Claire McElroy and Wes Weddell tell us about a new addition to the Whatcom READS author visit: MUSIC inspired by the book, performed by local musicians and organized by the Bushwick Book Club of Seattle!
Founder of Bushwick Book Club Susan Hwang discusses her projects with hosts Vijay R. Nathan and Scottt Raven
Our show for Epiphany Literary Journal's EMPIRE Issue was Bushwick Book Club's first collaboration with a periodical. Each songwriter selected a different work from the issue to respond to –– poetry, short stories, visual art and essays. In addition to the live recordings of the songs from the show, we have an introduction from Epiphany guest editor, Sameer Panya and readings from Epiphany writers Celia Bland, Ilya Lebovich and Leah Umansky. You'll hear songs written and performed by Charlie Nieland, Beth Bliss, Susan Hwang, Teresa Toro, Patricia Santos, Lianne Smith, John S. Hall and Ray Brown, plus Sung Uni Lee's soundscape performance. You'll also hear Intros from contributing Epiphany writers sharing their most recent earworms and intros from BBC songwriters sharing their latest reads. We hope you enjoy this convergence of writers, musicians, artistic disciplines and creative communities.
Charlie Nieland is a New York City-based record producer, indie music veteran, song writer and composer. Renowned for tastefully blending post punk, dream pop and progressive rock with sweeping melodies and restless and visceral rhythms, Charlie Nieland has been writing, playing and producing music for decades, with a focus on the atmospheric and the imaginative as one of the founding members of "Her Vanished Grace." Nieland has written and produced material with such notable artists as Blondie, Debbie Harry, Rufus Wainwright, Dead Leaf Echo and The Scissor Sisters, just to name a few. He scored the feature film "The Safety of Objects" featuring Glenn Close, the pilot episode of "The L Word" on Showtime and the VH-1 documentary "NY77: The Coolest Year in Hell." Charlie was awarded a Gold Record in the UK for his production work on Blondie's "Greatest Hits Sight & Sound" and achieved a Top 10 Billboard Dance Chart Position with Debbie Harry's single "Two Times Blue," which he co-wrote and co-produced.As a solo artist, he has 4 new singles out called "So Few Have So Much," "Pawns" "Divisions" and "Tightrope, which features a video directed by B.A. Miale, starring international cabaret and circus performer Amy Gordon. Susan Hwang plays the Janggu or Korean drums and sings. Hwang is also the founder of the Bushwick Book Club created in 2009 and Nieland is technical director . "Tightrope" was written and inspired by the novel, "Little Liar," a novel by Julia Gray. Nieland and Hwang formed a literature-inspired musical group called Lusterlit. "Divisions" is the full LP that is scheduled to be released in March 2021 and will be available on Bandcamp. It can be pre-ordered directly on Bandcamp. https://charlienieland.bandcamp.com/album/divisionshttp://www.charlienieland.com

The first Quarantine edition of Bushwick Book Club featured 16 musicians, filmmakers, dancers and one chef who came together with author, Tanya Marquardt, to present new songs, dance, film and a fermented food offering in response to Marquardt's STRAY: Memoir of a Runaway. Performances were live-streamed not only from Brooklyn, but BBC Chapters in New Orleans and London. Excerpts from the live-stream show alternate with clips from songwriters and artists on their experience of this new format and other observations of life and art in Quarantine. If you listen to the end, you get to participate in the concluding ritual lead by the author, Tanya Marquardt, making this not only a podcast, but a tool for excising ancient karmic Quarantine sludge. Enjoy! Performers featured: Susan Hwang (host, Lusterlit, co-producer), Charlie Nieland (Lusterlit, co-producer), Sung Uni Lee, Ellia Bisker, Ray Brown, Teresa Toro, John S. Hall, Troy Ogilvie (w/Sean Gannet and Omar Zubair), Olivier Conan, Michael Lentz, Henry Tenney w/ Lulu, Tanya Marquardt, Stephanie Larriere, Scott MX Turner. Amanda Thorpe, Gary Burton, Swan Drsti with Spencer Bladyka. Lisa Barnstone's film is absent from the podcast, but please view it in the video of the whole show saved to our Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/BushwickBookClub/). Tanya's performance of "Just Relax" was used with permission from Theatre Conspiracy Stray. (https://conspiracy.ca/stray)

They talk magic, politics and art with special attention to the witch archetype and how it's even more meaningful to personal power and global change now than ever.

Maybe it was when she began "Slapping the Salami," or when she sheepishly admitted the "salami" was actually Kielbasa. Or maybe it was when (Sung) Uni Lee asked for volunteers (for a Bangers and Mash-eating contest) and talked about the importance of breaking the boundaries between performer and audience when I knew I had to go up and talk to her. In this episode, taped just after The Bushwick Book Club's medley of performances around the book "White Teeth" by Zadie Smith at Barbes, Uni and I chat about the power of engaging audiences in new ways, and lots of other cool stuff. Introducing myself to inspiring artists is one of my favorite things about talking to strangers!

From BCB..."http://bestofbcb.org/wu-091-bainbridge-public-library-events-in-december/ December at the Bainbridge Island Library begins with the First Friday Artwalk, Friday December 5th, featuring Dorothy Matthews' exquisite watercolors of Nutcracker images. But that's only the beginning! On Saturday, December 6, from 11 am to noon, talented Bushwick Book Club musicians will perform original music inspired by Dickens' Christmas Carol. The Island Film Group will bring Jimmy Stewart's classic comedy, The Shop around the Corner, to the library at 7 pm on December 10th, and the Ferry Tales meeting on the 4:40 boat from Seattle December 11th will discuss Warmth of Other Suns, by Isabel Wilkerson. Be sure to join them as they discuss this beautifully written chronicle of one of the great untold stories of American history: the decades-long migration of black citizens who fled the south for northern and western cities, in search of a better life. The Waterfront Book Group will meet Tuesday, December 16, at the Waterfront Park Community Center to discuss Lois Lowry's The Giver. For a special pre-Christmas treat: on Tuesday December 23rd you can schedule a free half-hour appointment with human resources consultant and leadership coach Josy Koumans to review your resume, improve your interview techniques, or discuss your future career plans. All this and more -- including storytimes for babies, toddlers and preschoolers and the ever-popular Book-a-Computer-Trainer -- available for you this month at the Bainbridge Island Library: don't miss it! And a special note: the Library will be closed December 24th and 25th, and will close at 5 December 31st. Happy Holidays from your Bainbridge Island Library!
