Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Kiffer Brown. Kathryn (Kiffer) Brown is the CEO and co-founder of Chanticleer Reviews and Chanticleer Int'l Book Awards (The CIBAs) that Discover Today's Best Books. The company differentiates itself with "under the hood" digital technology that increases the digital footprint of each book review and CIBA winner developed by her super-geek husband, Argus Brown. Kiffer has presented at events such as: Writer's Digest Conference in NYC, IBPA University, Women in Publishing Summit, Pacific Northwest Writers Conference, RWA National Conference, Historical Novel Society, BEA UpubU, ALLi, Left Coast Crime Conference, and many more. The annual Chanticleer Authors Conference held in Bellingham, WA features international best-selling authors such as Cathy Ace, Robert Dugoni, J.D. Barker, Ann Charles (and more!). The event focuses on marketing and book promotion, advanced writing craft, and Book-to-Film sessions. In this episode Kiffer and I discuss: Why there has never been a better time to be an author than NOW. What makes something a review as opposed to a write-up and the four types of reviews. How advanced reviews help in promoting your book and when you should start getting them. Plus, her #1 tip for writers. For more info and show notes: diymfa.com/378
Cathy Ace is an entertaining speaker; over the years she’s chatted engagingly, made complex Powerpoint presentations, and read her work or hosted and been Master of Ceremony for various events and conferences. Meet globetrotting psychologist and sleuth Cait Morgan. Cathy Ace had the great good fortune to travel the world during her corporate career. Which is lucky for us because her Cait Morgan mysteries are each set in a different location that Cathy has lived in or spent time in. The Corpse with the Crystal Skull is set in Jamaica and as we're all mostly confined to barracks these days, it's great to hear about sunny places far away, and vacationing with friends. In my interview with Cathy she mentions two mystery sites that she blogs for. 7CriminalMinds.blogspot.com features authors, including Cathy and two previous It's a Mystery podcast guests (Frank Zafiro and Terry Shames), answering questions about crime fiction, writing, publishing, and life. And KillerCharacters.com has a focus on cozy mysteries with a different author writing a post each day. Cathy posts on the 22nd of each month. This week's mystery author Cathy Ace’s Welsh-Canadian criminal psychologist sleuth Cait Morgan has encountered traditional, closed-circle puzzle plot whodunits in eight books, with a ninth being published in June 2020. This series of books has now been optioned for television by Free@Last TV, a UK production company. The plan is to present each book as a 90 minute made-for-TV movie, the same format used for the international hit ACORN series featuring MC Beaton's Agatha Raisin, which is made my Free@Last TV. Cathy's other series of books - The WISE Enquiries Agency Mysteries - feature a quartet of softly-boiled female PIs who solve quintessentially British cases from their stately home-based office in rural Wales. Her standalone novel of psychological suspense, The Wrong Boy, is set in Wales, and became a #1 amazon bestseller. Shortlisted for the Bony Blithe Award three times in four years, winning in 2015, she’s also been shortlisted for an Arthur Ellis Award for Best Short Story. Cathy was born and raised in Wales, though she now lives in Canada. Except from The Corpse with the Crystal Skull Breakfast and a Body The conversation around the breakfast table was understandably muted; we’d all had a late night, and I, for one, was feeling the effects of a few too many G and Ts. My darling husband, Bud, surveyed the food arranged on the mahogany sideboard with bleary eyes. His more-salt-than-pepper hair was still damp from the shower, but he was already sweating through his shirt; May in Jamaica can be exhaustingly humid. “Anybody want another mango? Or this last piece of banana bread?” Bud’s tone lacked enthusiasm. John Silver shook his head above his coffee cup, then scrunched his eyes, suggesting he wished he hadn’t made such a rash move. “Thanks, no,” he croaked, with a polite smile I read as a grimace. He looked tired; wiped out, in fact. I’d first met him when he’d helped out with a family matter in Amsterdam that Bud and I had been looking into, less than a year earlier; back then he’d looked vigorous, and in his prime. Now? He’d aged. A lot. I wondered why. Maybe it was work-related; I’m still not entirely sure what he does – he somehow provides coordination between a number of secret service operations around the world…lots of opportunities there for stress, I’d have thought. He looked as though he needed the week-long break he was just beginning with us. “Anyone fancy a Caesar?” Bud’s other ex-colleague, Jack White, forced a smile; they’d served together in the Vancouver Police Department for years, forging a friendship that had endured beyond their respective retirements. Jack glanced at his wife with a wink, rubbed a hand through his rapidly thinning hair, and groaned.
Host Pam Stack welcomes authors who are releasing books in the month of February 2020. Tonight Cathy Ace, the author of mysteries sits down to talk about her life around the world as her inspiration for her books. Author Alan Orloff came on board to discuss his new. Cathy and Alan are friends who blog at 7 Criminal Minds.
Last night I spoke to Cathy Ace and Alan Orloff on First Monday - my open mic night on Authors on the Air. Here are the things I learned about Cathy, who BTW, is just a hoot and has the best stories to tell. Her first piece of fiction was a short story that she wrote in a parking lot ono Baker Street near M&S (very well-known store in London). She had-wrote it on paper and her friend typed it up and she hand delivered it the next day - the deadline for contest entries. She won and was put into an anthology with some well-known authors like Dick Francis. Cathy has travelled the world and her characters in her mysteries reflect her world view. Cathy is warm, funny and so very friendly. Alan Orloff, who is releasing his new book I KNOW WHERE YOU SLEEP next week. We discussed his work and although I had a blonde moment and commented about Tara Laskowski, he promptly reminded me that it was Art Taylor that was married to Tara. Turns out Alan and Cathy know each other well and both blog for 7 Criminal Minds. I also gave some sage advice to Alan about moving to South Florida (avoid Palmetto bugs, falling iguanas, and other little quirky things that undoubtedly will be inspiration for many more books. Here is our podcast with my gratitude.

Cathy Ace jokes she followed the advice given to many beginner writers to “write what you know” and the result was her university lecturer sleuth Cait Morgan - a short, plus-sized Welsh-Canadian who's a bit bossy.” Rather like Cathy herself! Hi there, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler and today Cathy talks about the personal loss that propelled her into writing fiction, why she loves puzzle mysteries and the one thing she would change if she was starting over. Six things you'll learn from this Joys of Binge Reading episode: The jolt she needed to get writing All about her early and serendipitous success What she enjoys about being a Welsh Canadian The new domestic suspense that's getting her excited The writers she most admires And what she'd change if she were doing it all over again Where to find Cathy Ace: Website: http://cathyace.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/cathy.ace.author Twitter @AceCathy What follows is a "near as" transcript of our conversation, not word for word but pretty close to it, with links to important mentions. Jenny: But now, here's Cathy. . Hello there Cathy and welcome to the show, it's great to have you with us. Cathy: Thank you very much for inviting me along Jenny, it's a delight to be here. Cathy Ace - mystery author Jenny: Beginning at the beginning . . . .Was there a "Once Upon A Time" moment when you realised you had to write fiction or your life would somehow be incomplete? Was there a catalyst? Cathy: You know, that's a really interesting question Jenny. There was a point, and there was a catalyst. Unfortunately, it was the death of my father that was the catalyst. I think like so many people, the death of a parent suddenly makes us realise we're mortal. And if we're going to do something we feel passionate about, we should probably get off our backsides and do it. I had written one short story back in the 1980's and having had that published, and then having that recorded for BBC Radio - my parents and my family almost exploded with pride when it broadcast. The death of my father shortly thereafter did spur me on to say to myself, "if you're going to write crime fiction, get on with it". And so I did! Jenny: Yes, and it's a pretty remarkable success with that very first short story too, and the fact that it got such prominence- that must have been very encouraging for starters! Cathy: It was. To enter a competition with a short story, and to then have it published; it was fantastic. It then appeared on the GCSE English Language papers for British school students, which is what British school students do at 16 years old. It was just unbelievable. That was back in the 80's and the 90's, and it wasn't until 2007 that that it was picked up and broadcast on BBC Radio. Despite that large gap, during which I ran a business, that fictional thread was quite the magical thread I think. Jenny: You've now got two successful mystery series running . . . Cait Morgan, the academic with a photographic memory and a vulnerable past, and the WISE series – four women solving crimes from the office base of a Welsh stately home. Cait is an amateur sleuth and the WISE women are professional investigators. Can you talk a little about how these two different series originated. . A WISE agency mystery from Cathy Ace Cathy: What I wanted to do with these two different sets of characters was to go on the basis on what I know, and what I think most avid readers of crime fiction know. Agatha Christie, she's my favourite author, and she has Miss Marple, the cosy sleuth, and Hercule Poirot, the intensely intelligent private investigator. I sort of reversed those roles, in that my private investigators are much more cosy, albeit professional- and my cosy sleuth is much more brilliant. She's an academic, because at the time I wrote my first Cait Morgan mystery, I myself was teaching at a university and being a Welsh- Canadian and her...

From the seat of a concert hall piano, Pascal Rogé, one of the world's greatest interpreters of French piano music, leads us through a personal and musical journey of Erik Satie's Gymnopédies. You may not immediately know the title but in hearing just the first few notes you are most likely to know the music. Erik Satie's Gymnopédies are a collection of short, atmospheric pieces of which Gymnopédie No.1 is perhaps the most popular. Music historian and author Mark Prendergast has studied Satie's work and reveals the complex character of the man who revolutionised the 19th century classical music of Europe. Melbourne based artist Colin Duncan reflects on the music's 'physical form which takes you into space and time' and for him inspired a body of work created in brail. Murder Mystery writer Cathy Ace remembers how this meditative music could shut out the noise of the city as she sped around London in her old brown mini, whilst Mathematician and author Ian Stewart explores the mathematics of this special piece and how music can touch our soul.
