This week we are tackling free speech with a conversation with Freddy Weinberg about the Intellectual Dark Web.  Freddy is a thinker, a journalist and the host of the Live Learn Repeat Podcast.  Freddy and I discuss what, exactly, the IDW is, and whether or not free speech is at stake in our country.  Is political correctness a threat to our country or do words matter?     While the concept and definition of the Intellectual Dark Web is an ever shifting idea, Freddy insists that those interacting within it have two things in common: They don't buy into the orthodoxy of political ideology aka correctness. No matter which side. And, while peddling in ideas that need to be communicated, they are not beholden to the mainstream media.  Freddy gave us a few names of writers and thinkers that share these values. Right leaning thinkers: Jordan Peterson, Ben Shapiro, Christina Hoff Sommers Left leaning thinkers: Sam Harris, Brett Weinstein, Abby Martin, Debrah Soh Libertarian thinkers: Dave Rubin,Claire Lehman, Kmele Foster, Dave Smith Other names in the movement: Joe Rogan, Michael Malice Academics: Steven Pinker, Thaddeus Russell, Heather Heying, Douglas Murray,  Jonathan Haidt   Connect with Freddy!  Follow him on Instagram and Twitter and be sure to listen to his podcast, Live Learn Repeat.   Also mentioned in the episode: Joran & Sam's Intellectual Debates The New Right by Michael Malice A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole

Sophie Schiller's book, Transfer Day, is a special edition of Spy Island that was written to commemorate the upcoming 100th Anniversary of Transfer Day (1917-2017). Today's date is March 31, 2015, the 98th anniversary of the original Transfer Day. The pictures in the slideshow have red and white border to commemorate The Danish flag. Soren Jensen is a Danish journalist on a mission. He's traveling to St. Thomas to pursue a human interest story, but he's really on a personal quest to uncover secrets about his own family's past. The story concerns an old woman named Abigail Maduro, who claimed on her deathbed to have averted a German takeover of the Danish West Indies during WWI. While investigating the story, Soren meets up with Claire Lehman, Abigail's granddaughter, who shares her grandmother's diary with Soren, which transports them both back to 1916 with its intriguing tale of spies, saboteurs, a mad voodoo queen, and a lonely deserter from a German U-boat who desperately tries to escape his past. During one fateful night, Soren learns the explosive truth about his own family's past, and how everybody's life was changed forever on one fateful day: Transfer Day.

As the UK winter continues to bite, Sue Nelson tries to escape it all by going to visit a coral reef. Unfortunately for Sue, the coral reef is not in some sunny clime. Instead, it's an indoor coral reef at the brand new Coral Reef Research Unit at the University of Essex. Researchers are using the reef to look at the effects of ocean acidification on coral in a unique experiment. Sue meets David Smith and David Suggett from the Unit to find out exactly what they're up to. Later, Sue talks to Andy Morse from the University of Liverpool. Andy's an expert on the effects of climate change on the spread of infectious diseases. Sue finds out that as the climate changes and brings warmer and wetter weather, we might get more than we bargained for. Finally our correspondent in Antarctica - the British Antarctic Survey's medical doctor, Claire Lehman - meets a researcher who tells us how she finds out how the sea around the continent changes with the seasons.

This is a special edition of the Planet Earth podcast, featuring some of our favourite audio diaries from the past year. We've got scientists using cannons to study geese in Ireland, researchers collecting mongoose poo in Uganda, Darth Vader impressions from beneath Antarctic ice and tiger leeches in a researcher's pants. In the first feature, Tim Cockerill from the University of Cambridge gives us an insight into studying insects in pristine rainforests of northern Borneo, describing some of the downsides. Next, Michael Cant, also from the University of Exeter tells us how cooperative - or not, as the case may be - Ugandan mongooses are. We then head down to the freezing cold waters of Antarctica to hear how British Antarctic Survey doctor Claire Lehman gets on when she joins the dive team.
