When it comes to recognizable icons, few rival Nike's Swoosh, designed by student designer Carolyn Davidson for $35. We unpack her quiet career, late recognition, and lasting influence with guest Sarah Williams, Co-CEO of Beardwood & Co. and President of AIGA NY._______Support this podcast with a small donation: Buy Me A CoffeeThis show is powered by branding and design studio Nice PeopleJoin this podcast and the Patreon community: patreon.com/womendesignersyoushouldknowHave a 1:1 mentor call with Amber Asay: intro.co/amberasay_______About Carolyn Davidson:We're pulling back the curtain on one of design's most enduring marks: the Nike Swoosh. In 1971, Portland State University student Carolyn Davidson sketched a fluid, wing-like “stripe” directly over a shoe drawing—a fast, simple symbol that Phil Knight didn't love at first but chose under production pressure. She invoiced $35, kept freelancing for the scrappy company as it rebranded from Blue Ribbon Sports to Nike, and later stepped away from the spotlight. Years afterward, Nike surprised her with a gold Swoosh ring and stock—an act of overdue recognition that grew to life-changing value. We trace Davidson's process, her broader early contributions beyond the logo, and how the Swoosh eventually stood alone without the wordmark. About Sarah Williams:Sarah Williams is Co-CEO of Beardwood & Co. and President of AIGA New York. While most conversations about generative AI focus on chatbots, Thomas Wiecki (PyMC Labs, PyMC) has been building systems that help companies make actual business decisions. In this episode, he shares how Bayesian modeling and synthetic consumers can be combined with LLMs to simulate customer reactions, guide marketing spend, and support strategy. Drawing from his work with Colgate and others, Thomas explains how to scale survey methods with AI, where agents fit into analytics workflows, and what it takes to make these systems reliable. We talk through: Using LLMs as “synthetic consumers” to simulate surveys and test product ideas How Bayesian modeling and causal graphs enable transparent, trustworthy decision-making Building closed-loop systems where AI generates and critiques ideas Guardrails for multi-agent workflows in marketing mix modeling Where generative AI breaks (and how to detect failure modes) The balance between useful models and “correct” models If you've ever wondered how to move from flashy prototypes to AI systems that actually inform business strategy, this episode shows what it takes. A couple of major projects that the Louisville area has been watching for years appear to be inching forward — and we chat about them on the latest episode of the Access Louisville podcast. The two projects are the One Park development effort in Louisville and the redevelopment effort around the former Colgate-Palmolive Co. plant in Clarksville, Indiana. One Park is a massive mixed-use high-rise development from Jefferson Development Group planned near the intersection of Lexington Road and Grinstead Drive. Final state approval for tax increment financing, or TIF, for that project is “a couple weeks away,” the One Park team told Louisville Business First and WDRB News in a joint report. Nothing has really happened with the project since Kentucky's incentives board gave the first of two approvals needed to provide state support for the estimated $554 million development in early 2024.The news on Colgate is a new development team with Louisville-based Weyland Ventures at the helm. Weyland Ventures says it has plans for the historic former toothpaste factory, which closed in 2007. It's been used by businesses since but town officials have long wanted to see the riverfront property developed for something greater. Weyland joins the effort as an eminent domain case — brought by the town of Clarksville to acquire the former plant — has been dismissed in the wake of a settlement.“Their expertise in working collaboratively with communities to create vibrant and economically sustainable districts anchored by historic properties will result in a project of which we will all be proud," a statement from the town reads. We also chat about the latest with a new middle school being developed at the former Passport Health Plan site at 18th and Broadway, a new housing development in West Louisville and a new science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) building in the works from Simmons College. To wrap up the show, we talk about a new Five Iron Golf simulator coming to Downtown Louisville and the latest with a plan to build a new whitewater attraction at Origin Park in Clarksville. What if the most important financial decision you ever make is the one you're told not to?In this episode of Secrets to Abundant Living, Amy Sylvis sits down with Pia McFarland, Sales Director and GM at MCI Miritz Citrus Intercontinental LLC, to unpack what it really means to build an abundant life from scratch. A Colgate grad with no formal finance background, no family safety net, and no inherited wealth, Pia has built a life of both financial and personal freedom through bold decisions, self-education, and an unapologetic commitment to doing things differently. From launching a multimillion-dollar business while raising a toddler, to investing in real estate and empowering her son with generational tools, Pia's journey is anything but traditional. She challenges limiting beliefs around women and money, dismantles the myth of perfection in investing, and proves that courage, not credentials, is the true starting point of wealth-building.If you've ever felt behind, boxed in, or uncertain about your next move, this episode will remind you: it's never too late to rewrite the story.Connect with Pia McFarland:www.linkedin.com/in/pia-henzi-
