How can we meet an aromatic plant and its essential oil on a deeper level beyond chemical constituents, reading reference books and a “this is good for that” viewpoint? This episode, and new series, considers the qualitative appreciation of aromatic plants and their essential oils. For instance, what do Lavender's qualities sound like, feel like? You guessed it, this episode features Lavender...Explore how Lavender transforms into sound through the synesthetic talent of Yuliana Kireyeva. Further inspired by the evocative works of James McNeill Whistler and the gentle melodies of Erik Satie, you're invited to feel the qualitative nature, the personality, of Lavender. Look forward to a guided body scan accompanied by Satie's Gymnopédie no. 1. And remember, to smell is to feel.
Programmation musicale :1. Gymnopédie orientale / H. A. Toker (Satie Deconstructed, 2021)2. Şehir Merkezi (City Life) / H.A. Toker (City Life, 2018)3. Elise got the blues / H.A. Toker (Beethoven Deconstructed, 2020) (c) Alperen KozaHébergé par Ausha. What's up, dudes? I'm running up that hill with Mike and Rusty from Snow in Southtown to talk about Kate: Kate Bush Christmas Special and her song “December Will Be Magic Again!” Released in 1979, it proves that the singer, only 21 at the time, was already a tour de force. A year later she released the Christmas song as a single. The special is a mix of live performances and choreographed dance to prerecorded music. The live portion was recorded BBC Pebble Mills Studios in front of an audience. The music for the dance was done at EMI Studios in London. After a rotoscoped animated introduction, Kate launches into renditions off “Violin,” Gymnopédie No. 1 by Satie, and “Symphony in Blue.” “Them Heavy People” follows with Kate garbed in sequins. Immediately a trio sings Peter Gabriel's in, and he serenades the audience with “Here Comes the Flood.” Kate performs “Ran Tan Waltz” then premieres “December Will Be Magic Again” on solo piano. Next comes “The Wedding List” about a vengeful bride and the duet “Another Day” with Peter Gabriel about a failed marriage. Finally, Kate enthralls us with “Egypt,” “The Man with a Child in His Eyes,” and “Don't Push Your Foot on the Heart Brake.” Does she hop in a garbage can and come out dressed like Sandy from the end of “Grease?” Why, yes. Yes she does.Stevie Nicks-like flowing black outfit? Yep. Fake beard and “Fiddler on the Roof” getup? Uh huh. Kate doing interpretative dance superimposed over her playing piano? Definitely! Philosopher Dr. Peg O'Connor stops by the Intentional Clinician podcast to talk to Paul Krauss MA LPC about how trauma may affect peoples' abilities to develop and cultivate what one philosopher calls "the essential arts of person-hood." Some of the essential arts of personhood include: imagining, hoping, having empathy, bodily dominion, and self-possession. Lacking those makes it far more difficult for a person to have self-respect, which in turn makes it much harder to be a full moral agent and to be taken as such by others. In this episode, trauma-informed therapist Paul Krauss MA LPC and Dr. Peg O'Connor discuss the intersections of trauma and the ability for people to cultivate the essential arts of personhood. Peg O'Connor is a Professor of Philosophy at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN, recovering alcoholic of 35 years, and author of Higher and Friendly Powers: Transforming Addiction and Suffering (Wildhouse Publications, 2022) and Life on the Rocks: Finding Meaning in Addiction and Recovery (Central Recovery Press, 2016). She writes the column “Philosophy Stirred, Not Shaken” for psychologytoday.com. In her free time, Peg is an avid tennis player and a black belt in taekwondo. She has worked in dog rescue for about 10 years and finds that her faith in humanity can be simultaneously shattered by meeting mistreated animals and restored by colleagues who are fiercely loving and caring advocates. Her own dog, Clooney, is a rescue and they spend their days together in the great Minneapolis area. With a selection of 24 pieces performed on piano solo or with subtle accompaniments of other instruments, PIANO MINIMALISM presents emblematic works of the piano repertoire, such as Gymnopèdie No.1, written by Erik Satie in 1888 and Prelude No.4 in E Minor, Op. 28 by Frédéric Chopin, both performed by international acclaimed pianist, Clara Sverner. The repertoire is completed by contemporary pieces by young artists, such as Isaiah Rizzo, an artist from Rio de Janeiro, with his pleasing Oblivion and Svanire; Raphael Veronese with the moving Spring and Eyes of the Soul, as well as works by ambient/crossover composer Corciolli, and also the pianists Daniel Grajew, Andrey Cechelero, and Flávio Franco Araújo.Purchase the music (without talk) at:Piano Minimalism (classicalmusicdiscoveries.store)Your purchase helps to support our show! This episode starts with a dramatic reading of a text exchange between the brothers Drouillard regarding Tchaikovsky's fear of his head falling off and a phobia known as glass delusion and goes on to discuss Erik Satie's Gymnopédies, Cotton Salad, Charles the Beloved, Charles the Mad, cholera, John Taylor the ophthalmic quack, the Metropolitan Church of Art of Jesus the Conductor, and a Bavarian princess who ate a grand piano made of glass. Father Art blesses us with his divine wisdom as well. I discuss the process of composing a variation of the classic piece Gymnopédie No.1, along with universal artistic principles that help the composing process.
Hello everyone!! In this new episode of the show I dive into some of the intricacies of how we can approach, understand, and even reconsider the ideas of genre in fiction. Both on their potential and their limitations to criticism and breaking apart gatekeeping efforts and the walls that harm our attempts at writing, reading, and understanding. That's the reason for the provocative title of this episode! On the necessary attitudes to question and think anew these ideas of genre and how we can critique to open up and create in new ways, instead of closing them off. It was a tad chaotic, but fun nevertheless, enjoy!!! Like a Millennial Pygmalion, 16-year-old Frankie Thomas was plucked from the streets of New York, into the glossy studios of Teen People magazine. Their photo appeared in the March 2004 issue of Teen People (the prom issue!), under the headline "Smooch-proof Lips". Among other things, Teen People's makeup artists suggested using lip liner as lipstick—it'll last longer—or layering gloss over a lip stain. As you'll hear in this episode, this was uncharted territory for Frankie. Frankie grew up in Chelsea, and went to the Friends Seminary, also known as the Quaker School. Founded in 1786, the school's former students include Kyra Sedgewick, Vera Wang, Amanda Peet, and Lena Dunham. Frankie has an MFA in fiction from the Iowa Writers' Workshop, and has written for The Paris Review; focusing on '90s pop culture, Young Adult literature, and queer aesthetics. Their writing career began with a teenage blog—you'll hear excerpts from this throughout this episode. Want to see Frankie's Teen People photo? Find it on Twitter and Instagram, at TeenPeoplePod, and on Tumblr: www.teenpeoplepod.tumblr.com. And check out my personal website, www.annasoper.ca. Sometimes there are simply no words to describe exactly what you want to express. Erik Satie dug deep into the history of language to find words that would best describe his latest works, altering them just a little bit for his own purposes.
