Since the beginning of the second Trump administration, the American Council on Education has been early out of the gate in responding to the federal government's onslaught of funding freezes, executive orders and threats to institutions. In February, ACE along with the Association of American Universities, the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities, and other institutions sued the government over its decision to cap indirect costs at 15 percent for National Institutes of Health grant recipients, which resulted in a permanent nationwide injunction on the plans in April.   Ted Mitchell, president of ACE, joins Sara Custer, editor in chief at Inside Higher Ed, to discuss the nature of the federal government's attacks on higher education and what responsibility the sector has in the public losing trust in our institutions. They talk about how the sector is responding to the situation, including the many open-form letters, and as the former under secretary for the Department of Education in the second Obama administration, Ted shares why he thinks higher ed knows how to play the game of politics and which policy issues he thinks can get bipartisan support—as long as there is a receptive partner on the other side of the table.

Gordon Chang, author of the just-released Plan Red: China's Project to Destroy America and The Coming Collapse of China, joined The Guy Benson Show today to break down the disturbing blackmail campaign facing Chinese international students, who are reportedly being coerced by the CCP to spy in exchange for their families' safety. He explained how the now-shuttered Confucius Institutes enabled this behavior, how Confucius Institutes are being replaced, and why Chinese diplomats involved should be expelled. Chang also weighed in on how countries like Columbia are still engaging with Beijing on Belt and Road initiatives and why he believes China ultimately got the better end of the trade pause. “Who's Cheating?” asks Keith Teare in his weekly summary of tech news. Keith is defending a Columbia University student who was punished for openly used AI in his classes. As Arthur C. Clark famously noted, advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic, and so its use is often viewed as cheating by the old regime. But, as Keith and I agree, the $80,000 annual fees that universities are now charging for an undergraduate education could also be seen as a particularly egregious form of cheating. Especially since that a similar education could mostly be achieved by a $20 monthly OpenAI account. Five Takeaways* AI usage in education is causing institutional resistance, with a Columbia student's expulsion highlighting the tension between traditional learning and new technology adoption.* Universities face an existential crisis as AI makes knowledge more accessible, potentially undermining their expensive business model of gatekeeping talent.* Google's search dominance is threatened as Apple explores AI alternatives and companies like Anthropic develop competitive search APIs.* OpenAI is navigating a complex transition, maintaining non-profit governance while uncapping profit potential, signaling Altman's focus on commercial applications.* The future of AI lies in the application layer, with OpenAI's hiring of Instacart's CEO for applications suggesting a strategy to own the entire AI stack from infrastructure to user interface.Keen On America is a reader-supported publication. In 1927, the Hollywood stars (and spouses), Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks, Jr stood outside their California home, arms raised in fascist salute. The photo's caption, referencing the couple's trip to Rome the previous year, informs fans that the couple “greet guests at their beach camp in true Italian style.” How did “America's sweetheart” and her husband, a swashbuckler on and off screen, both patriots who had promoted Liberty bonds following the United States' entry into World War I, come to normalize something like Italian Fascism in its first decade? How did the Italian-born divo, or star, of Hollywood's silent cinema, Rudolph Valentino come to function as foil and counterpart to Benito Mussolini's, the duce, in public opinion in American culture in the 1920s? Winner of the 2019 award for best book in film/media from the American Association for Italian Studies, The Divo and the Duce: Promoting Film Stardom and the Political Leadership in 1920s America (University of California Press, 2019) tells the story of the relationship between celebrity culture, charismatic leadership and national sovereignty as it plays out on both sides of the Atlantic from roughly 1917 to the end of 1933. Giorgio Bertellini asks how two racially othered foreigners, Valentino and Mussolini, became leading figures in America and how these two icons of chauvinist Latin masculinity became public opinion leaders in a nation undergoing a major democratic expansion in terms of gender, equality, social mobility, and political representation. In the post-WWI American climate of nativism, isolationism, consumerism, and the democratic expansion of civic rights and women's suffrage, the divo and the duce became surprising paragons of both authoritarian male power as well as mass appeal. Bringing together star studies, screen studies, political science, Italian Studies, and American Studies Bertellini's study teaches us to think in new ways about cinema, political authority, masculinity, and race in Italian cinema and beyond. Meticulously archived, the author pays especial attention to the mediators between screens and the polity, a vast cast of players including journalists, photographers, ambassadors and other functionaries of state, advertisers, sponsors, and publicity agents, all of whom, on concert, work to promote the “ballyhoo” of the day. In this latest episode I was joined by LPGA Tour card holder and the 2023 LPGA Tour Longest Driver Polly Mack who was in the midst of preparing for the upcoming LPGA Tour tournament at JM Eagle LA Championship at new course El Caballero! Polly is from Berlin, Germany & went to 2 American Universities at both University of Nevada and University of Alabama where with the latter Polly would win NCAA Franklin Regional to participate in NCAA Division 1 Women's Championship and was also named both 2018 Mountain West Player of the Year and 2018 Mountain West Freshman of the Year. During her Amateur career she also represented Germany on 3 occasions at European Amateur Ladies' Team Championship. Polly would turn pro in June 2022 and would gain starts on Epson Tour where she made 8 out of 11 cuts before finishing T15th at LPGA Final Q School at the end of 2022 to gain an LPGA Tour card for 2023 where she also held LET status starting off 2023 with a T13th at Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco before also playing her first ever major championship at Chevron Championship at Carlton Woods in Texas, an experience that Polly certainly loves to talk about. Polly would keep her status on LPGA for 2024 and would start off slow before a respectable T21st at Ford Championship in Arizona would occur before playing 2 Majors at Chevron & KPMG PGA Championship at Sahalee CC. In the summer Polly would have a good run of T39th at CPKC Women's Open in Canada, a career best T5th at Portland Classic  and T14th at Kroger Queen City Championship which would help elevate her to 72nd in last year CME standings.  We learn about Polly's detour when travelling to Australia after finding out last minute that she was in the field for Blue Bay LPGA in China having to literally go through passport control then to go back out again in the other direction, the life of a professional Golfer right there folks.. As always I hope you enjoy and be sure to download, subscribe and like via Podbean, Spotify & Apple. Please also be sure to leave a 5 star rate and review as we keep improving. Wars—like the one between Israel and Hamas—are not only fought on the battlefield, but they are also fought through stories. In today's episode, I interview Eman Abdelhadi, an American academic, activist, and organizer in the Free Palestine movement. Abdelhadi shares a perspective on Israel that, while controversial, is gaining influence across the United States, particularly on college campuses. A recent Pew survey revealed that 34% of Americans under 30 find Hamas' reasons for fighting Israel to be valid, and only 16% of Americans support continued U.S. military aid to Israel. If you align with the Free Palestine movement, Eman's story may resonate deeply. If you support Israel, it may be challenging and even frustrating to hear. But regardless of where you stand, I believe there is value in listening to a view that is shaping more and more of the American discourse on this issue. We discuss the alarming attacks that students are facing at the hands of professors and others who support Israel's genocide. Universities have even gone so far as to suspend leading student groups, like Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP), organizing against Israel's genocide in Gaza. Yet, students across the U.S. and the world have remained defiant and steadfast in their demands against their universities' complicity with Israel's genocide. What's driving the anti-Israel protests storming college campuses all across America? Schools like Columbia University, UCLA, Emory, Harvard, and Yale have been hit with massive pro-Palestinian mobs that have led to hundreds of arrests and violent threats against the Jewish student populations. Why are these angry (yet seemingly sophisticated) mobs targeting college campuses and how have they successfully managed to recruit students to join in the madness even at the threat of expulsion? In this midweek podcast, John guides us through a conversation investigating the ongoing anti-Israel protests as he also breaks down the geopolitical, historical, theological, and prophetic backdrop. He'll also provide an update as to how the U.S. government is responding to these hostile demonstrations in real time and expose the true heart and motivation behind them. During the episode, John will answer questions like: What sparked this string of protests and what demands are being made? What would be the implications of a ceasefire from Israel? Why is a two-state solution impossible? How legitimate is the "Free Palestine" cause? What makes Israel a political barometer in the Middle East? If Hamas managed to defeat Israel, how would the U.S. be impacted? Why do many Muslims and citizens of Gaza support the flourishing of Israel? As you learn about the context surrounding the protests and the Israel-Hamas conflict, it'll become more and more apparent why Christian apologists should have a vested interest in the nation of Israel. Take a listen as John reveals how politics is playing a major role in the recent rise of antisemitism on college campuses in the U.S. and explores how the Islamic worldview continues to fuel hostility between Jews and Arabs in the Middle East. And please continue to pray for the safety of Israel and a peaceable end to this ongoing war. To view the entire VIDEO PODCAST be sure to join our CrossExamined private community. //The Wire//1700Z April 26, 2024////ROUTINE////BLUF: WHITE HOUSE CREATES FEDERALLY DIRECTED CLIMATE ACTIVIST ORGANIZATION, ANNOUNCES NEW TAXES FOR NEXT YEAR'S BUDGET.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------HomeFront-USA: Encampment demonstrations and general unrest continues at approximately 40 American Universities and Ivy League institutions. Large scale arrests have frequently been observed, along with a generally overwhelming police presence.Washington D.C. – The White House has proposed nearly doubling capital gains tax to 44.6% as part of the next federal omnibus budget bill. This proposal also includes a 25% tax on unrealized capital gains.Yesterday the White House also announced the implementation of the American Climate Corps, a first-of-its-kind federally-run activism organization. As per the announcement by the White House, no experience is required, and over 2,000 paid positions are available around the United States. This program will also provide a “streamlined pathway into federal service, either immediately upon completion of a single term, or through completion of multiple terms of service”. Applicants will be embedded within various federal agencies (for indoctrination purposes) as part of the training pipeline, and upon completion of the training schedule, will be deployed to various strategic locations around the United States. Agents will specifically be deployed to rural areas and communities, with the goal of mobilizing locals and developing local activist networks.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: At face value, the ACC seems like a “young leaders” program centered around the climate agenda, all financed by taxpayers and directed by the White House. As “education” and “mobilization” is part of the program, the historical implications begin to become more obvious, and vastly more concerning.Throughout history, similar organizations have been used to further blur the line between federal activities and the private sector, in addition to offering the convenience of plausible deniability. As such, similar organizations have been a crucial stepping-stone in the mobilization and turning of social groups, into more official and organized federally-directed paramilitary organizations. As almost all climate activist groups in the United States resort to violence at the first opportunity, the implication of such a program is quite clear. Implementing this program will almost certainly result in an increase in the efficiency of climate groups within the United States from the perspective of direct federal guidance, granting the White House full command and control over at least 2,000 re-educated, well paid, and ideologically-fanatical private citizens known to use violence to achieve their goals…all emplaced in strategic cities around the country, embedded with local politicians, and running intelligence networks of their own, serving as the eyes and ears on the ground for the White House….all of which is funded openly by taxpayers.Furthermore, the announcement of raising taxes while establishing a federally directed, taxpayer-funded climate militia during the lead up to an election is generally not advised among political systems seeking to legitimately engage in the electoral process. As such, this is likely not a concern for the White House at this time.Analyst: S2A1//END REPORT//
