Happy Christmas Eve, everybody! Can you believe tomorrow's the big day and that Santa's already set out on his annual trip!? To celebrate the occasion, please enjoy our annual Christmas Eve story, in which the elves read Ivan Cohen's "Batman Returns: One Dark Christmas Eve", the children's adaptation of the Tim Burton holiday classic, "Batman Returns", illustrated by J.J. Harrison! While this storybook is written to be read to the tune of "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", have no fear - the elves have no intention of making your ears bleed today and thus don't sing the tale as it's meant to be delivered!  So take a break from the wrapping, settle back with your favorite holiday drink beside your Christmas tree in order to bask in its glow, and enjoy!  As always, thanks for your love and support, y'all! Make sure to check your feeds tomorrow - Monday, December 25th, Christmas Day itself - for our episode on season two of the legacy sequel series, "The Santa Clauses"!  Have a very Merry Christmas! We hope you have an amazing one, filled with food, drinks, laughter, and loved ones, and we hope that the big man in red brings you everything you asked for! What the Riff!?! delves once again into the great (and not so great) Christmas songs to add a little cheer as you rock around the Christmas tree this year.“Carol of the Bells” by Mannheim SteamrollerMannheim Steamroller covers a Ukrainian carol from 1922.  They highlight a 3 against 2 polyrhythm that is present in the original song, and add a major key change that is not present in the original.  This is off their second Christmas album released in 1988 entitled "A Fresh Aire Christmas."  “O Come O Come Emanuel” by Bad ReligionThis fast-paced rendition takes an 8th century song and puts a punk twist to it.  It is a quick song, like most bad Religion tracks. “Yellin' at the Xmas Tree” by Billy IdolRocker Billy Idol reminisces about times with his drunk father yelling at the Christmas tree.  "Oh the Christmas bells are ringing and the carolers are singing, but Daddy, he don't hear 'em, he's yellin' at the Christmas tree."“Space Christmas” by  Shonen KnifeThis Japanese punk-pop band was inspired by the girl groups of the 60's and the Ramones.  This sci-fi Christmas track has a "bubblegum pop" sound with a punk edge.  “Taking Care of Christmas” by Bachman Turner OverdriveWhen Rob covered "Bachman Turner Overdrive II" earlier this year we discovered this Christmas remake of their classic single.  It is surprisingly catchy for a song overhauled for Christmas.  Randy Bachman did an all-Christmas album in 2008 including this song.“Christmas All Over Again” by Tom Petty and the HeartbreakersThis original song was penned by Tom Petty on a ukulele in 1992.  It was used in the motion picture "Home Alone 2:  Lost in New York," and also appeared in "Jingle All the Way."  Jeff Lynne co-produced the song, played bells, bass, timpani, sang background vocals, and wishes for a Chuck Berry Songbook in the song.“God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” by the REO SpeedwagonREO Speedwagon keeps the original feel of the carol in their rendition of this classic.  It was released on their 2009 album, "Not So Silent Night...Christmas with REO Speedwagon."  The original English carol dates back to the 1650's.  “Santa Claus” by The SonicsThis song with a fuzzy guitar appeared on the debut album from The Sonics back in 1965.  The Sonics were a garage band out of Tacoma, Washington in the 60's, and influenced the punk and grunge movement.  They are likely best known for their party song, "Louie, Louie."“Santa's Messin' with the Kid” by Eddie C. CampbellBlues guitarist and singer Eddie C. Campbell was well known in the Chicago blues scene and learned guitar from Muddy Waters.  This song was released on his 1977 Christmas album.“What Christmas Means to Me”  by Stevie WonderThis original song was released on Tamla records in 1967 on Wonder's eighth studio album entitled "Someday at Christmas."  It was the final track on the album which consisted of a mix of Christmas standards and original music. “Merry Christmas Darling” by the CarpentersNo Christmas playlist would be complete without Karen Carpenter's voice.  This song was originally recorded by The Carpenters in 1970.  The lyrics date back to 1946 when songwriter Frank Pooler wrote it about a love interest at the time.  He had The Carpenters perform it when they were his music students at California State University, Long Beach.“White Christmas” by Bing CrosbyBing Crosby originally performed this song composed by Irving Berlin in 1940.  It was performed for the first time in December 1941, and appeared in the motion picture "Holiday Inn" in 1942.  (and there might be a bonus song...)We at What the Riff?!? wish every one a blessed and Merry Christmas!

Unknown artist, “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” from Electronic Computer Christmas Music (1990 Silver Bells Music). As the name suggests, this was a label dedication mostly to producing broadcast music for the holidays. They also release several albums of nature sounds. The studio musicians go unnamed. John Baker, “Christmas Commercial” from BBC Radiophonic Music (1968 BBC Radio Enterprises). A short piece used for broadcasting that was created by tape manipulation of the sounds of a mechanical cash register. It was part of collection of short works by BBC Radiophonic composers. “This record has been produced with the intention of entertaining rather than informing: the items chosen do not necessarily represent a survey of the music created at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop. The Workshop at the BBC Music Studios in Maida Vale, London, is equipped with tape recording machines and other electronic equipment for generating and manipulating sound. The composition and realization of this music and sound is done by a small number of specialized creative staff.” Christmas Baubles, “Orch” from Christmas Baubles And Their Strange Sounds (2002 Lo Recordings). Christmas Baubles was a Russian trio comprised of Alexander Zaitsev, Gennady Pleshkov, and Ilya Baramiya, who produced and performed this track. Cabaret Voltaire, “Invocation” from Eight Crepuscule Tracks (1987 Interior Music). This track was originally included on the holiday album Chantons Noël - Ghosts Of Christmas Past (1981 Les Disques Du Crépuscule), which suggested to me that it should be in this holiday podcast. Any excuse for a CV track. Paul Haig, “Scottish Christmas” from Chantons Noël - Ghosts Of Christmas Past (1981 Les Disques Du Crépuscule). From a compilation album of Christmas-related tunes. Scottish songwriter, musician and singer. Les Cousins Dangereux, “What Child Is This” from Gotta Groove Records 2012 (2012 Gotta Groove Records). Holiday album with various artists. It's Friday, December 23rd, A.D. 2022. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. By Adam McManus (Adam@TheWorldview.com) Radical Hindus severely injured Christians in India w/ bamboo sticks Christians in 20 villages in the Narayanpur and Kondagaon districts in the Chhattisgarh state of India were attacked this week by radical Hindu nationalists for refusing to re-convert from Christianity back to Hinduism, reports International Christian Concern. Hindu nationalists used bamboo sticks to attack Christians on Sunday, December 18, as Christians gathered for worship. Tragically, several people were severely injured and hospitalized, while others fled to the jungle or to nearby police stations. The attackers looted and destroyed the homes of many Christians and desecrated three churches. One witness said, “Small kids and women with their families were sitting in open places in biting cold, with no food or water, warming their hands with their breath.” India is the 10th worst country in the world for the persecution of Christians. Matthew 5:10 says, “Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.” Church changes Christmas carol lyrics to recognize “queer” All Saints with Holy Trinity Church in Loughborough, Britain decided to take Jesus and the Nativity out of Christmas. Instead, the Bible-rejecting church promoted a message for the "queer and questioning," reports Summit News. Rachael Brind-Surch, the trainee priest, boasted of their outrageous alterations to the traditional "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" carol. Listen to the disturbing lyrics in the first verse of the altered hymn.  "God rest you, queer and questioning, your anxious hearts be still, Believe that you are deeply known and part of God's good will. For all to live as one in peace the global dream fulfilled. O tidings of comfort and joy." Another revision from the misguided British church said, "God rest you also, women, who by men have been erased, Through history ignored and scorned, defiled and displaced; Remember that your stories too, are held within God's grace." The verses replaced the actual lyrics of the carol, which talk about the nativity and how Christ came to “save us all from Satan's power.” John 12:31 says, “Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out.” 31 GOP Reps vow to block bills by GOP Senators who vote for Biden's $1.7 trillion spending bill Thirty-one House Republicans signed onto a letter Wednesday, vowing to block legislation from any GOP senator who dares to vote for Biden's massive $1.7 trillion omnibus spending package during the lame duck session, reports Breitbart. On Tuesday, 13 House Republicans signed a letter  promising to block the legislative priorities of any Republican senator who votes for the omnibus deal with Democrats just days before Congress leaves town for Christmas. They wrote, “This 4,155-page bill spends $1.7 trillion to further empower the Biden administration's tyrannical attack on the liberty and security of our constituents, and it must be opposed with any fiber of political fortitude Senate Republicans still have. “It will add to our $31 trillion national debt, digging a deeper hole for our children and grandchildren to crawl out of. “As such, we reiterate that if any omnibus [bill] passes in the remaining days of this Congress, we will oppose and whip opposition to any legislative priority of those senators who vote for its passage – including the Republican leader. We will oppose any rule, any consent request, suspension voice vote, or roll call vote of any such Senate bill, and will otherwise do everything in our power to thwart even the smallest legislative and policy efforts of those senators.” Turning Point USA vs. the RNC's Ronna Romney McDaniel After three losing cycles, the grassroots want change at the Republican National Committee according to a new Turning Point Action poll. 78.4% DISAPPROVE of Ronna Romney McDaniel's job as Chair of the RNC, 84% want RNC members to listen to the grassroots, and Ronna has only 1.7% support.  McDaniel is the niece of Republican in Name Only Senator Mitt Romney of Utah. Turning Point is supporting attorney Harmeet Dhillon who announced her candidacy on December 5th with the proclamation, “Republicans are tired of losing.”  Dhillon won in a landslide in the Turning Point Action Poll. Appearing on Brian Kilmead's radio show, Ronna Romney McDaniel was upset, and attacked the largest conservative student organization in the country. ROMNEY McDANIEL: “I'm going to say something about Turning Point. They do great conferences. How many young voters did they register? How many youth voters turned out this cycle? How about the college kids in Arizona where they're headquartered? If you're going to hold the RNC accountable, start looking at these outside organizations and ask them what they did. And this is a group that's taken over the youth vote, they've taken over college campuses and they need to be held accountable. But this is Turning Point and Harmeet trying to take over the RNC.” In a series of five tweets, Charlie Kirk, founder of Turning Point USA, responded to McDaniel by saying, “Turning Point logged more than 500,000 volunteer hours this election cycle. Turning Point Action directly contacted and engaged over 5 million voters. We hosted well over 100 major door-knocking events and rallies in target states and districts, recruited over 2,000 new precinct leaders, and registered tens of thousands of new voters. Instead of attacking the only youth organization in the country actually doing something, maybe you should be thankful we are doing the work.” Kari Lake legal team finds 42.5% of ballots examined were invalid And finally, Arizona Republican Gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake's legal team dropped a potential legal bomb on Wednesday, reports RedState.com. She tweeted, “48 of 113 ballots reviewed during our examination were 19-inch ballots produced on 20-inch paper. This one-inch discrepancy caused chaos on Election Day, causing the mass rejection of these votes as they were attempted to be read through the tabulators.” That means that 42.5% of the ballots examined were invalid. While the Democrat, Katie Hobbs, was declared the winner, she won by just 17,116 votes, a differential of seven-tenths of one percentage point, reports The National Review.  Lake is hoping this review might lead to calling Hobbs' victory into question. One of the overriding themes of this Christmas podcast is that when Jesus came to this earth, He brought with Him all the promises of God; he brought everything we need to live life abundantly. John 10:10b. We may grow impatient and think He has forgotten us but, unlike man, God does not forget. We are going to look at two people who waited for many years to see God fulfill His promise to them and those two people are Anna and Simeon. Our scriptures are found in Luke 2:25‑27 and 36‑38.ClosingThank you for being with us today on CGM Christmas Podcast. Listen to Christmas Driving now on Spotify. “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen / Pathways / The Kesh” by Abbots Cross from Christmas Visions That was from today's special holiday guest–Abbots Cross. They are on the latest Celtic Christmas Playlist-Christmas Driving Music. HOLIDAY FEATURE: Abbots Cross Pair up two experienced musicians who enjoy Celtic music and what do you get? Well, in this case, you get Abbots Cross! One half of this duo is Alan Booth, who plays guitar, fiddle, and provides the vocals for the group. Alan comes from a musical family and has been steeped in it all his life, starting with piano at the tender age of five, and having two music teachers for parents. He even does musical volunteer work in the Pittsburgh area where he's from—and has traveled all the way to Kenya to share his deep love of singing and playing instruments.  The second half of this duo is Mike Clancy, who provides the percussion, as well as the Irish flute and whistles to the mix. Also a seasoned musician, he has performed for several of the Broadway shows that have traveled to Pittsburgh. Mike plays with several bands in addition to Abbots Cross, and has even created original jazz compositions and released them to CD himself.  It's easy to see how the blending of these two men would provide the foundation for a solid band, and they do come together well to highlight their considerable talents! The holiday album, “Christmas Visions” is a 10-track offering that has such interesting arrangements—and they are deftly played. Clancy's flute takes center stage in many of these tracks, and it just adds so much to the music. In particular, God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen is just fantastic. These guys know how to stay true to the spirit of a holiday song while experimenting with what you can do with the music. Everything on this album has a very natural, free-flowing feel to it. It's as if the arrangements are loose and the two musicians just get in the groove and have a good time pushing their abilities. A veritable Christmas “jam session”! Don't miss Si Bheag, Si Mhor / The First Noel. It's hauntingly beautiful, beginning with the flute and then picking up the guitar gently in the background. This track builds slowly and easily with a warmth and genuineness that is very pleasing. Deck the Halls is happy and cheery as it should be, but also paired with a Christmas Eve Reel, adding that Celtic flavor and appeal.  This holiday compilation by Abbots Cross is a real treat, and a standout among the many Christmas albums. Don't miss the chance to add something different to your collection of Celtic music that will help you get into the mood for celebrating!  “Si Bheag, Si Mhor/The First Noel” by Abbots Cross from Christmas Visions   IF YOU ENJOY THIS ARTIST... It features Christmas music from Runa, Stephanie Claussen, David Pedrick, Matt & Shannon Heaton, Steel Clover, Mark O'Connor, Marc Gunn, deCeadaoin, Andrew D. This Celtic band didn't stay put in Houston for long though, and soon they were off--traveling all over the U.S., and even abroad. They've performed in Canada, Scotland, and Greece, among other places over the years, as well as providing entertainment on a number of different cruise ships. This great mixture of experiences has allowed the band the opportunity to truly hone their live shows, and put a shine on their ability to play together in a variety of different contexts. It has also given them a great deal of expertise in terms of playing Celtic tunes.   The Rogues are no amateurs when it comes to playing their instruments either, and band members have won prestigious music competitions, including first place in the World Pipe Band Championships in Grade III in 1998. If pressed to describe them, you could say they take their music seriously, but they don't take themselves too seriously, which results in a nice mash up of outstanding musicianship and good fun—it really works out well. Plus, you know a band is not messing around when they wind up with their own tartan in the Scottish Register of Tartans. That's dedication to the Celtic genre at a deep level.   You can't help but notice a full pipe sound and a lot of percussion when you listen to this band play, but they are also capable of music that pulls at the heartstrings. The variety of instruments, arrangements, and pairings keeps things interesting, no matter how familiar the tune. This is especially evident on The Rogues 2013 Christmas album, Hellbound Sleigh, where you'll hear tried-and-true favorites such as “We Wish You a Merry Christmas” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” in a very different light. Be sure to listen to the "O Holy Night / Ave Maria” track, which has an almost haunting feel to it—in the best possible way. And—don't miss "Jingle Bells/Good King Wenceslas” for a rousing take on this classic that showcases the pipes front and center.   The best part about this festive album though is the fact that there are also a few tracks you won't find in every Christmas collection, making it a great pick for your music rotation this holiday season. Keep it all to yourself and enjoy listening at home, or ship it over to a friend or family member that needs a little bit ‘o cheer in the stocking.   Find out more about The Rogues at therogues.com    If you hear music you love, then support the artists. Welcome to Hang the Holly. Each of the 13 tracks here offers something a little bit unconventional. The first track, "Brightest and Best / Gaudete / Noel Nouvelet” starts out with voice as instrument, blended harmonies softly wafting around before things pick up speed midway through alongside a percussive beat. RUNA seems to enjoy challenging the listener by defying the more typical patterns one's ear has learned to expect in favor of going where the muse leads them. For example, you've never heard “O Come, O Come, Emmanuel” done like this before! Those who enjoy a different take on things will want to pick this album up to go alongside their more tried-and-true favorites. It will provide just the right amount of contrast—as well as something to keep things interesting.   Track 3, "Christ Child Lullaby / Dún do Shúil” offers a hymn/lullaby that's blended in three languages; English, Irish Gaelic, and the original Scots Gaelic. This provides an additional soothing feel alongside the comforting rhythm of the lullaby itself. It's a nice take, a simple arrangement, and an interesting inclusion. Very easy on the ears. Juxtapose that track with the next, "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”, which features a funky vibe and a perky, upbeat sound and you have the perfect way to sum up this grouping of songs…non-traditional, yet intriguing!   It's very tough to be experimental—without being too experimental. After all, part of the charm of holiday music is the fact that it's familiar. That said, RUNA doesn't abandon the thread entirely, they merely embellish on it in their own way—which seems to be a great way to compromise. In all, the band isn't intent on exploring just for the sake of being different. You get the sense that they are doing it to create depth, and to be true to the perspective that has developed within them as musicians.   Their “Instrumental Medley” both pays homage to Christmas music and showcases the skill of the musicians, and while “Silent Night” maybe isn't as predictable as the standard radio holiday version, it's every bit as lovely—as well as a nod to the Austrian “Stille Nacht”. The band's liner notes sum this choice up well, saying, There is something magical about returning to the roots of such an iconic carol and to rediscover the beauty and depth in its simplicity.” And, indeed, there is.   This album is perfect for those looking to expand their collection of holiday music, without having things become too repetitive. You'll find fresh arrangements throughout, and enough holiday spirit to go around the table—twice.   Find out more about Runa at runamusic.com.   If you hear music you love, then support the artists. Welcome to Hang the Holly. I'll introduce you to Stephanie Claussen as we take an inside look at artists in the latest episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast.    We Wish You A Merry Christmas is the 3rd episode of 2020 and show #57. It features Christmas music from Laura MacKenzie, Emish, Steel Clover, Seamus Kennedy, Stephanie Claussen, David Pedrick, The Barra MacNeils, Jennifer Cutting's Ocean Orchestra, Haggis Rampant, Jed Marum, The Rogues, Marc Gunn & Mikey Mason, Andrew D. Not only have Stephanie Claussen's skills been recognized with the title of 2018 US National Scottish Harp Champion, but this Minnesota-based harpist also runs her own harp studio, and travels to play for audiences all over the upper Midwest area of the United States. Claussen is classically trained, and the Celtic influences are easy to hear throughout her style. She is crystal-clear and very enjoyable to listen to on the strings of this enchanting instrument.   Claussen has released five solo albums, starting in 2002. She has also collaborated with other artists throughout her career. Since Celtic songs are her specialty, it makes sense that she would craft a Christmas album. After all, what other instrument brings forth the true magic of the holiday more than the harp? The mood that this music calls forth is at once elegant and otherworldly; especially at the hands of an expert harpist. There really isn't anything quite like it. Not only is there the magnificent Celtic flavor, there's also an old-fashioned, medieval charm to it all. It makes for a nice pairing.   On Light So Brilliant: Carols and Tunes for Christmas, her collection of Christmas music offers 15 tracks which will add warmth and delight to any holiday gathering. This solo harp album would also be perfect to enjoy by the fire, or while sipping a hot cuppa and taking in the majesty of a fully decorated tree. You'll hear holiday favorites such as “We Three Kings” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”… but that's not all. Claussen also stocks the track listings with a delicate rendition of "Bouree d'Avignon” and other rewarding offerings, providing a full spectrum of beautiful music to round out any holiday music collection. Whether you want to keep it all to yourself or give this album as a gift, it's well worth a listen!   Although this artist has just one Christmas album, really any of her albums would mix in well with a holiday vibe. Some instruments just have that “festive” feel to them, and the harp is definitely one of them. It puts a little spring in the step and happiness in the heart—which is what we call holiday spirit!   Find out more about Stephanie Claussen at www.stephanieclaussen.com.   If you hear music you love, then support the artists.
