Pastor, author and trip leader Brian Haynes joins our podcast today. He and Rich describe the different types of deserts found in Israel and how they are biblical metaphors for life. Brian shares a personal story of when his family walked through a "YESHIMON" desert. In times like this, only the presence of God and a miracle of God will sustain life. These experiences led Brian to author War in the Wilderness: Fight for Your Family When Life Isn't as It Should Be, a resource for families to point them to God and to give them Hope as they walk through trying times.Brian shares these points for families walking through wilderness experiences:The Enemy is the Father of Lies and wants to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10)Avoid isolationLean into God instead of away from HimListen and obey GodDon't go it alone (doctors, counselors, praying friends)Take small steps in the right directionStay determinedRemember, God is in the business of bringing SHALOM to CHAOS, restoring things, bringing life and healing to places that are dead and broken. The Psalms use many desert pictures to remind us of WHO GOD IS. "Sing to God, sing praises to his name; lift up a song to him who rides through the deserts; his name is the LORD; exult before him!" What is spiritual warfare and how does it affect our homes, families, marriages, relationships, and churches? The Empowered Homes team welcomes our dear friend, Brian Haynes, along with our favorite senior pastor, Ryan Rush, to discuss Brian's latest book, War in the Wilderness: Fight for Your Family When Life Isn't as It Should Be. Brian is incredibly vulnerable and raw in sharing the story of what God has done in his own family and how it was the catalyst for his book. **Listen with care warning - this episode does discuss sexual assault.** About The Book: War in the Wilderness We live between two gardens: Eden and the New Jerusalem. Between the gardens there is only desert; a biblical metaphor for life. Three main words in the Hebrew language describe the desert: midbar, t'siyah, and yashiymown―three kinds of deserts and metaphorically three kinds of life experience. In midbar you can survive if you know what you are doing. Midbar is what we call, normal. It's not exactly right, but it's as good as it gets outside the Garden. In t'siyah you can survive if you have help. This is deeper, darker, hotter, and even more chaotic. There are times in life when the soul of your family is scorched. In the t'siyah parts of life, you can't survive unless you have help. Yashiymown is desert you cannot survive. Yashiymown is wild, unbearable, and unfit for dwelling. In this time of life, only the presence of God and a miracle of God will sustain life. Life between the gardens is a desert. It's all challenging but some parts are almost impossible. The most important action we can take to lead our families through such a war in the wilderness is to cry out to God. He will hear you. This month on the M2P podcast, we have a great conversation that we recorded live at the D6 Conference in Orlando, with our friend Brian Haynes. Brian is a pastor, teacher, and author whose passion is to restore people, families, and churches. Brian has decades of experience in ministry leadership and, as a father, has a compelling story to tell. His latest book War in the Wilderness, is an incredibly helpful resource for both parents and ministry leaders. That's why we wanted to pull Brian off the D6 main stage and get him on the M2P mic to discuss how we can lead through difficult times and issues with our children, teens, and within our homes.
