Send us a textOn the latest episode of the Empowered Homes Podcast, Bobby, Joe, and Meg discuss the challenges of Parenting Athletes. Raising an athlete requires intentionality and a great deal of patience! As parents, our role is not to act as the coach (unless we're actually coaching our child's team), but to support and guide them toward fulfilling their higher, God-given purpose. Regardless of our own athletic background, we, as parents, need to be mindful of any unhealthy emotional attachments to our child's performance, which can make it harder to focus on the bigger picture. It's easy to lose sight of the Gospel and forget that life lessons should take precedence over wins, points, or breaking records. It's important to embrace the opportunity to nurture growth through these experiences. Download the Parenting Your Athlete PlaybookAbout Empowered Homes Who we are? Send us a textMeg and Bobby are joined by Tammy Dorsett, co-founder of The Gap at Sawmill Meadow. Tammy discusses how her family supported her son's transition away from college and his path to relaunching into the world with purpose and responsibility. This experience inspired the creation of The Gap at Sawmill Meadow, a faith-based program designed to help emerging adults who aren't yet ready for college or the workforce make the most of a purposeful "Gap Year" to prepare for the future. They are doing the beautiful work in helping new adult practice how to be before they decide what to do. About The Gap at Sawmill MeadowConnect on InstagramConnect on Facebook Resources For ParentsBarna Impact 360 ReportAbout Tammy Tammy Dorsett co-founded The Gap at Sawmill Meadow with her husband of 29 years, Matt Dorsett. Through Matt and Tammy's personal story with their oldest child, they realized that the “normalized” path after high school is often not the best path for all new adults. After a long career as a physical therapist in many different settings, she felt called to move into the nonprofit space to start a faith-based, structured, Gap Year option that is financially accessible to all new adults who are bold enough to consider a different path. Tammy and Matt have three children who are new adults. Tammy has served at her church in various capacities over the past 27 years, most recently co-leading a community group of newly married adults. What is spiritual warfare and how does it affect our homes, families, marriages, relationships, and churches? The Empowered Homes team welcomes our dear friend, Brian Haynes, along with our favorite senior pastor, Ryan Rush, to discuss Brian's latest book, War in the Wilderness: Fight for Your Family When Life Isn't as It Should Be. Brian is incredibly vulnerable and raw in sharing the story of what God has done in his own family and how it was the catalyst for his book. **Listen with care warning - this episode does discuss sexual assault.** About The Book: War in the Wilderness We live between two gardens: Eden and the New Jerusalem. Between the gardens there is only desert; a biblical metaphor for life. Three main words in the Hebrew language describe the desert: midbar, t'siyah, and yashiymown―three kinds of deserts and metaphorically three kinds of life experience. In midbar you can survive if you know what you are doing. Midbar is what we call, normal. It's not exactly right, but it's as good as it gets outside the Garden. In t'siyah you can survive if you have help. This is deeper, darker, hotter, and even more chaotic. There are times in life when the soul of your family is scorched. In the t'siyah parts of life, you can't survive unless you have help. Yashiymown is desert you cannot survive. Yashiymown is wild, unbearable, and unfit for dwelling. In this time of life, only the presence of God and a miracle of God will sustain life. Life between the gardens is a desert. It's all challenging but some parts are almost impossible. The most important action we can take to lead our families through such a war in the wilderness is to cry out to God. He will hear you.
