I was so looking forward to talking with Susan Poizner - I've heard so many times that the first thing you should do on a homestead is plant perennial fruits, so I wanted to make sure we/I know the best practices, And Susan's story about learning about fruit tree care is so incredible. Susan planted fruit trees in her city park in an empty space, only to hear from some community people that they didn't want it. She did it anyway, and created this beautiful community of education, appreciation and care for the earth - EVEN from her naysayers! The orchard transformed the park - it brought in visitors and beneficial insects and birds. She learned so much about fruit trees, and she wants to help others learn from her experience. She is an Arborist, but she says Arborists aren't taught about fruit trees, and that matters.Susan hosts a podcast, also called Orchard People, and has written 5 books (links to both are below). She is a wealth of knowledge - she is very much a WHY person, and a data person, and is so generous with her time. "Growing fruit trees is a partnership between you and the tree - when you give it the hands on care it needs, it will reward you for years to come." That's why it's recommended to start with fruit in homesteading. A little bit of the right care, and you'll have all the fruit you could ever need. She suggest doing some research in the beginning to make sure the trees you choose will grow well in your planting zone - set yourself up for success. You can check out Orchard Peoples' website: https://orchardpeople.com/Susan's podcast is here: https://podcast.orchardpeople.com/Susan's books are available here: https://learn.orchardpeople.com/books?_gl=1*972vh3*_ga*MjExNjAxNjg4MS4xNzc2MTI2NjQ1*_ga_BFBJFLTXPT*czE3NzYxMjg2NzkkbzIkZzAkdDE3NzYxMjg2NzkkajYwJGwwJGgwSend me a message!Support the showLike this episode? Protecting Old Growth Forests with guest Nathan Cornell, Co-founder and President, Old Growth Tree Society Old growth forests have been disappearing at an alarming rate around the world due to clear-cutting. These undisturbed natural forests host rare ecosystems of native plant and animal diversity. Old growth forests store more carbon than younger forests and other landscapes. They are more resistant to wildfire, prevent flooding, and have an extensive underground mycorrhizal network that makes them more resilient to pests and disease. Nathan Cornell is the Co-founder and President of the Old Growth Tree Society. He learned to identify Old Growth forests from arborist and Old Growth Forest expert Matthew Largess, who studied under Dr. Bruce Kershner, a renowned old growth forest authority. Since 2020, Cornell has been a leading voice calling for protection of Rhode Island's remaining Old Growth forests and rare ecosystems. After realizing no other state environmental group was trying to protect forests and biodiversity on public land, Cornell co-founded the organization with ecologist Rick Enser. The OGTS aims to pass legislation to preserve Rhode Island's natural landscape. In addition to his forest advocacy work, Cornell served a term on the Warwick School Committee as the youngest person elected to a public office in Warwick's history. Note: Four days after this interview, the proposed legislation 2026 – H 7914 was heard by the House Environment and Natural Resources Committee. Seventy-six people submitted written testimony supporting the bill – more than any other RI environmental bill so far this year. People and groups testifying in support included an ISA-credentialed Arborist, an Ecologist, Defenders of Animals, Volunteer Services for Animals, the Rhode Island Nursery and Landscape Association, the Tiverton Land Trust, the North Smithfield Land Trust, the Pawtuxet River Authority, Restore The Northwoods, and the Old Growth Forest Network. We challenged Deric to keep up an Irish accent for the whole show, he didn't even last three seconds. We kick things off with a reality check on the recent windstorms that turned our backyards into obstacle courses and honest landscapers into price gouging armies. Zac gets brutally honest about his latest project: XPS foam panel speakers. After being bought into the YouTube hype, he discovered that without a subwoofer and a $200 microphone, they sound less like high-fidelity audio and more like a musical birthday card.Meanwhile, Deric shares how he turned Gemini AI into a high-functioning shop assistant by uploading photos of burnt-out capacitors. Fixing a "dead" motor for 13 bucks and balancing water chemistry without the usual guesswork. In this episode, we also discuss:The Arborist "Opportunity": Why a split branch in the neighborhood suddenly costs $2,500 when demand is high. The Honda Fit "Clunk": Why Eric decided to "lube the bejesus" out of a strut mount bearing rather than spend $1,000 on a 16-year-old car.Dealerships vs. Online Buyers: Why online services often offer more for your trade-in than the local dealer ever will.Woodshop Cat: Deric's solution for a cat that decided the house rugs are its new litter box.Got questions? What are you doing, and what can you do, to help God's kingdom grow?Have you ever felt the pressure to "make" things happen in your spiritual life or your ministry? In this third installment of our Colossians 1 study, we look at the beautiful economy of spiritual growth. Using the analogy of a leaning tree in a backyard, we explore our role as "co-workers" with God. We dive into the "Word of Truth"—the Gospel—and discover that its power doesn't depend on our perfection or professional training. Just like Epaphras, an ordinary guy who changed his community by simply sharing what he heard, we are all called to be "preachers" in our own mission fields. Key Takeaways:The Role of the Arborist: Why we are called to plant and water, but must leave the growth to God. The Gospel Defined: A clear look at the "Good News"—that Jesus lived, died, and rose again to make us right with God. Ordinary People, Extraordinary Message: How "unschooled" fishermen and ordinary servants like Epaphras became the catalysts for the Gospel flourishing. Your Daily Mission Field: Identifying the "captive audiences" in your workplace, school, and home that are waiting for a message of hope. Scripture: Colossians 1:3-9, 1 Corinthians 3:3-9, Matthew 24:14

Amsterdam's trees haven't “stopped growing” — they've stopped growing the way they should. Arborist-turned-CEO Jan Willem de Groot explains why maturity matters more than planting counts, why crown volume is the metric that actually reflects ecological function, and what happens when cities focus on keeping the trees they already rely on.We explore why large trees provide exponentially more shade, cooling, habitat, and carbon storage than saplings; how risk-averse maintenance has erased vital hollows and “imperfections” that wildlife depends on; and why the real frontier of the urban forest is private land, where most canopy sits and most removals happen. Jan Willem shares how Terra Nostra and greehill are using LiDAR-based smart inventories to create accurate, city-wide digital twins — not to replace arborists, but to free them to focus where their expertise matters most.We also talk about Ukraine's lanes of heroes — memorial trees that carry names, grief, and continuity — and what they teach us about trees as living memory, not just infrastructure. Technology can help us see what is worth keeping. But meaning is what keeps it standing.
Alec Hall is an Arborist with Davey Tree in St Louis West, he joins Michael Calhoun with tips for your trees and yards as winter approaches. He says winter is a good time for structural pruning since they don't have leaves.
US master arborist Basil Camu has made a daring business move - refusing to cut down trees.
Recorded in the heart of Tilburg—a Dutch city that has transformed from one of Europe's hottest urban heat islands into a showcase of regreening—this episode explores the hidden worlds that decide whether city trees live or die. Arborist and Senior Advisor Erwin van Herwijnen of New Urban Standard joins the Internet of Nature Podcast to talk about why soils matter more than species, and how climate-adaptive growing places can turn trees into the new sewer system. We discuss why most city trees never make it past adolescence, why climate-ready trees won't save us without climate-ready soils, and how stormwater makes or breaks survival. Erwin explains why tree professionals can't afford to be “softies,” why spreadsheets might be the Lorax's greatest ally, and how making civil engineers happy is the secret to long-lived urban forests.Plus: the tragedy of cutting down trees before they reach maturity, what it takes to plant for 80 years instead of election cycles, and why, for Erwin, the city only truly comes alive when its people can sit in the shade of a tree.
When it comes to most plants in our yards, we can probably handle most of the maintenance ourselves with a little guidance. The big exception: our trees, which have needs that might require someone with a bit more knowhow, aka an arborist. In this episode, Don and John welcome guest Quincey Circo of Carr's Tree Service to talk about when and why you might need to bring in a pro to help with tree maintenance. You can learn more about Carr's Tree Service at https://www.carrstreeservice.com/

In this episode of “The Valley Today,” host Janet Michael welcomed Jordan Herring, the city of Winchester's Arborist and Grounds Maintenance Manager, for an in-depth conversation about the upcoming Native Plant Festival and the broader mission of cultivating a greener, more sustainable city. As the driving force behind the city's lush parks, vibrant medians, and tree-lined streets, Herring offered listeners a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges and rewards of urban forestry. The discussion began with a nod to the often-overlooked labor that keeps Winchester's public spaces beautiful. Herring, who manages a team of 25 to 30 employees and coordinates with contractors, described the year-round hustle of maintaining 16 parks and thousands of street trees. His dual role as arborist and grounds manager means he's responsible not only for the health of Winchester's urban canopy but also for the careful selection of tree species—ensuring the “right tree right place” to avoid future issues with power lines, soil compaction, and invasive species. A significant portion of the conversation focused on the importance of native plants. Herring explained how native species support local pollinators like bees and butterflies, maintain biodiversity, and require less maintenance than non-native or invasive alternatives. The festival, set for October 4th at Jim Barnett Park, aims to educate the public on these benefits. Attendees can expect to find native plant nurseries, environmental nonprofits, and government agencies offering resources, free tree saplings, and expert advice. The event is designed to be family-friendly, with activities for children and opportunities to explore the park's new wildflower meadow—a project spearheaded by the late sustainability advocate Sari Carp. Janet and Jordan also addressed the pitfalls of popular but problematic trees like the Bradford Pear, which, despite their initial beauty, pose risks due to weak branching and invasive tendencies. Herring emphasized the city's commitment to replacing such species with more suitable, native alternatives and highlighted Winchester's designations as both a Tree City USA and a Bee City USA—testaments to its ongoing investment in urban ecology. The conversation wrapped up with practical advice for homeowners: do a little research before planting, consider the needs of pollinators, and take advantage of the wealth of local resources, from the Virginia Department of Forestry to the city's own Parks and Recreation Department. The Native Plant Festival, with its free admission and welcoming atmosphere, stands as a celebration of community, education, and the shared responsibility of nurturing the natural world right in our own backyards.

Sam Finco, trainer with The Academy, shares his journey from art school to arborist. Growing up between Wisconsin and Iowa, Sam found early inspiration in the outdoors. After dabbling in art and rock climbing, a photo of a crane removal changed everything—he dropped out of forestry school and dove headfirst into tree work. From learning to drive a 26K lb bucket truck in the desert to building rope systems to preserve massive oaks, Sam's story is one of grit, creativity, and growth. Now a contract climber and mentor, he's on a mission to be the guide he never had.

Join us as Andrew Conboy, an ISA certified arborist famously known as Andrew the Arborist, captivates us with his journey through urban forestry and ecological restoration. Andrew's passion for integrating native flora into cityscapes shines as he addresses the challenges of urban stressors like soil compaction and pollution. Explore how underutilized species such as swamp white oak and post oak offer hope for climate adaptation in urban areas. From historical anecdotes about the resilience of honey locusts to the intriguing notion of urban foraging, Andrew sheds light on the potential of trees to transform our cities. The heart of the episode beats with Andrew's insights on community-based environmental stewardship. Discover how the seeds of Colonial Canopy Trees were planted, nurturing a grassroots initiative to tackle invasive species and promote native tree planting. Andrew shares the power of starting small and the joy of building community connections, highlighting stories where volunteers bridge generational and cultural divides. His experiences illustrate that meaningful environmental change starts with local action and collaboration, with each tree planted and invasive weed pulled embodying a step toward a healthier ecosystem. This episode also ventures into the digital realm, where Andrew discusses the impact of long-form video content in raising awareness about native plants and urban forestry. Reflecting on his transition from a gaming content creator to an ecological educator, Andrew emphasizes the role of storytelling in engaging communities. As the conversation unfolds, listeners are invited to participate in environmental restoration efforts, understanding that the fusion of personal narratives and ecological action can truly reshape our urban landscapes.
