Richard Miller has been part of the Henry’s Child family since Thom joined the band and has remained close with the guys throughout various projects. He’s also a huge fan of Seven Second Circle, the “prog” HC. In today’s “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” Podcast, Thom talks to Richard about their shared group “Hack” that they joined with Rex Morningstar and how playing a backyard party ended up getting Richard to join “The American Girls” in Portland. “The American Girls” were the last band signed to Elemental Records and eventually got signed to Sony. Richard cut one of his songs with Andrew Smith on vocals (“Speak to Me”) and anyone close to the Eugene music scene in the mid-90’s will recognize the guitar players we talk about in this episode. Enjoy this fun conversation between two good friends with poor taste in jokes and good taste in music. Thom also gives updates about the new Henry’s Child CD “Listen Closely” that will be out very soon. In Part 2 of Andy Makin’s “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” Podcast, Andy and Rich discuss music. What’s particularly interesting about this episode is how Andy gives the English perspective to the bands we know and love, like Whitesnake, Judas Priest and Iron Maiden. Back in 1999, Andy Makin saw an ad on the Henrys Child website where they were looking for a singer. With little more than some pinners in his pocket, Andy jumped on a plane, flew from the UK to the states and instantly became part of the Henry’s Child family. In less than 3 months, Andy, RIch, Jarrett, Doug and Thom recorded a full-length record at the home studio in Creswell. They got to perform one show in Salem before his Visa ran out. The time together was brief, but the impact was lasting. In Part 1 of Andy Makin’s “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” Podcast you get to hear Andy’s origins, how he sang in Adrian Smith’s band “Psycho Motel” and how he got his current band “Nine Miles Down” together. Enjoy this awesome conversation with a talented singer and a permanent Henry’s Child Family member. Carey Rich is a staple around South Carolina and his basketball knowledge is second to none. It is always good just to set down and listen to the stories he has. In this episode we got to do just that. Rich played at the University of South Carolina under Coach Eddie Fogler. He has stayed around the game and now has numerous events and really puts on for the kids in his city. When we get together, we can get a little long winded, but that is what basketball hoop heads do. Enjoy! John Colgate braved Thom’s Portland office and sat down to talk about music: Jollymon, Assisted Living and Blyss. John is one amazing dude and not just a phenomenal guitar player, but one of the coolest guys you’ll ever meet. If you want to know some of the “secrets” of our kindred brothers, Jollymon, you’re gonna get them in this Podcast. We talk about Spanking Sessions at “Cape Fear”, how he broke his ankle before a show in Albuquerque and how a popular contemporary Christian rock band made Blyss change their name to Assisted Living. He gets pretty zen when it comes to the Jollymon philosophy of music and future goals, which is a breath of fresh air to hear these days. John’s creative mission is a pure one that any music connoisseur (or lover of music) will deeply appreciate. See you all tomorrow night at the Broadway Metro (located at 43 W. Broadway in Eugene, Oregon) for the premiere of “The Stars In Your Eyes” music video. As a founding member of Two Minutes Hate, Thresher and TV616, Keith Brown was a staple on the Pacific Northwest Music Scene. Tommy & Keith take a leisurely jog down memory lane. We learn how these Grants Pass guys made it up to Eugene (and eventually landed in Portland), bringing along with them their unique and grinding sound that made them a stand-out, powerhouse of a band on the scene in the early 90’s. These guys were hugely influential to Henry’s Child because we played so many shows with them. Among other things, we discuss how our common connection to *she-whom-cannot-be-mentioned* actually led to a stronger bond between our bands, what Tommy always looks for at Record Stores and why we had no choice but to be present to our craft. Keith divulges the secrets of how Thresher synched their video with playing live, he tells how a Sunday evening residency at Dante’s leads to creating Drummatica and what the future holds for his music. Last week our friend Rich Swanson found a box of old cassette tapes. This box included some old Floater recordings, Two Minutes Hate (lead by Scott Watkins & Keith Brown) and some very old Henry’s Child songs. He gave some of these cassettes to our friend Steve Rogers and he was able to digitize them. There are lots of gems on there, but one song in particular stuck out to me and so I chose to do a podcast about it. It’s an old song, but a goodie and one that has some nice bones to it. This then poses the question: Should Henry’s Child re-record some older songs? Would you be interested in hearing songs from “Mumbles and Screams” or “Drink Me” re-recorded? Enjoy! This is a little bit of an experiment: In preparation for interviewing Scott Watkins of After the Rain, Thom and Rich started testing mics for the purposes of testing. Little did they know that after some Laphroaig on ice that they’d been talking for almost an hour in a Grants Pass hotel room. They discuss a myriad of topics, ranging from cell phone usage, German pancakes and why thrift store shopping is popular. This podcast cuts off abruptly as Scott and Rebecca show up, but the discussion in between is gold. Also, we’ve got a Video Release show in Eugene on 9/28 at the Broadway Metro and an upcoming show on 10/25 at Sessions Music Hall with Toxic Zombie and After The Rain. Carey Rich lands his spaceship to talk to Thom about Jollymon, music and the upcoming Record Release show at Sessions Music Hall (formerly HiFi Music Lounge) in Eugene. Possessed briefly by the spirit of Kelly Clarkson, Carey talks about the making of VoidWalker and how the songs for that record came together. Carey revisits some of Jollymon’s history and talks about the different guitar players that have been in the band over the years. This gives way to commentary about the scene in the early 90’s along with Jollymon’s rapid rise, including headlining shows in Seattle at some pretty infamous clubs. We talk about the Jollymon Record Release show in Portland and when a stage show becomes a shtick. We talked about where Jollymon recorded VoidWalker and the mastering of the new Henry’s Child Record. We end this Podcast with a “band name” game where we have fun with each other’s childhood band names. Farmer Grief is the talented keyboard player for Aloe Blacc, but before he took on that role he was a friend of Henry’s Child, going on Tour with them and helping them out whenever he could. Farmer sat down to talk to Thom and what came out of that conversation is one of the best “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” episodes to date. These two friends have a lot of history together and aren’t afraid to be expressed. For example, you will learn how NOT moving to California forced Thom and Farmer to live together and why Thom lived for a brief period of time in Farmer’s darkroom. (Yes, an actual darkroom where photos get developed). Farmer talks about working at Gerlach’s Camera Stores and how the band Big Hippie formed when Jake Morton, Harley Grey and Kalani Makanui joined Farmer, starting off as a High School Battle of the Bands. As far as the music business, we talk about the pros and cons of in-ear monitors (and what they represent), the benefits of using & not using a click track for live performances and Farmer’s fool-proof way to politely not have to speak to your seatmate on flights to shows. Farmer tells a great story about how he and Rex (during the Henry’s Child years) got invited to a private Absolut Vodka party the night we played Hollywood and he tells the story of how he met and ended up writing with Aloe Blacc. Farmer finishes this conversation with some sage advice about how Empathy is the best way to build a network of folks who can help you with your music. Thom sits down with Soriah, a Tuvan Throat Singer who has played with an incredibly diverse group of folks, including Rob Wynia of Floater and David J from Bauhaus. The name “Soriah” is a spirit suit worn for performance: A state of trance and gnosis that he gets into during his performances. We both agreed that the feeling from performing music had the potential to become “spiritual” in the sense that there are few words that can describe the feeling it brings. We learn that his father was part of Los Sputniks, a mexican rock band that was popular in Mexico City during the mid-60’s, so music always played a part in Soriah’s life. We also learn how Jets and Airplane noises played a part as well. Soriah was exposed to Tuvan Throat Singing from a mix CD given to him by a friend. He then developed this passion the ended up with him meeting and learning from Tuvan throat singer and eventually a trip to Tuva was in order. Thom sits down with Carey Rich, vocalist and bass player for the band Jollymon. Thom learns how Jollymon chose to get back together in 2016. We talk about how Carey got into music and how his parents were not only influential, but how they supported him learning music. Carey struggled in school but by 11th grade was sent to Washington DC where he learned theory on drums, guitar and bass. His music teacher in High School suggested that he come out to the West Coast. And Carey did! He tells a story about staying with some “nuclear hippies” led him from Portland to Eugene...Yes, it’s a good story about a community towel. Carey tells the tale of how he answered an ad at a music store (Karl’s ad), Karl knew Greg and they ended up jamming together and starting a band. Carey tells us how they chose the name “Jollymon” in quick preparation for a show at what would soon become “John Henry’s”, a classic Eugene live-music staple. Carey calls Jollymon both “Lucky” and “Charmed”. He tells the story of playing one epic party in Portland where they caught the eye of Sweaty Nipples, who got them to open a Valentine’s Day WOW Hall show. This quickly propelled them to headlining large local venues like Crystal Ballroom and Roseland (both in Portland). Carey talks about their new Download “Tsunami” and we play the entire song on the Podcast. This was a fun conversation that kept us both laughing.
