I really appreciate it. 00:00:27 Today is Monday, July 13, 2026. I am somewhere on the road, on the way, we’re driving today to Winnemucca, Nevada. We left San Francisco this morning, rented a Penske truck. 00:00:48 I picked up the Penske truck at 9 o’clock a.m. I told you in the last episode it cost me $3,600. 00:00:56 That’s actually not true. It actually cost me five big ones, because your credit card company and your auto insurance doesn’t cover truck rental. We are in a 16-foot Penske truck driving it across the country, all the way from San Francisco to an undisclosed location in New York, upstate New York. 00:01:23 We’re expecting it to take us 46 hours. It’s going to go over eight days, that’s the plan. We flew into San Francisco on Thursday, stayed at a hotel at JFK on Wednesday night, the TWA Hotel. 00:01:40 Compliments of the undisclosed person traveling with me. Thank you very much. Beautiful undisclosed person. 00:01:48 Had a good time. We drank a lot. Let’s put it that way. 00:01:53 We had a fun time. TWA Hotel is an interesting hotel. It’s set up like the old TWA Airlines. 00:02:04 They even have a cocktail lounge in an airplane. It’s quite interesting. Pretty expensive, but it was fun. I wouldn’t have been able to afford it, but the undisclosed person put in the bill, and 00:02:16 I very much appreciate it, I’ve got to tell you. So then we flew into San Francisco on Friday. We met up with Craig and his wife, Pam, and their friend Dianne. 00:02:34 Is it Dianne or Diana, or something like that? Super nice woman. We went to Oakland, met with them for drinks and dinner, and we stayed in an Airbnb in Oakland, which was left a little bit to be desired, the Airbnb, but it had a shower, let’s put it that way. Then we drove all the way to Ukiah, met up with Casey, Casey Crenshaw, and the girls 00:02:59 in Featherwitch. It was Erica’s husband’s birthday, and they were having a cake party, so we stopped, a cake, not a keg, a cake party. We stopped in there for some cake, and it was nice to see the Featherwitch girls, haven’t seen them in a long time. And of course, there was talk about getting the band back together and all that, and I’m 00:03:15 holding my breath for that one, girls. Then we drove to Ukiah and stayed at a hotel in Ukiah, and then on Saturday, I had a Chad gig up in Fortuna, which is near Eureka. We opened up for a band called Shenandoah. 00:03:33 That was a fun show, a lot of people there, a good crowd, and they liked us. As usual, people thought that I was not a country guy, more of a rock and roll guy, but they seemed to like it, at least the kids that were shouting my name, holding up the metal horns, liked me. There was a cute little punk rock couple dressed as cowboys, and they were line dancing while we were playing. 00:03:55 It was fun. So then after that, the next morning, Sunday morning, we got up and drove all the way to the Mountain House and picked up the rest of my shift from the Mountain House, and then drove all the way to San Francisco and stayed at Don’s Basement on Sunday night. There was nobody else there because the kids are being withheld, the grandkids are being withheld from Michael Butler, from Papa, because Papa’s an asshole, apparently. 00:04:24 I don’t know. I’m not going to get into that, but yeah, we stayed there, went to the Pinsky Truck Company this morning, drove it back to the house in San Francisco, loaded that Pinsky Truck up with all my guitars, all my amps. Did I tell you how much the Pinsky Truck cost? 00:04:42 Well, see, the insurance, your insurance doesn’t cover it. It doesn’t cover the lost damage waiver. Your credit cards don’t cover it. 00:04:50 You have to buy the lost damage waiver. They’re walking around showing every scratch. So I had to get the lost damage waiver, which costs $1,000, actually $900 and change. 00:05:01 So this truck ended up costing me close to $5,000. Did I mention that I need some donations? We put into the AI route us to some places with some good dive bars. This place is telling us to go to Winnemucca. 00:05:53 Hold on, I’ll take you to some of this water. I can’t wait to have a beer. The undisclosed, beautiful undisclosed person is driving the Pinsky truck right now. 00:06:07 I drove the whole way, but I needed to get a podcast in. She’s going to take us into Reno. Stopping at Winnemucca. 00:06:14 The chat GPT said there’s a couple of great bars in Winnemucca. Walking distance from the hotel. Or it’s actually a motel. 00:06:24 So we’re pulling into the motel. We’re going to park the Pinsky truck and walk to one of the two dive bars it suggested. Billy the Kid’s Hole in the Wall. 00:06:34 No, is it? Butch Cassidy’s Hole in the Wall. And there was another one. 00:06:37 I forget what it’s called. So we’re going to do that tonight. And then we’re going to get up in the morning and drive somewhere on the route to Catskills of New York. 00:06:48 So if you’re along that route, please hit me up friends. As much as we'd like to, none of us can see the future. But that hasn't stopped us from trying. Financial advisors attempt to forecast markets, meteorologists predict the weather, and sports fans try to call the final score.But when it comes to our finances—and our faith—there's an important distinction between wise planning and prideful presumption. So how do we tell the difference?The late civil rights leader Ralph Abernathy once said, “I don't know what the future may hold, but I know Who holds the future.” That's a comforting truth. God is sovereign—and that brings peace. But His sovereignty doesn't remove our responsibility to act wisely.Biblical Planning Is a Form of StewardshipScripture doesn't discourage planning—it commands it. In fact, wise planning is an essential part of faithful stewardship. God has entrusted us with time, money, relationships, and opportunities. Even though we can't predict tomorrow, we're still called to be faithful with today.Proverbs 6 paints a vivid picture of this wisdom:“Go to the ant… consider its ways and be wise! It has no commander, no overseer or ruler, yet it stores its provisions in summer and gathers its food at harvest.”The ant doesn't know what's ahead, but it prepares. Likewise, Jesus tells us in Matthew 25 to live in a state of readiness. “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.” Though He's referring to His return, the principle holds: life is short, time is precious, and we are not in control.When Planning Becomes PresumptionPlanning becomes presumption when we assume control over outcomes that belong to God alone.To presume means “to assume something before you know the facts.” Biblically, presumption is often associated with pride—living as if we control the future and no longer need God's input. This attitude is precisely what Jesus warns against in the Parable of the Rich Fool (Luke 12).After a man harvests a bumper crop, he says to himself:“I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones…You have plenty of grain laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry.”But God replies: “You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you.”The man's mistake wasn't in planning or saving—it was planning without God. He assumed he had time, control, and security apart from his Creator.James 4 echoes this same warning:“Now listen, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city...' Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.”The Antidote: Humble, God-Dependent PlanningJames doesn't say “don't make plans.” Instead, he offers this wise alternative:“Instead, you ought to say, ‘If it is the Lord's will, we will live and do this or that.'”This kind of planning begins with God and continues with Him. It's rooted in trust, not control. We may set goals, but we do so with open hands, inviting God to direct our steps (Proverbs 16:9).This happens in the context of a relationship. As we grow in intimacy with the Lord—through prayer, Scripture, community, and obedience—our plans begin to reflect His heart and mission.If you're married, begin planning through prayer with your spouse. If you have kids, model this dependence on God in your family conversations. Let them see you trusting God not just for salvation, but also for your finances, schedule, and future.Wise counsel is key. Don't plan in isolation. Talk to a pastor, mentor, or a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) who can help you apply biblical wisdom to your financial decisions.So yes, make plans. Just don't leave God out of them. Hold your goals loosely. And remember: success isn't defined by your ability to predict or control the future—it's defined by your willingness to seek and trust the One who holds it.Want to explore this topic further? The latest exhibit at the Tennessee State Museum, “Eight Days in Dayton: 100 Years of the Scopes Trial,” will be on display June 24–October 12, 2025. It offers a rich, immersive journey through the State of Tennessee v. John T. Scopes, one of the most iconic legal and cultural events in American history. In this episode, the museum's chief curator, Richard White, and K-12 education manager, Christopher Grisham, share details about the trial, discuss what makes this such a pivotal moment in Tennessee history, and take listeners behind the scenes of the planning and implementation of the exhibit and the educational tools that accompany it. The exhibit centers on the 1925 Scopes Trial in Dayton, Tennessee, where John T. Scopes, a Dayton high school teacher, was prosecuted under Tennessee's Butler Act for teaching human evolution—a law that prohibited denying biblical creation in public schools. Framed as a challenge to the constitutionality of the law, the trial was staged to ignite both legal and social debate over science versus religion. At the time, it was considered the trial of the century. The exhibit brings the courtroom battles to life and features photographs, tintypes, daguerreotypes, and enlarged press images of Scopes, Darrow, Bryan, and the Dayton community. Visitors will also find authentic courtroom furnishings from the trial, alongside the original microphone used for live radio transmission, the biology textbook Scopes used to teach evolution at Rhea County High School and the table and chairs from Robinson's Drugstore where local civic and business leaders met in May 1925 to hatch the idea of challenging the Butler Act in court. Liz and Ben delve deep into the archives and come back with some highlights from the collected Discworld Diaries from Terry Pratchett and Stephen Briggs' The Ankh-Morpork Archives Volumes I (2019) and II (2020), plus Terry's 2004 collaboration with Bernard Pearson, The Discworld Alamak. Between 1998 and 2003, Discworld fans got an extra little treat: an in-universe diary themed around one of the Guilds or other major institutions of the Disc, full of new Discworld history and gags penned by Pratchett with the assistance of Stephen Briggs, and illustrations by Paul Kidby. In 2004, they got something a little different: a Roundworld version of the Celebrated Discworld Almanak, a publication famed for its wisdom, length and absorbency, co-authored by Pratchett and Bernard Pearson. After a brief break, two more diaries with new gags and Discworld lore appeared in 2007 and 2008, but any subsequent diaries or journals were just compilations of quotes and existing material. Like all diaries, these were smaller print runs and never reprinted, so for most fans these extra tidbits were lost to time. But then, in 2019 and 2020, Stephen Briggs and Paul Kidby brought all that weirdness back in two new books: The Ankh-Morpork Archives Volume I, and Volume II, each collecting the original content from four of those diaries and presenting them in a coffee-table style larger format, with new layout, updated or new art, and all the charm of the originals.
