Ali Jafri is a multi-instrumentalist known for his involvement in various projects - as a member of David J's live band, playing rock- sitar for Pigface (or through his projects ARIEL, The Gotham City Drugstore, Saintfield or his solo work and so much more. His newest project is called The Shadow Majlis and his debut album called The Departure. This album has been Jafri's means to address his grief over losing his seven-year-old son Oisín, who passed away in September 2022 after a nine-month battle with diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma (a highly aggressive form of brain cancer), the dissolution of his conjugal relationship, and a year-long state of temporary homelessness. Produced and mixed by three-time Grammy Award winning producer David Bottrill (Peter Gabriel, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Tool, David Sylvian, Mastodon, Smashing Pumpkins, Muse, Real World Studios), with Darren McGill engineering the album. Mastered by Noah Mintz, the cover art was created by Stephen Seto (Splintercage). Multi-instrumentalist and primary songwriter and producer of the neo-psychedelic post punk band Trance to the Sun, Ashkelon Sain said the spirit of "Trance To The Sun" began in 1990. He said, “Our music is for the nocturnal environment, delivered in a trance-like state, made possible by the wealth of energy dealt to earth in the daytime by the sun.” The band released several albums, EPs, cassettes, CDs and compilations. Trance to the Sun has featured three full time vocalists: Zoe Wakefield, Dawn Wagner and Ingrid Blue. The band's recordings also included drummer Daniel Henderson and other guest musicians. One of his collaborative works include two albums (Atlan and Eztica) with Tuvan throat singer, Soriah on Projekt Records which is described as a "shamanistic ritual art experience, one that documents Soriah's explorations into his own ethnicity and heritage, amplified by the amazing soundscapes of Trance to the Sun guitarist Ashkelon Sain. This is the kind of musical spiritual journey that most others simply aspire to." https://www.projekt.comSain's latest project, Trance To The Moon is a collaboration with vocalist Monet Alarie. Check out the video "Except in Dreams." "Trance to the Moon" currently has two EPs Except in Dreams and Fire Within Glass and a forthcoming album to be released in early 2022. https://trancetothesun.bandcamp.comYou can also watch this video on my YouTube channel. Hello out there to the lost and found in this world and others. Welcome to the second part of the camping story. While unplugging ourselves from the surreal world of city life in the bizarre year of 2020, we found ourselves in the supernatural Pacific Northwest, the Gifford Pinchot National Forest in Washington State to be specific. My girlfriend Kristie and I got on the mic a day or two later to talk further about our shared experiences while camping. She reminds me of a few things I forgot about in the previous episode and some things I intentionally left out. In this episode we explore the area, the geology and anomalies of the Big Lava Bed, Mt Adams and Mt St. Helens, Indian Heaven Wilderness, subterranean lava tubes, hollow earth, mushrooms, howling and knocks within the darkened forest, sink holes, missing wildlife, missing people, and more. Since recording and producing these episodes nearly every forest in the supernatural northwest seems to have caught fire at the same time. We're lucky we left when we did. Likely this will lead to more legislation and regulation about wilderness recreation, camping and travel. As much as I believe these wildfires are a natural and predictable consequence, there is something strange about the timing with the windstorms creating the rapid spread and we know the powers that be will not let this tragedy go to waste. So get out there while you still can and suck up some of that juju!I hope you enjoy these episodes. I want to do more like these. Im getting bored with the media lies, the ridiculous Covid bullshit, the inverted "race war", and the terrestrial politics of division and distraction. This trip reminded me of the other games being played above and below and the importance of our participation, our attention, our awareness and energy. Check out the previous episode (58) for the relevant links to some of what we're talking about here. In the meantime, consider supporting the show in any way you can.I WANT TO HEAR YOUR STORIES OF WEIRD THINGS HAPPENING WHILE CAMPING, WHILE HIKING, WHILE MOVING THROUGH THE FORESTS OF OUR BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY.Email the show at upisdownpodcast@gmail.com and share your stories, let me know if you'd like to remain anonymous or if I may read them on the show. Perhaps we can Skype it up and produce an episode about your story!opening and closing music by Soriah : https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCHhs3-TPN1FvzSNVPHAxO6w((((S U P P O R T THE S H O W)))) https://paypal.me/frankenbones?locale.x=en_USVALUE-FOR-VALUE: Consider the value you have for yourself as a free person with the ability to think for yourself. You can decide for yourself what amount feels right for you. You don't need a PayPal account, just the generosity and will to support something you value and believe in. It all helps. This work is enjoyable but not easy, it takes time and costs money. Your support is needed and highly appreciated.https://paypal.me/frankenbones?locale.x=en_USYou will never find me on Youtube, they'd shut me down instantly, and it's only a matter of time before the podcast platform and hosting services become as compromised as the mainstream media. I will never accept sponsorships that require me to try and sell you bullshit products you not only don't need, but likely cannot afford anyway. I believe that Value-For-Value is indeed the future of free speech and expression, as anything else has already proved itself to be more than compromised at all levels; you can actually just sit back and watch monetized platforms disintegrate each and every day. Richard Miller has been part of the Henry’s Child family since Thom joined the band and has remained close with the guys throughout various projects. He’s also a huge fan of Seven Second Circle, the “prog” HC. In today’s “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” Podcast, Thom talks to Richard about their shared group “Hack” that they joined with Rex Morningstar and how playing a backyard party ended up getting Richard to join “The American Girls” in Portland. “The American Girls” were the last band signed to Elemental Records and eventually got signed to Sony. Richard cut one of his songs with Andrew Smith on vocals (“Speak to Me”) and anyone close to the Eugene music scene in the mid-90’s will recognize the guitar players we talk about in this episode. Enjoy this fun conversation between two good friends with poor taste in jokes and good taste in music. Thom also gives updates about the new Henry’s Child CD “Listen Closely” that will be out very soon. Back in 1999, Andy Makin saw an ad on the Henrys Child website where they were looking for a singer. With little more than some pinners in his pocket, Andy jumped on a plane, flew from the UK to the states and instantly became part of the Henry’s Child family. In less than 3 months, Andy, RIch, Jarrett, Doug and Thom recorded a full-length record at the home studio in Creswell. They got to perform one show in Salem before his Visa ran out. The time together was brief, but the impact was lasting. In Part 1 of Andy Makin’s “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” Podcast you get to hear Andy’s origins, how he sang in Adrian Smith’s band “Psycho Motel” and how he got his current band “Nine Miles Down” together. Enjoy this awesome conversation with a talented singer and a permanent Henry’s Child Family member. Season 5 - Episode 4: Lydia – The Working Woman Synopsis: The central theme of this episode is to convince you, the listeners that Ordinary Christians Do Matter. As we read in this chapter, ordinary people in fact have for more impact for Christ than they realize. As humans, we seek prestige and fame and often lose sight of our purpose as Christians. It can be depressing to hear what a person would do today to look or feel attractive. We have to remember that we are accepted for who we are, as we are and we are made in the image of Christ for a purpose. If we can remain in Christ and seek our purpose from him, then we too can be as effective as Lydia. Tune into this teaching segment as we learn how Silas fit the role of Sidekick to the Apostle Paul. Season 5 entitled, “Unknown” with Rev. Dr. Matthew Everhard. This podcast series is being made for the ordinary Christians who can have extraordinary influence. John Colgate braved Thom’s Portland office and sat down to talk about music: Jollymon, Assisted Living and Blyss. John is one amazing dude and not just a phenomenal guitar player, but one of the coolest guys you’ll ever meet. If you want to know some of the “secrets” of our kindred brothers, Jollymon, you’re gonna get them in this Podcast. We talk about Spanking Sessions at “Cape Fear”, how he broke his ankle before a show in Albuquerque and how a popular contemporary Christian rock band made Blyss change their name to Assisted Living. He gets pretty zen when it comes to the Jollymon philosophy of music and future goals, which is a breath of fresh air to hear these days. John’s creative mission is a pure one that any music connoisseur (or lover of music) will deeply appreciate. Enjoy this awesome conversation with John from Jollymon. ~~~ Come out to our last show of 2019 at Sessions Music Hall. As a founding member of Two Minutes Hate, Thresher and TV616, Keith Brown was a staple on the Pacific Northwest Music Scene. Tommy & Keith take a leisurely jog down memory lane. We learn how these Grants Pass guys made it up to Eugene (and eventually landed in Portland), bringing along with them their unique and grinding sound that made them a stand-out, powerhouse of a band on the scene in the early 90’s. These guys were hugely influential to Henry’s Child because we played so many shows with them. Among other things, we discuss how our common connection to *she-whom-cannot-be-mentioned* actually led to a stronger bond between our bands, what Tommy always looks for at Record Stores and why we had no choice but to be present to our craft. Keith divulges the secrets of how Thresher synched their video with playing live, he tells how a Sunday evening residency at Dante’s leads to creating Drummatica and what the future holds for his music. Last week our friend Rich Swanson found a box of old cassette tapes. This box included some old Floater recordings, Two Minutes Hate (lead by Scott Watkins & Keith Brown) and some very old Henry’s Child songs. He gave some of these cassettes to our friend Steve Rogers and he was able to digitize them. There are lots of gems on there, but one song in particular stuck out to me and so I chose to do a podcast about it. It’s an old song, but a goodie and one that has some nice bones to it. This then poses the question: Should Henry’s Child re-record some older songs? Would you be interested in hearing songs from “Mumbles and Screams” or “Drink Me” re-recorded? Enjoy! This is a little bit of an experiment: In preparation for interviewing Scott Watkins of After the Rain, Thom and Rich started testing mics for the purposes of testing. Little did they know that after some Laphroaig on ice that they’d been talking for almost an hour in a Grants Pass hotel room. They discuss a myriad of topics, ranging from cell phone usage, German pancakes and why thrift store shopping is popular. This podcast cuts off abruptly as Scott and Rebecca show up, but the discussion in between is gold. Also, we’ve got a Video Release show in Eugene on 9/28 at the Broadway Metro and an upcoming show on 10/25 at Sessions Music Hall with Toxic Zombie and After The Rain. Season 2 Episode 2: The Beauty of the Local Church with Rev. Dr. Matthew Everhard Introduction to Episode: During episode 2 of season 2, we discuss the beauty of the local church and its purpose. We tackle statements that are thought provoking. We answer questions that most people have, like what does catholic really mean? Is organized religion wrong? What does reformed worship look like? All of these questions are answered in this episode. Co-Host: Rev. Dr. Matthew Everhard is the Senior Pastor at Faith Church, EPC (Evangelical Presbyterian Church) in Brooksville, Florida. Matthew is married to his wife Kelly and has three children, Soriah, Elijah, and Simone. Matthew is not only a pastor/theologian but a writer and publisher. Matthew is the general editor for the Westminster Society Journal. Matthew's latest work his the publication of his dissertation on Jonathan Edwards, "A Theology of Joy: Jonathan Edwards and Eternal Happiness in the Holy Trinity" Podcast Episode Summary: The Church is necessary. Its role and purpose are needed in a world that does not seek the church. We dive into defining the Greek word ecclesia and how the church multiplies God's sovereign grace. In today's world, we have people that "worship" Beyonce and the band U2 and call it church. As Rev. Dr. Everhard explains, we are the "the called out ones" and we the church, should never cater to what the people desire in order to get them to come to church. It’s been since September of 2015 that Enrique Ugalde, also known as Soriah, has been on the podcast. He is, as I hope you know Oregon’s own Tuvan throat singer. Enrique is his given name and Soriah is the entity he becomes when he performs. He’ll be performing at the Old Church Concert Hall on Friday, May 17 with the Chirgilchin ensemble who are on tour from Tuva itself. They’ve actually regular visitors to Portland, having been here several times. We’ll play a piece by them at the end of our conversation with Enrique. It’s been a big year for him. Let’s find out why.
Carey Rich lands his spaceship to talk to Thom about Jollymon, music and the upcoming Record Release show at Sessions Music Hall (formerly HiFi Music Lounge) in Eugene. Possessed briefly by the spirit of Kelly Clarkson, Carey talks about the making of VoidWalker and how the songs for that record came together. Carey revisits some of Jollymon’s history and talks about the different guitar players that have been in the band over the years. This gives way to commentary about the scene in the early 90’s along with Jollymon’s rapid rise, including headlining shows in Seattle at some pretty infamous clubs. We talk about the Jollymon Record Release show in Portland and when a stage show becomes a shtick. We talked about where Jollymon recorded VoidWalker and the mastering of the new Henry’s Child Record. Farmer Grief is the talented keyboard player for Aloe Blacc, but before he took on that role he was a friend of Henry’s Child, going on Tour with them and helping them out whenever he could. Farmer sat down to talk to Thom and what came out of that conversation is one of the best “Am I Crazy or Am I Just Raving” episodes to date. These two friends have a lot of history together and aren’t afraid to be expressed. For example, you will learn how NOT moving to California forced Thom and Farmer to live together and why Thom lived for a brief period of time in Farmer’s darkroom. (Yes, an actual darkroom where photos get developed). Farmer talks about working at Gerlach’s Camera Stores and how the band Big Hippie formed when Jake Morton, Harley Grey and Kalani Makanui joined Farmer, starting off as a High School Battle of the Bands. As far as the music business, we talk about the pros and cons of in-ear monitors (and what they represent), the benefits of using & not using a click track for live performances and Farmer’s fool-proof way to politely not have to speak to your seatmate on flights to shows. Farmer tells a great story about how he and Rex (during the Henry’s Child years) got invited to a private Absolut Vodka party the night we played Hollywood and he tells the story of how he met and ended up writing with Aloe Blacc. Farmer finishes this conversation with some sage advice about how Empathy is the best way to build a network of folks who can help you with your music. Thom sits down with Soriah, a Tuvan Throat Singer who has played with an incredibly diverse group of folks, including Rob Wynia of Floater and David J from Bauhaus. The name “Soriah” is a spirit suit worn for performance: A state of trance and gnosis that he gets into during his performances. We both agreed that the feeling from performing music had the potential to become “spiritual” in the sense that there are few words that can describe the feeling it brings. We learn that his father was part of Los Sputniks, a mexican rock band that was popular in Mexico City during the mid-60’s, so music always played a part in Soriah’s life. We also learn how Jets and Airplane noises played a part as well. Soriah was exposed to Tuvan Throat Singing from a mix CD given to him by a friend. He then developed this passion the ended up with him meeting and learning from Tuvan throat singer and eventually a trip to Tuva was in order. Soriah also created a record with Daniel Riddle at Mazinga Studios. Soriah tells us about what Tuva is like and some interesting history and stories of the Tuvan folks. Enjoy this really great interview with a passionate and talented musician. September 17, 2015 You are in the coffeeshop with me and Tuvan throat singer Enrique Ugalde who you may know as Soriah. Once again we’re at World Cup Coffee and Tea at Northwest 18th and Glisan in Portland. You may not know what Tuvan throat singing is. You may not know where the hell Tuva is. If you don’t you sure as hell don’t know why Enrique, originally from California, now splitting his time between Portland an Tuva where he has won singing competions. Soriah is his performing name. This is going to be good.
