In this episode of “The Valley Today,” host Janet Michael welcomed Jordan Herring, the city of Winchester's Arborist and Grounds Maintenance Manager, for an in-depth conversation about the upcoming Native Plant Festival and the broader mission of cultivating a greener, more sustainable city. As the driving force behind the city's lush parks, vibrant medians, and tree-lined streets, Herring offered listeners a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges and rewards of urban forestry. The discussion began with a nod to the often-overlooked labor that keeps Winchester's public spaces beautiful. Herring, who manages a team of 25 to 30 employees and coordinates with contractors, described the year-round hustle of maintaining 16 parks and thousands of street trees. His dual role as arborist and grounds manager means he's responsible not only for the health of Winchester's urban canopy but also for the careful selection of tree species—ensuring the “right tree right place” to avoid future issues with power lines, soil compaction, and invasive species. A significant portion of the conversation focused on the importance of native plants. Herring explained how native species support local pollinators like bees and butterflies, maintain biodiversity, and require less maintenance than non-native or invasive alternatives. The festival, set for October 4th at Jim Barnett Park, aims to educate the public on these benefits. Attendees can expect to find native plant nurseries, environmental nonprofits, and government agencies offering resources, free tree saplings, and expert advice. The event is designed to be family-friendly, with activities for children and opportunities to explore the park's new wildflower meadow—a project spearheaded by the late sustainability advocate Sari Carp. Janet and Jordan also addressed the pitfalls of popular but problematic trees like the Bradford Pear, which, despite their initial beauty, pose risks due to weak branching and invasive tendencies. Herring emphasized the city's commitment to replacing such species with more suitable, native alternatives and highlighted Winchester's designations as both a Tree City USA and a Bee City USA—testaments to its ongoing investment in urban ecology. The conversation wrapped up with practical advice for homeowners: do a little research before planting, consider the needs of pollinators, and take advantage of the wealth of local resources, from the Virginia Department of Forestry to the city's own Parks and Recreation Department. The Native Plant Festival, with its free admission and welcoming atmosphere, stands as a celebration of community, education, and the shared responsibility of nurturing the natural world right in our own backyards.

These programs directly support wildfire prevention, volunteer fire departments, reforestation, community forestry, forest health, and rural economic resilience. Their elimination would leave Nebraska communities without the resources, tools, and partnerships needed to protect lives, property, and the environment. These programs provide funding for various community forestry activities, including: NFS technical assistance to help communities make informed decisions, such as tree inventories, inventory software access, evaluation of at-risk trees, arborist training, municipal staff training, tree board assistance, ordinance drafting, forest management support, and much more. Support for programs like Tree City USA, Tree Care workshops, and events. Arborist support includes low-cost or free CEU trainings and arborist prep. Forest health diagnostics and monitoring. Dylan Daisuke Loy Saito is from Portland, OR & Vancouver, WA and is a PNW-ISA Member (former Editor-in-chief), ISA Certified Arborist & TRAQ qualified, an ODA Public Pesticide Applicator , FEMA Incident Commander, ODOT Traffic Controller, and holds the Adult Mental Health Aid Certification.Dylan was born and raised on a volcano in the Pacific Ocean. It taught him to connect with the planet and forced symbiosis with nature. It was this life experience where he learned the gift of ALOHA, and still shares and practices this everyday. After migrating to Oregon in 96', it became obvious he landed on a much bigger island than he grew up on, with more forests, wildlife, and people. It was here Dylan found his calling to share his love of nature with everyone through Arboriculture. He worked with a local tree company as a "branch manager", and literally learned the ropes of aerial access in trees. 10 years went by, worked with several premium tree care providers, career volunteer with multiple green industry nonprofits, and became a municipal Arborist with the City of Portland. It was in this role he utilized all his career experiences to reach an entire city of tree-centric communities! Dylan spent years volunteering with the PNW-ISA regional chapter as a judge for the regional climbing competitions, as the Editor of the Chapter publication, speaker and presenter at multiple Annual conferences, and co-founder of the PNW Tree Failure Database with Chris Rippey and Jonathan Pywell. Dylan has now been in the industry for over 20 years, and still sharing the ALOHA he was gifted long ago. He enjoys spending time with his son Ronin and daughter Hana, and teaching them the same connection with our planet. _______________________________________________________________________Patreon: http://patreon.com/TheMunicipalArboristInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/the_municipal_arborist/Questions or comments?themunicipalarborist@gmail.comThank you to our sponsors:Davey Resource GroupArbsessionWinkler Tree & Lawn Care

Today I have the BEST guest on the show... my husband! He's an Enneagram type 9 and a tree climbing, chainsaw swinging arborist, thus the topic of trees and how we can tie the Enneagram into that topic. Are you ready to have the curtain peeled back a little on our marriage and get a sneak peek into our marriage dynamics? I can wholeheartedly say this one was also a fun one to record as we get a little silly and tie the Enneagram into trees! But rest assured we do also have lots of serious things to say in this episode about powerful analogies you can learn from trees that relate to our personal walks with the Lord. Enjoy!Past episodes with Spencer: Part 1 with our familyPart 2 with our familyThe Money EpisodeRESOURCES FOR YOU:Wholehearted Enneagram Coachinghttps://bit.ly/SWcoachingcollectiveEnnea-what?
