD collection called Renaissance Tour 2011 – Live in Concert, where the band performed two of their classic albums in their entirety – Turn of the Cards, and Scheherazade and Other Stories.Haslam tells us a great story of how the band got a flat tire in the pouring rain, while driving to where they were filming the DVD. She also reveals details on a brand-new Renaissance studio album coming in 2013, funded in part by a successful Kickstarter campaign.
