Today we discuss war, regime change, cyber-attacks, libertarianism, and driving. In what ways are Israel's attack on Iran reminiscent of events from the past? Are the neo-cons back, or did they never go away? It would seem that we are being frog-marched to war. Speaking of destabilization: North America's largest publicly traded wholesale distributor of natural foods (UNFI) was hacked, leaving market shelves empty at tens of thousands of stores. In better news: Bret returned from FreedomFest, and provides a report, and discusses his model for Libertarianism 2.0. And: Matthew Crawford on why we drive. Which is better: horses or cars? We circle back to a discussion of efficiencies, coercion, and freedom.*****Our sponsors:Timeline: Accelerate the clearing of damaged mitochondria to improve strength and endurance: Go to http://www.timeline.com/darkhorse and use code darkhorse for 20% off your first order.Caraway: Non-toxic, beautiful, light ceramic cookware. Today we discuss hummingbirds, baby making, longevity hacking, and Jeffrey Epstein, before finishing up with a short discussion of the riots in LA. A new company is promising future parents that they will be able to create long-lived babies—what could go wrong? Also, how likely are they to be able to make good on their promises? We discuss, as always, with an evolutionary lens. Also: what a great business model! And: it is easier to fix something that is broken than it is to improve something that works. We begin with the HHS announcement that Covid shots will no longer be recommended to healthy children and pregnant women. What does healthy mean? And what are the conditions that provide release from liability for vaccine makers? Then, a discussion of kinds of immunity, and how vaccines are best delivered depending on how disease is transmitted. We compare what was claimed about the shots (they stop transmission!), and what Pfizer later admitted (that they did not know if the shots stopped transmission—but they had to move at the “speed of science”!). Also, a discussion of how to kill your pathogens by crossing ecological borders…and how to get rid of a botfly with a steak, or with ivermectin. Then: why are young male capuchin monkeys abducting baby howler monkeys on an island off the coast of Panama? Finally: a discussion of transhumanism, our future, our embodied selves, how we live on, what we owe our children, what our beloved dead would make of now, and how we, and the LLMs, could know.*****Our sponsors:Brain.fm: intense music that boosts productivity. What happens when we commodify nature? The natural world is not doing well, and is not put here to do with as we want. How can we learn to appreciate nature, and environment, without jumping to conclusions about what is happening, or picking sides in an ideological battle that has nothing to do with actual wild nature? Also: how are DOGE cuts affecting scientists? Four people profiled in Science magazine reveal that some good science is being hit with chaos and uncertainty—but also that a lot of “science” funding that has been cut was suspect, at best.*****Our sponsors:Manukora: the most flavorful, delicious, and nutritious honey you'll ever have. What's in our medicines? There are active ingredients, and there are excipients, which is everything else. From colorants to emulsifiers to adjuvants, excipients hide many horrors, and it's not even possible to know which ones are in your meds (or foods). Dairy that has been fortified with vitamins A & D also has seed oils and emulsifiers, but those things aren't on the label. The government database that should have all the information is full of errors. Polysorbate 80, a common emulsifier in food and drugs, is so complex that it hasn't been fully characterized, and is known to be cytotoxic generally, including being hemolytic—it breaks apart red blood cells. Meanwhile, Moderna's Covid “vax” has even more contaminants than previously recognized.*****Our sponsors:Masa Chips: Delicious chips made with corn, salt, and beef tallow—nothing else—in loads of great flavors. "Here then is my plea to my fellow Americans. Do not take the bait. Do not feel it necessary to come to a conclusion. Do not even feel that it is your job to follow all the news. Many who think that they follow all the news follow only one slant, and so are more misinformed than those who intentionally look away from the entire circus. Try to observe without interpretation, avoid certainty, and as you return to your senses quite literally, remind yourself that what you think you know may not, in fact, be true." The middle ground scramble continues. Elites redefine their positions as if they had it right all along, and explain why they definitely need to be in charge of more stuff. We have been waiting for the reckoning; instead we are getting the anti-reckoning. This week in women: the UK Supreme Court declares that transwomen are not women, and women are lauded for putting on matching jumpsuits and being launched into space for a minute. In Britain, rapists can no longer pretend to be women; in the United States, we are asked to celebrate one of the oldest plays in the book—attractive woman attaches herself to wealthy man and attains power—and pretend that it represents female empowerment, while conveniently forgetting actually skilled women who have come before. Also: a hostage situation in Podcastistan: in which we explore the strange about-face of some prominent free speech warriors. Finally: the amazing institution that is Ralston College, whose themes are truth, freedom of inquiry, beauty, and fellowship.*****Our sponsors:Timeline: Accelerate the clearing of damaged mitochondria to improve strength and endurance: Go to http://www.timeline.com/darkhorse and use code darkhorse for 10% off your first order.ARMRA Colostrum is an ancient bioactive whole food that can strengthen your immune system. Tariffs, Trump, AI, nature, and science. Are the tariffs insane, or brilliant? Will Trump actually bring manufacturing back to the U.S.? How are the “reciprocal tariffs” calculated, what game is everyone playing, and how long will it take to know who wins? Then: AI marches us further into the Cartesian Crisis; can we restore our humanity? Scientific American claims that too much nature is bad for you (it's not), and finally, some words from County Highway, and why we should consider being quiet and listening to Aslan.*****Our sponsors:CrowdHealth: Pay for healthcare with crowdfunding instead of insurance. In this week's episode, we discuss ridiculous op-eds and letters to the editor in Nature this week, and the concept of fairness. First: gender equity for female scientists in war zones, and for women in mining. Are these laudable goals? Also: is division of labor between the sexes inherently objectionable? How does the concept of homeostasis relate to a body being given pharmaceutical interventions, a society being given equity interventions, or a government being given bureaucratic interventions? Then: level playing fields are the sine qua non of the West – they work in science, markets, politics, everything. Internet algorithms in their current state are, in comparison, anti-Western. Using the analogy of a card game, we discuss luck.*****Our sponsors:ARMRA Colostrum is an ancient bioactive whole food that can strengthen your immune system. As we protect existing rights laid out in the Constitution, we also need to innovate new protections in a world with new threats and possibilities. Going back to what was will not be sufficient. Then: Bobby Kennedy Jr. and anti-Semitism; and Columbia University's response to the Trump administration as it tries to hang on to $400 million dollars in annual federal funding. In this week's episode, we discuss the JFK assassination, deportations, DOGE, Tesla, anarchists, flu, measles, vaccines, and crunchy Moms. What do we make of the 80,000 pages of JFK files that were released yesterday? Are immigrants who are in the U.S. legally protected by the Constitution? What are they allowed to say, or think? Does anger at Elon Musk and DOGE explain the left going after Teslas? Or maybe it's not the left at all, but anarchists. What's up with flu this year, and should you get a flu shot? How about a measles vaccine? Did the measles vaccine contribute to the drop in measles deaths in the U.S.? And why are mothers who are concerned for the health and well-being of their children rejecting the advice of experts?*****Our sponsors:Timeline: Accelerate the clearing of damaged mitochondria to improve strength and endurance: Go to http://www.timeline.com/darkhorse and use code darkhorse for 10% off your first order.Helix: Excellent, sleep-enhancing, American-made mattresses. From the Alhambra to street altercations, what can we learn from the places that we go, and how we interact with them? Then: one cannot bring iberico ham into the United States from Spain, the USDA says, “because there are special restrictions.” We suspect the ham lobby. In this week's episode, we discuss antibiotics, Kennedy, mirrors and education—all from Seville, Spain. First up: fluoroquinolones are a class of antibiotics that includes cipro, and are now understood to cause a whole host of serious health problems, from tendon rupture to heart damage to death. Over-reliance on pharmaceutical solutions to human problems is making us sicker. Then: scientists are worried about Kennedy, because he “rejects established science,” like how effective the mRNA shots are against Covid. Also: what is going on with mirrors, and why are people so quick to decide that it's obvious? In this week's episode, we discuss changes in global health from Barcelona, as indicated by how much public coughing is taking place now. This segues into a discussion of cancer, mRNA, trade-offs, and complex systems. Then: what DOGE needs to understand about science, which is not inherently efficient. What are indirect costs on federal grants, why are they necessary, and why do they vary? And: how does having indirect costs create perverse incentives by university administrators to privilege scientists over non-scientists, and Big Science over (regular) science. Specifically, science in the West is failing because fast, expensive empirical science is nearly always favored over slow, cheap, and/or theoretical science. Universities get richer, and Big Scientists get promoted, but grad students don't learn how to be scientists, and we all lose out on having basic scientific questions answered, which will ultimately be our downfall. The core focus of this episode revolves around the intricate dynamics of the instincts, or instinctual biases within the Enneagram framework, specifically addressing the distinctions between the various schools of thought on this subject. We examine the varying perspectives offered by our esteemed teachers, highlighting how these biases or drives can influence behavior and interpersonal relations, while also considering their implications for personal development. As we engage in this multifaceted conversation, we invite listeners to reflect on their own experiences and observations regarding these instinctual drives, as they are essential in shaping our interactions and self-perceptions. Ultimately, we aim to illuminate the complexities and provide clarity on how the instincts can be harnessed for greater self-awareness and growth.Resources:The Narrative Tradition - https://www.narrativeenneagram.org/programs/instincts-subtypes-3/The Enneagram Institute - https://www.enneagraminstitute.com/how-the-enneagram-system-works/#h-the-three-instinctsAwareness to Action - https://awarenesstoaction.com/our-instinctual-biases-three-patterns-of-attention-and-values-and-how-they-shape-the-way-we-work/IEA Pod: Exploring the Instincts & Subtypes pt 1 IEA Pod: Exploring the Instincts & Subtypes pt 2 IEA Pod: Exploring the Instincts & Subtypes pt 3Cognitive Bias Resources - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cognitive_biasLogical Fallacies - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fallacies Science Books“Behave” by Robert Sapolsky“Social Chemistry” by Marissa King7 ½ Lessons About the Brain” by Lisa Feldman Barrett“The Selfish Gene” by Richard Dawkins“Basic Instinct: The Genesis of Behavior” by Mark S. In this week's episode, we discuss the relationship between infectious and chronic disease, and between germ theory and terrain theory of disease. Pathogens are real, and exogenous treatments like antibiotics can kill them. The health of the body is affected by diet, exercise, stress, and the microbiome, all of which can affect how susceptible a person is to getting sick from pathogens. We discuss gastric ulcers, Covid-19, pneumococcal disease, and comorbidities. Also: how do traditional vs modern diets affect the health, dental and otherwise, of people? Why do pre-industrial people not get cavities, or need orthodontia? Why do squirrels fed by humans develop similarly malformed skulls as babies fed modern diets? Finally: do we have a responsibility to point out the carnage that will result as the Trump administration goes after decades of entrenched interests?*****Our sponsors:Caraway: Non-toxic, beautiful, light ceramic cookware. In this week's episode, we discuss the Senate Confirmation Hearings of Bobby Kennedy Jr., in which the Democrats reveal a preference for anecdote over science, and work hard to maintain the status quo. As RFK seeks to Make America Healthy Again, he answers questions about infectious and chronic disease, SSRIs, Covid, farmers, autism, conspiracy theories, Medicaid and Medicare, and says with no equivocation: “I am not afraid of vested interests.” Also: Trump signs an Executive Order that will prevent the chemical and surgical mutilation of children; the new Press Secretary seems positively human; and the CIA admits the likelihood of a laboratory origin of Covid. Then: a summary of Executive Orders: positive (e.g. freedom of speech, reality of biological sex, affirmative action, putting America first, securing our borders, establishing DOGE, J6 pardons, promoting beautiful architecture, and withdrawing from the WHO), negative (Gulf of America, the death penalty), and environmental (off-shore wind and natural gas, ANWR, fish and fires). In this week's episode, we continue our discussion of the Los Angeles Fires, sharing stories, analysis, and an apology from the owner of the LA Times, a publication which endorsed Karen Bass, LA's current mayor. Even if diversity and inclusion have value, we need skill and experience more. Then: a new molecular technique reveals the extent to which mRNA shots move around the body and trigger the immune system to destroy transfected cells; this provides strong support for Bret's years-old hypothesis that myocarditis and pericarditis are the result of T cell mediated destruction of cardiomyocytes. Finally: dung beetles, in life and in art. Why does California burn, how are fires different now than they used to be, what happens now? We discuss the Getty Villa and Palisades Village, and why we should care what happens to a wealthy neighborhood in West LA. Also: did the LA Fire Chief drinking the DEI Kool-Aid contribute to the devastation? And when are natural disasters not entirely natural? Then: Zuckerberg announces changes to fact-checking, filters, and trust and safety teams at Meta. It's not an apology. In this week's episode, we review the past year on DarkHorse, recalling stories about Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (the former president of Harvard, Boeing, Kamala Harris, Secret Service, tortillas); food (seed oils, tallow, and types of fat; the food compass; microbeef sushi; the perfect potato); pharma (vaccines and the CDC, Ozempic, Bovear, sunscreen); the Earth's magnetic field and pole shifts; the WHO; the need for natural history museums; gender ideology (WPATH, pup handlers, the Olympics, Imane Khelif); immigration and the southern border; Julian Assange's release; the First Amendment and the Supreme Court; the election, Rescue the Republic, and Unity; and some cool biology (octopi have old sex chromosomes; fish with “legs” that can taste; an orangutan who heals wounds with leaves; and frogs in saunas). Then: predictable fissures are arising in the MAGA – MAHA – Unity coalition. How should we think about them, and how can we protect MAHA from a battle between food and pharma? In this week's episode, we discuss the World Health Organization, Greenland, Panama, and how Trump plans to interact with all of the above. Is it moral to ask for, buy, or take, other people's land? We need to remember the Monroe Doctrine. Also: the Southern Poverty Law Center puts out an annual hate map, in which they showcase hate groups like “anti-government groups” that promote “conspiratorial and dubious views of government…as evidenced by the movement's popular rhetoric on such issues as COVID-19 regulation.” Also on the SPLC's hate list: people who don't think that drag queen story hours promote literacy. While claiming to challenge “binary gender roles,” trans ideology actually does the opposite. In this 256th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this week's episode, we discuss resistance to Make America Healthy Again, and how beliefs that were once unspeakable become speakable. It used to be impossible to speak about the risks of fluoride in the water; now it's not. It used to be impossible to question the safety of Mercury in vaccines; now it's not. How safe is Aluminum as an adjuvant in vaccines? Goliath assures us it's safe; we look at the research that has been done, and find otherwise. We are betting our lives, and our children's lives, on four rabbits and a dude. We also discuss the polio vaccine, and GLP-1 RAs, more familiarly known as Ozempic and its chemical kin. Similar to the mRNA shots for Covid (wherein Uracil was replaced with Pseudouridine), GLP-1RAs are similar but not identical to a naturally occurring human hormone, but have been altered to be more “stable” and last longer in the body.*****Our sponsors:Pique's Nandaka: delicious mushroom, tea, and chocolate drink that provides all day energy. In this 255th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this week's episode, we discuss how to avoid confusion between moral and analytical differences, especially when it comes to politics and the state of America. Probably you have people in your life whom you love, with whom you disagree adamantly about politics. If you believe those people to share your values, then you probably just disagree about what you have seen, and what it means—rather than believing that they are fundamentally bad people. Also: is it unethical to spend time and resources investigating scientific questions that have already been answered? And: excess deaths in the time of Covid, the pull-forward effect, and an analogy with treefalls during early Winter storms: strong winds cull the weak, such that in subsequent storms, there should be fewer trees that fall. In this 254th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this week's episode, we discuss science, scientists, and the mainstream media. How can the New York Times and The Atlantic simultaneously be so opposed to Kennedy, and so in favor of the industrial sludge being promoted by Big Pharma and Big Food? A new research result finds that women who move for a few seconds every day are less likely to have heart attacks than women who move for no seconds at all. Our standards have sunk very, very low. Science Magazine tells us that American science needs a new vision, but doesn't tell us what that vision should be. In this 253rd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this week's episode, we follow the science to fewer cow farts. Bovear, an FDA approved product that is fed to cattle to reduce their production of methane, is the result of yet more reductionist, metric-heavy research that conflates complex systems with complicated ones. Bill Gates approves, though, so what could go wrong? We discuss ruminant biology, the actual Carbon impact of grazing cattle, and some other great new products from the makers of Bovear, including “the world's first-ever flavor created by artificial intelligence.” Then: why is the BBC's disinformation wing concerned about what Bret said on Diary of a CEO? What happened to journalism? Finally: it's Thanksgiving tomorrow. In this 252nd in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this week's episode, we start with corrections from last livestream, and a bit more about seed oils. Then: dry fasting. What are the cultural and biological precedents for abstaining from all food and drink for hours or days at a time? What religious traditions include dry fasting? Are their health benefits? What are autophagy, and metabolic water, and what do kangaroo rats and camels have to teach us? We tell our personal story of just having done a seven day dry fast, and remind Americans that, as a country, we just voted to Make America Healthy Again. In this 251st in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this week's episode, we discuss how the Harris campaign spent their billion dollar war chest—including on celebrities who appeared to be endorsing her because they believed in her, but were actually getting paid. Also: $26 million was spent for “text message outreach,” any many people donated $10 or $20. It's reverse Robin Hood: stealing from the poor, to give to the rich. Related: how can we stay optimistic about unity, when we are seeing such different things? Finally: the New York Times finds a whole bunch of well-credential “experts” in nutrition to assure us that seed oils are excellent for your health. (They're not.) You have a choice: follow the science, or think scientifically for yourself, and actually be healthy.*****Our sponsors:Policygenius: Save time and money providing a financial safety net for your family. In this 250th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this week's episode, we discuss the election results. The outcome—Trump in office, and both legislative bodies having a Republican majority—has the strong potential to be positive for everyone, and yet so many people are scared or angry. We discuss why, and provide some reasons that letting go of your fear and anger is the right thing to do. Also: what do exit polls reveal about who voted blue vs red? Who are the women who voted for Trump? How can you level up yourself and your understanding of the world? Then: why is the New York Times producing graphics that omit some of its own data, making it appear that the West coast had no shift in voting between 2020 and 2024 (spoiler: a significant majority of counties across the countries moved red this election). Finally: which party had more people who hoped for authoritarian crackdowns just two years ago? And what did the CDC have planned for the dirty and unvaccinated?*****Our sponsors:Caraway: Non-toxic, beautiful, light ceramic cookware—makes a great gift! In this 249th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this week's episode, we discuss the upcoming election, and how important it is to vote. The Democratic Party has created a two-tiered system in the Courts and in federal agencies; they have inverted basic values, including equal protection under the law, the role of families, informed consent, individual sovereignty, and our Constitution; and they have replaced truth-seeking with activism. From wars to the economy to the southern border, there is ample evidence of what the two teams actually stand for. Also: the first case report of trans-myocarditis. In this 248th in a series of live discussions with Bret Weinstein and Heather Heying (both PhDs in Biology), we talk about the state of the world through an evolutionary lens.In this week's episode, we begin and end by geeking out on biology: why there tend to be so many molecules in organisms that humans find useful (see: turmeric and ginger), why you can't be both the fastest and the most agile anything, and new research that finds that some Atlantic fish with leg-like appendages can taste the ground with those “legs.” In between all that: an analysis of American political parties—where they've been, where they are now, and what might happen next. Then: why the ascendant Right needs the traditional liberal left, and a discussion of positive feedback, and why it has become easier to say that you support Trump than it used to be.
