Dean Edge hails from Rimbey, Alberta, Canada. Edge became only the third Canadian to win the World Livestock Auctioneer Champion contest, which debuted in 1963. Edge made a trip to Thorp, WI to appear at the Premiere Livestock Auction yard. Jill Welke had a chance to find out why this young man decided to pursue this field as his career. “This world championship might be connected to my name for the next year, but it’s not mine,” Edge said. “It’s ours. I’m going to be working for us for the next year to the very best of my ability to get out there and promote what we do.” As the reigning World Livestock Auctioneer Champion, he will spend the next year driving the custom-wrapped World Livestock Auctioneer Championship pickup all over the country to showcase his talents and promote the livestock industry. Edge can’t wait. Some storms and strong winds are on the way for the weekend. Stu Muck estimates rainfall amounts and temps for the weekend. Coming from a dairy farm in Watertown, Michelle Stangler has a deep skillset to offer as an Alice in Dairyland candidate. Stangler, a graduate from UW-River Falls, has spent a lot of time traveling the state gathering stories about Wisconsin agriculture. She's also ventured beyond the state to get perspective on what the state has versus other geographies. The Alice in Dairyland finale will be Saturday in Wausau. Greenhouse operators in Wisconsin faced some steep heating bills earlier this year. For Bergmann Greenhouse in Clayton, WI, starting those plants begins in January. This operation, located in Polk County, decided it was prudent to try and invest in equipment upgrades. Focus on Energy became their partner on smart renovations that brought them great rebates, and tremendous energy savings. Evan Croft, Energy Engineer and Technical Reviewer for Focus on Energy, worked with Jeanne and Invanna Bergmann. Bergmann's is a six-generation greenhouse operation that pays close attention to details. Jeanne explains the savings they've witnessed, and the ease they found in dealing with Focus on Energy. Another gorgeous day with a high of 75° and plenty of sunshine! Big weekend ahead with my 50th Birthday party tomorrow night, Big Bikes on Saturday, and on Sunday…my wife & I attend our first parade as Oktoberfest Grenadiers! Busy, busy, busy! We started the morning off with the OG "Thursday Song"….along with Pat McCurdy's brief cover of the original. We asked each other hypothetical questions for "Hypothetical Thursday". Brian's question for Jean was: "Everyone on earth takes a private vote by pressing a red or blue button. If more than 50% of people press the blue button, everyone survives. If less than 50% of people press the blue button, only people who pressed the red button survive. Which button would you press?" Jean's question for Brian was: "What is on your bucket list?" And Office Cora joined us just after 8am to let us know what she's up to in the 715 this weekend. In the news this morning, the latest on the Hantavirus cruise ship, another cruise ship in France is dealing with a stomach-flu outbreak, Alex Murdaugh is getting a new trial, a Wisconsin babysitter who left several children in a hot car while getting her nails done gets a plea deal, and the latest on the Watertown school board decision. In sports, the Brewers blew a stellar start by the Miz & lost to the Padres last night. And speaking of the Miz, he once again left the game with some cramping. We talked about last night's NBA & NHL Playoff action and looked at the upcoming schedules. The Royals & White Sox game last night got delayed when a fan fell into the bullpen. And speaking of schedules, the NFL dumped out a bunch of it's games yesterday…ahead of tonight's official schedule release. We discussed what's on TV today/tonight and also looked at Netflix's upfront presentation of it's new stuff. An ice cream truck in Massachusetts is going viral for being kind to children(that's all it takes?). In 1990, Monroe County's daytime television viewing habits were disrupted by a TV first: the live broadcast of The People v. Arthur J. Shawcross. Never before had home viewers anywhere been given access to gavel-to-gavel coverage of a sordid murder trial. The show lasted eleven weeks, September to December. Viewers that normally followed daytime dramas or game shows were instead focused on the trial of a serial-killer who'd confessed to killing ten women in Monroe County, and one more in Wayne County, but whose lawyers claimed he was insane and not responsible for his actions. Fans of courtroom dramas like Perry Mason, now saw the real thing, sometimes lazy in its pacing, but raw and unfiltered in its subjects and language. The show ran on cable station WGRC (Greater Rochester Cable) and was set in teak-paneled Courtroom 206 of the Monroe County Public Safety Building, which had been equipped and wired as a TV studio.A few watched the first day's broadcast, were repulsed and changed the channel. Most viewers however were fascinated and watched for the rest of the fall.The show's villain obviously was Shawcross, yet he put no work into his role. . Throughout, he sat at the defense table motionless and silent, staring at his shoes.The hero was Assistant District Attorney Charles Siragusa, who led the prosecution. By the trial's third week, Siragusa was receiving fan mail and baked cookies from “groupies.”Not every witness fared well under the lights. One defense witness, a forensic psychiatrist on the stand for many days, while trying to convince the jury of Shawcross's insanity, drew unwanted laughter and was eventually satirized by morning radio shows because of her rambling answers and disorganized demeanor.For several weeks, videotapes were shown in the courtroom (and on Channel 5) of the defendant supposedly under hypnosis, describing horrific acts that went well beyond what we'd ever heard discussed in our own homes: necrophilia, cannibalism, atrocities in Vietnam, cruel incestuous abuse. Shawcross claimed in falsetto that his mother took over his brain when he killed, much like Alfred Hitchcock's twisted villain Norman Bates in the movie Psycho.The prosecution's star witness was forensic psychiatrist Dr. Park Dietz. He, too, had extensively examined Shawcross, but not under hypnosis. He concluded that Shawcross was faking his mental illness, that he was not psychotic but rather a malingering psychopathic, not crazy just extraordinarily mean.“He is an anti-social. He lacks moral scruples and any sense of empathy,” Dr. Dietz testified.Viewers were horrified to learn that Shawcross as a young man had killed two children near Watertown, N.Y., ten-year-old Jack Owen Blake, murdered on May 7, 1972, and eight-year-old Karen Ann Hill, killed May 7, 1972.
