On this BONUS EPISODE, Feliks Banel's guest is Lewis County Commissioner Scott Brummer with the latest on the sale of Claquato Church, southwest of Chehalis, Washington. The 1858 Claquato Church in Lewis County, Washington declared surplus in July by Lewis County and put up for sealed bid auction. This took the community by surprise, until it was revealed that Lewis County had been in discussions about the future of the church with the nearby Claquato Cemetery. One bid was received last week by the July 31, 2025 deadline. The bidder is Claquato Cemetery, as was expected by many. Lewis County Commissioner Scott Brummer spoke with CASCADE OF HISTORY late Monday, August 4, 2025 to share the specifics of the bid – including the amount the Claquato Cemetery offered for the sale, and the promises made in the proposal to restore and maintain the Claquato Church. Preserving the historic structure is required by the buyer in a covenant attached to the property by Lewis County. Commissioner Brummer also addresses questions about the transparency of the process, and about perceptions of an unfair tilt toward the Claquato Cemetery's proposal – since they had months of additional time to prepare a proposal that other potential bidders did not have. It's time for one more BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY devoted to the Claquato Church in Lewis County, Washington. On this episode, Feliks Banel speaks once again with Lewis County Commissioner Lindsey Pollock about the process to find a buyer, via sealed bid auction, for Claquato Church - a process which Lewis County now all but admits is tilted toward the private, non-profit Claquato Cemetery. The cemetery has had months (or perhaps even years) to ready a proposal, while other potential buyers only learned of the opportunity on Tuesday, July 15, 2025 and have until July 31, 2025 to prepare and submit something. At one point in this interview, Feliks Banel says to Commissioner Pollock, "It seems like that opportunity [of bidding on Claquato Church] should have been offered to everybody in the same time frame, with the same amount of time to prepare a decent proposal." To this statement, Commissioner Pollock responds: "I would agree with that." Lewis County newspaper The Chronicle, whose Brian Mittge broke the news of Claquato Cemetery's involvement in the behind-the-scenes process in a social media post on Wednesday, published a detailed piece on the paper's website Friday, July 18, 2025: LINK: https://www.chronline.com/stories/a-plan-to-restore-historic-claquato-church,384204 CASCADE OF HISTORY is broadcast LIVE most Sunday nights at 8pm Pacific Time via SPACE 101.1 FM in Seattle and gallantly streams everywhere via space101fm.org. This is YET ANOTHER BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY devoted to the Claquato Church in Lewis County, Washington. As mentioned in the short episode posted earlier today, it now appears that Lewis County intended all along for the private, non-profit Claquato Cemetery to bid on and then purchase the Claquato Church through the auction process now underway. On this episode, we speak with Brett Mitchell, chair of the board of the Claquato Cemetery about their interest in the church, and their participation for the past few years in discussions about it with Lewis County. These discussions and negotiations were not revealed to the public in this past Tuesday's Lewis County Board of Commissioners meeting. We then speak with land use attorney David Bricklin, who took a look at the covenant Lewis County prepared for whoever buys the church; Mr. Bricklin points out some potential weaknesses that could endanger the historic aspects of the church in the future. Both of these interviews were recorded on Thursday, July 17, 2025. CASCADE OF HISTORY reached out to Lewis County Commissioner Lindsey Pollock earlier on Thursday to follow up on yesterday's conversation, but we have not yet heard back. BONUS EPISODE: Why the Opaque Process to sell Claquato Church to Claquato Cemetery?

COLUMBIA Conversations

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 17, 2025 4:37

On this BONUS EPISODE of "AS THE CLAQUATO CHURCH TURNS," the rapid-fire developments in Lewis County, WA just keep-a-comin'!! It turns out that Lewis County was secretly working with the private, non-profit Claquato Cemetery to transfer the Claquato Church to their ownership (the cemetery is just down the road from the church) by way of a public auction. Why, exactly, Lewis County Board of Commissioners had to be so secretive is unclear - but it appears that Lewis County declared Claquato Church surplus and put it on the market in hopes that ONLY Claquato Cemetery will bid on it. They also gave themselves the option of being able to choose the "highest and BEST" bid - probably just in case somebody with financial resources wanted to overbid to secure the property. When I interviewed Lewis County Commissioner Lindsey Pollock on July 16, 2025, there was no mention of Claquato Cemetery as the likely buyer, and no mention of the behind-the-scenes negotiating that led to all the confusion and which upset community members this past week. In this episode, we read aloud a Facebook comment also from July 16, 2025 made on a post about the Claquato Church on the Lewis County History Museum's page; the comment is from Brian Mittge of The Chronicle - the newspaper in Centralia/Chehalis - who has an article all about this coming out on Saturday, July 19, 2025. CASCADE OF HISTORY has reached out to Mr. Mitchell of the Claquato Cemetery Board to ask for his version of how this all unfolded - and we've also reached out to Commissioner Pollock for her comments as well. Backroom, secretive stuff is never a good thing for local governments, but if it results in the preservation of Claquato Church, is that a good thing? That's the big philosophical question! On this BONUS EPISODE of CASCADE OF HISTORY, Feliks Banel digs deeper into the controversy brewing in Lewis County, WA where a decision by the Board of County Commissioners - with little or no public input to sell a historic building with a two-week bidding process - has caught many residents off guard, and upset some who care about history and historic preservation. The Claquato Church in Lewis County, Washington was built in 1858 and is one of the oldest structures in the Evergreen State. Lewis County Commissioners approved a plan on July 15, 2025 to auction it off as surplus property; the deadline for bids is July 31, 2025. Criteria for the winning bid is described as "highest and best" - as far as who can guarantee preservation of the building - but the process and the way it's described in official documents strikes some as a little unclear. In this episode, we hear public comment from the Board of Commissioners meeting of July 15, 2025 when the plan was adopted; we speak with Lewis County Commissioner Lindsey Pollock in an interview from July 16, 2025; and another interview from later the same day with descendant of the original church builder, Marla LeFevre. Last week, we were looking into a case from Lewis County, Washington, involving Bigfoot and a UFO, and we came upon Flying Saucer News, published by James S. Rigberg, who ran the Flying Saucer News Bookstore (and Prosperity Clinic) at 359 West 45th Street in Manhattan. The story we were looking at was covered in the May 1972 issue (page 5 of the pdf) of the magazine. Also in that issue was an editorial by Rigberg suggesting that a solution to the crime wave affecting New York City at the time would be to put habitual criminals in suspended animation using cryonics until effective methods of rehabilitation were available. The back of the cover is devoted to a plea for funds to help promote this idea. This week, we'll look into the history (how could we not) of Rigberg, his store, and Flying Saucer News. Read more →Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/podcast-ufo--5922140/support.

Chehalis, the county seat of Lewis County in Washington State, is a city that celebrates both UFOs and Bigfoot. For the 75th anniversary of Kenneth Arnold's sighting over Mt. Rainier (120 miles east) on June 24, 1947, Arnold's granddaughter, Shanelle Shanz, was among a group of speakers at the Chehalis City Farm during the annual “Flying Saucer Party,” which includes exhibits at and benefits the Lewis County Historical Museum. An event centered around Bigfoot, “Bigfoot: Real or Hoax?” was held on April 15, 2023, at Mcfiler's Chehalis Theatre with presentations sponsored by the Historical Museum. Even before people started calling large, cryptic, woods-dwelling, hairy humanoids “Bigfoot,” there was an early report of “Sasquatch” terrorizing residents of the Chehalis Reservation (22 miles northwest of the city) in the March 2, 1934, edition of The Province from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. With such deep roots in UFOs and Bigfoot, it's fitting that there should be a case in the area involving both. Read more →Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/podcast-ufo--5922140/support.

While surveying the area, they made a startling discovery; two sets of human remains. The remains, which turned out to be those of two young women, could not be identified at the time and were named Bones 16 and Bones 17. For investigators, it became clear that the remains were quite possibly victims of The Green River Killer who was responsible for the murders of potentially dozens of sex workers in the Seattle area.  Eventually, The Green River Killer was caught and identified as Gary Ridgway, and though he was more than willing to talk about his crimes with investigators, he couldn't ID all of his victims, so for years some of them remained un-named; including the victim referred to as 'Bones 17'. Eventually genealogy would reveal that Bones 17 was actually Lori Anne Razpotnik; who had run away from home as a teenager in Lewis County, Washington in 1982. Lori had called home over the Thanksgiving holiday to tell her family she was okay and living in Seattle, but they never heard from her again, and were left to wonder what happened to her. Sadly, she crossed paths with Gary Ridgway. After nearly four decades, 'Bones 17' has her name back; it's Lori Anne Razpotnik, and this is her story.  To listen to every episode of DNA: ID ad-free and get other benefits, simply  visit our channel page on Apple Podcasts to get started with an AbJack Insider subscription.
