(Jul 15, 2024) Great Camp Santanoni is introducing electric scooters and wheelchairs to make it more accessible, but some advocates say, it's not enough; as the North Country gets warmer and wetter, one North Country art gallery is dealing with mold in its archives; a central New York church where abolitionist Harriet Tubman spent much of her later life, and where she's interred, has undergone a major renovation; and, a Canton native teaches us the ropes of sailing on Cranberry Lake.

(Feb 1, 2024) New York could close up to five state prisons this year. The head of the State department of corrections says a big reason is the lack of staff; Democrats in the Senate approved a plan to work directly with drug manufacturers to make cheaper, generic versions of key drugs, like insulin; we meet a couple in Cranberry Lake who makes wooden duck decoys; an elementary school in Watertown recently unveiled a second vending machine that dispenses books. The goal: inspire a love for reading.
(Feb 1, 2024) Some people can't wait to retire. But others find their thing, something they never want to stop. We meet a duck decoy craftsman in Cranberry Lake. Also: A Canton mom is lobbying in Washington, DC to force tech companies to better protect teenagers from predation and addiction on social media.

The tiny town of Cranberry Lake in the Adirondacks held their 5th annual art show and auction last weekend. The show has become a local sensation and a point of pride and fun for area residents. Moses Nagel attended and filed a report.
In this two-part episode I start off by talking about the worst hiking injury I've ever experienced, which happened recently while backpacking the Cranberry Lake 50 in the Adirondacks. I talk about what went wrong, what we can do to learn from it... and how much it sucked. Here's a link to the video of my hike: https://youtu.be/ggwHwgPtF7w In part 2, the wonderful Trail Tales editor and thru hiker Rose "Comics" Turner is back for a conversation about her experience as an Appalachian Trail shuttle driver, as well as some (rare) sketchy characters that have been on the AT this year. (May 21, 2020) Spring has come so slowly in the North Country this year. But it seems to be here finally (knock on wood). The wildflowers are out on Bear Mountain overlooked Cranberry Lake in the northern Adirondacks. Also: no in-person summer school this year.
(May 21, 2020) The Adirondacks are showing hopeful signs of spring, even summer these last few days. The air is warming up, the wildflowers are blooming and the birds are back in action. Emily Russell and Monica Sandreczki hiked up Bear Mountain overlooking Cranberry Lake in the northern Adirondacks. The two drove separately to the trailhead and kept a safe distance between them during their hike.

ESF students talk about their research and field work at Cranberry Lake Biological Station.
Aesthetically, the Station has few peers. The combination of a sunset over Cranberry Lake and the call of loons is an unforgettable experience. The station hosts both an academic summer program and a number of independent research projects by teaching and non-teaching scientists. Our mission is to provide undergraduate and graduate students with exceptional field experience in biology. CLBS is located in the Great Adirondack region of New York State. The station is surrounded by remote forests classified as Wild Forest or Wilderness by the Adirondack Park Agency. The station is isolated by the absence of roads, and can only be accessed by boat. The isolation adds to the experience of the great Wilderness adventure, and makes it easier to leave markers and equipment unattended.
