With the release of Absolute Batman #15 and the big reveal of Absolute Joker, we're excited to welcome artist Jockonto the show for the first time. We would consider this comic an event even without the gnarly origin story at its center. This is also a big reunion for the artist and his writer collaborator, Scott Snyder. They've been delivering killer Batman comics since The Black Mirror, and have already re-invented the Joker concept in The Batman Who Laughs. However, the Absolute Universe allows them to swing for the fences in a way that the main continuity never could. And, as you'll hear, this required a little recalibration from Jock. Thankfully, Jock grew up consuming some of the most radical comics on the planet, 2000 AD. These Mega-City One stories, often featuring the iconic Judge Dredd, shaped Jock's imagination and taught him the unique power of a visual narrative. They also revealed why we must never be too enamored of the characters and stories we adore. Conformity is abhorrent. Toys are meant to be broken because that's the direct result of good, continuous, serious play. If you keep them precious on the shelf, they get dusty and stiff. To understand characters like Batman and Judge Dredd, we must constantly redefine them, whittling them down to their defining characteristics. We discuss with Jock how he had to recalibrate his idea of Batman and Joker before taking on Absolute Batman #15. We talk about his new 2000 AD release, The Art of Judge Dredd by Jock. We examine how 2000 AD continues to influence his work, including Absolute Joker, and how he crafts certain two-page spreads in this comic. Absolute Batman #15 is out now from DC Comics. It's written by Scott Snyder, illustrated by Jock, colored by Frank Martin, and lettered by Clayton Cowles. You can continue this conversation with Jock by following him on Blue Skyand Instagram. Written by Godzilla Kei-Sei Scribe Tim Seeley and illustrated by the brilliant Turtle artist behind the Nightwatcher series, as well as the Stranger Things/TMNT crossover, Fero Pe, this new series finally brings two of our favorite franchises together. How can this reptilian miracle be? Long before the organization was corrupted by Shredder, the Foot Clan's original purpose was to save Japan from Kaiju! Swiss tenor Eric Tappy (19 May 1931 – 11 June 2024) excelled in so many different musical styles, eras, and genres, that when one considers his artistic achievement systematically, as a whole, one is positively stunned at all that he achieved, and that within a relatively short international career that extended barely 20 years. In addition, at the beginning of his career, his voice was that of a light lyric tenor, but gradually he came to sing heavier roles such as Idomeneo and Tito. The episode considers his biography and the trajectory of that career, touching upon his opera and concert work which ranged from early Baroque through contemporary. For the first ten years of his adult life, he worked as a teacher, gradually gaining enough exposure that he was able to fully devote himself to his singing career after he won several international singing competitions. Tappy is heard in the episode in concert work of Bach, Berlioz, Haydn, and contemporary Dutch composer Rudolf Escher; art songs by both Franz Schubert and Lili Boulanger; and operas by Monteverdi, Gounod, Mozart, and Debussy (his Pelléas was as legendary as his Monteverdi and Mozart impersonations). In addition, Tappy is heard in live and radio recordings of work by his fellow Swiss compatriots Arthur Honegger, Frank Martin, Constantin Régamey, and Hermann Suter. Guest singers include Countermelody favorites Ileana Cotrubaș, Rachel Yakar, Hugues Cuénod, Edda Moser, and Gino Quilico; musical collaborators include Ernest Ansermet, Michel Corboz, Nino Sanzogno, John Pritchard, Armin Jordan, Hans Münch (brother of Charles), Colin Davis, Hans Vonk, and Jean Françaix, among others. Prepare to be surprised and delighted by this great singer, who ended his active singing career at the age of only 50 but who continued as a formative and beloved teacher well into his old age. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and author yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. Before Chip Zdarsky, Valerio Schiti and Frank Martin's Captain America shield slashes into stores this Wednesday, I had a chance to converse with Chip about the title, as well as his (and Rachael Stott, Tamra Bonvillain and Ariana Maher's) White House Robot Romance from DSTLRY – going into how it feels to write books with these storylines during this political climate, as well as a wealth of other stuff primarily about Captain America and how he views the character and the mythos. I've been a big fan of Chip Zdarsky since his Spectacular Spider-Man book way back in 2017, and he was the first comics creator I ever met in person, so getting to interview him was a dream come true. The conversation we had about these books, especially Captain America, was a real eye opener in a lot of ways. I even got to talk about one of my criticisms of Avengers: Twilight's ending with him and how that might influence how he writes Captain America, which certainly left me very inquisitive about how this book is going to turn out. I also asked about Gundam (obviously), which he covered with his friends over at his manga podcast Mangasplaining, so be sure to check that out. Captain America #1 hits stores this Wednesday, July 2nd. Check out Chip Zdarsky over at his substack! Synopsis for Captain America #1 While Captain America slumbered in ice, the world changed — for better and for worse. Steve Rogers awakens to a reality where battles are fought in the shadows through secrets and subterfuge, and villains aren't so easy to identify. When a fledgling dictator named Victor Von Doom conquers Latveria, Steve faces a critical decision: adapt to a new kind of warfare, or forge his own path? And what will the choice he makes in the past mean for his future? Experience the untold tale of Captain America's first encounter with Doctor Doom as Chip Zdarsky and Valerio Schiti team up for a game-changing new era of CAPTAIN AMERICA! Synopsis for White House Robot Romance When Chef-9 learns that Service-1 is scheduled for immediate decommissioning, he makes an unprecedented choice: abandon his station, break protocol, and flee with Service-1 into the streets of Washington, D.C. But what starts as a desperate act of defiance quickly spirals into an international crisis. Service-1's memory banks hold highly classified state secrets—ones that could tilt the balance of power between America and Canada. As paranoia mounts and the military mobilizes, the runaway robots find themselves hunted by government agents. Be sure to check out our previous interview with Chip here, where he discusses his other work, Public Domain. We delve into the comics industry, its history, and what it's like working in it today. Everyone has a Batman opinion. Inside your imagination is a definitive Batman: a Batman who should behave this way, and a Batman who should not behave that way. Your tight grip on your Batman is why Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta's carefully considered Absolute Batman works so damn well. They fully understand and appreciate how the character has congealed over the last eight decades into a rock-solid idea. For the last eight months, alongside collaborators like Gabriel H. Walta, Marcos Martín, Frank Martin, Muntsa Vicente, and Clayton Cowles, Snyder and Dragotta have chipped away at the quintessential Dark Knight. They've altered elements of his origin, removed his social position, and rearranged his relationship with his rogues. Their Absolute Batman is a Bruce Wayne in motion, moving toward the impenetrable idea in your head, but struggling to match it. Here is a character growing into something, evolving into a recognizable hero for 2025. After confronting Mr. Freeze in issues seven and eight and facing the final days of Matches Malone, Bruce Wayne must reassess his war on Gotham City crime. What lessons did he learn from that awful day at The Zoo? Do his nights as Batman honor his father's sacrifice? As he fights to find himself, a grotesque demonic doppelganger appears - Bane, the nineties sensation who once broke a bat from another universe. FOC for Absolute Batman #9 is today (5/19/25)! Tell your retailers to order a copy for ya. With this comic, Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta have cooked an undeniable banquet. As the best alternate reality stories should, they've weaponized your knowledge of these characters against you, subverting in radically compelling ways, while delivering what should never be manipulated. Today's podcast features two conversations. Up first, Scott Snyder joins us for a lengthy look back at the last eight months of Absolute Batman. We discuss Bruce Wayne's continuing development into the Dark Knight, his complex relationship with Joe Chill, his father's killer, and why Bane had to arrive sooner rather than later. Secondly, Nick Dragotta pops in for a conversation about his ultra chonky Bane design, and how what we've seen so far is only a hint of his true monstrosity. Absolute Batman #9 will finally arrive in stores, courtesy of DC Comics, on June 11th. Follow Scott Snyder on Bluesky and Instagram, and subscribe to his Substack. Follow Nick Dragotta on Bluesky and Instagram. This Week's Sponsor We're sponsored by 2000 AD, the greatest comic you're not reading! Grab your time-traveling bow and arrow, folks! It's time to dive into the prehistoric playground of Turok: Evolution, the game that asked, “What if we took a beloved comic book series and cranked the dinosaur-blasting action up to 11?” Join us as we explore this Acclaim-produced, multi-console extravaganza that had gamers questioning whether they were playing as a noble warrior or just a really enthusiastic paleontologist with anger issues. This episode features the talented Frank Martin, comic writer extraordinaire and master of crowdfunded creativity. He'll help us navigate the treacherous terrain between comic panels and pixelated landscapes, all while dodging raptors and questioning the logic of futuristic weapons in a world where “cutting edge” usually refers to a particularly sharp rock. So strap on your loincloth, polish your plasma rifle, and get ready to explore a game that's part Jurassic Park, part quantum physics experiment gone wrong. Will Turok: Evolution stand the test of time, or will it go extinct faster than you can say “Cease and desist, dinosaur!”? Tune in to find out! Learn such things as: Is it cheating if you're making the game alongside the comics? Is it cheating if you rebooted the comics to be nothing like the comics were when the came out all those years ago? Is it cheating if you're just making Goldeneye in the early 2000s but with dinosaurs? And so much more! Today, we're diving into our Top 5 Deliveries or Couriers in film, exploring characters and stories where the act of delivering is pivotal, weaving through plots filled with intrigue, action, and high stakes. After our countdown, we'll review the 2024 thriller The Courier, centered around money laundering in Spain, and delve into the samurai action of Blade of the Immortal.Top 5 Deliveries or Couriers in Film:The Transporter (2002) - Jason Statham stars as Frank Martin, a professional "transporter" known for his strict rules about transporting packages, no questions asked. This film is famed for its high-octane action and the moral dilemmas Martin faces when he breaks his own rule.Premium Rush (2012) - Set against the backdrop of Manhattan, this film features Joseph Gordon-Levitt as a bike messenger caught in a deadly chase over a mysterious envelope. The high-speed cycling scenes are a thrill ride, emphasizing the risky side of courier work.Cast Away (2000) - Tom Hanks portrays a FedEx executive whose plane crashes, leaving him stranded on a deserted island. The film contrasts his professional commitment to delivery with his survival struggle, highlighted by his determination to deliver an unopened package.Blade Runner (1982) - Harrison Ford's Rick Deckard delivers justice to rogue replicants in this sci-fi classic. Deckard's role, though not a courier in the traditional sense, is pivotal in delivering societal balance in a dystopian future.John Wick (2014) - This action-packed film pivots around a seemingly mundane delivery—a puppy sent to John Wick, which rekindles his old hitman instincts after a tragic loss, sparking a deadly vendetta. The 2024 film The Courier dives into the dangerous world of money laundering within the picturesque yet deceptive setting of Spain. It follows the intense and risky life of a courier who becomes embroiled in an international scheme far beyond ordinary parcel delivery. The film explores the shadowy intersections of finance, crime, and personal survival, with thrilling sequences that underscore the high stakes of illegal courier activities.Kids Feature: Blade of the Immortal Switching gears, Blade of the Immortal follows a samurai charged with protecting a young girl. His mission to deliver her safely from her enemies embodies the essence of 'delivery' in a broader, more lethal context, offering action and a deep sense of honor amid relentless dangers.Today's episode promises an intriguing exploration of how deliveries, whether mundane or dangerous, shape the narratives and destinies in cinema. Join us as we unpack these delivery-driven adventures, from high-speed chases in Manhattan to the dangerous underbellies of international money laundering.
The instant the internet glimpsed Nick Dragotta's bold, BIG design for Absolute Batman, it lost its mind. Since the initial San Diego Comic-Con reveal, emotions have intensified around it, and the fan art has flowed like a dam burst. The first issue is still weeks away, but Final Order Cutoff is here (TODAY!), and Scott Snyder joins the podcast to discuss why they had to go thicc with the Bat. Absolute Batman is a radical reimagining based on the way our world is now. Bruce Wayne has no fortune in this new alternate timeline, which spins out of Absolute Power and The All In Special. This Batman's origin is familiar but has shifted just enough, so Snyder and Dragotta can speak to contemporary fears. How we observe the gun in 2024 differs significantly from how we observed it in 1939 when Batman first appeared. The same goes for billionaires and how they spend their money. What if Batman is what Joker always claims to be? The agent of chaos, born from horror to disrupt a corrupt order. The DNA is the same as the Bruce Wayne stalking the shadows in the main continuity, but the circumstances diverge drastically. Absolute Batman strips the Dark Knight of his financial crutch and, in doing so, highlights his essential truth. We begin our conversation with Scott Snyder by discussing how the Absolute Batman launch is similar to and different from The New 52 reboot. We question whether Batman is Batman without his money and why Bruce Wayne's relationship with his rogues also had to diverge from the usual continuity. Does Dick Grayson get mentioned? How about Batgirl? Joe Chill? Yes, yes, and yes. The first issue of Absolute Batman, published by DC, written by Scott Snyder, illustrated by Nick Dragotta, colored by Frank Martin, and lettered by Clayton Cowles, hits comic book shops on October 9th. No greater event than one of sport and today we are talking a real live David vs Goliath title bout as we chat with the man who knows he's the underdog but believes he's built for this moment. Undefeated Boxer Frank Martin looks to become the new WBA Lightweight World Champion pulling off the upset win over Boxing's best and biggest star, Gervonta "Tank" Davis on June 15th at the MGM Grand Las Vegas. In partnership with Fanatics, The Pivot Podcast shares an exclusive conversation as Ryan, Channing, and Fred sit down with Frank "The Ghost" Martin as he prepares to step in the ring with Tank Davis, 29-0 and 27 KOs. Both undefeated talents in their own right, Martin opens up about being an underdog, his anticipations for the showdown, and the pivotal moments that shaped his journey to the ring. Despite boasting a perfect record of 18-0, Martin remains criminally underrated within his division, a fact he confronts head-on as he discusses his mindset approaching what is undeniably the pinnacle of his career. Delving into the origins of his nickname "The Ghost," Martin dissects the nuances of his fighting style and its potential and favorable impact when he faces Davis, Alluding to the last time the two fighters met in Vegas, a few years ago in a sparring match at The Mayweather Boxing Gym, Martin reveals what really transpired that day and how the man himself, Floyd Mayweather, pulled the two fighters apart after several grueling rounds. Martin shares with Ryan, Channing and Fred the advice Mayweather has given him over the years and the one key piece he has kept at the forefront of his training, work when your opponent is resting and become mentally strong not just physically. Addressing the false narratives from the press conference and the trash talk spewed from his opponent, Martin turns the words into motivation and confidently tells the guys, "people think they know who I am and what I'm capable of, but have no idea, but soon they will see who Frank Martin really is." Calling the city of Detroit home, Martin's upbringing created his resilient mindset and unique athleticism, qualities that have raised his current status to become one of the sport's top talents and he explains how working with renowned boxing trainer, Derrick James, has edged even more, increasing his speed and athleticism to a level unlike anything Tank has experienced before. Martin says this moment is more than just a fight, it's for all the people who felt lost, misguided and not good enough, to know the good guy does win sometimes and this night is about the underdog.
